G is for Gumshoe (The Kinsey Millhone Alphabet Mysteries), by Sue Grafton

For #1 New York Times bestselling author Sue Grafton's PI Kinsey Millhone, danger comes with the job―but she never expects to find herself at the top of a hit man's list…

G IS FOR GAME…

When Irene Gersh asks PI Kinsey Millhone to locate her elderly mother Agnes, whom she hasn't heard from in six months, it's not exactly the kind of case Kinsey jumps for. But a girl's gotta pay her bills, and this should be easy money―or so she thinks. Kinsey finds Agnes in a hospital. Aside from her occasional memory lapses, the octogenarian seems fine. And frightened.

G IS FOR GUN…

Kinsey doesn't know what to make of Agnes's vague fears and bizarre ramblings, but she's got her own worries. It seems Tyrone Patty, a criminal she helped put behind bars, is looking to make a hit. First, Kinsey's car is run off the road, and then days later, she's almost gunned down, setting in motion a harrowing cat and mouse game…

G IS FOR GUMSHOE

So Kinsey decides to hire a bodyguard. With PI Robert Dietz watching her 24/7, Kinsey is feeling on edge…especially with their growing sexual tension. Then, Agnes dies of an apparent homicide, Kinsey realizes the old lady wasn't so senile after all―and maybe she was trying to tell her something? Now Kinsey's determined to learn the truth…even if it kills her.

From Publishers Weekly
California PI Kinsey Millhone, hired to investigate the disappearance of a client's eccentric, elderly mother, must also evade a vengeful criminal whom she helped put away four years earlier. "Grafton creates . . . a twist in the complex plot to tease Bronte fans, and a new, vulnerable side to the still-sardonic Kinsey," said PW. "The only complaint is that it ends abruptly." Author tour.

From School Library Journal
Feisty private investigator Kinsey Millhone continues to solve mysteries, in this case finding and taking an elderly woman to a nursing home near her daughter. But the lady mysteriously disappears within hours of her arrival. Painfully aware of the fact that a contract has been arranged for her own murder, Kinsey unravels the events of the past clue by clue, narrating the action-filled story in a realistic, easy-to-read, informal style. Less motivated students are sure to appreciate a character with a respectable, exciting job without having had a college education; although Kinsey had police training, her bodyguard freely admits he left high school but later took an equivalency test. This light mystery maintains interest to the end; everything happens quickly. --Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

Health food hit man
By D. P. Birkett
This one has two main plots. One is a classical mystery with clues based on the Bronte sisters, about a woman's missing mother. The other is about a contract on Milhone's life taken by a jailed killer who hires a hit man. Actually, as always in Grafton, there are multiple plots: The hit man is trying to get custody of his son to prevent his mother raising him the wrong way and feeding him junk food;a woman goes into labor on the marriage registry office; Vera gets engaged after being caught in flagrate delicto etc, etc. A major strand is Milhone's affair with Dietz, her self-appointed bodyguard.
Hardcore Graftonologists will note that the telephone contact with Dietz in A is for Alibi is said to have taken place a year previously (hardcover publication date for that was 1982, this has a 1990 first publication date). Milhone has her thirty-third birthday is this one, and we are told that Irene is 47 and was born in 1940.

The Chairman has been slaughtered, along with Hell's first almost-successful attempt at creating an Anti-Christ, using Carlos Rivera's body-double. Dante's son has also been vanquished. Now the evil Lilith sits on Dante's old throne, a prize won in her negotiations with Cain. She is The Vampire Council's new Chairwoman―and Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

All Lilith needs is Damali's newly discovered angelic powers to allow her evil progeny to walk through the veil between worlds and usher in the true Anti-Christ. Damali and her crew enter a desperate race against time to stop Lilith―even if doing so brings the Neteru Councils out of the clouds and into the Biblical Holy Lands…and kicks off the Armageddon.

From Publishers Weekly
In Banks's sexy ninth Vampire Huntress novel (after The Wicked), the first seal has been broken and Armageddon has begun. Lilith and her husband, the Unnamed One, are caught unawares while awaiting the birth of their angel-hybrid heir. Installed as Vampire Council chairwoman, Lilith calls on vampires, witches and warlocks (including Machiavelli, Jezebel, Genghis Khan and Medusa) to combat the forces of the Covenant, the Guardians, the Neterus and both Neteru Councils. She attacks her enemies Damali and Carlos Rivera where it hurts the most: their libidos. Soon the battle involves a Valkyrie, the Ark of the Covenant and bootleg music downloads. This end of days scenario is a wild amalgam of Christianity, vampire lore, world myth, functional morality, street philosophy and hot sex. Three double-page line drawings by Eric Battle perfectly illustrate Banks's over-the-top supernatural characters and scenes. As long as neither the world nor the series is ending, fans couldn't ask for more. (July)

Ask Me How I Know?
By Mama Toph
This is the 9TH book in the Vampire Huntress Legends series and Damali Richards Rivera has become even stronger as a Neteru. Her love for her husband and her team has made her one of the most dangerous women on the planet, but still she can't get that husband of hers to understand her position as a Neteru and a leader. Carlos refuses to see her as she was when they first bonded. Now that she is "The Mrs" he seems to feel she should take the safe and sure way to do things. What Damali and all the female Guardians know, is in this fight against the ultimate evil, there is no safe and sure way to do anything. Lilith has now gained her husband's favor and been elevated to a position that had only been held by males. The secret of the heir apparent was a life saving bargaining chip for her, but it hasn't dampened her taste for revenge against the Neteru's and the Neteru council. A pre Armageddon fight of epic proportions is started by Carlos and the male Guardians with a driveby attack on Hell itself. Not only does this jump start the Armageddon countdown, but it opens the door for some serious retaliation in one of the most insiduous forms imaginable for a married couple. Without spilling the beans, so to speak, I can only say that this book will keep you reading almost until the very last page. The Team has now moved into a new level of the fight, but in the words of both Damali and Carlos, "Ask me how I know?" Well, get the book and see for yourself.

The Really Cursed
By Kindle Customer
The book starts off with action in a true den of sin, guns blazing, vamps dying and props to the men. They feel their testosteren flowing, but it isn't the regular type of machismo, this is the "holy" kick-butt type of machismo. The women of this piece are shocked and amazed that the men would go into the heart of Lilith's home, kill her pet and get out. "Lou" (short for Lucifer) is shocked by their boldness. There is a mole in hell, Eve and her group do damage and the Antichrist is born in a place I never would have guessed. Read and enjoy.

Yuck!
By Maureen Kirkbride
Up to now I've really enjoyed this series. With this last one it seems as if she's forcing the story. I believe the series is over. It's always been difficult for me to get passed the dialect used. With this one it was harder than ever. To the point of detracting from the story. The plot seemed like it was the same as the last, just re-worked. I'm sorry to say I won't be buying or reading any more in this particular series.

ANCIENT MYSTERIES / NEW AGE

“An excellent book that is not only beautifully researched but also extremely entertaining to read. The Flem-Aths’ theory on Atlantis will go down in the annals of this subject as one of the most convincing and imaginative. Well done for the first-class tour de force.”
--Robert Bauval, author of Black Genesis and The Orion Mystery

In this completely revised and expanded edition of When the Sky Fell, Rand and Rose Flem-Ath show that 12,000 years ago vast areas of Antarctica were free from ice and home to the kingdom of Atlantis, a proposition that also elegantly solves the mysteries of ice ages and mass extinctions, the simultaneous worldwide rise of agriculture, and the source of devastating prehistoric climate change. Expanding upon Charles Hapgood’s theory of earth crust displacement, which was championed by Albert Einstein, they examine ancient yet highly accurate world maps, including the Piri Reis map of 1513, and show how the earth’s crust shifted in 9600 BCE, dragging Atlantis into the polar zone where it now lies beneath miles of Antarctic ice. From the Cherokee, Haida, and Okanagan of North America to the earliest records of Egypt, Iran, Mexico, and Japan, they reveal that ancient myths of floods, lost island paradises, and visits from advanced godlike peoples from all corners of the globe all point to the same worldwide catastrophe that resulted in Atlantis’s demise. The authors explain how the remaining Atlanteans, amid massive earthquakes and epic floods, evacuated and spread throughout the world, resulting in the birth of the first known civilizations.

Including rare material from the archives of Charles Hapgood, Albert Einstein, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Flem-Aths explain how an earth crust displacement could happen again in the future, perhaps in correspondence with high solar activity. With new scientific, genetic, and linguistic evidence in support of Antarctica as the location of long-lost Atlantis, this updated edition convincingly shows that Atlantis was not swallowed by the sea but was entombed beneath miles of polar ice.

RAND FLEM-ATH is a librarian and coauthor of The Atlantis Blueprint. He has appeared on the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, NBC, CBC, and the BBC as well as on numerous radio shows. ROSE FLEM-ATH is a novelist, nonfiction writer, and two-time winner of the prestigious Canada Arts Council Grant for fiction. The authors live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

About the Author
Rand and Rose Flem-ath live in Ladysmith, B.C. Both are librarians who have spent several years gathering evidence at the British Museum in their search for Atlantis.

I believe Atlantis has been found
By A Customer
I believe that Flem-Ath has presented a convincing argument and has shown adequate proof for the possible location for the Lost City of Atlantis. He has shown how Plato's account fits perfectly and the author does not try to twist Plato's words as other authors have done to prove their theories. And you do have to take into consideration the ancients maps like the ones in Hapgoods book Maps of Ancient Sea Kings which show Atlantis. I have read other Atlantis stories and none fits like this one is presented. I have recommended it to my friends who have found Flem-Ath theories very believable over others like the theory of Santorini(near Crete). Santorini has too many holes as author Robert Sullivan admits to in his book Atlantis rising but still tries to prove it's Santorini. In Sullivan's book Plato's words are twisted to have Santorini fit. I truley believe Antarctica to be an excellent possibility. To Rose and Rand Flem-Ath excellent book! Now the question is when is the expedition for the excuvation going to take place. Remember Troy was once a myth due to the determination and research of the believers it was found and became a reality. Atlantis may be a myth today but to the beleivers it has already been found it's just a matter of time before tomorrow comes when it becomes a reality. We await for tomorrow to come.

Well done!
By Aria
I've read Robert Bauval, Graham Hancock, and other writers who have cited this book so many times. The research is thorough, the writing tight, was sorry when I came to the end. This is an exceptionally good job on the subject of what some call Civilization One. I recommend it to anyone interested or curious about the ancient past of human beings. Also recommend anything by authors cited above and the 'novel' Atlantis to Aquarius by Leigh Arias Dupre, which puts this all in story form and introduces some interesting reasons for some of the archaeological mysteries of the past.

As resident genealogist, historian, tour guide, and occasional amateur snoop, Victory "Torie" O'Shea can be found anywhere in the historic German town of New Kassel, Missouri-mixing fudge, giving tours, tracing family trees, and even investigating murder...

When shopowner Norah Zumwalt asks Torie for help in piecing together her family lineage to find her missing father, Torie cheerfully agrees. But before Torie delivers her results, Norah is brutally murdered. Now Torie must use her formidable skills at prying into the past-and the human heart-to solve a case of passionate secrets and betrayal. But as the Mississippi floods, she may be in deep trouble when evidence of another killing surfaces-and Torie comes face to face with a family skeleton that will chill her to the bone.

From Booklist
If there was ever an American cozy, MacPherson's first book is it. Victory "Torie" O'Shea is a thirtysomething wife, mother, amateur genealogist, and museum docent living in Missouri. When local shopkeeper Norah Zumwalt asks Torie to research her family tree and a short time later ends up brutally murdered, Torie feels compelled to investigate the crime, despite warnings from the local sheriff to mind her own business. What she finds is a decades-old murder, a mysterious case of mistaken identity, and a bizarre love triangle. MacPherson's story has an appealing down-home style and offbeat charm, and Torie, a midwestern version of Kinsey Milhone, is smart, sassy, and full of Missouri spunk. There are a few rough places where MacPherson tries too hard to be funny or where the plot doesn't quite hang together, but overall, this is an entertaining effort from a promising new writer. Emily Melton

From Kirkus Reviews
A breezy, fun, and woefully unconvincing debut featuring hausfrau-of-all-hobbies Victory O'Shea of the historic German town of New Kassel, Missouri. Young Victory is approached after her costumed tour of an antique-furnished landmark to do a genealogy for a well-groomed but rather glum lady who was long ago deserted by her father. (Victory, among various civic activities, makes an occasional buck doing family trees; meanwhile, if you can believe it, her divorced, wheelchair-bound mother keeps track of Victory's house, husband, chicken coop, and two preschoolers.) Now, Victory traces Norah Zumwalt's father to a nearby town, then finds her client bloodily murdered. Swiftly adding killer-catching to her list of interests, and perhaps egged on by a sexily adversarial relationship with the police chief who once jailed her for speeding, she uncovers a snakepit of neurotic motivations among Norah's ex-husband, grown children, and perhaps unfaithful lover. Further complications arise when Victory discovers that Norah's father has a largely fabricated identity. And then the Mississippi overflows. . . . MacPherson does okay by her cute heroine but--while she pioneers the excellent fictional entr‚e of genealogical research-- is helpless to exploit the fear, grief, and sheer bloody-mindedness that lead to violence here. Stressed female readers may feel that her supermom deserves a case and possibly a career of her own. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Love this author!
By Quirkywriter
I only recently discovered Rett MacPherson and immediately devoured all of this series starring the geneaological detective, Torie O'Shea. The characters are lively, the setting is small town perfection, and the heroine is fun, flawed, and incorrigible. Family Skeletons is a great start to a really wonderful series.

A good mystery
By Mrs. Walters
I really enjoyed reading this book. There is a little geneology, a little Mississippi River flooding, a little history, and a well written suspenseful mystery.

Entertaining, well-plotted, and kind of cozy...
By M. C. Crammer
I've read a couple of other in the series and hadn't realized until I was finished that this was the first. The series centers around Torie O'Shea, a woman who lives in a small town on the Mississippi River south of St. Louis. She's married, has a good family life, works part-time in a historical house giving tours in period costumes, and her hobby of genealogy is sometimes done for pay. This story begins when a woman on a tour comes up to her and asks her to research her family tree -- with particular interest in her father, who disappeared in World War II without a trace. For some reason, Torie takes the work, although she hasn't done genealogy for pay for a while. Very quickly, there's a murder that is quite possibly related to her genealogical search. Someone seems anxious to get Torie to just drop it. Which of the people she's been meeting is the killer, and presumably also the person who has been trying to get her to drop it.

This whole series is entertaining -- well written, well plotted, and, well, cozy. But this particularly volume isn't quite the caliber that I'd give five stars to -- but quite possibly, 4 1/2 stars.

Great Story
By Thomas H. Digiovanni
Probably one of the best books I've read. Lost a lot of sleep turning pages. In a lot of books, the ending simply drops on you in a paragraph. Not so with this book. It is very well done, from beginning to end. If you enjoy legal thrillers, this ones for you. The characters are very human. They remind me of people I've met or know and the development of the way they interact with life is spot on. Highly recommend.

By Kindle Customer
The writer very cleverly writes this story that leaves a surprising ending. It doesn't make the legal system look too swift but then who actually thinks we have a legal system. It is as corrupt as a member of congress. This is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and look forward to reading more of his books.

A good read that keeps you picking it back up
By J. Allen
I wanted to keep reading to see where it was headed. Although I felt I knew what the verdict would be, it did have a surprise twist...and several along the way. Liked the main character. Although I'm female, this is probably more of a guy's book.

Never Call Retreat: Lee and Grant: The Final Victory: A Novel of the Civil War (Gettysburg), by Newt Gingrich, William R. Forstchen

The New York Times bestselling authors of Gettysburg continue their inventive series with this remarkable answer to the great "what-if" of the American Civil War:

After his great victories at Gettysburg and Union Mills, General Robert E. Lee's attempt to bring the war to an end by attacking Washington, D.C., fails. However, in securing Washington, the remnants of the valiant Union Army of the Potomac are trapped and destroyed. For Lincoln, there is only one hope left, that General Ulysses S. Grant can save the Union cause.

It is August 22, 1863. Pursuing the Union troops up to the banks of the Susquehanna, Lee is caught off balance when news arrives that Grant, in command of over seventy thousand men, has crossed that same river. The two armies finally collide in Central Maryland and a bloody weeklong battle ensues along the banks of Monocacy Creek. This must be the "final" battle for both sides.

In Never Call Retreat, Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen bring all of their now critically acclaimed talents to bear in what is destined to become an immediate classic.

The finale of the trilogy does not dissapoint.
By Surface to Air Missle
Never Call Retreat is the third and final book of an alternative Civil War history, co-authored by Newt Gringrich and William Forstchen. This book continues the exciting and well thought out trilogy that is the new pinnacle for the small but growing mini-genre of Civil War fiction.

The book continues in the exact same style as its predecessors, accentuating character relationships between the top generals of both sides (Lee, Grant, Longstreet, President Lincoln, etc). We also get the standard two or three other characters from both sides who are given major chapter time and are interesting everyday characters who are caught up in the action. The other major strength of the book is the fictional tactical moves both sides make and the description of the action. You can tell a lot of homework was done prior to this series.

Overall this was a fantastic series and I enjoyed equally as much as Shaara's series even though it's tough to compare since one is alternative history while the other is a fictional account of actual events. Most importantly, Gingrich and Forstchen clearly have a love and respect for the history of the Civil War and it shows through in the actions and stoicism of his characters and setting. They create the awe and grandeur that is associated with great Civil War media and they are clearly fanatical about all the major characters.

Bottom Line: Obviously should not be read without reading the prior two. A fantastic conclusion to the series.

Those believing Lee's victory at Gettysburg seals the war are in for a bloody surprise
By Aiex Halo
William R. Forstchen and Newt Gingrich continue and end the marvelous Civil War alternate-history trilogy in the same style and sensitivity shown in the previous two volumes. As with the previous two, battle scenes can sometimes be compared to a Steven Pressfield novel, and the emotion and drama is more potent and straining than the previous two novels.

After all but destroying the remnants of the Army of the Potomac along Gunpowder River, Lee is alerted to the Army of Susquehanna under Grant moving from Pennsylvania and attempting to enter Virginia. Rapid maneuvering brings the Army of Northern Virginia to cut them off near Frederick, Maryland, more specifically on the banks of Monocacy Creek.

What transpires is a week-long battle that would make the two month earlier battle of Gettysburg-Union Mills look like a bloody skirmish.

Several well-known American heroes end up dying in the battle who would not have in real history, and others surviving, but each one is done in a surprising, never needless manner. George Armstrong Custer sacrifices his life to seeing the bridges over Monocacy Creek destroyed, severing the Confederate's chance to storm into Frederick unopposed.

While the battle is unfolding, many obstacles stand in the path of a clear victory for Lee, including an unknown saboteur sabotaging locomotives outside of Baltimore, needed to rush the Army of Northern Virginia to Frederick, as well as the removal of the Washington Garrison, now commanded by Winfield Scott Hancock, to march along the Potomac and secure the river to prevent Lee from escaping into Virginia, and the remaining 10,000 of the Army of the Potomac snatching back Baltimore while Lee is fully engaged at Monocacy Creek.

Since it's no secret that the book ends with Lee's defeat, I should say that that defeat does not come anywhere near lightly. The final scene on the battlefield is a heartwrenching one in which the surrounded Army of Northern Virginia, in one last desperate attempt to break free, aims to attack Grant head-on and escape through the Cacoctin Mountains. Just as they are about to charge, Grant's infantry move aside, to reveal fifty artillery cannons pointed directly at Lee's army. He has no choice but to surrender.

From start to finish, heroes are recognized on both sides of the conflict, and in battle lulls, there are times when Confederates and Federals behave more like long lost friends than enemies, just as in history. Heroes are made out of Confederates and Federals alike, including US politicians like Elihu Washburne, CS politicians like Judah Benjiman, and others.

Even if it weren't alternate history, this book and the other two would have been classics in Civil War literature. I am certain of that.

An excellent end to a great series!
By James W. Durney
This is a great alternate history of the Civil War that has captured the characters "warts and all". In place of images, we have flesh and blood people trying to win and willing to pay the price of victory. It is not possible to consider this as a stand-alone book but as the finial story in the epic summer of 1863. "Gettysburg" is the alternate history that planted the Army of Northern Virginia firmly in Pennsylvania. "Grant Comes East", is the logical continuation as the CSA tries to capitalize on its' greatest victory. Battles are an integral part of both books but political considerations consume much of our attention. Double-dealing, backstabbing, jockeying for advantage and the secret agendas of Stanton and Sickles cause Lincoln problems, just as Davis is second guessing Lee, every step of the way.

This book is the end of the war. Both sides have paid a very high price to keep Lee and Grant in the field. In spite of setbacks and numerous problems, both men know they must win the war not next year but now. The South has no more resources and the North has seen to many defeats. While the authors remind us that Tennessee is an important front, the war is here in the East.

Civil War armies were hard to destroy. No one battle was going to keep the men from rallying at some point. In the first of the modern total wars, armies not cities are the objective. This grinding down process is captured in an entertaining and informative story. That pulls you in and ties you to it. While the outcome is not in question, the path to it is. The "path" is the story of grinding unrelenting combat. Taken from the history of the 1864 Overland Campaign, the authors give us a very real feel for both the men in the ranks and the generals in charge. We come to understand in very graphic terms what is required to destroy the other army.

One again, the more you know about the Civil War the more fun the book is. Quotes, things that happened, should have happened or that we wish had happened are worked into the story. Do the authors play with us? YES and it is great fun!

This is an excellent series and this maybe the best book. I started hating the idea of the series and ended one of the biggest fans. Sit back, relax and stay alert. This is a great ride!

Amazon.com Review
This book is an overview of the career of the FBI man who nearly single-handedly created the system for personality profiling of violent offenders. If there's a big-time multiple murderer from about 1950 until now who hasn't been interviewed by Robert Ressler, he probably refused the honor. Indispensable reading for serial killer mavens, and better written than John Douglas and Mark Olshaker's Mindhunter, this book is packed with fascinating details from dozens of cases: The killer John Joubert, for example, started his life of cruelty as a kid one day when he was riding his bike with a sharpened pencil in his hand. He rode up next to a little girl who was walking, and stabbed her in the back with the pencil. Ouch!

From Publishers Weekly
Former FBI agent Ressler, who coined the term "serial killer" in the 1970s, recounts in straightforward style his interviews with such infamous murderers as Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy. A BOMC selection in cloth. Photos.

From Library Journal
The success of Silence of the Lambs has readers fascinated with serial killers. "New applicants to the FBI's Behavioral Sciences Unit are taking Jodie Foster's character as a role model," notes Ressler, who was consulted for the movie but felt it should have been more realistic. The book is an informative and insightful account of Ressler's 30-year FBI career and the development of the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program. Ressler's numerous interviews with convicted killers (e.g., David Berkowitz, Ted Bundy), use of behavioral sciences principles, and many years of detective experience have given him an uncanny ability to "read" a crime scene and develop a criminal profile of the offender. His involvement in multiple serial killer investigations gives the reader an insider's view into police work. This book is an entertaining alternative to Eric W. Hickey's Serial Murderers and Their Victims ( Wadsworth, 1991) and Joel Norris's Serial Killers (Doubleday, 1988). Recommended for general readers and true crime collections. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 1/92.

A Mixed Bag
By California Dreaming
I guess that Robert Ressler, the FBI agent who wrote this book, died a few years ago. Surely that was a loss, as Mr. Ressler helped catch a lot of serial killers, but he even supposedly coined the phrase "serial killer" in the first place, back in the late 70s or early 80s. But this was my first read from him, and I will say immediately that my review will be somewhat mixed.

I've read quite a few books from John Douglas -- an "underling" of Mr. Ressler's, and you'll be reminded of that maybe too many times in "Whoever Fights Monsters" (WFM) -- and overall, I've usually really liked Mr. Douglas' works. I actually think that the book "Inside the Mind of BTK" might be his best, even better than "Mind Hunter," another very strong effort. And since these two gentlemen worked together for so long, I decided to read WFM.

This book starts out very strong, and keeps it up, for at least three-fourths of the way through. In reality, Mr. Ressler is a slightly better writer than Mr. Douglas, and if Mr. Douglas has any weaknesses, I would argue that it would be using unnecessary ad hominems about the serial killers he describes in his books. You might be tempted to scoff, "They're serial killers! They deserve to have bad things written about them!" but that wouldn't be the point. We already know that serial killers are "bad," so I like it more when writers just stick to clinical terminology and avoid potential fallacies.

But oddly, this is how I believe Mr. Ressler ultimately fails in WFM, at least towards the end. He discusses bringing in psychics to help solve cases, which I think is at least problematic. In reality, I think that it's OK for the police and FBI agents to use psychics as a last-ditch effort, but those officials should remain quiet about it. And later, Mr. Ressler describes interviewing John Wayne Gacy and Edmund Kemper remotely for other agents at Quantico. To me, this is totally fine; when it comes to learning about serial killers, it's probably best to go right to the source. But where it fell apart for me: Mr. Ressler describes Mr. Gacy as being "very intelligent and logical." Now, I've watched several interviews on YouTube featuring Mr. Gacy from jail, before he was executed, and he was anything BUT a logical thinker. His "arguments" were full of red herrings, rationalizations, and non sequitors. So, either Mr. Gacy had a "smart day" during the FBI interview -- I highly doubt it -- or Mr. Ressler gives Mr. Gacy way too much credit here. I believe it's the latter.

But the worst part for me: Mr. Ressler's stand on capital punishment. I'm for the death penalty in some scenarios, and he seems to be against it. His position is fine, but I didn't agree with his logic for defending that position. His argument is something along the following lines, and I'm paraphrasing a bit. "Capital punishment is really just a means for people to get even. Furthermore, knowledge can be gained by keeping serial killers alive by interviewing them." Well, this is a little problematic, because there are other reasons for supporting capital punishment, such as "dead men can't kill again." As a matter of fact, I've read several cases in the news recently where convicted murderers have escaped from prison, and killed again; it obviously wouldn't have been possible if they had been executed. Also, people such as Ted Bundy have said that, if their lives are spared, they'll be willing to divulge more information. Most of the time, it's just stall tactics. It surely was with Bundy.

Well, it's too bad that this book ended poorly for me, but most of it is really solid, so I will give Mr. Ressler a 4 out of 5 rating on "Whoever Fights Monsters." I'll also add, "May you rest in peace."

Wow incredible read! A must read for true crime enthusiasts!
By Mary Jo Pierce
I LOVED this book! I've always been a true crime buff. Each book I read about particular cases about killers leaves me wanting....why? How can someone take the life of another with no more remorse or thought than tossing a used tissue in the trash? How can these monsters walk among us, date our daughters or suckle at our breasts without our knowledge? This book helped me to glimpse into the mind of a few killers thanks to Ressler. Thanks to him I didn't have to view these cold soulless eyes or get my hands dirty. We owe much to Ressler's amazing mind, his initiative and I dare say his amazing wife and children. He's dedicated his life to do this dirty work so that we don't have to. I'm sure there are many who are still alive and safe due to his work. I'm certainly going to thank God that he's around! I am grateful to have been able to understand a little better the kind of monsters who live among us and why they do what they do. Robert Ressler is a true American hero. Anyone who reads true crime MUST read this book! It will give an insight and a better understanding of the whys we so earnestly search for in these horrific cases. Thanks Ressler you are appreciated!

Very good book.
By Sue
I loved this book. Ressler takes you step by step through his interviews, why he asks the questions he does, why he responds to the killers the way he does when he gets a certain kind of answer, and it is readable by a layperson. I saw Ressler speak at my college many years ago and was completely engaged by his lecture. When I by chance came across this book, I jumped at the opportunity to read it. If you are fascinated by serial killers and/or the idea of profiling, you will like this book.

I enjoyed this book alot i read it to myself and my mon, it's excellent. Katherine tells an honest heartwrenching story about her family, this comes from the person who knows them the best. She really let's you know that her family is just as much as normal human beings as everyone else. She breaks down the families personalities in the books so you will understand them better, why Michael is so sensitive and talented, to Randy's being independent. This is a really great book.

Thoughts on My Family: The Jacksons by Katrherine Jackson
By A Customer
I found it so refreshing to read a book about the first family of Pop Music without all the tabloid garbage. Katherine tells the story from her POV which is the truth. After all she experienced everything first hand as the Matriarch of the Jacksons. She starts off with her own childhood to the infamous to do with Latoya in 1989 struggling all the while to keep the family together.
It is a heartwarming and straight forward story that only a mother can tell and Katherine does an excellent job on it. My wish is that she would write a sequel so that she can up to date us all on what the family is up to now and share with us her thoughts on two of her newest and most famous grandbabies of them all, namely Prince Michael(PJ) Jackson and Paris Katherine Michael,. A very good book which I highly urge everyone to read.

Positive and very sugarcoated
By BelizeanBeauty
Again the price is ridiculous and not worth it. I actually read this one online for free.

It took me a couple days because it started off very slow. It didn't get quite interesting until the family moved to California.
It was very positive and it was nice of Katherine to speak about each child, their personalities, hobbies, interests etc.

It was very refreshing compared to the negative press that surrounds the family.

Although it is a bit sugarcoated, and she left out alot of details that the movie, and other children speak about, it really showed a mothers view of the family. She knows them all best.

I was literally lol@ the parts about Michael and his weird tastes and excitement he found in things we are fearful of today. He was definately very humorous. Janet was always laid back and easy going, and Latoya:Prissy. Rebbie was the mother of the group. and of course the boys focus and interest was their music.

It was nice for different members of the family to include their input in the book as well. It would be nice if Katherine would release another book soon, and update us on the past few years.
Katherine was definately her childrens biggest fans, and that I found to be very sweet and supporting. Even at the age of 60 she spoke about being on the road with Janet, and still managing to get into the show like a 20 yr old would.

It is indeed a great read if you don't know much about the family and would like more information.
