Doc Holiday

Matt Braun

He came from the American South, a gentleman by breeding, a dentist by training, a gambler by vocation. But as Dr. John H. Holliday, a man fleeing his tragic past, drifted across the West, living among some of the roughest men on the frontier, word spread quickly he never walked away from a fight, and he never drew too late.

Now, from Dodge City to Denver and Cheyenne, from boomtown to sinkholes, "Doc" Holliday was driven by the demons of his past, a skilled gambler and a seasoned mankiller--his name was known and feared long before the O.K. Corral. The story of a man who spoke softly and carried a lightning gun, Doc Holliday is Matt Braun's extraordinary chronicle of the West's most complex and legendary figure.

NOT AS GOOD AS OTHERS BY BRAUN....
By Mac Blair
Have read several other books by Matt Braun and enjoyed most of them. I did not really like this one. Not much in it was the real life of Doc Holliday. It seemed like several chapters were a repeat of the previous one. Doc would get up, dress, go eat breakfast, go play poker, shoot somebody and then go back to his hotel. The next chapter he would be in a different town, get up, dress, go eat breakfast, go play poker, shoot somebody and then go back to his hotel. The towns changed and Doc always had to agree to show up at a hearing the next morning to explain the shooting. Was really disappointed in the book, started just skimming pages as it was so much like previous pages.

Proficient if superficial biographical novel
By F. J. Harvey
Many Matt Braun novels are biographies of notable Western figures and they have become less revisionist and debunking in tone with the passage of time .Earlier works like Tombstone and Manhunter were quite savage in their treatment of men like Wyatt Earp but time has seemingly mellowed Mr Braun and the works have become more respectful ,while thankfully never becoming mere hagiographies . They have however become more formulaic and less interesting in tone .
This is an instance for the book romantices Holliday the shootist and gambler whom we first encounter when he is diagnosed with the consumption that was eventually to kill him .Leaving his native Atlanta and his betrothed , his cousin Mattie ,he sets out for the West hoping the climate will prolong his life .From town to town he drifts building a reputation as a mankiller and a gambler and Braun is at pains to point out his killings were always in self-defence and at the expense of cardsharps and cheaters .
The novel develops a repetitive quality as the incidents are remarkably similar and the middle part of the books is laboured and faintly tedious enlivened mainly by his sparky relationship with the saloon girl Katie Elder ,an unregenerate prostitute and with the loyal Lottie a faro dealer whose love and regard for Holliday are neatly and unsentimentally etched .There is an effecting passage dealing with the severing of his engagement to Mattie that is quietly moving .
Overall while the setting changes --Cheyenne .Texas , Dodge City -the pattern of building a reputation , killing in self -defence and moving on ,does not and eventually becomes a tad wearisome .
In the final part of the book we read of his growing friendship with Wyatt Earp but the book ends before he links with Wyatt in the most famous incident of his careeer ,the O K Corral shootout .It ends with Doc in transit for Tombstone and that notable if over hyped fight .
Doc is well drwan by Braun -a romantic ,doomed and erudite man with a penchent for Shakespeare ( a scene where he defends a classical actor from the drunken saloon patrons is pure My Darling Clementine ) .The dry sardonic graveyard humour of the man is compelling and the aura of death surrounding him comes from within as well as being based on his proficiency with guns
Plain and unfussy style is placed at the service of a fictionalised chronicle rather than a novel
Its okay but too long and the author has done better.

Fact or Fiction?
By Kam
Although some of what is contained within the pages of "Doc Holliday: The Gunfighter" is fact, most of the book's 312 pages contain fiction. I would equate Braun's book with the Hollywood tales told over the past several decades: truth hidden within "dramatic license" including the great film Tombstone. It is unfortunate that Braun does not tell readers that this is a work of fiction because, much like in the 1880s, people will believe that what is detailed-yet-not-substantiated is true thereby continuing the "legend" of Doc Holliday being a cold-blooded, gambling killer.
Braun's novel is a great read for those who have researched Doc Holliday (read the Holliday Tanner book) and know before opening the book that the forthcoming tales were drawn from a Wild West imagination and sources of long ago that did not verify the facts before being printed.
Just one example of miscontrued facts is the infamous sanatorium. Braun says in the closing chapter that Doc admitted himself to a sanatorium in Glendwood Springs (as is also referenced in the Tombstone film); however, a sanatorium never existed in Glenwood (Doc died at the Glendwood Hotel).

Excellent addition to your bookshelf...
By Dawn Kidle
The first 15 pages are devoted to creating the character and I found them very insightful. A nice, wide variety of monologues & scenes and I really liked the addition of several Shakespearean monologues at the end of each section. It's a plus that there Shakespeare monologues that are not often used. Some of the monologues/scenes in the book are from: An Ideal Husband, The Three Sisters, Master Class, I Hate Hamlet, Conversations with my Father, The Miss Firecracker Contest, Steambath, and much more...I highly recommend this book.

A wide range of material for all capabilities
By A Customer
I found that this book was really useful because there is such a wide range of material, however, I did find that when I found a good monalogue and wanted to read the whole play it was not available anywhere on the net that I looked. This was bit annoying because it is impossible to successfully create a character from just a monalogue and is even difficult with the whole play. As I mentioned before there is a very wide range of plays, from Shakespeare to the author himself.

I liked the Wide Selection!
By Bookish Baker
This book has a great many scenes and monologues, and nearly anyone can find one that works for them. While some of the plays that are excerpted are a bit obscure, I found this to be only a minor setback, thanks to the magic of online book purchasing.

Amazon.com Review
In this satisfying, straight-ahead biography of the star of My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, and The Sound of Music, Robert Windeler walks a fine line between adulation and gossip. While his admiration for the former singing sensation shines through the text, he grapples earnestly with her parents' alcoholism, her extramarital affair, and the long stretches in her career without a Broadway or Hollywood hit. What emerges is a multidimensional portrait of a former British child star who lost her way in early success and found herself--and an interesting new toughness--through some midlife failures, which lead to her 1995 Broadway comeback in Victor/Victoria and her defiance of the Tony Awards. There's much more in Andrews of the scrappy survivor Victoria Grant (of Victor/Victoria) than any magical nanny.

From Library Journal
In his second biography of Andrews (following Julie Andrews, LJ 3/15/83), Windeler continues to look at a woman about whom surprisingly little has been written. He covers Andrews's career from its start in 1947, when she was 13, right up to her recent refusal of a Tony nomination for Victor/Victoria as well as her private life. Windeler tries to show the "real" Andrews as anything but Mary Poppins, a role that gave her an Academy Award and a firm place as a star but forever typecast her as perky and sweet. No dramatic roles she has tried have sat well with her public. The irony is that, though she's occasionally foul-mouthed, there really aren't any skeletons in her closet. While there are no bombshells in this interesting but dry biography, 1997 marks Andrews's 50th year in show business, and much has happened since 1983. So even if you have the older book, fans will want this one.?Rosellen Brewer, Monterey Bay Area Cooperative Lib. System, Cal.

Snowfall (The Snowfall Trilogy, Book 1), by Mitchell Smith

Snowfall features another sharp-tongued, uncompromising heroine, Catania Olsen. She is the doctor for and spiritual guardian of a band of hunters who live at the edge of a great Wall of ice in what was once Colorado. In the country of the Trappers, books are hand-copied so that knowledge may be preserved, but the technology described in their precious pages is mostly lost to their fur-clad readers, despite Catania's attempts at scientific treatment and the Trappers' careful husbanding of ancient metal tools.

As a resurgent population moves west and north from the more settled places that had once been the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf Coast of the United States, they drive tribesmen-Cree, Arapaho, and more-before them. On the run and desperate to find new homes, the tribes slaughter entire populations to claim their lands. The Trappers are innocent of this until Jack Monroe, banished years before for murdering a fellow Trapper, arrives, urging them to flee their ancestral home, the Trappers do not listen until nearly too late, until the first enemy arrows have found their marks.

The southern flight of the surviving Trappers is a journey through time as well as space. From a frozen northland where summer lasts two chilly weeks through a burgeoning forest where the Trappers taste their first beef to a gulf coast where warm breezes carry exotic scents and sounds; from a primitive life of hunting and trapping to the luxurious Gardens, where people can still weave and make paper, to a bustling trade mart where man-beasts created by unnatural science tread the dirt streets, Catania is shocked to recognize that the proud Trappers have spent generations clinging to civilization with their fingernails.

The journey into the warm lands will change Doctor Catania Olsen, mind, heart, and soul. She will gain and lose a love, see great wisdom and greater folly, witness amazing miracles and terrifying science, and, most surprising to herself, become a mother. Finally, she will have to choose between her people and her freedom.

From Publishers Weekly
Suspense novelist Smith (Reprisal) delivers a dark, creepy tale of human survival set several hundred years after an apocalypse caused by a change in Jupiter's orbit. Almost a sci-fi yarn without the gadgets and gizmos, Smith's thriller focuses on groups of people kicked backwards down the stairs of knowledge and discovery, trying to maintain a society in the face of starvation and invasion. North America is divided geographically by an ice wall a mile high that runs east to west, and culturally by competing clans, fiefdoms and kingdoms that trade and war with each other constantly. The Trappers are a fur-clad band of hunters who live in the frozen wasteland of the Colorado mountains. Their knowledge and language come from stories told by elders and from a few old books salvaged after the apocalypse generations before. When invaders from the north penetrate the ice wall, the Trappers are attacked and displaced from their territory. Under the leadership of a renegade named Jack Monroe and a doctor, Catania Olsen, the Trappers flee south toward the unknown lands of the Warm-time people. Through harsh and unfamiliar terrain, the desperate Trappers journey to find a sanctuary where they may live in peace, but they meet only death and brutality at every step. Amid the blood and gore of barbaric battles, costly encounters with more advanced societies and bitter character conflicts, Smith reads the palm of the future and finds that it looks none too bright.

From Library Journal
Since the catastrophe that collapsed civilization and caused a new Ice Age, the Trappers have inhabited a snowbound world for generations. When an invading tribe slaughters most of them, Jack Monroe, a former outcast, and Catania Olsen, a self-taught doctor, form an unlikely partnership to take the survivors to the warmer southern lands. This latest novel by Smith (Reprisal) explores the resilience of the human spirit in a world where book learning is almost nonexistent and survival is the order of the day. Fans of survival fiction and sf adventure will enjoy this tale of courage and persistence. For most sf and general fiction collections.

From Booklist
Smith's striking, scarred heroine, Catania Olsen, is the doctor of her clan, a few hundred people sheltering against the flanks of a glacier in what used to be Colorado. Hunting and trapping keep them alive and provide them furs for trade. Since Jupiter altered its orbit, plunging Earth into endless winter, humans have lost much yet remember much else: language, medicine, society, and civility. Books, lovingly copied and recopied, are a great resource for Catania when she is trying to heal illnesses and injuries. But nothing can save her clan when a fierce group of Sioux-descended warriors invades their settlement and either kills or enslaves most of them. Fleeing with a handful of adults and sled dogs, Catania journeys out of the icy wilderness into the forest, where her strength and intelligence may be just enough to keep the refugees alive. Add to this adventure the psychological study of a proud woman secretly in love with a recently returned exile, and the combination makes riveting reading. Roberta Johnson

Very interesting
By Bradley Thomas
I was surprised by this book. I really thought it was a kind of pulp post apocalyptic thing, but I usually like that so I got it. It was far deeper and intricate than I anticipated. The characters were not cookie cutter carbons but had interesting fragilities. One moment in the book, where the women of the tribe, spend their last minutes shooting arrows into the enemy as their toddlers stood beside them nearly made me cry. Anyway, for pulp Sci-Fi, it was good. Peace to you.

A SAVAGE SURVIVAL TALE
By King Reviewer
Thanks to Amazon.com I found yet another author that I never heard of but writes a novel that sounded very interesting to me. If you like novels in the grand tradition of William Sarabande's FIRST AMERICANS series, or like post-holocaust adventure stories - then this one's for you!
Mitchell Smith's SNOWFALL is a well told tale of an Earth that has gone through another ice age and has taken civilization away, leaving cities such as Chicago, with snowdrifts as high as the tallest skyscrapers. It is never told what exactly happened to the earth, but it is told and hinted to a long, long, time ago as the story is taking place.
The story opens with a band known as the Trappers, a small collection of families that united and hunt the frozen tundra of what once was Colorado,I think. Their only link to the past is old journals and books that have been re-copied over and over thru time and they call copybooks.
The first chapter starts right off with the hunters of the band getting food for their camp when they are attacked by Cree. The Cree are the modern-day equivalent of indians, but most of their bloodline are white, they have just taken to the old indian ways of survival. As the story goes on, the trappers are being forced out of their hunting grounds and being pushed south, along with all the other tribes from the north, like a dominoe effect. Fighting to keep their land, the trapper's, along with an outcast that comes back named Jack, a losing fight ensues and most of the trappers are decimated and Jack finds himself a leader of a band on the run. The band's head doctor of the tribe is a clorful woman named Catania. Catania is much more than a doctor as the reader finds out as the story unfolds. I thought that this book would not have much action and adventure that I'm partial too, but it had it plenty enough along with lots of interesting characters to keep you glued to each page.
The adventures and tragedies that befall the running band of trappers as they flee ever southward is an enjoyable read as the reader see's the changes in the land and it's peoples as the trappers go deeper south. The ending is not what I expected, but it was good nonetheless. It read like an epic movie. I recommend this book to anyone.

Salt of the Earth: A Mother, A Daughter, A Murder, by Jack Olsen

Joe Gere said he died on the afternoon his twelve-year-old daughter Brenda disappeared. It was left to Brenda's mother Elaine to sustain her stricken family, search for her missing child, and pressure the authorities for justice. From the first minutes of the investigation, suspicion fell on Michael Kay Green, a steroid-abusing "Mr. Universe" hopeful, but there was no proof of a crime, leaving police and prosecutors stymied.

Tips and sightings poured in as lawmen and volunteers combed the Cascades forest in the biggest search on Northwest history. Years passed with no sight of the blue-eyed girl or the bright clothes she'd worn on the day she disappeared, but Elaine remained undaunted.

Salt of the Earth is the true story of how one woman fought and triumphed over life-shattering violence and how she healed her family-and herself.

Amazon.com Review
The title of this book refers neither to the murderer who destroyed the hard-won tranquillity of a young couple and their three children, nor to the 12-year-old victim, but to the victim's mother. Without subtracting an iota from the uniqueness of her story, Jack Olsen portrays Elaine Gere as one of those heroically strong American women whose lives usually pass unheralded. We follow her indomitable spirit from a childhood in squalor, to marriage and family, to the disappearance of her daughter, through the baffling and enervating aftermath of a high-profile crime, through the years when her devastated husband flounders in alcoholism and turns violent, to the final healing of her broken family. David Guterson, author of Snow Falling on Cedars, writes, "Salt of the Earth constitutes a literary achievement of the highest order. It is the complexity of life, its mystery and beauty, its violence and love and terrible strangeness, that Jack Olsen forces us to confront here."

From Publishers Weekly
Anyone who doubts that women are the stronger sex would be well advised to read this tale of Elaine Mayzsak Gere, who not only endured but triumphed over two violent tragedies in her family. Raised in California and trained to work hard even as a child, she married Joe Gere, a local boy who served in Korea, became a police officer and was badly hurt in a confrontation with two drugged arsonists. After many moves up and down the West Coast, they settled in a town near Seattle, where in 1985 their daughter, Brenda, was abducted and murdered. Her body was found six years later. Joe came from a drinking family and turned into an alcoholic after Brenda's disappearance. In 1988, he committed suicide, shooting himself in the presence of his wife and two young sons. In 1993, the man who everyone was almost certain had abducted Brenda was finally tried, convicted and sentenced to life. Thus Elaine, who had struggled to hold the family together after the kidnapping, now had to help her sons recuperate from the twin traumas. Her firm religious faith and strong work ethic sustained her, and the story of her indomitability gives Olsen (Doc) the material for one of his most penetrating books. True Crime Club featured selection; Literary Guild, Mystery Guild, Doubleday Book Club featured alternates; author tour.

From Library Journal
In 1985, 12-year-old Brenda Gere was abducted from her home and murdered by Michael Green, an unemployed bodybuilder and ex-football player. In something of a departure, best-selling true crime writer Olsen (Charmer, LJ 10/15/94) focuses mainly on the victims-the Gere family and friends-rather than Green, although the latter's pathology is addressed. The heartbreaking loss of a child drove Brenda's father into acute alcoholism and ultimately to suicide. Mother Elaine-"the salt of the earth"-managed to cope and survive for the sake of her two sons and herself. While the Geres' tragedy seems much too common in today's society, their sad but also uplifting story could not have had a more skillful, sensitive narrator. Recommended for true-crime collections.

Jack Olsen is great at true crime. He leaves no stone unturned, yet you never get bored. I have to agree with a fellow reviewer when he said that more time should have been spent on Michael Kay Green. The story, nonetheless is riveting. I could not put the book down. Elaine Gere is one tough lady, you sometimes feel like you are reading ficton yet it is real! I highly recommend "Salt".

Harrowing
By JMack
A longtime fan of true crime, I don't know that I have ever read a more saddening book than "Salt of the Earth". This is not to suggest that it is a bad book. On the contrary, it exhibits excellence in the genre of true crime. Jack Olsen is a superb writer. The story itself though, is quite sad.

Although the story takes time to unravel, I respect the fact that the end is not given away at the beginning. Skillfully, the author even leave the outcome in doubt at times throughout the book. It is devastatingly sad when a child disappears or is murdered. The disappearance and murder of Brenda Gere anger the community as the prime suspect seemed obvious. Michael Kay Green, a steroid abusing former football player, was sighted near the scene and left circumstantial clues. Yet bringing him to trial would prove time-consuming and problematic. The question of whether a trial for murder would ever take place began to arise.

One aspect of this book that sets it apart from other books in true crime is the insight into the family of the accused and the family of the victim. Particularly in the case of the victim, it is unnerving to read of the slow and painful death of the victim's father. In the case of the family of the accused, the background information lends itself to a solid understanding of the accused.

Ultimately, "Salt of the Earth" is drawn together by the strong woman at the center of the story. Elaine Gere, Brenda's Mother, is an admirable character that makes the story so compelling. She makes the book more than just another true crime book.

getting to know the facts
By doug
as one of the people to find the remains of little Brenda and to feel some of the horror behind what was her demise i found it comforting to find out that her killer was already in jail at the time we found her. Jack Olsen's powerful Story telling of the family and the details of what led to the horrible ending of a life, gave us some closher to what had been stunning and frightening to the famiies involved in the descovery of Brenda's Resting place.

It seems innocent enough. A disgraced British colonel bequeaths a mysterious letter to his only son. But the moment Adam Scott opens the yellowing envelope, he sets into motion a deadly chain of events that threatens to shake the very foundations of the free world.

Within days, Adam's lover is brutally murdered and he's running for his life through the great cities of Europe, pursued not only by the KGB, but by the CIA and his own countrymen as well. Their common intent is to kill him before the truth comes out. While powerful men in smoke-filled rooms plot ever more ingenious means of destroying him, Adam finds himself betrayed and abandoned even by those he holds most dear.

When at last he comes to understand what he is in possession of, he's even more determined to protect it, for it's more than a matter of life and death-it's a matter of honor.

In 1966, Adam Scott, an unemployed British ex-army officer with an uncertain future, attends the reading of his disgraced father's will. Part of his inheritance is a letter detailing the events of Hermann Goering's suicide and two unopened letters from the Nazi general giving him access to a Swiss bank vault and the valuable Russian icon it contains. However, a veritable state secret is concealed in the painting and the KGB and the CIA both want it before the expiry of a crucial deadline. Scott's perilous journey across Europe to the questionable safety of England is by plane, car, foot, bus, ambulance, van, and ferry as he stays one step ahead of death with the assistance of farmers, salesmen, racing cyclists, hoodlums, and an entire orchestra. An epic chase thriller tidily concluded with a series of neat twists. Highly recommended. Literary Guild main selection. John North, L.R.C., Ryerson Polytechnical Inst., Toronto

Return To Ithaca, by Randy Lee Eickhoff

At the height of the Vietnam War, twenty-seven members of a U.S. special elite team were dropped into North Vietnam to fight alongside the Rands and Montagnards against the communist regime. Their job was to ambush troops along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, one of the most dangerous of the war. Of the twenty-seven men who went in, only three made it back.

One of them is Henry Morgan a modern-day Odysseus struggling to find a way of returning from the Vietnam War. Now living in a monastery, he has turned his back on the world that turned its back on him. But times change and there is a need for a man like Morgan again. A man who has made his voyage. An Odysseus who can bring order to a chaotic world.

From Publishers Weekly
The protagonist of Eickhoff's latest novel, an ambitious combination western and war story, is a guilt-ridden, melancholy veteran named Henry Morgan, one of the few survivors of an elite team dropped into the jungles of Vietnam to coordinate hit-and-run raids by montagnard tribesmen on Vietcong troops. Eickhoff explicitly likens Morgan to Odysseus, combining both of Homer's epics to encompass Morgan's time in Vietnam and his troublesome return to a country he no longer understands. From a Kentucky monastery, Morgan recounts his past: beginning four years after his insertion among the mountain tribesmen, he describes the death of his brother, Billy, during an attack after a villager defects to Hanoi. Morgan's CO, a scheming colonel named Black (possibly Agamemnon), manipulates Morgan into using the montagnards as expendable troops, a duty that eventually destroys Morgan's peace of mind. The narrative is punctuated at intervals by the voice of Dog (Tiresias), an old Sioux hand on the Morgan family ranch in the fictional Plains town of Ithaca who plays the role of chorus in Morgan's sad story. Eickhoff (Fallon's Wake) is straightforward about his adaptation of the Greek epic to fit his semi-autobiographical tale (he was one of three survivors of a unit of 27 integrated with the montagnard tribesmen in the Vietnam highlands). While he draws some interesting parallels between North American (including Lakota Sioux) and Southeast Asian tribal worldviews, the wartime element takes up far more room than the journey home, making for a somewhat contrived thematic relationship. Both the landscape and the emotional atmosphere of Vietnam are powerfully portrayed, however, and one must admire Eickhoff's imaginative attempt to compare the haunting fate of Vietnam veterans, returned from brutal combat to a society that largely scorned them, to a classic narrative of a dislocated life.

From Booklist
This strange tale, told by the author of Fallon's Wake (2000), begins in the present on a ranch in the Dakotas, then ventures back to the past, when Henry Morgan is the commander of a band of American and Montagnard troops in Vietnam (the latter are the mountain people who often fought alongside the Americans). Morgan must help a village chief pursue his own son, who has gone over to the Vietcong. During that time, he will watch his own brother, who followed him to Vietnam, die. Morgan seems part Rambo and part die-hard warrior; but wartime heroics don't translate to a welcome home back in the States. His first encounters stateside leave him feeling alone and abandoned by a country that has changed. Rather than return to the ranch and help his father, Morgan enters a monastery, where his nephew finds him and confronts him with the news that he is needed back at the family ranch. He has choices to make and a past to reconcile with his present. Marlene Chamberlain

"A classic novel."-Publishers Weekly

"One of the most powerful novels written about the men who went away to fight America's most hated war and who could not return home again . . . Once you experience it through Henry Morgan's eyes, you'll understand as all veterans do, what happened to these men and what they gave up for their country . . . . Most powerful . . . . Each narrative passage is written with the passion and credibility that only one who's been there and finally found his way home again can feel."-The Tulsa Sunday World

A Complex Novel
By A Customer
Mr. Eickhoff's "Return to Ithaca" is a hard look at how a war hero is regarded when he returns home. I am not a Vietnam veteran, but I can say that I felt the agony of what Henry Morgan went through upon his return and the sense of futility that seems to control his emotions. This is a deep, emotional novel, a dark look into the inner man going through an impossible emotional labyrinth in trying to find the person he was before he left for the War. The best war novel to appear in years. Comparable to Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead" but with more intensity than Mailer managed. This is without doubt the work of a tortured genius.

just two little things
By A. User
I found the best part of the book to be the relationship with American "advisors", special forces, and the montagnards tribesman and how loyal they were during the war. I grew up during Vietnam and did not get drafted. I remember well the news of the montagnards and their loyalty and the shame we brought upon them when we deserted them and thousands of other good S. Vietnamese after the withdraw of Amercian forces. The book was one of the best I have read, characterizing a person before the war, during the war and the effects after. I give it a 5 star rating because it deserves it. I read it and remind myself of my 1st cousin, a compny Capt. killed while setting up a firebase in the Central highlands. Two things that did not seem appropriate as descriptors for the period, "clips" instead of magazines, and the use of AR-15 instead of the M16 introduced later in the early years of VN. Thanks for an excellent book.

Chapter One
The One That Got Away

Jonathan Nyce was the third consecutive namesake in his family. Always fascinated with his ancestry, he once researched his family tree, going back to the Eighteenth Century, when a female member of the family married a native American Indian.

His grandfather Jonathan Nyce had come from Trappe, Pennsylvania, and was a builder. His father, Jonathan Jr., had been born in 1925, growing up around Collegeville, a rural blue-collar northern suburb of Philadelphia.

The Nyces were a prominent family in the area, and Jonathan Jr.’s Uncle Wesley was a daredevil stunt pilot, with his own touring aerial show. In 1939 he’d bought the Pottstown Limerick Airport for the knock-down price of $50,000 before becoming a test pilot for the American Air Force.

“Uncle Wes tested B49s,” said his nephew proudly. “One time he didn’t bail out in time, and crashed into a dump.... he wasn’t hurt though.”

Unfortunately, Wesley Nyce’s luck didn’t hold out. In 1948 the fearless flyer was killed during an aerial display, when his stunt plane failed to come out of a roll.

“It was a tragedy,” said Jonathan Jr. “He was killed in front of his family.”

Jonathan Jr. also held a pilot’s license, but joined the U.S. Navy as a teenager, during the Second World War. Soon after his discharge in November 1945, he met a pretty young girl of Polish descent named Emma Dusea, at a local dancehall. The two found much in common, sharing a passion for ballroom dancing, and were soon dating.

“We met dancing,” said Emma. “And we’ve been going to dances ever since.”

On February 26, 1949, they married in Delphi, Pennsylvania, and settled in Skippack, Pennsylvania, where the mechanically gifted Jonathan Jr. found a job running a hosiery mill.

“We had ninety-six machines,” he remembered. “I guess you could say I designed things, and I made special stockings for showgirls.”

Before long Emma became pregnant, and on May 26, 1950, Jonathan Wesley Nyce was born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Named after the family flying ace, he was the first of four sons Emma would bear Jonathan Jr. Two years later David was born, followed by Michael in 1955, and their youngest son Richard came two years later.

Money was tight in the Nyce household and Jonathan Jr. often had a tough time making ends meet on the scant wages of a stockingmaker. So when Jonathan was four, the family moved to Gettysburg, where his father found a better paying job at another mill, as well as moonlighting for several others for extra money.

Later Jonathan would often tell a fanciful story of how in 1953, his father narrowly missed making a huge fortune.

“My father influenced me because of something he didn’t do,” Nyce would cryptically explain to U.S. 1 newspaper in 1999. “He worked around the clock one night to design the machinery to knit the first pair of pantyhose. But because he had a new family, he was unable to capitalize on that discovery, whereas his partner was able to run with it.”

According to Jonathan, his father then gave him savvy business advice, which he had lived by ever since: That if he was ever in a similar position, he should “capitalize” on the opportunity, as there may not be another.

“I honestly think that’s one of the things that later drove Jonathan,” said his future mentor at East Carolina University, Dr. Wallace R. Wooles. “He wasn’t about to make that mistake again.”

Today his father, now 80, lays no claim to inventing the first pantyhose-manufacturing machine.

“I don’t know,” he says wistfully. “I doubt that I invented it.”

In 1955, the Nyce family moved again, this time to Norristown, and Jonathan began first grade at St. Patrick’s School, where he made his first Catholic communion.

As a child, Jonathan was a loner, preferring his own company to that of the other children in his primary school. He had difficulty adjusting socially, and was a serious, quiet boy, who largely lived in his own make-believe world.

But he had a vivid imagination and loved to write stories and poetry.

“He wrote beautiful poems,” said his mother, Emma. “He was very good.”

As a young child, Jonathan was fascinated by science, and was always doing experiments of one kind or another. He dreamed of becoming a doctor.

“I guess in our family, pilots and doctors are the main occupations,” said his father, as his sons would later be split between both professions.

In 1957, the Nyce family finally settled down in a large ranch-style house on Mill Road in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, where Jonathan Jr. and Emma live to this day.

“We moved here when Jonathan was seven,” said his mother. “Our baby [Richard] was just born.”

Growing up, Jonathan and his brother Michael both suffered from acute asthma and were prone to attacks at any time. It was a terrible physical handicap for a child, making Jonathan feel vulnerable and insecure.

“It’s hard to imagine something worse than not being to breathe,” he would later explain.

By the time he was 12 years old, Jonathan was six feet tall, standing head and shoulders above his grade school friends. But he soon put his height to his advantage on the school basketball court, where he discovered a passionate love of the game.

Jonathan played center in grade school and also regularly played pick-up games with his father and three brothers, in their Mill Road back yard.

“We’d play a lot of basketball,” said Jonathan Jr. “We had a lot of fun.”

When the tousle-haired blonde boy started at Methacton High School, directly behind his home, he was as “skinny as a beanpole.”

Jonathan was “little better than average” academically, according to his father, and his favorite subject then was English. The future medical pioneer displayed little obvious aptitude for the sciences at this point.

“He loved to write,” said his father. “He was always interested in the medical field and then he got more interested as he got older.”

Methacton had a solid reputation as a quality public high school, with a flexible curriculum tailored to each pupil’s needs.

Jonathan’s gigantic size—he would ultimately reach six feet, four inches—set him aside from the other boys. But beneath his quick wit and geniality lay a sensitive, painfully shy boy, who never truly felt comfortable in social situations.

“He was the biggest guy in the school,” remembered Eugene Hallman, who became close friends with him in seventh grade, when they took several classes together. “He wasn’t one of the most popular kids in school, but we got along.”

Jonathan was soon picked to play for the school’s basketball team, the Methacton Warriors, where he proved an effective defensive center guard. He also represented the school at tennis, as well as being active in student government and selling advertising for the student newspaper, Smoke Signals.

His best friend at Methacton was Samuel Colville, who also happened to be the school’s second tallest boy. According to their classmates, both boys vied for the attentions of a pretty girl named Sue Wessner, who briefly dated both of them. Samuel Hamme, a fellow Methacton student, says Sue was as “outgoing” as Jonathan was “introverted.” Soon after the junior prom, where Sue was Jonathan’s date, they split up, remaining close platonic friends until they left school.

Jonathan Nyce might have been tall and handsome, but there was also something awkward and ungainly about him. He was nervous around girls, seldom venturing outside the security of his small circle of friends.

“He wasn’t what you’d call a ladies’ man,” said Hamme, who was also on the Warriors basketball team. “He just really wasn’t.”

He remembers Jonathan as “quiet, reserved, but a nice guy,” and difficult to get close to.

“I didn’t party with him that much,” said Hamme. “He wasn’t considered one of the more popular kids.”

Eugene Hallman also remembers his friend as “fairly backward,” when it came to dating girls.

“He was awkward,” said Hallman. “But we were the same in that way.”

All through his high school and college years he never had a proper girlfriend after Sue, although he did manage to find a date for the senior prom. And while his friends went out on dates, he preferred to study and pursue his own scientific experiments.

“Jonathan was always interested in medicine as a teenager,” remembered his father. “He always did a lot of experiments.”

One day when he was seventeen, his parents came home to discover an “awful” smell, coming from the kitchen.

“He had a raccoon in a pot on the stove in Clorox,” said his father. “He decided he’d cook it and take the meat off because he wanted to see its skeleton.”

His mother explained that Jonathan had obtained the raccoon carcass from a furrier, to study its anatomy.

“But that was nothing out of the ordinary,” she explained. “He was just learning.”

Jonathan and Eugene Hallman co-founded Methacton’s Explorers troop, an offshoot of the Boy Scouts. They recruited several other boys into the group, selecting c...

INTERESTING READ
By CASSANDRA
John Glatt's research was well done. Reading NEVER LEAVE ME, gives the reader excellent insight re: both the victim's and the accused's background. With that info you can understand where both Dr. Nyce and his wife, Michelle, were in their marriage.
Objectively written. I felt compassion for the children, the Dr.'s family and Michelle's family.
I will read other Glatt's books.
