A search for the 4000-year-old tomb of an Egyptian pharaoh along the Nile's headwaters in Ethiopia is the focus of this intoxicating sequel to River God. A heady mix of exotic adventure, romance and Egyptology, it pairs blueblood, devil-may-care Sir Nicholas Quenton-Harper, who recently has lost his wife and children in a tragic accident, and half-English, half-Egyptian archeologist Royan Al-Sima, herself recently bereaved, in a desperate race to unearth Pharaoh Mamose's fabulous treasures. Their rival in this quest is Gotthold von Schiller, an old, crazed, murderous German collector of antiquities whose mistress, a porno actress, dresses up as an ancient Egyptian queen to titillate him. The major clue is the eponymous seventh scroll, key to the tomb's location, written by ancient Egyptian scribe Taita, who figured prominently in River God. As the novel opens, thugs hired by von Schiller steal the scroll, and thereafter the rival archeologist teams play a cat-and-mouse game with Taita across the millennia, avoiding lethal traps and deciphering red herrings, which will fool the reader too. The colorful cast includes alcoholic ex-KGB operative Boris Brusilov and ruthless Texan Jake Helm, von Schiller's slavish sidekick. Fans of intricate adventure and Egyptian lore will be captivated by Smith's capacious saga, which should serve to increase his audience in the States. This prolific and popular British writer-with 24 previous novels, he is a bestseller in England and elsewhere, to the tune of 65 million copies-is a master of the genre. 250,000 first printing; $250,000 ad/promo.

From Library Journal
Noted Egyptologist Royan Al Simma escapes an attempt on her life, but her husband, Duraid, is not so lucky. This husband-and-wife archaeological team was immersed in unraveling the secrets of the "seventh scroll." Written in a type of shorthand, the scroll dates back to the Hyksos invasion of Egypt and was recently discovered in the tomb of Queen Lostris, whose story is told in Smith's River God (St. Martin's, 1994). Grieving over the loss of her husband, Royan engages Sir Nicholas Quenton-Harper, a wealthy English collector, to assist her in completing the work she and Duraid had begun by locating the tomb of Pharaoh Mamose the Eighth, husband of Lostris. Through collective teamwork, Royan and Nicholas travel to Ethiopia, at great peril to themselves, as they try to uncover a 4000-year-old secret. This well-crafted novel is full of adventure, tension, and intrigue. Recommended for general readers.?Maria A. Perez-Stable, Western Michigan Univ. Libs., Kalamazoo

From Booklist
A consummate sequel, The Seventh Scroll perfectly complements River God , its phenomenally popular precursor. Smith has cleverly catapulted the story of Taita, the previous novel's wily narrator, 4,000 years into the future, that is, into the present. Mastermind Taita's brilliant feats of engineering and concealment succeeded in keeping the whereabouts of a pharaoh's tomb secret until a pair of archaeologists, Duraid and his young and beautiful wife, Royan, unearth a set of his clue-filled scrolls. As soon as they began translating the seventh scroll, they realize that they're onto something big. Soon their rivals catch the scent, and Duraid is the first to die in a treasure hunt that quickly escalates into a mercenaries' war. Plucky Royan enlists the help of a wealthy, dashing, and, yes, sensitive, British adventurer, Sir Nicholas Quenton-Harper, and soon they and their intrepid cohorts are reconnoitering in a treacherous Ethiopian river gorge. Their quest involves saints and torturers, guns and explosives, intuition and courage, constant danger and a rather sweet sexual restraint. Smith excels at action sequences, getting his attractive heroes and despicable villains into and out of hugely entertaining predicaments, all the while tossing off vivid descriptions, bits of historical detail, and classic low-key British banter. Enjoyable and Absorbing
By L. O. Rice
I enjoyed River God and couldn’t wait to read the Seventh Scroll. When I found that Taita’s story went on, I bought Warlock and enjoyed that, but somehow I never discovered the other books, The Quest, and Desert God. These are now on my ‘to read list’. These books are not short, but they are absorbing. As holiday reading, I’d say they were ideal. I always feel ancient Egypt tends to be ignored when we talk about civilisation, as thought every worthwhile idea came from the Greeks and every worthwhile structure came from the Romans. Egypt provided the seeds for both.

If you enjoy this, you may enjoy other books about ancient Egypt such as Ramses: The Son of Light - Volume I

Great sequel...4000 years later!
By Benjamin Thomas
"The Seventh Scroll", by Wilbur Smith is the follow-up to "River God", one of the best historical novels I have read in a very long time. "The Seventh Scroll" was meant to be read after "River God" but it is not exactly a sequel. It actually takes place in the present day with a couple of archeologist types who are out to discover the hidden tombs that were depicted in the first book. What an intriguing concept! What we got to live through before is now seen through the eyes of history, including all the distortions of history that are bound to happen. Afterall, what we assume to be true through archeological research isn't necessarily the way it really happened.

The author does another intriguing thing in this book. He inserts himself into his own fiction, having a main character refer to Wilbur Smith as having authored the fictional "River God" from information uncovered in the first 6 scrolls found in the tomb. Of course it is the 7th scroll that the characters are after in this second book. This leads to some funny moments as the two main protagonists argue about just how accurate Wilbur Smith was in the first book; one of them goes so far as to dismiss Mr Smith as a hack writer who changes the historical record in order to include more sex and violence. It's a twisted loop whereby an author actually negatively critques his own work...I guess you have to be pretty secure in your own writing career to do that. Regardless, it works wonderfully here.

The book itself was only slightly less enjoyable than the first. When you get right down to it, this is a pretty straight forward adventure/treasure hunting story along the likes of "Romancing the Stone". But Wilbur Smith is an outstanding writer who has a knack for making you read just a little more and then still more despite any deadlines you may have to deal with. You know the two main characters will hook up by the end but its not predictable how that happens. The dangerous scenes in the book are really dangerous and the suspense is spot on. As for historical accuracy...everything sure seemed to be accurate based on my limited knowledge of ancient Egypt and my trip to that country a few years ago. I hadn't planned on reading this series this year but now I am already looking forward to the third book, "Warlock", where we get to return to the ancient times and see what happens next!

Harrah for Wilbur Smith and his tales of Egypt.
By David Loupe
I am a lover of anything written about ancient Egypt and have read all of Mr. Smiths books on the subject. Having traveled extensively in that country, reading his books takes me there in print and saves me the long air flight to return to that fabled land. His books give us some realistic insight into a great aged civilization. I await his next book coming in October.

Don't waste your money, buy Bitter Blood instead
By Lysa Burleson
I read Bledsoe's Bitter Blood a few years ago. It was a fantastic book. The story intriged me so much that when I saw Deadly Kin, I purchased it. What a waste of money.
The brother of Susie Lynch tells "his" perception of what happened. It wasn't very realistic. He tried to remove nearly all the blame from Susie Lynch and put it all on Fritz Klenner. Now, don't get me wrong, Klenner was responsible for the murders, however, Susie was not just an "innocent, who was confused" as Newsome would like us all to believe.
Trotter' chapters in the book aren't much better. The writing is poor, the flow of the book is poor, and the entire purpose of putting out this book utterly ridiculous.
The book does not delve deep enough to shed any new light on this crime. You could have learned more just by reading the newspaper accounts.
It's this writer's opinion that that Robert Newsome wanted to grab some of the limelight for himself, and make a little extra cash on the side, while exploiting his "fame" by being related to both victim and killer. He would have been better off writing a book about himself, his drug addition, his own family matters, etc. It would have been more interesting.

By Patricia S.
I first saw the movie on the lifetime movie channel, then I ordered this book. Unbelievably tragic story. I understand a brother wanting to portray his sister in a better light, and I truly sympathize with this author, but this woman was incredibly self centered. I would call it one of the saddest cases in history.

In "Hot Toy," Crusie's wickedly witty and entertaining romance, Trudy Maxwell sets out on Christmas Eve to find the season's most-wanted toy, only to become tangled up with lies, spies, and the infuriatingly sexy Nolan Mitchell. Foster puts plenty of sensual heat into "Christmas Bonus," her story of two people who indulge in a holiday office romance only to find it turning into something more serious. And Carly Phillips tells a steamy tale, "Naughty under the Mistletoe," in which Toni kisses her boss' twin brother by mistake. John Charles

Christmas porn
By Angela Markwalter
It really pains me to say this; but, Santa Baby is short on story line and character development. Jennifer Crusie's novella, "Hot Toy" saved this volume from a one star rating; however, even this piece was not quite up to Crusie's usual rollicking good fun standards. If it were stand alone piece, I would probably have given the novella 3 stars.

Lori Foster and Carly Phillips really disappointed me though and dragged the book down irretrievably. Foster's "Christmas Bonus" lacked everything but sex, of which it had way too much. And Phillips' "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" was so unbelievable that even the sex fell flat.

All in all, I was thoroughly disappointed and saddened that Crusie's name is linked to this book. All three authors are much better writers than what was delivered by this book. Save your money and read some of their other works such as, Faking It by Jennifer Crusie.

Just OK
By Cherise Everhard
I really wanted to love this book, but the truth is, it's just OK.

Jennifer Crusie writes an action/spy novella In Hot Toy. Trudy is sent out on Christmas Eve to purchase the latest Hot Toy for her nephew. Of course the toy isn't in stock as everyone wants one. While going through other shelves hoping for a misplaced toy, she runs into a guy she dated 3 times. She thought he was the one. He never called back. The two get mixed up in spy game when they toy she finds contain secret Chinese codes. I thought her's was the best as it was entertaining and the couple's relationship was beleivable. Plus there are quite a few laughs thrown in. If it was just Jennifer Crusie's story I had to rate I would probably give it a 4.

In Lori Fosters Christmas Bonus you have Maggie who has recently taken over her fathers company upon his death. Eric is the employee everyone thought would take over the company. Eric and Maggie both have loved eachother secretly since they met. Eric stumbles upon some evidence of Maggies feelings and decides to act on it. I thought the plot was good, but the story just didn't live up to all it could have been.

In Carly Phillips Naughty Under the Mistletoe you have Toni, a woman who decides she is going to make the moves on her soon to be ex-boss at the Christmas Party. She ends up kissing his twin instead. I am a Carly Phillips fan and this story just fell flat. The couple fall in love after a one night stand. I just couldn't buy it.

These are 3 quick easy reads. Each has entertaining value, but it might be a book you want to check out at the library or borrow from a friend instead of buy.

Enjoyable seasonal anthology....
By Deborah Wiley
SANTA, BABY contains one phenomenal new novella by Jennifer Crusie and two reprints from Lori Foster and Carly Phillips. See what happens when Christmas means romance is in the air....

A Major MacGuffin is the "Hot Toy" this Christmas in Jennifer Crusie's phenomenal new novella. Trudy Maxwell is determined to find a Major MacGuffin for her nephew, Leroy, this Christmas Eve after her dad forgets to buy him one. After all, Evil Nemesis Brandon has one, toxic waste packets and all. Trudy is determined that Leroy won't suffer the same heartbreak she and her sister suffered every year when Santa's gifts "fell off the sleigh". Unfortunately, Trudy soon finds herself embroiled in the midst of international espionage and she'll have to decide whether to trust Nolan Mitchell who stole her heart and dumped her several months earlier.

Jennifer Crusie is the master at writing a humorous romance! "Hot Toy" will have the reader laughing out loud nonstop as the antics of the characters are hysterical. The interplay between Trudy and Nolan is funny, but Trudy's conversations with her sister, Courtney, steal the show. The visual images described by Ms. Crusie are so uproariously vivid that one can easily see the carnage of the gingerbread men and the gumdrops sliding off of the roof of the gingerbread house! This reviewer can't remember when she has laughed so hard. Thank you, Ms. Crusie, for a story that puts humor into the entire "Hot Toy" chaos.

Lori Foster's "Christmas Bonus" is about an office romance. Maggie Carmichael inherited her father's business when all she really wanted was her father's right hand man, Eric Bragg. Unfortunately, Eric has been distant ever since Maggie became his boss. Will love blossom as a "Christmas Bonus" this year for Maggie and Eric?

Lori Foster excels at writing a steamy romance. "Christmas Bonus" is definitely a "feel-good" sort of story that is perfect for the holidays. The sexual attraction between Maggie and Eric is never in doubt. Most of the development of their relationship was believable but this reviewer was a bit irritated by comments made by Eric later in the book as it tainted the entire romance. If one eliminates those statements by Eric, then "Christmas Bonus" is an enjoyable holiday tale.

Carly Phillips puts a new twist on an old theme in "Naughty Under the Mistletoe". Toni Larson intends to seduce Stephan Corbin but finds herself with his twin, Maxwell. Will their one night of being "Naughty Under the Mistletoe" bloom into so much more or will their own insecurities get in the way?

Carly Phillips manages to pack a lot of emotional depth into such a short story. Both Toni and Maxwell have their own set of insecurities but each opens up to the other over an unusual game of pool. The blossoming of their romance after such a short period of time is surprisingly believable.

SANTA, BABY stands out as a superb anthology based on the strength of the Jennifer Crusie novella. For "Hot Toy" alone, this reviewer strongly recommends this anthology as I laughed until I cried over this story. Lori Foster and Carly Phillips offer two decent seasonal stories but fans of both should be cautioned that these are both reprints. SANTA, BABY proves to be an enjoyable seasonal anthology that should please fans of Ms. Crusie in particular.

Banks's sizzling eighth Vampire Huntress Legend (after The Forsaken) explodes with the wrath of Cain, who burns with obsessive passion for the Neteru vampire huntress, Damali, and hatred for her new husband, Carlos Rivera. Completely turned to the dark side, Cain takes his father's throne in Hell, recalls the evil master vampire, Fallon Nuit, from the Sea of Perpetual Agony and pursues the amorous newlyweds. Cain's mother, Eve, is so devastated by her son's evil transformation that all humanity's fecundity is adversely affected. Nuit starts assembling a thoroughly nasty new army and messes with Damali and Carlos while the ancient Council of Neteru Kings and Queens readies for war and Armageddon. In her inimitable combination of street and baroque language, Banks offers more dramatic sex, action-packed good vs. evil adventure and multicultural mythology to reinforce ethical lessons. (Feb.)

Excellent!!!!!!!

Just when I thought L.A. Bank's books couldn't get any better, she does it again and even better than before. This book was awesome! It was full of action, suspense, intrigue, you name it. I could not put this book down. I can barely wait until the next book comes out. I hope this series never ends, that's just how good it is. Even though there were alot more characters added, you still felt like you knew all of them. L.A. Banks puts so much into each character she introduces. She is just an awesome writer. I cannot wait until July!

From Publishers Weekly
Historical romance master Kleypas reintroduces Cam Rohan, the wealthy half-Gypsy first seen in 2006's Devil in Winter, in her latest page-turning Victorian. Rohan, manager of a London gentleman's club, decides to do a favor for the distraught Amelia Hathaway, who is scouring brothels in search of her wastrel brother, Leo. Rohan, weary of his usual diet of beautiful-but-boring lovers, is bemused by and attracted to Amelia, a staid and proper spinster, and so he sets about making a presence of himself at the ramshackle Hathaway estate, sowing sexual tension as he does. As the standoffish relationship between Rohan and Amelia evolves into romance, the reappearance of Amelia's former suitor throws an intriguing wrench in the works. The author's sensitivity to the prejudice endured by the Roma (Gypsies) adds a measure of grim reality that is creatively offset by Rohan's discussion of Roma beliefs and superstitions. Kleypas's effortless style makes for another sexy exploration of 19th-century passion and peccadilloes, riveting from start to finish. (Oct.)

Beginning to a new series
By Misuzmama
Living on the fringes of society has never much bothered half-Gypsy half-Irish Cam Rohan. Until now. An unsettling feeling has slowly begun to take root over the past few years. He no longer enjoys things that once brought him pleasure. Instead he's bombarded with uncivilized urges, is easily provoked and short-tempered. The walls are closing in all around him. There's a fierce need in him to go back to his roots. To live in the open uninhibited ways of the Romany. To be free.

Amelia Hathaway bursts into his life making no apologies. She's a shabby gentlewoman whose the glue that holds together her quirky/misfit family. Someone who time and again takes up the reins and shoulders all the responsibility. A woman in need of rescue herself. One too afraid to rely on anyone.

Their paths cross constantly. Is it fate or balderdash? Whose to say what the future holds? Who needs to be rescued or shackled or set free? Or maybe a little of all the above?

I've been anxiously waiting for this book and I'm happy to say that I'm not disappointed. Cam is everything that I wanted him to be; a slightly roguish hero with a heart of gold. Amelia is the near historical equivalent of a super mom (with a brother and sisters instead of kids). She (practically) singlehandedly manages everyone and everything. An exhausting prospect. Both are restless and searching for peace that continues to elude them. That is, until they find each other.

Kleypas rounds out the book with a cast of delightful secondary characters. There's the old ones who make an appearance (Marcus, Lillian, Sebastian and Evie) and new ones that captured my attention and nearly stole the show. Amelia's sister Win and her relationship with Merripen (the Romany who has lived with them since he was twelve) is particularly intriguing. I can't wait for that sequel. As well as Amelia's depressed, dissolute brother whose reasons for being such tugged at this reader's heartstrings.

It almost goes without saying that Kleypas is superb romance author. You'll find well drawn characters, sizzling sexual tension and engrossing plots in almost all of her books. This one is no exception.

A good romance from a great writer. Won't replace Devil in Winter or Then Came You as my tops but a fine Kleypas to add to my collection.

a perfect gem
By M. DETWILER
This is the reason I read romance novels. For every hum-drum, unimaginative book I have read, one like Mine Till Midnight comes along and just perks up my week. I have waited for Cam Rohan's story for months. He captured my attention in the book about St. Vincent and Evie. I couldn't wait to read his story, but part of me was dreading it because I was afraid it wouldn't live up to my expectations. Never fear, Lisa K. has outdone herself with his story. I enjoyed her wallflower books, but I didn't feel they were quite up to her usual standards, that being her older books. This book harkens back to Kleypas at her best. This is right up there with her classics.
Cam, with his dual heritage of Rom and Irish, is a hero with many layers. He has a worthy partner in Amelia Hathaway. She has a family who has a lot of quirks, to say the least. The way these two come together is just a delight to read. Cam wants to return to his Gypsy roots, but is pulled toward society by his longing for Amelia. I saw the makings of several more books in this one. I can't wait to read more of Merripen's story. He will end up with Win, but how is he connected to Cam? I believe there is redemption ahead for Amelia's brother. This wonderful historical is the reason Lisa Kleypas should stick to what she does best and leave the contemporaries to others.
I have said before that no one writes a hero like Lisa K. Her men are some of the best in romance, unforgettable and delicious. Cam Rohan is one magnificent hero--this book was an absolute joy to read.

The First Lady was smiling for the cameras.

But the Shirley Temple look-alike contest was the furthest thing from Eleanor's mind...

Her duties range from the ridiculous to the sublime. But her keen mind is honed in on one matter. After a state visit from the King and Queen of England, the body of a young woman, a seemingly innocent White House employee, is discovered on the third floor of the Executive Mansion. Quickly realizing that the girl has been killed somewhere else-and that she was far from innocent-Eleanor dons the disguise of Washington, D.C. Homicide Detective "Broderick" and enters a world of speakeasies, mobsters, and the tangled sexual liaisons of restless young men and women. With the dark spectre of war in Europe looming, and such luminaries as Babe Ruth and Ernest Hemingway making pilgrimages to FDR, Eleanor is running out of time-to stop a killer who can do more harm than murder.

From Publishers Weekly
The posthumously published 15th in Roosevelt's series starring his mother Eleanor as sleuth finds the White House in an uproar before a visit from King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. At the 11th hour, Lucinda Robinson, Eleanor's social secretary, goes missing. Only after the royal couple leaves is her body discovered, stuffed in a third-floor closet. Eleanor enlists her old investigative pals, D.C. police captain Ed Kennelly and Secret Service agent Gerald Baines, to pursue the killer. They discover that Lucinda was a complex woman, fluent in German, ambitious, playful and sexually active. As they search, Eleanor goes undercover, masquerading as Detective Broderick when she visits a "carpet joint" (a nightclub with gambling) and sees a striptease act. Soon the First Lady suspects a connection between FDR's preoccupation with the German threat and Lucinda's fascination with that country. The author's fans will relish this glimpse into White House life of the time and the parade of famous names.

Spies and Murder in the White House
By George Webster, Ph.D.,
This is another in the series of Elliott Roosevelt's mysteries starring First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. It is June, 1939. World War Two is only weeks away. During the pomp and ceremony of a visit by the King and Queen of England, a young assistant to Eleanor Roosevelt is found murdered. Investigation reveals that she is not the innocent girl that everyone assumed her to be. She was also seen at the German Embassy, and further tracking leads to the realization that murderous German spies have penetrated the White House. For fans of the series, this is a vintage Elliott Roosevelt mystery, with much fascinating insight into the 1939 White House by someone who was there. There is nothing here for the blood and gore violence fan - just a relaxing mystery peopled by Franklin Roosevelt, J. Edgar Hoover, Ernest Hemingway, and other notable figures of the time.

This book might have been the product of Elliot Roosevelt when he was seven years old. It was very non-descriptive! One did not even know where the action was taking place in many scenes. Maybe I am too critical, but I thought that the scene where Mrs. Roosevelt ventures into a strip club and makes comments amd asks questions like, "Oh, so is that what they call a G string?" was appealing to some sore ot lowly base instincts

Chapter One
Chris Law looked out the window of his home onto Elm Street, a quiet neighborhood in the small run-down town of Skidmore in the northwest corner of Missouri. Most of the houses on that dead end street cried out for a fresh coat of paint or the immediate attention of a carpenter or roofer. They huddled together tired and neglected--sagging beneath the weight of a cold December day. The bare branches of the trees and the winter weariness of the lawns added to the bleakness of the block.

Chris peered catty-corner across the street to the little white bungalow with flaking paint that Zeb and Bobbie Jo Stinnett called home. They were a cute couple--friendly but quiet. Bobbie Jo, though, had a sparkle in her eye that revealed an ornery sense of humor beneath her gentle, still demeanor.

The young couple in their early twenties were newlyweds--their marriage less than two years old. They were already expecting their first child--the due date was January 19. The coming of the baby created a growing excitement for their tomorrows. They saved every penny they could to build a nest egg and make it possible to own their own home. They envisioned a life for their baby that exceeded the expectations they had for their own.

Now just nine days before Christmas, Bobbie Jo had reached that awkward, waddling stage. She rolled up the sidewalk more than she walked. She had to hold on to a secure object when she bent down to pick something up off the floor.

Chris had planned to walk over and pay a visit to Bobbie Jo that afternoon. He wanted to ask her about her recent pre-natal test results. In a town this small, everyone focused on each expectant mother. With the population shrinking, any birth was big news.

He hesitated when he spotted a dirty, pinkish-red two-door import parked the wrong way in front of her house. He thought he ought not to bother Bobbie Jo, since she had company. He popped his head up to the window a couple of times to see if the coast was clear so he could slip over without interrupting her social visit.

It seemed to him as if the car was there for hours. But he could have been wrong. Waiting for a change of events over which he had no control did make time crawl slower than the sand in a clogged hourglass.

Sometime well before 3:30, he decided he would catch up with Bobbie Jo later. He jumped in his car to drive the fourteen miles up State Road V to Maryville to run a few errands. His town had no grocery store, pharmacy, fast food restaurants or even a Wal-Mart.

As he hit the end of Elm Street, he had second thoughts--maybe he should stop in and check on Bobbie Jo anyway. What if something was wrong? He pulled out on the main road and circled around a block as he toyed with the idea. Ultimately, he decided not to yield to his sudden flash of paranoia. He’d be a good neighbor and not disrupt her visit with her guests. He headed on up the road.

Once Chris left home, no one was watching 410 Elm Street. Bobbie Jo was alone with her mystery visitor. The rat terriers she bred out of her huge love of animals and passion for the breed--and for a small profit--were put up in their room. No neighbor looked as the front door jerked all the way open. Not a soul saw the dirty-blond woman with the frenzied eyes and furtive moves walk across the front porch. No one took note of the blanketed bundle cradled in her arms. No one watched as she scurried to her car, pulling the bundle closer to her chest as if sheltering it from the wind and the cold. No one heard the unmistakable cry of a newborn infant. No eyes followed the dirty red car with Kansas plates as it made a rough U-turn at the dead end of Elm Street and drove off to parts unknown.

A short while later, Becky Harper turned onto Elm Street. She passed the big yellow house with its toy-laden porch and splotchy lawn. She drove beyond a sad, sagging home with a weedy front yard. She turned around at the dead end and pulled in front of her daughter Bobbie Jo’s home. It was 3:30 in the afternoon.

The front door to the tiny bungalow was ajar. A tingle of concern sent ripples across her scalp. Folks in Northwest Missouri simply did not leave their doors open to the cold of December. Even nice sunny days bore too much chill in the air.

Becky pushed the door all the way open, hollering, “Bobbie Jo! Bobbie Jo!”

There was no response. A tight band of apprehension tugged in her chest. Bobbie Jo was eight months pregnant. Had she gone into early labor? Was she sick--too sick to respond? Becky hesitated with each step she took into the house.

Stepping inside the home, she saw nothing to cause alarm. Everything was neat and orderly in the living room. She moved to the dining room and the kitchen. Everything was in its place. Even this late in her pregnancy, Bobbie Jo maintained the tidy appearance of her modest home. Becky called out to her daughter again and was greeted by frustrated barks from Bobbie Jo’s dogs. Becky moved past the kitchen and toward the animals confined in the small bedroom Bobbie Jo transformed into a room for her dogs. Barks and whimpers emerged from the metal kennel cages lining the room. Against one wall, an old dresser served as a grooming station for her rat terriers.

As she reached the doorway, a vision out of a slaughterhouse exploded before Becky’s eyes. Blood. Pools of blood. Garish red smears streaked and swirled on the oak floor boards. Huge, dark clots of blood scattered on the surface like trampled roses in mud.

Becky saw the body on the floor, but in her heart she wanted to believe all this carnage was from one of the dogs. Whatever horrible thing happened to any one of them would break Bobbie Jo’s heart. She could deny the reality before her dazed eyes for brief seconds only. There at her feet lay her only daughter--the mother of her soon-to-be first grandchild--and she was covered in blood. The young woman who, twenty-three short years ago, was only a small warm burden inside of Becky’s body now lay still on the floor.

Splotches of blood covered Bobbie Jo’s face. Streaks of ruby red ran up and down her arms. Her belly, distended from pregnancy, splayed open to reveal protruding internal organs scorched with a screaming crimson. Even the small soles of Bobbie Jo’s feet glistened with blood.

Becky’s eyes saw the truth of the horror. Her mind ran from it. Her eyes had to be lying. She tried to deny the truth of her senses and failed. Still, the scene made no sense to her. She struggled to frame it into a coherent possibility. “My daughter’s intestines exploded,“ she said when she called 9-1-1.

As soon as the words passed her lips, she was no longer certain of their reliability. Her world tilted and wobbled on an unreliable axis. She was undone.

The operator asked, “Is she still breathing?”

“I don’t know,“ Becky wailed. She kneeled in the blood beside her oldest child’s side struggling to numb the paralyzing emotions that siezed her own limbs. She followed instructions as the operator talked her step-by-step through the administration of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

She tilted back Bobbie Jo’s head and pinched her nose. She covered her daughter’s mouth with her own and delivered the sharpest breath she could. She rose up and placed her hands on Bobbie Jo’s chest and pushed down. One time. Two times. Thirty times.

In less than twenty seconds she was back on her daughter’s mouth with two more breaths. Then back to the chest compressions again. Over and over. Breathing and pushing. Counting the compressions aloud to block the noise of her own dreadful thoughts and keep her focus.

She choked. She sobbed. But she did not stop.

Four-term Nodaway County Sheriff Ben Espey was in the dispatch center in Maryville when Becky’s frantic call shattered the peace of a quiet afternoon. He jumped in his truck and floored the pedal--making the half-hour drive in fourteen minutes. He was the first responder on the scene.

Becky turned to him with crazed yet determined eyes and pleaded, “I need help with this.” CPR was so simple but so exhausting.

Espey got down on the floor to assist. He smelled the slight musky undertone of dog present even in this clean, well-kept kennel. Blaring above that scent was the iron-rich scream of freshly-shed blood. He saw no signs of life in the body of the young woman on the floor, but did not whisper his fears to the mother. He just worked with Becky as a team while distressed dogs whimpered their mournful fears.

On the east end of Elm Street, Carla Wetzel heard the howl of the sirens. She could not see where the vehicles stopped. But it was just past the time school let out and she worried that a school bus had wrecked.

Across the street from the Stinnett home, Tracy Grossoehme played in the yard with her two small children, enjoying the relative balminess of that winter afternoon. They stopped what they were doing as the ambulance pulled into their street, staring open-mouthed.

As it parked in front of their neighbor’s home, Tracy’s oldest child asked, “Can we say a prayer for the hurt person?”

“Yes, we can,“ Tracy said.

Three heads bowed in a moment of silence, marking the first public prayer sent to the heavens for Bobbie Jo and her baby. It certainly would not be the last.

Five minutes after Espey’s arrival, the paramedics flew out of the ambulance and into the house, where they relieved Becky and the sheriff of their hopeless duty. The emergency medical pair checked for vital signs and found no indication of life. Just the same, they attempted to revive Bobbie Jo, continuing the performance of CPR her mother started, but they, too, failed to get a response. It was far to...

Page turner

Another great book by Ann Rule. This a horribly sad story and I was to the point of tears so many times while reading this book.

200 pages too long
By Donna J. Runnels
Of the 246 pages in this book, less than half had anything to do with the title story. Since the suspect in this case was apprehended with the baby within about 24 hours of the crime, there really was no story to write about. The author instead filled in with other crime stories not connected to this case. Those other stories were actually more interesting than the main story. This book was also proofread poorly - there were a number of typos, even phrases that were missing words. This was obviously written in a hurry to sell books. This was one of the poorest true crime books I've ever read.

Poorly written offering of a tragic crime
By Judi Fryer
Diane Fanning, in my opinion, should either return to penning novels or enter the news or magazine writing arena.

Most of her books appear to be written too soon and be woefully lacking in detail. I see people writing about her 'research' for this particular book; but I don't see the results in the book itself, at least with regard to this specific case.

The book includes more research on this 'type' of crime; which appears to be prevalent, but the seemingly endless detours into other cases, coupled with the lack of information about this specific tragedy, are very distracting to the reader trying to glean information about the crime committed by Lisa Montgomery against Bobbie Jo Stinnett and her family.

'Baby Be Mine' is an example of another incident becoming much too prevalent; rush-to-the-press, poorly-written, underdeveloped true-crime books that do not do justice to the victim's lives or to the genre.

Thankfully the outcome of the crime was completely just, even if this book was not. Montgomery was found guilty and given the death sentence by the jury. At least there will be legal justice for Bobbie Jo's memory and family. A better-written book would have included the trial and its outcome.

I would not recommend the purchase of this book as it leaves the reader entirely unsatisfied and feeling as though the entire exercise of the writing and reading was a waste of time. Bobbie Jo's story is not justly told in 'Baby Be Mine'.
