Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, by Andrew Morton

Everyone knows Tom Cruise—or at least what he wants us to know. We know that the man behind the smile overcame a tough childhood to star in astonishing array of blockbusters: Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, three Mission: Impossible movies, and more. We know he has taken artistic chances, too, earning him three Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. But beyond that, the picture becomes a bit less clear…

We know that Tom is a devoted follower of the Church of Scientology. We know that, despite persistent rumors about his sexuality, he has been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes. But it was not until he jumped on Oprah’s couch to proclaim his love for Katie and denounced Brooke Shields for turning to the “Nazi science” of psychiatry that we began to realize how much we did not know about the charming, hardworking star. For all the headlines and the rumors, the real Tom Cruise has remained surprisingly hidden—until now.

From Publishers Weekly
Morton's massively hyped, overly contentious and sometimes far-fetched account of Cruise's Scientology-driven life owes a lot to John Hinch's unwavering reading the material. Hinch offers a sincere, unbiased take on the material, but also manages to create a believable listening experience through his innate performance ability when assuming the roles of various characters, most notably, Cruise himself. Though there is little in the way of dialect changes and impersonation, listeners will be astounded at how close Hinch comes to capturing the Cruise persona. While the material is debatable and lacks anything profound or fresh, Hinch presents it in a way that keeps the audience thoroughly engaged throughout.

A cautionary Tale
By A Constant Reader
There is usually no true importance in a biography of a pop movie star except as light entertainment, but this book is a cautionary tale and that makes it, however ill- or well written, important. If the author, or any writer for that matter, were to write an expose of scientology (I do not capitalize what does not deserve a capital), who would read it? A handful of those who'd come close to these people? Perhaps even enough to save a few minds? But to write it in the guise of a "bio of Tom Cruise," well there you go...one hell of a lot of people will read it. And we all need to. Hubbard cynically put this horrible sci-fi plot together, called it a "religion," and proceeded to make a huge amount of money, more money than he would ever have made from his mediocre sci-fi potboilers. After a bit of legwork on his part, he caught a few desperate people in his net, and then a few more, and then eventually enough to make him rich...just as he boasted they would. This is documented stuff. So many other sci fi writers at the time were witness to dozens of drunken ramblings from Hubbard who said that the best way in the world to make money is to start a religion.

And he went out and did it. But it's not Hubbard who fascinates; it's those who can believe this sad and incredible muck. But they get taken in one step at a time, step after step, dollar by dollar, until one day they're in so deep and for long their mind seems to disappear and another takes its place. Think about it. We've all read bad sci fi, but whoever actually thinks it's the Ultimate Truth? Someone with a real identity problem coupled with a weak intellect, that's who. Like Cruise. You don't have to be smart to be an actor. Sometimes it helps to have virtually no personality of your own at all. Cruise, ensnared in Hubbard's money pot, has absorbed "Magnolia" as his persona, and is now entirely out of what was once his own mind.

The best book out there about scientology (aside from this one) is called Bare-faced Messiah by Russell Miller. It's a great read as well as a great ride as well as a chilling portrait of a chilling man.

One can only conclude that Cruise is an out-and-out neurotic to have so deeply bitten into this poison apple. It's possible that since celebrities are kept completely isolated from all the truly evil things scientology does, that Cruise and Travolta and whatshername? from Cheers have no idea what's going on in the rank and file. But they can't be isolated from the "teaching." And that makes them, to be kind, so far beyond credulous I can't think of a word for it.

As for no bad reviews, that one's a no-brainer. The troops have been ordered to shut up on amazon. Good idea. If they had piled on, as I'm sure so many would love to do, it would only call more attention to the book. And it would also prove to the rest of us how frightening they are because the "reviews" would have been truly fruity. I kind of regret they aren't here. What fabulous reading for a rainy afternoon.

Watching a Spiritual Trainwreck
By R. Elliott Ingersoll
For anyone who is fascinated with driven people, Tom Cruise's reputation would appear to put him close to the top of any list of such people. The author tells a compelling story although I'd have loved to have read more about the subject's work habits and acting study than speculation about his relationships.

The author can only write from an outsider perspective since this is, as noted, an unauthorized biography so we have to cut some slack. While the details of Cruise's personal life are not as interesting to me as the focus he puts into his work, it all pales in comparison to his involvement with Scientology which may be eclipsing his star.

Morton tells a story that is like watching a spiritual trainwreck. The author's speculation about the psychological needs Scientology may fill for the actor are held lightly enough but it is clear that Morton sees Scientology as an alarming presence and with it, Cruise as a potentially dangerous representative - more dangerous to himself than even perhaps the author believes. This part of his life makes up the majority of the second half of the book. Time will only tell if it eclipses Cruise's career the way the author presents it.

For those who have not themselves researched Scientology, the author may seem to be unfairly biased but over the years through study and meetings with Scientologists I've come away with conclusions. Genuine spirituality makes people more open, not paranoid; more compassionate, not divisive; and certainly more interested in seeking truth rather than relying on fixed doctrine.

I think Morton is giving a pretty accurate portrayal of the organization which makes its consuming presence in the life of one of America's great talents all the sadder. It is also tragic because many of Scientology's claims about psychotropic medications and the over-medicating of Americans are partially true but Scientologists' unwillingness to tolerate, let alone represent, the complexity of the situation leads most people to disregard their contributions.

While I wish the author and his subject well, I have a feeling the fireworks have just begun.

A good look at Scientology........
By BookReader
Contrary to what I was led to believe by the media frenzy and even by some reviewers, the book was well researched, well written and made no shocking accusations. In fact, Morton maintains that there is absolutely no evidence to indicate that Tom Cruise is gay, nor that Suri is not his biological daughter. Actually, after reading the book, I now have more respect for Tom Cruise's struggle to attain his present position in Hollywood, and for his obvious acting ability. That being said, I found his "religion" even more frightening than I had previously supposed. I have been reading about Scientology off and on for years, and thought they were both ridiculous and contrived, but not until the brouhaha erupted surrounding the publication of Andrew Morton's book did I think that Scientology might warrant a closer look. In my subsequent research I discovered that they are at best a mind controlling, money hungry cult, and at worst, dangerous to both mental and physical health, out to control the world. Fortunately, most people are both intelligent enough and well adjusted enough to avoid their pernicious advances. The basic tenets of Scientology make it quite clear why the marriage of Tom and Nicole ended as it did. She was not advancing in Scientology as either they or he thought she should, and was not completely taken in by it as he was. In fact, she was distancing herself from it. According to Scientology, if your spouse is not totally involved in Scientology, they are deemed a "Suppressive Person" (SP), and it is your obligation to "Disconnect" from them (usually by writing a brutally short, blunt letter, never severing the ties in person ). That is obviously pretty much what Tom did, although he used his lawyer to do the "dirty work." In addition, if members of your family don't go along with your Scientology beliefs, you might also be urged to "Disconnect" from them. Luckily for Tom, most of his family eventually entered the Cult with him. It is also rather obvious that the experience of the rich and famous in Scientology is quite different from that of the poor and unknown. Theses latter folks are the ones who suffer the most when under the control of this cult and they can possibly even end up being treated as slaves. If this book does nothing else, hopefully it will open more eyes to the dangers of Scientology, a group which is seldom attacked because of their litigousness. If you can't afford a lot of legal expenses or don't want them to ruin your life, leave them alone. Do the research.
