About the Author
Caitlin Kittredge is the author of the Nocturne City and Black London series, as well as several short stories. She started writing novels at age 13, and after a few years writing screenplays, comic books and fan-fiction, she wrote Night Life, her debut novel. She is the proud owner of an English degree, two cats, a morbid imagination, a taste for black clothing, punk rock, and comic books. She's lucky enough to write full time and watches far too many trashy horror movies. She lives in Olympia, Washington.

Big improvement wold have been 4 stars

Except for very annoying errors. Luna gets assigned a partner who can be just as bitchy and unpleasant as she is. Very promising. Shelby used to work vice and gets recognized by a guy she busted at an underage club. There are various incidents like that but they add up t a very good plot. Interesting gang war going on. But the plots both major and minor are marred by serious editorial and factual errors. Firefighters wear big bottles of compressed air on their backs (SCBA) not Oxygen. The Tibula and fibula are in the leg not the arm and in some 20+ years as an active EMT and nearly 30 on the ski patrol I have only seen one case of the fibula being broken without the tibia (that's the shin bone that runs from the ankle to the knee the fibula is a little bone behind it) also being broken. The radius and ulna are in the arm and it isn't real uncommon for one to be broken without the other. These annoying and persistent errors keep this from 4 stars. BTW Asmodeus is a demon of lust in the Hebrew mythology and one of the fallen (32 in rank) in the christian. Maybe why Luna is consistently after Dmitri.
Overall a good read except for the errors of fact.

I have no doubt that Caitlin Kittridge is a talented writer and expect great things from her future books. For me, though, there are a few issues that prevent me from giving Pure Blood a higher rating.
First, after the first book (Night Life,) I didn't realize that Luna was so emotionally involved with Dmitri. She'd only known him a few days and they hadn't spent that much time together. So I was surprised by how strong her feelings were for him at the beginning of the second book. The relationship just didn't seem to have been developed to that degree, yet. Still, okay, I can get past this, but, given that Luna was supposedly so attached to Dmitri and that she has suffered from not having a pack, it seems just a bit odd that she didn't allow Dmitri to bite her and make her a member of his.
Second, I never quite understood how Luna was "forcing" her cousin, Sunny, to stay with her. It seemed throughout the first book, until the very end at least, that their decision to be roommates had been mutual. But, now at the beginning of the second book her cousin has been "freed" from her obligation and has happily moved back in with their Grandmother. Huh?
Third, I found it distracting when, at the beginning of Pure Blood, Luna, an experienced homicide detective, doesn't know that petechial hemorrhage is an indication of strangulation or asphyxia. Anyone who's ever watched CSI, read a mystery, etc. knows this and I certainly would have expected a homicide detective to have this knowledge. Minor, I guess, but it still interrupted the fantasy.
Finally, and this is certainly nothing to do with the author and I did not factor it into my rating, the Kindle version is almost impossible to read in many places. Even when all the words do appear the font is difficult to look at for any length of time.

There's a war brewing between caster witches and blood witches in Nocturne City, so it's a good thing that Luna Wilder is back on the force to take care of things. After she is almost killed by a junkie at a crime scene, she heads back to the department to find out there's a new boss in the precinct, Captain Matilda Morgan, who would love nothing more than to kick Luna to the curb. Luna is also paired up with a new bimbo of a partner, Shelby O'Halloran, whose perky attitude is enough to drive Luna right up the wall. Together they must solve the murders that keep piling up, but Luna doesn't want to work with Shelby. She has trust issues, and her mind is preoccupied with Dmitri. Wondering why he took off, and why he hasn't called her back. Last she saw him he had received the bite from a demon, courtesy of Luna's last big case, and is now severely ill.
If Luna doesn't find out who is at the helm of these murders, she may end up dead herself, as well as Shelby and Dmitri.
I found Pure Blood to be much better than the first in the series, Night Life (Nocturne City, Book 1), not that I didn't like Night Life, it just had a few glitches. Luna is pretty hard headed and gutsy, and she has no problem going after the bad guys herself, which I really like about her. She also has no problem being rescued once in awhile. Here we have a heroin e that is vulnerable to death and damage, and getting help out of a jam is necessary sometimes. I enjoyed the war between the different "gangs" of witches, and Luna finding out more about her past as she solves the case. There were some things that I found lacking, mostly in the characters. Sunny was only featured for a bit here and there; after she played such a big role in the first book I was expecting and excited to see more of her. Dmitri and his new woman friend weren't developed enough for me. I find it hard to lust after Dmitri, because I don't know enough about him. Sometimes I don't even understand Luna's attraction.
The pack elders were a good addition to the books, and hopefully there will be more of them in the future. I have a feeling that Luna and Dmitri are going to have a rough go of things in the next book to come. Even Shelby is likeable after her walls are broken down and you get to the heart of her.
Overall I enjoyed Pure Blood. I like seeing the story unfold through Luna's eyes, and I like creepy Nocturne City. I'm looking forward to reading Second Skin (Nocturne City, Book 3) when it comes out in March 09.
