About the Author

Terry C. Johnston was born on the first day of 1947 on the plains of Kansas, and lived all his life in the American West. His first novel, Carry the Wind, won the Medicine Pipe Bearer's Award from the Western Writers of America, and his subsequent books appeared on bestseller lists throughout the country.

A very well written acount of the Modoc War

This is the first (and not last) book I've read by Johnston, and it was very good. At times it was hard to keep reading it, at times it was hard to put down. I'm very glad I read this, and I think anyone else interested in this time period should definetly pick this up. And of course read it.

Good story of a far-west Indian conflict

This entry of the "Plainsmen Series" takes readers to the California-Oregon border where hostilities between white settlers and Modocs are detailed in a fine narrative. The issue again is the dispute about land that both the Indians and homesteaders claim, obliging treaty commissioners to arbitrate, of course, on the side of the ranchers. Animosity between the whites and Modocs escalates and soon leads to military conflict. The story is replete with betrayals, not only of the peace commissioner General Canby, but of Modoc chief Captain Jack by his own men who later received amnesty from the government by forcing the surrender of their erstwhile leader. The grueling campaign in the treacherous Lava Beds is where most of the skirmishes take place, but the Modoc fighting men, while cunning and fierce on the battlefield, are not portrayed in a very noble light. Seamus Donegan, on the trail of an uncle living in Lost River Valley, takes center stage in this bloody and thankless war of extermination of an Indian tribe.

the devils backbone......the lava beds..the stronghold

this is a very good fictional writing of the modoc war. its is historical and very accurate of the events that took place...the main characters in the book are fictional but the real people are intertwined with the fictional people. I am of modoc decent and many stories have been passed down to the younger generation. so mr Johnston did a excellent writing job in this book. One thing that wasn't totally accurate , was the portrayal of the soldiers in a bad light. They were facing one of fierces clan of native American of the era..it was said in a news paper of that time ,only modocs kill like that.. I highly recommend this book

The Diamond family...

At the head of the family is Red Diamond, a selfish, controlling and filthy rich father..his three sons Jett, an ex druggie and a successful model in Italy, Max, a real estate broker and Chris, a Hollywood entertainment lawyer.

The Diamond family is far from being perfect. Red Diamond treats everyone including his three sons like trash. Chris is constantly busy with clients with ridiculous demands and he has a secret that could cause him to lose everything. Max is engaged to a wealthy girl name Amy, but when a murder hits home..he's the prime suspect. And Jett use to be an alcholic and druggie, but now that he is a model in Italy will his past come to haunt him?

Jackie Collins also features Liberty,a biracial wanna be singer who doesn't know who her father is and her mother Diahann..a ex jazz singer has a deep dark secret of her own.

Secrets, lies, murder, betrayal and sex make up exciting ingredients for Lovers and Players. This book kept my attention from the first page to the last. Jackie Collins is now one of my favorite authors!!!

My proverbial Jackie cherry has been broken

This book was my first foray into the dramatic world of Jackie Collins and it was the guiltiest pleasure. The book was near impossible for me to put down. It was an easy yet totally engrossing read. It played like a campy soap opera rollercoaster ride, and yes, it was fun! A reviewer was correct in saying that the character development was slightly weak and you didn't end up caring for anyone in particular but it didn't hinder my reading experience. I didn't know what to expect from a Jackie Collins novel and I would have to say I can see why she's so popular.

Chuck MF-ing NORRIS?

Yes, it really is THE Byron Coley: longtime "Forced Exposure" contributor, prolific rock critic, published poet, buddy of Thurston Moore, and frequent "on-camera authority" in indie rock docs such as those about the Fair brothers and the musician who may or may not be Sterling Smith. Read the very first page, and you'll have no doubts about the authenticity of its authorship. Is it a great bio? Well, let's just say it's noteworthy for the sheer weirdness of its existence. If you can find a reasonably affordable copy in halfway decent shape, it's worth the investment.

Lots of laughs

This featherweight biography of former karate champ and bad-movie king Chuck Norris boasts unintentional comedy on practically every page. There are Norris's signature veiled putdowns of late friend and co-star Bruce Lee, which say a lot more about his lingering insecurities than anything else. (Norris had difficulty understanding why "such a cult has grown up about [Lee] since his death", and noted that Lee "never fought professionally, but he was a good technician.") There is the great man's assessment of marijuana smokers. (Norris took his family to San Francisco's Tenderloin district to see the premiere of a film in which he played a bit part: "We get into the theater and people are smoking pot and all this...you know, there're a lot of perverts in there.") There's even a glowing endorsement of Ronald Reagan. ("What I like about Reagan is that he doesn't pussyfoot around. Like with Grenada...The guy may stick his foot in his mouth occasionally, but he says what he feels. If you don't like it, that's just tough." Wow. Talk about sticking your big, ugly foot in your big, stupid mouth.)
My heartiest laugh, however, was reserved for author Byron Coley, solely on the basis of the following passage: "Norris didn't really care if, as the Chicago Tribune maintained, 'the state of the martial-arts movie has been languishing ever since the death of Bruce Lee.' Let it languish! If a guy like the acrobatic Jackie Chan (sometimes called 'the Korean Burt Reynolds') wanted to be heir-apparent to the chop socky kingdom of Lee, let him."
Really? Jackie Chan is sometimes called "the Korean Burt Reynolds"? By whom? Can anyone think of a single example? I doubt it, because Jackie Chan is not Korean and Byron Coley likes to pull things out of his rear end. That Chuck Norris is one classy guy, though--no chop socky typecasting for him! He prefers to do more sophisticated films, heh heh heh.

THANKFULLY IT'S SMALL

Having read lots of Harlan Ellison's collections, I can honestly say that this one is not one of his best. You won't find any Hugo-award winners in here, folks. Of course, I've read LOTS of Harlan stories that DIDN'T win awards and were absolutely WONDERFUL. There is one such story in this collection that comes to mind--Erotophobia. Remember the opening scene of Austin Powers? Where he's being chased by all these women. That's the basic idea for that story. Absolutely hilarious. As for the rest of the stories in this book, I didn't find any that were Harlan at his worst. Even the story Catman, the longest and least enjoyable of the bunch had a little something to it. I wouldn't recommend that first time Harlan-readers start here, though. But for those of us that have read our Harlan, this is definitely worth getting.

Nice collection by the SF short story master

Ellison's stories punch where it hurts. Approaching Oblivion (1974) is filled with transfixing tales about violent future racism ("Knox"), humanity's last moments ("Kiss of Fire"), the desperate desire to change one's own past ("One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty"), a last rebel against the militarizing system ("Silent in Gehanna"), and familial rivalry within a vast arcology ("Catman"), etc...

They are terrifying and vicious, immersive and gut-wrenching, and span from baroque far future speculations to near future warnings. Above all, they are well-written and intelligent. Many are infused with (pseudo) autobiographical content and lament the societal ills that Ellison sees as most pervasive and dangerous and most of the time he believes it's futile to do anything about it.

Warning: I suspect some readers will find the nihilistic and caustic tone of the volume tedious. Ellison proclaims at the end of his introduction: "This is what tomorrow looks like, dummy" (16). And he can't resist taking a swipe at the reader (and the American public in general), "if you hear me sobbing once in a while, it's only because you've killed me, too, you f[*****]" (16).

But the sobs are beautiful...

...and I need more of his collections.

For fans of New Wave SF and vitriolic social SF.

Brief Plot Summary/Analysis

"Knox" (1974) 5/5 (Very Good): The collection starts off with a mordant and literary story of a dystopic future plagued by racism -- a future (perhaps) where the Patriotism Party holds great allure. The work is particularly hard-hitting due to the fact that similar white supremacist groups exist today. Knox rises through the ranks of the Patriotism Party by engaging in hate crimes, memorizing long lists of racial epithets, and practicing at the shooting range. Ellison masterfully pairs Knox's growing hatred of minorities (and the events after his first kill) with the slow disintegration of his family (especially his love for his wife). Although `Knox' is a product of Ellison's day, these issues have in no way disappeared. A terrifying read...

"Cold Friend" (1973) 4.25/5 (Good): A vaguely SF story (speculative might be the better term) of man who dies of cancer yet spontaneously resurrects (or so he thinks). But when he awakes in the hospital he discovers the world has changed.... The people are gone, his town is the world, the food in the stores are always stocked and spoil, and strange effect that violate gravity occur at the edge of his world. Soon he is beset by barbarians that rush down the deserted streets which he fights off with paperbacks -- and he sees a girl in semi-translucent white dress who seems to have unusual power over the nature of his world.

"Kiss of Fire" (1973) 4.25/5 (Good): A fantastic vision of a decadent and baroque far future.... In a vast space vessel that gathers the memories of the inhabitants of recently destroyed planets, Redditch, who programs their deaths -- wanders the halls in a veritable malaise. This is a future where everyone has become bored with their near endless existence -- the only thing that titillates and evokes emotion is death. Ellison pulls an intriguing trick that might put off some readers -- the language, despite its incredibly flowery nature ("He drank ice crystals laced with midnight and watched their world burn"), feels oddly empty... Perhaps this references the vast array of stimuli the characters experience but remain unstimulated by. Whether this was his intention or not -- the language might simply be overkill -- the effect combined with the plot is rather disturbing.

"Paulie Charmed the Sleeping Woman" (1962) 3/5 (Average) does not contain speculative elements... Paulie played jazz and Ginny loved to listen night after night. And when Ginny dies Paulie gets depressed and wants to play at her grave. A simple tale told with some jazz-like verve...

"I'm Looking for Kadak" (1974) 4/5 (Good): I suspect that if I were Jewish (as Ellison is) I would understand more of this highly original story. Ten Jewish aliens remain on the planet Zsouchmuhn.... and one of them dies. Unfortunately, ten are needed to perform a sacred death ceremony. These aliens have many limbs and their souls speak long after they are dead... The dead alien's soul tells the remaining Jews that they need to track down Kadak in order to complete the ceremony. One of the aliens sets out to find Kadak and discovers all the bizarre cults and religions Kadak once adhered to.

I would suggest that Ellison is commenting on the power of religious tradition -- despite the far future setting and alien adherents, many of the Jewish traditions have remained intact. The story is filled with fun observations on tradition and religion, unusual rituals, and strange societies but is not for the fainthearted -- many of the key Jewish concepts are conveyed via Yiddish phrases and Ellison's accompanying index is necessary to understand what is happening.

"Silent in Gehenna" (1971) 4.5/5 (Very Good): Joe Bob Hickney is the last voice against the militarization of society: "You call this academic freedom, you bunch of earthworms! You call electrified fences and armed guards in your classrooms the path to learning?" (76). He's the last rebel. Everyone else has succumbed. Joe demonstrates on a University campus but no one listens. Soon he is kidnapped and awakes far from the University -- those who tends his wounds are other outcasts but utterly apathetic to the problems of the world. The apathy of everyone around him is devastating...

"Erotophobia" (1971) 3/5 (Average): An incredibly comic story in which Ellison ridicules one of the most prevalent cliches of the SF and F genre -- the irresistible male hero whom all the young women run after... If Nate Kleisher ventures outside of his home he will literally be "loved to death." Everyone, male or female, finds him attractive and go to great extremes to get at him. Afraid for his life Nate seeks out a renowned German shrink.... A fun satirical tale with a bizarre conclusion.

"One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty" (1970) 4/5 (Good): A profoundly moving story of Gus Rosenthal -- a foil for Ellison -- who travels back in time and befriends his younger self. His younger self was ridiculed for being a Jew and ran away from home at a young age. Filled with autobiographical tidbits from Ellison's own life, the work is filled with interwoven strands of nostalgia and longing to improve one's own past.

"Ecowareness" (1974) 3/5 (Average): "Now isn't that a nice story. And [f***] you, too" (124). Ellison's snarky "story" isn't really a "story" but a swipe at his audience and the American public in general. In short we are screwing the planet and not doing anything about it.... A "fairy tale" about Earth and how many people it had to kill before people realized the damage they had wrecked.

"Catman" (1974) 4.25/5 (Good): The first half of the story is brilliant. The second half loses some of the power and momentum, and the ending is all too abrupt. The son is a thief who transports himself across the vast arcology of London stealing drugs. The father is a policeman, called the Catman, who hunts his son across the vast construct (with its waterfalls, oceans, gardens, habitation levels) with his mechanical animals -- but only within his shift hours. And then there's a society of half-men who live below ground who have sex with a large machine which seems to slowly consume their bodies and intelligence... And an unusual mother character who desperately wants her husband to catch the son so he gets his promotion....

"Catman" is a baffling yet transfixing experience. The images of a son being chased by his father -- and an assortment of mechanical animals - across a vast future city is one of most memorable sequences of the collection. I'd love to hear your interpretations!

"Hindsight: 480 Seconds" (1973) 3.75/5 (Good): The only of Ellison's works I'd previously read -- in the collection Future City (1973) ed. Elwood... I enjoyed it more this time so I've increased the rating but kept the gist of the original review: The world's cities have lifted into space, à la Blish's Cities in Flight, due to an approaching planetoid which will crash into Earth. One man is selected, a poet, to stay on the planet (and die) so that he can send his impressions of the destruction of earth (to the flying cities) for all future generations of the displaced. The story is deeply evocative: How would we process the loss of our home world? And of course, our poet is unable to do justice to the event (is it even possible?) and has more personal concerns."

A good later Ellison collection

This is a good collection of mostly 70's-era Ellison stories. Devoted Ellison fanatics will love it. A more critical one, myself, I was impressed but not interested in several of the stories, but Ellison's vehemence and creativity are always on. This one is worthwhile for "Knox," a disturbing tale dealing with race hatred, and the poignant (and classic) "One Life Furnished in Early Poverty."

First-Degree Murder of the English Language!

I must solidly agree with Tracy Mohrhauser-Christain. The typos, page errors, repeated sections, and annoying mistakes serve to make an otherwise excellent and well-written book abysmally hard to read! The errors are such that they totally throw you out of the story, leaving you reeling and thinking, Whatever happened to editors and proofreaders?? And WHY are so many Kindle eBooks like this? Set up poorly and full of horrendous typos and boo-boos and just plain stupid things?

Fact: I adore my Kindle. Sometimes I do miss being able to throw a book across the room, though!
Fact: This is a very good, suspenseful true crime read.
Fact: SOMEONE should have checked the eBook before it went live! I have seen quite a few just plain badly put-together eBooks... but this has to be one of the worst. I did push on and finish it, which is a credit to the authors, because the presentation of it is inexcusably bad.

Interesting Story, Tedious Writing

Judias Buenoanos had many men in her life; most of the are dead.

But her last victim wouldn't die. His survival would prove to be her death sentence.

Surviving a car bombing, John Gentry would tell police about numerous events leading up to his near death experience; events that would point the finger at his live-in girlfriend Judi.

Once police began digging into the life of Judias Buenoanos, the evidence began to mount....evidence of more than the attempted murder of Gentry but in the deaths of her her husband, a past boyfriend, and her first born son.

What kind of person kills those who trust her the most? And why?

Bodies of Evidence: The Shocking True Story of America's Most Chilling Serial Murderess... From Crime Scene to Courtroom to Electric Chair by Chris Anderson and Sharon McGehee seeks to answers those very questions with a detailed recounting of Judias Ann Lou Welty Goodyear (Morris) Buenoano's life and crimes.

Overall, this is an interesting book; an indepth look at the epitome of a black widow.

However, the trial accounts are edious and seem to be direct from trial transcripts - with a few paragraphs of narrative tossed in for good measure.

But not enough to keep me from skimming through over 100 pages of this book.

On a five star rating, I give Bodies of Evidence: The Shocking True Story of America's Most Chilling Serial Murderess... From Crime Scene to Courtroom to Electric Chair three stars. It's okay, but it'll never be considered a "best" of the true crime genre.

Arsenic and an Old Face

As presented by authors Chris Anderson and Sharon McGehee in their true crime saga, BODIES OF EVIDENCE, a remarkably physically unattractive Florida woman named Judias "Judi" Goodyear began her career of poisoning the men in her life with arsenic in 1971. Her initial victim was her husband James, and her windfall from his murder was around $25,000. While there is no indication that Judi particularly disliked her victims, she clearly liked money better. Her next killing was that of Billy Ray Morris, her live in boyfriend, and by this time she was forging her victims'names to insurance policy applications and substantially increasing her payoffs. Goodyear although intelligent, cold, and cunning was also a little goofy and somewhere along the line, for reason that are unclear to me, she changed her three children's and her surnames to Buenoano, the Spanish equivalent of Goodyear.

Money was predictably getting tight as the family was living well from the insurance proceeds and denying themselves nothing, so Judi needed to strike again. This time her victim was her oldest son, 20-year-old Michael, who had always had behavior issues and who was a source of embarrassment to the perfect image Judi liked to present. Unfortunately, he didn't die from the poisoning, which merely rendered him severely disabled, so Judi and her son James had to finish him off by dumping him out of a canoe, his leg braces firmly attached, and drowning him, thereby securing more cash from the splash. Her final intended victim was her boyfriend, John Gentry.
Gentry was smart enough to stop taking the arsenic laden capsules Judi gave him daily as vitamins, and though he was hospitalized, he did not die, which irritated Judi. So she arranged to have Gentry's car dynamited. Miraculously, Gentry lived, which was the beginning of Judi's end. The rest of the book deals, interestingly and without superfluous and boring detail, with Judi's three trials and her eventual sentencing.

Goodyear/Buenano's story is fascinating and the authors move the story along well providing all of the necessary information, while not feeling the need to present every tedious available scrap. For example, in the trial segments, they summarize information when possible. And the research in BOE is outstanding.

While the writing is for the most part pretty good, there were enough substandard instances that I feel some are worth mentioning. First, the authors occasionally use the omniscient style of writing, which I heartily dislike, to bring drama to a story that already has plenty: "Detective Ted Chamberlain clicked his way down the shiny tiled lobby of the intensive care unit..." with "Detective Rick Steele striding briskly slightly behind him." This is no more than fabricated hooshwah. The authors could and should have simply had them walking, or just as well, not mentioned it at all.

As for Chamberlain, who was clearly a main source of information, there is enough hero worship involved to become irritating. The authors try to present him as a hard-bitten, dogged cop who never gives up on a case. While this may all be true, they depict him in such a way that he basically seems crude and ignorant, particularly based on quotes they attribute to him: "'That's mighty white of you, Buddy.'" and "'Look, woman,'" Chamberlain panted. "'There's nothing wrong with you.'" and "'Woman, what are you talking about'?" I don't believe that the authors know that Chamberlain actually said any of this, but while fabricating these quotes, they are presumably trying to give the reader an accurate picture of Chamberlain's personality. And it isn't pretty. "Woman??!!" Who but a clod calls women `Woman'?"

Trial witnesses only infrequently reply or respond to questions. Instead they "retort", "quip", and "rejoin", even when the word used is inappropriate, so that the authors can vary their usage. The fact that "quip", "rejoin", etc., are not synonymous with "reply" or "answer" does not seem to concern them.

Witness Mary Beverly "shuddered as she remembered Bobby Joe's easy good natured grin." Ridiculous. Did they interview her later and ask the witness why she had shuddered, if she in fact done so at all? Maybe she was cold.

And finally, in what may well be considered the climax of this ludicrous style of writing: "God save your soul", Johnston ejaculated. Several involuntary mental scenarios, none of them pleasant, resulted from my having read this sentence.

BODIES OF EVIDENCE is a fast paced, well-researched read with a plot line that is consistently interesting. The poor writing occurs often enough to be worthy of mention and for me to deduct one star in my rating, but it is not pervasive enough, especially when Anderson and McGehee are presenting the results of their extensive research, to ruin a book I found over all quite enjoyable. I believe that true crime devotees will like this book.

For those who love...

In this collection of poetry, vignettes, Bible verses, legends, and classical literary quotes, the editors delve into the nature of the finest human emotion, that of love. All forms of it are examined, young love and old, love lost and love that is never lost, love between Man and God, love in families, romance, love of nature, etc. Even though many of the stories will be familiar, seen in this new presentation, they take upon added depth and meaning. Readers will come away knowing that love is both the most simple thing in the world, and at the same moment, the most complex.

I have really enjoyed this book. I first received the hardback copy as a gift, and liked it enough to buy the Kindle edition. Father Greeley was one of my favourite authors, and he has put together a wonderful collection.

Realistic view of Marine Boot Training

To research this book, novelist da Cruz, himself an ex-Marine, spent three months with the recruits of Platoon 1036 at Parris Island, S.C. He shows the eased training standards at Marine boot camp and quotes many enlistees who think the regimen is not nearly tough enough. Drill instructors, for example, may not use profanity at trainees, nor touch them; the process of converting trainees into Leathernecks involves much physical instruction, close-order drill, exercises in marksmanship and simulated combat. The aim is to instill a sense of self-respect and confidence and, more importantly, esprit de corps. There is a chapter on female Marines, whose attrition rate is exceedingly high. Da Cruz's argument that training has become "too easy" is off-putting, as is his glorification of the Marine as "a different breed." Military Book Club main selection.

This is one of the few recent books available to the general public that describe U.S. Marine Corps boot (basic combat) training, covering it from day one through graduation. The approach is journalistic, with clear writing that is often repetitious. The author compares selected activities and issues with his own 40-year-old experiences in an attempt to show that the training is not as tough as it once was, or should be. This thesis, however, is beside the point, since the approach to training has changed over the years, as have personnel needs. Boot training is not designed to make a complete Marine; it merely provides the basis for further training in individual units. This book is not as relevant as it once perhaps was...

Having attended Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (MCRDPI) from May 02 to Aug 02 and graduating with Platoon 3058, 3rd RTBn, I picked up this book a week or so ago to relive some of the memories from boot camp. However, instead of getting a detailed report of what the recruits went through, the author spends more time complaining about how the Drill Instructors can't be as tough as they once could. Instead of feeling a sense of pride and esprit de corps from reading this book, I'm left with a sense of disappointment, stemming mainly from the fact that many of the policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that the author complains so vehemently about are not strictly enforced anymore.
As a background, one must understand that this book was written in 1987. A recruit died during training in 1985 (from a pre-existing physical condition that he [didn't mention] on his enlistment contract, ...and congress decided that it was time to really bare down on Marine Corps recruit training and make it a little more "humane." As a result, they did impose a lot of policies and SOPs that hindered the Drill Instructors' abilities to discipline recruits. Like I said, though, many of these policies aren't strictly enforced anymore.
A harmless example that I'll divulge is the policy of Drill Instructors cursing. In the book, Da Cruz spends much time mulling over the ludicrousness of forbidding Drill Instructors to curse at or in front of recruits. That may have been the case in '87, but I can tell you that today the art of cursing is alive and well on MCRDPI with both the recruits and the Drill Instructors. I think this is perfectly harmless; it toughens up the skin of the recruits, and that's what Marine Corps recruit training is all about: Toughening you up in the event of combat, because the enemy will not follow any "humane" policies or SOPs.
There are several other policies and SOPs that don't hold anymore, but I'm not going to go into them. The point I'm trying to make is this: From reading this book, one might get the impression that Marine Corps recruit training isn't tough anymore. That is not the case. Ask any Marine from my company (or any, for that matter), and they'll tell you it was the hardest thing they've ever lived through. Marine Corps recruit training is still the hardest, toughest indoctrination to the finest fighting force in the world, have no doubts.
Da Cruz also compares Marine Corps recruit training to that of other similar forces from other countries, including the British Royal Marines (to whom the United States Marine Corps holds close ties) and the French Foreign Legion. Da Cruz spends time talking about how Marine Corps recruit training isn't as hard as these others, but the comparison isn't really fair. The Marine Corps plays the role of a major force-in-readiness, ready to storm a beach or be dropped in by helo at the drop of a hat to prepare the way for the rest of the Armed Forces. These foreign forces that Da Cruz talks about play a different role and are probably more comparable to our Special Forces teams, not a regular branch of the service.
In all, I would not recommend this book to someone thinking of becoming a United States Marine. This book is out of date on not only the policies and SOPs, but also on the training schedule. The Crucible is not included in this book simply because it wasn't around in '87. However, if you'd like to relive some of the more memorable moments of boot camp, and get a sneak peek at the lives of the Drill Instructors, then pick this book up.

Unless you believe that the typical Marine Corps recruit, straight out of high school, uses words like "exemplifies," "engender," "transgressor," and "invariably" -- all of which appear on just one page (page 42) of this book, you will soon question whether Daniel da Cruz even exists. It is worth noting that the author acknowledges the contributions of approximately 130 Marines (ranging from a Major General to Corporals, but no Privates, PFCs or Lance Corporals) to his (or their) effort. In style and content, the book is little more than a recruiting pamphlet. It contains some useful factual information, but readers seeking a realistic description and assessment of modern Marine training should look elsewhere -- "Making the Corps" by Thomas E. Ricks provides a far better description and analysis.
"Boot" is the right title for this book, but not for the reason the author(s) intended

The Right Fit

Boot by Daniel Da Cruz probably had pride of place for being one of the best overall books on the Marine Corps, and in particular about training, boot camp and the enlisted ethos, for nearly a decade.

This book, published in 1987, is set in a time before the Crucible and some of the more recent innovations in training that were to take place during the Reagan and elder Bush eras. The Marine Corps was still struggling to redefine its mission and purpose, and having had some major tragedies like the bombing of the barracks in Beirut, public-relations and policy-wise, the Marine Corps was a low ebb in its fortunes. Indeed, there was serious discussion whether or not the Corps should continue to exist.

Da Cruz takes an up-close and personal look at boot camp through the eyes of actual participants. He constructs some composite characters and blends things together to form a tighter narrative, and also gives alias names to some recruits in Platoon 1036, 1985, the group he followed most closely.

In the first pages of the book, Da Cruz disspells some of the myths and misperceptions about who the Marine Corps are looking for. The Marine Corps is highly selective, and disqualifications include lack of education (particularly since not completing high school or a GED shows a lack of trainability), trouble with drugs, law enforcement, various physical disabilities, abnormal height and weight, and a few other things. Dependents are not absolutely disqualifying, but then as now certainly weigh against the potential recruit.

Da Cruz looks at the in-processing and recruitment stages, showing the care and attention the Marine Corps gives to its future in accepting potential recruits. He also looks at the special appeal of the Corps to young men. The Marine Corps didn't offer incentives, it offered challenges. This is true of the Marine Corps up to this day. While other services offer incentives to potential recruits, the first question a Corps recruiter will ask is `What can you offer the Corps?' The answer had better be a good one!

Da Cruz intersperses after every short section a piece of the history of the Corps. After looking at the initial shock treatment phase of receiving, from being screamed off the bus to getting the shaved head to being herded naked through various stations, Da Cruz then gives a brief overview of the history of the Corps, from the earliest days of formation in Tun Tavern in 1775 to the operations in Lebanon and Grenada in the 1980s.

Da Cruz looks with honesty at the emotions going through the minds of the recruits and the Drill Instructors. Most recruits are scared at first. So, in fact, are some Drill Instructors. There are a thousand ways to fail for each of them, and it is only through unrelenting focus that they all make it through. They may well depend on each other for the sake of their lives. This is the real world.

But, in fact, it is a different world. As Da Cruz points out in recounting the story of forming, recruits are introduced to an entirely new culture, one that requires a new language. There are no floors, there are decks. There are walls, there are bulkheads. Stairs are ladders. And woe to the recruit who has to go to the bathroom!

Throughout the rest of the book, organised as a chapter for each of the eleven weeks, Da Cruz highlights one or two particular recruits who either exemplify or struggle with the particular tasks of the week, or overall adjustment. However, the focus still remains on the platoon as a whole, in true Marine Corps fashion. This is a team effort. Following this discussion, Da Cruz looks at an historical or topical issue, but always comes back to the basic issue - the rigours of boot camp.

Da Cruz looks at the tensions between the desire to make boot camp and other training realistic and harsh versus the political and social pressures to keep it, as it is a publicly-known process, somewhat humane. It is clear that Da Cruz blames Congress and public-policy bureaucracy in addition to the proverbial `gold-star mother' who doesn't want to hear of her son being treated poorly.

In fairness, there has been abuse in the past that has gone far beyond even tough military training standards. The Ribbon Creek tragedy which resulted in a serious injury and death toll from training is no laughing matter, nor something that should be forgotten. However, many Drill Instructors and Marines feel the pendulum has swung too far. Some changes in the training have been instituted since the publication of Da Cruz's book, and Drill Instructors are given more to work with in achieving their goal of making Marines.

One can easily see that Da Cruz is himself a veteran of the Marine Corps. He is also one who cares that, during the decade after Vietnam (mid-70s to mid-80s) the Corps seemed to suffer a decline in many areas, one of which was the vital area of training for surviving combat in modern arenas.

Much has changed since Da Cruz wrote this book, but the same stories can be repeated over and over. Some of the recruits Da Cruz followed may indeed still be serving in the Marine Corps. Some might even be Drill Instructors now, preparing the next generation of Marines.

Da Cruz does encapsulate in an excellent way the esprit de corps of the Marine Corps, which is its most valuable asset.

Taken as a snapshot of the Marine Corps, particularly of the Corps during the 80s, this is an excellent book, even if biased in very definite directions that might make civilian readers a bit uneasy.

Though not strikingly original in theme, the nine stories in Lumley's first collection since A Coven of Vampires (1998) are as punchy and direct in their approach to horror as the author's blood-curdling Necroscope novels. Nearly all feature modern people reduced to primitive drives and fears when faced with territorial challenges from weird nemeses. In the title story, an impeccable John Bull type is driven to violence as he finds himself displaced gradually from barroom and bedroom by a grotesque little homunculus with fiendish hypnotic powers. "The Disapproval of Jeremy Cleave" is a black comedy about a husband so possessive of his wife that after death his glass eye and prosthetic leg noisily interrupt her lovemaking with other men. The desperate extremes people resort to when confronted with threats to all they hold dear is particularly noticeable in two Lovecraft pastiches: "Aunt Hester," which tells of a family's struggles to fend off one member's formidable skill at exchanging personalities after her demise, and "The Return of the Deep Ones," in which a marine biologist painfully discovers that he's descended from a semi-aquatic species. Though most of the stories showcase Lumley's familiar blend of O. Henry twists and gruesome shocks, "No Sharks in the Med," an expertly modulated tale of mounting psychological suspense about a newlywed couple's struggle to escape pursuers on a private island, is the book's best selection. Fans in need of a regular Lumley fix will find the tone and temper of these tales satisfyingly consistent with his novels.

This volume contains the title story, the classic visitation-from-beyond yarn "The Return of the Deep Ones" (once published as a short novel in three installments and since lost to view), and seven other tales. Among those the standouts are "Snarker's Son," a Lovecraft-tinged alternate history; "No Sharks in the Med," which Lumley brings vividly to life by setting it in Cyprus; and "The Luststone," a raunchy, raucous condensation of a longer, rather more explicit original. The stories indicate that Lumley's partiality to purple prose goes back a long way, but for most readers, his handling of Lovecraftian themes, his deft use of setting, and his growing skill at characterization will far outweigh the fustian. Lumley Revived.

I used to be a great fan of Brian Lumley's. The early Necroscope novels were chilling and unique. Lumley's Lovecraft derived tales were always great fun. He showed the kind of imagination and control over his writing that often spelled greatness.
Unfortunately, Lumley seemed to get stuck on mining the Necroscope series for all that it's worth, and I simply grew tired of the them. I can only do so much hideous, other dimensional, alien vampire reading. The last few books in the series moved onto my Someday Isle (as in Someday Isle buy them) list. It was in a moment of weakness that I picked up his latest collection of short(er) stories.
What a relief!! Just when I had almost completely given up hope, The Whisperer saved the day. This is the original, strong writing that I found so entrancing years ago. Readers will find much to enjoy as Lumley dips his pen into wells of humor, terror and pure fantasy. This one is right up there with Fruiting Bodies, and The Compleat Crow.
The Whisperer contains Snarker's Son, Aunt Hester, The Whisperer, No sharks in the Med, Vanessa's Voice, The Statement of Henry Worthy, The Disapproval of Jeremy, Cleave, The Luststone, and the complete novel The Return of the Deep Ones. The last is a fine piece of post-Lovecraftian writing that will delight all us addicts. Among the short stories, The Whisperer and No Sharks in the Med are among my favorites.
Now that the Necroscope series is finally drawing to a close, The Whisperer provides a comforting glance into the future of Lumley's writing. We can look forward to many more years of great Lumley thrills!!

Earplugs and Hedgeclippers, Essentials for Urban Survival

Within Brian Lumley's works is a certain something that oftentimes finds me late at night with my chin pressed to a book, a chill lapping the base of my spine, making me look over my shoulder and wonder because of his visions. Here I find my mind running rampant, dancing through gardens of strange delights that, if I'm luck, bring about some delicately crafted nightmares to lovingly caress me within my sleep. Its as if the words he crafts, working from some primal place that a reader can easily understand, can bring about feelings I had long considered dead and gone in my horror-hardened mind. This is something I find myself coveting more and more as the days press into years and time marches on.
In this installment of short stories, there are many notable pieces that include, among other things, a short novel dealing with some of my favorite Lovecraftian amphibians. There are also pieces here that found me laughing as well, picturing the dread of the characters as they learned valuable lessons on "juju" and the high cost of certain crimes, and pieces that make me remember why eating things I find outside is never a good idea.
Breaking some of these down, they are:
Snarker's Son, a tale involving an oddity at the police station and a policeman who is at first skeptical until being privy to a meeting of the "tubers," ending the tale in something bloodily to my liking and always full of teeth.
Aunt Hester, brimming with Lovecraftian themes that also dart in their own morbid direct, deals with a woman that can, for some strange reason, switch bodies with her twin brother if she wants to. She finds it out quite by accident at first, doing things innocently and then out of anger. Well, this doesn't sit too well with him, and she learns, in a not-so-wonderful manner involving a very valuable life lesson, why she shouldn't play in grounds she's been told to leave alone. The ending to this piece is a very good one, taking the main plot and standing it on its proverbial ear a bit, giving the reader something that they can take with them anytime they find themselves in a dark, silent void within the night.
The Whisperer, perhaps one of my favorites in the book, finds a Mr. Miles Benton communing with a small, rancid dwarf on the train, one that happens to interact with him in the most terrible of fashions. This run-in, not a good one in many respects, is only the beginning of a long nightmare, one he thinks himself mad for dreaming. Again and again the dwarf appears, whispering in the ears of people with horrible repercussions for Mr. Benton in the process, ruining his life and his sanity in the process. So, is it a dream, is it a nightmare, is it Lumley selecting a main character to torment horribly before introducing him to the rubbery undertow of demise? Its a question you'll love yourself for answering.
The Statement of Henry Worthy, dealing with the dark side of botany, is about plants of unknown origin that are discovered by a Germanic explorer, Horst Graumer, before he disappears and the horrors that these things actually hide when another botanist decides to go looking for them. Deciding to voyage into a certain area of marshlands, he finds what he's looking for and more, falling into a cavern of perpetual horror in the process, his dreams meshing with a reality that worsens as the days press on. Here is a very Lovecraftian, very entertaining piece, teaching everyone that eating greens, contrary to what your mother may have said, can be a wretched ordeal!!
The Disapproval of Jeremy Cleave, one of the funnier pieces I've seen produced by Lumley, focuses on the fun one can have if he were to suddenly decide to partake in extracurricular activities with his best friend's wife while that best friend, in his grave in the queerest of circumstances, stretches his juju a bit. Of particular merit is the ending to this one, fueled by a delicious melody of horror and suffering, making any fan smile with pride.
The Return of the Deep Ones, a story hitting novel lengths, touches upon those Lovecraftian tides and the dwellers that seem to always haunt them. After getting a conch from a certain Mr. Marsh of Innsmouth, our main character finds a change being thrust upon himself, one that spins and twists through oceans of plot and mini-stories, ultimately allowing him to press against that brick wall that all characters in stories really need to hit. While this is a bit older in the Lumley craft, it is still impressive and worth reading, letting those cute little men with the huge, unblinking eyes creep into your heart and make you yearn for the sea and immortality once more.
Excluded from description here are a few tales, No Sharks in the Med, Vanessa's Voice, and The Luststone, all worth of a synopsis in and of themselves but all finding and unwilling medium to do so at this time.
This, along with its companion piece Beneath the Moors, offers a wide variety of reading that don't really adhere to one way of recollecting the decrepit underbelly of living, making certain to entertain even the sloppiest of horror consumers. It makes me long for a house by the ocean, myself.

Horor at its best

THE WHISPERER AND OTHER VOICES is an anthology consisting of a long novella (or is that a short novel as advertised by Tor?) and eight short stories. Each of the short stories is well written and for the most part pays homage to Lovecraft. They run the gamut from graveyard serious horror to satirical humor. The amusing tales like "The Lustone" show how talented Brian Lumley is as he provides an amusing twist to top his usual works. The title piece is classic horror that hits the reader in the gut. The novella, "The Return of the Deep Ones" is a journey into the deepest reaches of Lovecraftian environs. Fans of the author and those of Lovecraft will relish this devotion to the great writer while realizing how good Mr. Lumley is even outside his popular series.
