Spiced To Death: A Culinary Mystery (Culinary Mysteries), by Peter King

The Gourmet Detective: He's got a gift for food, a taste for adventure-and a nose for nabbing a killer.

Critics hailed Peter King's debut novel, The Gourmet Detective, the first in a delicious mystery series featuring the Gourmet Detective-a chef-turned-culinary-sleuth.

Now, in his second outing, the Gourmet Detective is on his way from London to New York to authenticate Ko-Feng-an expensive spice, lost for centuries, and lauded for its taste and purported qualities as an aphrodisiac. But when the Ko-Feng disappears under his nose-and a culinary colleague turns up dead-the Gourmet Detective becomes the prime suspect in a case more slippery than Oysters Rockefeller. As he cooks up a scheme to find the killer, the Gourmet Detective embarks on a mouth-watering romp through the ethnic eateries of New York City, tasting his way to final justice.

From Library Journal
Though known only as the Gourmet Detective (The Gourmet Detective, St. Martin's, 1996), this otherwise unnamed English sleuth mainly searches for rare food ingredients. Summoned by a friend to New York, he authenticates a secretive shipment of Ko Feng, a newly rediscovered spice supposedly unknown for 500 years. Someone steals the Ko Feng, however, and kills the friend. The police?in the form of a most attractive Italian female sergeant?request the Gourmet Detective's assistance, which he renders with charming aplomb. A convenient international food fair and several more beautiful women spur him on. Recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
The Gourmet Detective's second adventure (The Gourmet Detective, 1996) brings the eponymous muncher/sipper/snooper to New York Harbor from London to identify a shipment of Ko Feng, a spice believed extinct for the past 500 years. When the Ko Feng disappears and the American friend/employer of our foodie hero is killed, the latter cheerfully tells the widow to ``keep busy'' as he himself plunges into a round of Big Apple bashes to locate the bad guy who's making a killing on the gourmet black market. Lt. Gaines of Unusual Crimes grumpily permits him fellow-traveler status with the cops (even procuring some King's Balm for his indigestion), and the Detective makes canap‚ contact with several women--among them ``attractive'' Italian-American Sgt. Gabriella Rossini, whose family owns a restaurant, and ``attractive'' Ayesha Rifkin, who caters ancient cuisines. Pity poor, ``attractive'' Gloria Branson, then, who merely investigates insurance fraud. (Or does she?) There are interviews with Turkish and Chinese culinary kingpins, and the reader is also titillated by an illegal sale of deep-discount goods under a devastated Bronx church--a sale to which the whole city seems privy. But the greater appeal here is to shoppers rather than eaters or lovers. Oh, yes, there's another killing. The author tries again to sell satire (without humor) and a thoroughly effete character on the strength of pro forma sexual pretenses and glorified gustatory lusts. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Plotting as Exotically Flavored as a Celestial Spice.
By Linda G. Shelnutt
The added mysteries tethered to and woven through The Celestial Spice (Ko Feng) foundation for this plot were rich and tasty indeed, and gave this novel a heady complexity well beyond a classic mystery, actually beyond a classic culinary.

Whereas most foodie mysteries are bubbly, light cozies, emulating the brightest, ozone-seeking champaign, this one is a simmering milk-chocolate, alchemizing into a dark, heavy ale, dense with hints of molasses; yeasty with hops; rich with nuance, depth, and complexity.

What I felt reading the denouement scenes in SPICED TO DEATH was that Peter King (feels like a pseudonym, but one which fits the flavor of the book) absolutely relished writing this novel, like a kid in a sandbox overflowing with plots, characters, childhood impressions and schemes. After reading the delightfully dramatic heroic leaps through the culminating chapters and scenes, I began to notice the whiffs of this childlike "I did this" ecstasy underlying the well done mystery which stretches beyond that, toeing into the edge of the mystical.

A reference to one of this plot's Eastern Magic characters being reminiscent of the ancient Fu Manchu stories (which Peter obviously relished with non-stop drools) was my strongest clue of this endearingly youthful trait which most authors possess, but some attempt to subdue, in order to act like grown up professionals (succeeding to various degrees).

Thus, Therefore, and Whereas, another compliment I would slip to Peter King's SPICED, beyond my appreciation of the initial and continuous inducements of mouth watering responses driven by delicious prose, is that he doesn't appear to know (thank all the celestial seasonings of heaven) that he's supposed to tame or tone the wild-eyed, little-kid, absolute love of writing fiction, the mad creative soul clacking away at a keyboard, with hairs flying (or standing on end) and chuckles emerging around red-faced chagrin, exposing all face and body reflections of what each character is feeling as words tumble and toss from muse to mind to keys.

Peter can say, "I did this," with thumbs in vest and a voice filled with the gleeful pride of the very young.

I can say, "I felt that," with the appreciation of an author/reader who revels in untamed, untarnished, untethered, pure spirit, be it flowing from me or from the radiance of another.

The Gourmet Detective, as I continued to reach for and long to know his name, is an unusual blend of character components.

First, he's a native of London, visiting and observing New York from a British connoisseur's viewpoint, seamlessly blending sensitive satire on TV offerings, with barely reserved rapture at the extensive cultural availability of taste bud uptake inhibitors in the Big Apple, or The Big Bagel, as the case in time may be.

Second, he's not hard boiled, nor is he a true detective, nor is he macho or forcefully, tanging-ly male. He almost comes across (in a delightful pose, to me) like a gorgeous, gregarious gay guy attempting, though not trying too hard, more like playing with it, to portray a macho, bravo, heroic collection of juicy testosterone. I loved the way his bravado flickered from fade to flash to fade, and especially the way he seemed comfortable with his variety of subtle mood shifts.

Of course, The Gourmet Detective has as developed of a connoisseur's taste for the varieties of female allures as he does for all things culinary (prepared for working with teeth and tongue). He's sensual, but not overly so; male, but oh so subtly so. He's a good sleuth, yet he doesn't have that "try too hard" feel that some have, with their variety of methods (explained in great detail and with smug self-satisfaction) of collecting and analyzing clues. The Gourmet's detecting flows so smoothly, it doesn't seem to follow any put-together technique or M.O. His "method" of discovery is so natural it appears to be more a Right Brain dance-through-the-luxurious-dark, than a Left Brain show-of-Sherlock.

I've been reading culinaries for years, seeking the ones with the strongest, most frequent taste bud stimulations. Yes, absolutely, I've enjoy immensely all the series I've read and reviewed, imbibing with heady satisfaction what each develops as its own unique flavor, sometimes through ingenious and satisfying means other than food preparation or imbibing, and that is a good thing. Still, the only other culinary series I've found so far with as many yummy yet sophisticated, mouth watering passages as SPICED TO DEATH, is Phyllis Richman's Chas Wheately series, the latest of which is WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA HAM (see my spotlighted review). Also, I should note that RED HOT MURDER by Joanne Pence (see my raving epistle review of this 13th offering in Pence's Angie Amalfi series) has come up to a level of tasty gourmet shenanigans which stand right up to Phyllis Richman and Peter King.

From the beginning to the end of this novel, Peter offers a variety of intense gourmet delights, genuinely of the tongue tanging type. I learned more about spices here, in a more natural, memory retention way, than I have through immersions in many nonfiction tomes on the subject. I read more names (and luscious descriptions) of exotic dishes here than I'll ever be able to remember, and certainly more than I'll be able to spell correctly without this novel at hand.

I have only one complaint about this book.

In the concluding statement (which is exquisite in its own right), three dots follow the words, "I tasted" and precede te words, "our eyes met."

The problem there for me is that within the space of those three dots, Peter King cheated me of the most prime location to break through, "I took a bite of bread." He stopped short of entering the sacred realm of:

"Teeth sliced through the warm, moist bounce of a steaming, spongy slice of homemade heaven. Tongue maneuvered, saliva surged, and the flavor of yeasty tang began ..."

The above sentence shows where three dots have earned their space. Please, PUHLEESE, please, Peter, TELL me HOW it tastes!!! We're speaking about an entre laced with Ko Feng, for heaven's sake!

Okay, okay, editors exist to make certain authors don't go too far into the realms of personal obsessions which might not be shared by the majority of readers. But, but, but ... Aren't culinary cozies DA PLACE for telling what food TASTES like when rolled on the tongue????

Sigh. I shouldn't have brought up this point here, in a review of the novel which comes closest of all to answering this craving perfectly. Those final three dots, though, ...

Surely, Peter King KNOWS that great and gutsy food is more sensual than sex?

That's not to downplay the major acrobatic activity of the animal kingdom. Not at all. Not. At. All. But. We HAVE (and have long had) a plethora of steamy novels, toying with foreplay all through the plot, don't we?

Enough may not be enough in some cases, but in my rambling in this review, this is it.

Let me draw the line:

Rather than a culinary using wine as the thematic draw, SPICED TO DEATH can legally be touted as BEING a fine Pinot Noir just beginning to peak in its best season, year, and batch. Catch it now, and pray that Peter is allowed to continue writing many more Gourmet Detective episodes into the marketplace of books.

Hands Folded, Eyes Bright with Spirit Glow (tongue in a cheek, anticipating more flavors to come),

Linda G. Shelnutt

P.S. If ya wanna keep reading ya gotta look at the good sides of books, or ya'll be singing, "Where have all the authors gone ... lo-o-o-ng time pa-as-sing ..."

Spicy Intrigue at its best
By Amazon Customer
Loved this book. Felt as if I were in Casablanca looking for the letters of transit, while in the book we're running around New York looking for an extinct spice supposedly recently found, but also recently stolen. Loved all the characters and the food descriptions are wonderful. This book is really enjoyable for everyone who likes to eat. As a tee-totaling vegetarian, I would never eat or drink muchh of anything described, but it all sounds so fascinating. I plan to read this book and the Gourmet Detective a 2nd time, just for the ambience. Normally I don't care for British detectives (except for Morse and Dagliegh< sorry about the spelling) but this book takes place in America and even if it didn't (as the Gourmet Detective) it is wonderful. The only unbelievable part of the book is the authentication of the extinct spice. How could it possibly be certified as Ko Feng which no one has seen in 500 years? It seems to me that all the experts could say is that this spice is something completely new or unknown and may be Ko Feng. Anyway, this is an excellent book and makes for great reading.

Didn't Meet Expectations
By WritingAmyB
I was so excited about this book, but it was a let down. I wanted to read Myra's story, but the book is not written in first person. So - for this book to have her name as the primary author is a little misleading. Obviously, the person who collaborated with her did a lot of work. It's written in this awkward third person perspective...UGGH!!! It's so hard to read. I was screaming in my head, "But - what was Myra thinking?! I want to hear from her." It feels like something is held back in the book. And - they made the mistake of putting lots of movie photos in the book...maybe as a ploy to get people to see the film. I don't care about the movie. I wanted the real story and more real photos of Jerry and Myra. Also, hardly a mention of daughter, Phoebe....who is now Jerry's manager, from what I understand. Anyway - Myra is obviously a woman with a story and I am just sad that it was not told better. The book includes lots of details about Jerry's early career that a music historian might appreciate.

It's worth it if you are a serious fan of Jerry and very interested in his marriage to Myra - I learned a lot - I just think it could have been done so much better - so go into it with realistic expectations.

WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON...
By lawyeraau
Entertaining biography of rock and roller Jerry Lee Lewis. It details his rise from the poverty of rural Louisiana to become a rock and roll legend. Told by his wife of thirteen years, Myra Lewis, the book recounts an insider's view of those early days of rock and roll and of the rise of Jerry Lee Lewis in the annals of rock and roll.
Jerry grew up with his first cousin, Jimmy Lee Swaggart, who in his own right achieved a measure of notoriety as a prominent preacher and televangelist. Lewis, however, a music lover from early childhood, wanted nothing more than to be a piano playing musician. A backwoods good ole boy, he shocked the country with his antics, topping it all off with his marriage to his thirteen year old cousin, Myra, an act which brought him unwelcome notoriety.
Known for his high energy performances, Jerry Lee Lewis lived hard, played hard, and worked hard at his music. His was a life of which legends are made. This book is an enjoyable, no holds barred narrative of that life.

Nutrition therapists Tribole and Resch suggest that the best way for dieters to finally make peace with food and body image is to emulate the natural, intuitive eating habits of very young children. The advice culled from this trip down memory lane is both sound and supportive. Key suggestions include rejecting a diet mentality (often based on deprivation and denial); eating only when hungry; stopping when full; and learning to separate emotional from physical needs. No menus or food plans to follow here; the authors encourage readers to eat anything they want, as long as they pay attention to the tenets of feeling true hunger and true satisfaction. Ultimately, the authors insist, old habits subside and body and mind work together to achieve the "natural healthy weight." Basic nutrition concerns are addressed late in the volume, presumably after readers have begun to accept this seemingly unorthodox approach. This nurturing volume will find an eager audience in all those who are tired of living in the land of forbidden foods and the latest greatest diet fad.

Trust yourself and life will follow...
By loopy
This year I decided to get "healthy". I wanted to implement an exercise program and establish good habits in my early 20s so that they would be with me all my life. I never planned on dieting-it just happened. I didn't even know I was on a diet (or 20!) Dieting is EVERYWHERE. We are a nation obsessed and somewhere along the way we forgot what food is about. I became obsessed with food. I tried Eat Right For Your Type, The Goddess Diet, Slim Fast, Vegetarianism, food combining, I did a juice fast...At first it seemed like a healthy hobby. Then out of no where the binge eating began! And the GUILT. I have never been heavy, but I was utterly brainwashed into having a "fat" mind! This book is completely changing my life. I am no longer concerned about when I will be able to eat next and what I will eat-AS I am eating something else! I no longer binge eat. I actually enjoy being hungry as I know my next meal will taste better-and I allow myself to eat whatever I want (without guilt. And I usually really do Want healthy food, too!). I experience satisfaction with the eating experience. My energy level is MUCH better now that I do not see grains as the enemy. I am not piling protein in my body that I do not need or even want. I eat slowly now, knowing that I can eat whatever I want, whenever I want. I NO LONGER FEEL THE NEED TO CLEAN MY PLATE! But most importantly, I accept myself and TRUST myself! This paradigmn shift has spilled over in other facets of my life as well. I cannot praise this book enough. It accomplishes all this and has a non diet mentality throughout. I do not feel the need to read or recommend another diet (or anti-diet) book along with this-it was good enough for me and has ended my obsession with food. I am so GRatEFUL this book was written-I would be probably "living" a half life if it wasn't...

Great, but a few contradictions
By kyara
This book has a lot of great information and advice to help dieters cross back over the fence to adopt a more healthy attitude to food, eating and weight. Unfortunately, it also has a lot of contradictions which a sensible editor should have sorted out. The book sets out 10 principles of why dieters will forever be losing the weight loss battle and explains how to relearn to listen, feel and feed our body's natural hunger. This aspect of the book is great, and there are lots of scientific references to back them up. However, while on the one hand telling you to trust your body to select the healthy food it needs, the authors spoil it all in the last chapter (principle 10) by then prescribing a healthy low-fat diet plan. This seems totally out of place on a book purporting to teach you to eat intuitively. As some other reviewers have said, dieters don't need another "plan" to follow. Instead they need to learn how to survive without the prop of plans that forever fail them. It seems the authors are themselves stuck in their category of "careful eaters" and can't let go. But this is just criticism of a small part of the book. I would recommend "The Seven Secrets of Slim People" by Vikki Hansen and Shawn Goodman in addition to this book to reinforce the good parts.

One of the most important books I've ever read!
By A Customer
I didn't buy this book because I wanted to lose weight. I am an athlete who is at an ideal weight, but I was so strict with my eating that I had become obsessed with food. Daily weighing along with counting calories, protien, and carbs consumed a good portion of my days. The need to eat so perfectly inevitably led to uncontrollable binges about once a week. I bought this book because I wanted to lead a more normal life, where food didn't consume my thoughts and define the success or failure of a day. The principles in the book are completely logical and the authors are good to back up their theories with plenty of empirical data. They clearly lay out why it is so crucial to abandon the diet mentality in order to stabilize or lose weight. I now know that no food is off limits anymore and I am becoming more in tune to what my body is telling me it needs. No more binging, weighing or number crunching. Freedom at last!

White As Snow (Fairy Tales), by Tanith Lee

Once upon a time there was a mirror. . . .

So begins this dark, unusual retelling of the story of Snow White by the writer reviewers have called "the Angela Carter of the fantasy field"―a whole novel based on a beloved story, turning it into a dark and sensual drama full of myth and magic.

Arpazia is the aging queen who paces the halls of a warlord's palace. Cold as winter, she has only one passion―for the mysterious hunter who courts the outlawed old gods of the woodland. Coira is the princess raised in the shadow of her mother's hatred. Avoided by both her parents and half forgotten by her father's court, she grows into womanhood alone . . . until the mirror speaks, and blood is spilled, and the forest claims her.

The tragic myth of the goddess Demeter and her daughter, Persephone, stolen by the king of the underworld, is woven together with the tale of Snow White to create a powerful story of mothers and daughters and the blood that binds them together, for good or ill. Black queen. White maid. Royal huntsman. Seven little folk who live in the forest. Come inside, sit by the fire, and listen to this fairy tale as you've never heard it told before.

Once upon a time there was a mirror, and a girl as white as snow. . . .

Amazon.com Review
After a hiatus of some years, the Fairy Tale series of novels by various authors, edited by Terri Windling, has made a welcome return. The first post-hiatus book is fantasist extraordinaire Tanith Lee's White as Snow, a retelling of Snow White darkly intertwined with the myth of Demeter and Persephone. If you're familiar with both Lee, winner of the August Derleth Award and several World Fantasy Awards, and Windling, also winner of several World Fantasy Awards, and the premier fantasy editor of modern times, then you would expect White as Snow to be a terrific novel. And you would be right.

In an alternate-history medieval Europe, the noble maiden Arpazia, raised in an isolated castle, finds herself the captive of the conquering general-king Draco. The only remnant of her former life is an exotic glass mirror possessed of witchy powers. She feels no connection to Coira, daughter of her forced marriage to the brutal Draco. She becomes the lover of a woodsman, Klytemno, who embodies the divine Hunter King in pagan rituals. Then Klytemno requires her to send her black-haired, snow-pale daughter Coira into the woods as a sacrifice.... --Cynthia Ward

From Publishers Weekly
Horror and fantasy veteran Lee, author of such adult fairy tale collections as Red as Blood and Forests of the Night, offers an enticingly dark and seductive reworking of "Snow White" that echoes the macabre ambience of the Brothers Grimm. Drawing on the sex and violence implicit in the original fairy tale, Lee gives a modern, introspective angle to the classic story. The evil queen, Arpazia, first appears as an innocent princess of 14, who is terrified when Draco, a rising new leader, conquers her father's castle and rapes her. Soon after he has her sister, Lilca, hanged because Lilca betrayed the castle. Draco forces Arpazia to travel with him and his barbaric army. She later bears him a girl, Candacis, whom she immediately shuns as an incarnation of evil, mumbling death spells as the infant tries to suckle her. Lee casts the evil queen in a sympathetic light, depicting her as a tortured soul who in later years begins to question her dark fate. With its melancholy shading, Lee's new twist on an old tale is sure to engage fans of dark fantasy. (Dec. 7)

Dark, Adult Recontextualization Of Snow White
By Elyon
The newest entry in Terri Windling's "Fairy Tale Series," this loose adaptation and borrowing from the "Snow White" folk tale is Lee's third visit to this story for material, her earlier retellings being the short stories "Red as Blood" and "Snow-Drop." Here the outline of the original story is largely removed, presented loosely and at a distance, elements such as the seven dwarves, the mirror and the murderous jealousy of Snow White's stepmother recontextualized to address darker and more modern themes, as well as explore the psychological aspects present in traditional mythology.
In many ways this is a story that explores and reveals the damage caused by sexual and emotional abuse, both of women and of children, the psychology of victimization which, as another reviewer has stated, causes the main protagonists to exist in an uneasy narrative world of indifference and self deprecation. At times it is difficult for the reader to truly relate emotionally with Lee's characters, but I suspect this is in part the author's intention, to force the reader into the deadening psychological and emotional world of victimization caused by rape and emotional child abuse. While there is an overall and depressing tone of hopelessness and lack of empowerment throughout the narrative, the book's conclusion ends on a note of redemption, despite the ugliness and depravity attending its circumstance. This is not, however, a novel for the emotionally or spiritually weak of heart, and I imagine that the traditional reader of fantasy will not find this tale to their taste, offering a story that is slight of action and is neither obvious in its moral or thematic aspects---any heroic elements are hidden from easy and casual observation.
It will prove helpful to the reader for if they are familiar with the traditional and often disguised themes of folklore (in part here they will be helped here by the marvelous introduction offered by Terri Windling), as well as the symbolisms inherent in the Demeter/Persephone cycle of mythology, the triple aspects of the goddess discussed in Robert Grave's "The White Goddess," and the ritual of the king of the wood found in Frazier's "The Golden Bough," as well as Joseph Campbell's "The Masks of God," among other sources. Also, they will need some acquaintance with the Seven Deadly Sins, here associated with the seven dwarves. While I suppose the story can be read without a clear knowledge of these references, it is doubtful one will be able to fully appreciate or comprehend the author's intention without at least some knowledge of Lee's metaphoric and symbolic use of these story elements.
This is a tale largely bound to its use of metaphor and symbolism, requiring some mental exercise, and as such maintains a certain intellectual distance from its evolving storyline. Because of this, the narrative and story elements, combined with the author's choice of characters, remained to a degree emotionally aloof for me, never completely engaging. In terms of adult retellings or modern inventions of the traditional fairy tale, I much prefer the work of Patricia McKillip, where the narrative is not so subsumed by intellectual contextualization. Nonetheless, this is a well-written and thoughtful work, which will appeal to those who enjoy gleaning their reading through metaphoric staging.

Horror, not fantasy
By SG
Having loved the previous novels in the fairy tale series, I had great hopes for this novel. I thought that using the Demeter/Persephone myth was a great idea. Unfortunately, the characters were seemed to be empty caricatures and the story much more horror than fantasy - I wish editors would stop linking the two genres.

Cain's latest thriller returns to familiar territory as she revisits her Heartsick characters, Portland, Ore., detective Archie Sheridan and menacing serial killer Gretchen Lowell. This time Lowell escapes prison and is up to her old murderous tricks, and the only one who can catch her is, of course, Sheridan. As stereotypical as the story sounds, narrator Carolyn McCormick gives the tale heft with her first-rate performance and holds listeners rapt attention throughout. She delves into each and every character, offering realistic interpretations and strong readings that display her commanding stage presence. As strong as McCormick's female characters are, it is her role as Sheridan that sets her apart from many of today's female narrators. A St. Martin's Press hardcover (Reviews, July 17).(Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* It was apparent at the end of Cain’s masterful Heartsick (2007) that we hadn’t heard the last from either Gretchen Lowell, the most mesmerizing serial killer since a fellow named Hannibal, or Archie Sheridan, the Portland cop whom Gretchen tortured and then freed, locking the two of them into a creepy symbiotic relationship somewhere between Romeo and Juliet and Holmes and Moriarity. Cain picks up the story with Sheridan trying to overcome his addictions to pain pills and Gretchen, respectively, and not doing very well with either. A new case—bodies found in a Portland park, near where Gretchen’s first victim was discovered—provides distraction as well as bringing punky, turquoise-haired reporter Susan Ward back into his life, but neither is enough to get Gretchen out of his mind. Then she escapes from prison, determined to draw Archie away from his family, away from his job, and into her arms for a deadly pas de deux. There is a little less gut-wrenching tension this time than there was in Heartsick—and less gut-wrenching gore, too—but there is considerably more psychological complexity, as the knot binding Archie to Gretchen tightens further. The psychosexual interplay between the two is endlessly fascinating and, amazingly, thoroughly believable. In addition, Cain gives more space to her supporting cast—especially reporter Ward, who seems ready for a starring role herself. It’s hard to say how long Cain can play out this lovers’ duel between Archie and Gretchen before they tumble into their own Reichenbach Falls, but it’s a sure thing we won’t be leaving our seats before the final curtain. --Bill Ott

A Heart Day's Night
By enubrius
"Sweetheart" is the sequel to last year's "Heartsick" both featuring hapless (and spleenless... don't ask)detective Archie Sheridan and America's sexiest serial killer Gretchen Lowell. Taken together they form a rather complex tale of masochism, sadism, disgusting behavior, horrific, even nauseating, perversion, and grue and gore. Needless to say, I loved every sick moment of it! To note, as the publisher does, that Gretchen is a sort of female Hannibal Lecter, is to oversimplify to the point of ridiculousness. She is her own stunning creation and more than a match for Thomas Harris' cannibal. Add to that the fact that "Sweetheart" is in and of itself, a pretty darn good whodunnit, and you've got a winner. One thing though: while some series/sequels are stand-alone enough to be read on their own, "Sweetheart" loses FAR too much if you don't read "Heartsick" first. Not to worry, though, you'll love it!

High hopes and rave reviews...but...
By Angry Rooster
Following hot on the heels of the bestselling HEARTSICK, Chelsea Cain continues the story of Gretchen Lowell and Archie Sheridan in SWEETHEART. The second installment is really a continuation of the first as opposed to a full-blown sequel. The narrative picks up about two months after the conclusion of the first book. Sheridan is now back at home with his wife. He is no longer visiting Lowell in prison, though he obsesses about her and half-heartedly battles his downward spiral of prescription drug cocktails and dark fantasies.

Another body and unresolved cases brings many of the characters from HEARTSICK back. The rapid-fire pace of narrative that attracted me to the first novel isn't apparent in the follow-up. Perhaps its because Ms Cain has had time walk around in her characters' skins a little more or perhaps the reduction in pressure of "having to get it right", now that she has a bestseller, has allowed her to relax. Marginal players from HEARTSICK are fleshed out including Sheridan's long-suffering and guilt-ridden partner and his wife.

Lowell is too devious in SWEETHEART. She moves from the very clever to the unfathomably brilliant, able to predict the actions of police agencies and individuals alike as she contrives to end up in the prison hospital (where she will only tell Sheridan who attacked her), followed up a transfer across state, where she is conveniently under-guarded and manages to escape.

What follows is, unfortunately, a long litany of cliches and "just-in-time" arrivals. Sheridan and family, as well as Sue Ward, the reporter from the first story are all placed into protective custody but Lowell manages to track Sheridan down and he is more than willing to give himself to her, quite literally. There is a breathless stacking up of twists and turns and surprises that are heaped upon each other until we're exhausted.

As with HEARTSICK, there are multiple threads at work in SWEETHEART. Ward is still working on the Molly Palmer case. Gone is the gritty "in your face" attitude, though she still has colored hair (turquoise this time). Ward now becomes "super-sleuth", part reporter, part detective and able to access cases and people at a level that is beyond belief. There is a hint of the attraction to Sheridan which I'm sure will be acted on if there are future volumes in this series.

There is the inevitable hookup between Lowell and Sheridan. It's not a torture-fest, now it's a love story. The transition from torturer/victim to more-or-less equals is never properly explained. In HEARTSICK there was some sympathy for Sheridan. By the end of SWEETHEART its gone. No one, no matter how high or screwed up, could be as obsessively dull and undeservedly loved. I actually wanted him to die and he does...a couple of times. He seems impossible to kill.

There are a number of "phew that was lucky" moments; actually too many. A car crash with no one hurt. A half-marathon trek through a smoke-filled forest fire that seems to take just minutes and only results in some inconvenient dirt. An attempt on Ward's life that is thwarted by her mother...just in time...and so it goes.

There's swearing and there's sex. There's blood and gore but it's not shocking. It worked well before but it's old now. The characters are a little more fleshed out but there's little new and little more to care about. At least Ms Cain has tied up most of the loose ends. She's left the possibility of more "Lowell" sequels or, heaven forbid, prequels.

I was really looking forward to reading SWEETHEART. I wanted to know more and I came away feeling a little let-down. Perhaps it's the nature of sequels. I finished this one out of sense of duty.

If SWEETHEART becomes a bestseller it will have to be one that rides the coattails of HEARTSICK. It doesn't have (or shouldn't have) the strength to do it on its own. I've read some of the quotes from publications such as the New York Times and Entertainment Weekly and I cannot make the connection that they have and do not see it as "outdoing" herself. It's not a worthy follow-up.

I hope Ms Cain leaves Lowell and company where it is now and moves on. We know enough about this cast and anything else is overkill. Ms Cain is a talented writer. Let's see what else she can come up with.

Meh.
By Seven Kitties
Second novels in a series are notoriously hard to write: the honeymoon period of just getting to know the characters is over, and look for more depth and roundness, while still demanding more of the 'good stuff' from the first novel.

If you loved _Heartsick_, you'll probably like this one. Like, not love, though. She's toned down the gruesome and replaced it with monumentally needless graphic sex and a metric ton of f-bombs. Even the exposition uses the naughty word. It makes her seem to be trying just a bit too hard to be gritty, rather like her character Susan who thinks she's edgy but is constantly out-edgied by her mother. And once again, you'll be treated to unnecessary descriptions of what EVERYONE is wearing. Seriously--why do I need to know that a morgue tech who doesn't even get a name or a line of dialogue is wearing corduroys? Or my personal favorite: "'There's a press conference at six,' Ian said. He was wearing jeans and a t-shirt he'd bought at the MOMA gift store. 'You want it?'" 'Scuse me, but I'm not sure why I need to know Ian's sartorial choices at this particular juncture? Relevant to plot? No. Relevant to mood? No. Relevant to character building? Nope, we already know Ian pretty well. His clothes haven't changed from his carefully overdescribed wardrobe in _Heartsick_.

Because, oh yes, everyone's back. Remember that Molly Palmer story Susan was trying to promote in novel one? It's back, and apparently a key to a really rather trite and played out conspiracy-of-dunces scandal. And once again, the fresh dead bodies seem to take second stage to the older dead bodies, victims of Gretchen. Susan's less annoying this time, but Archie goes from a sympathetic character to a whingeing sad-sack. Take that as a double-entendre if you wish.

Gretchen is unrealistically prescient--maybe she's secretly psychic. I won't blow the plot, but please do google naloxone and vicodin before you read the climax, and you'll figure out that All is Not Right in Sciencetown. Moreover, what an *odd* thing to pack in a handbag. I'll have to remember that for my next romantic getaway.

What no one seems to remark about this series is how bloody sexist it is. Gretchen, great spooky serial killeress, dangerous yet apparently stunning at, ahem, *pleasing* men. She makes men murder for her. How? Why? By the power of her hot bod. She reminds me of what is called, in fan-fiction (shudder) "Mary Sue." Gretchen is Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS with a bit more (but not much more) medical training. Either that or she's straight out of Freudian Thanatos imagery. All she needs is some teeth down 'thar'.

Some of the physics need to be reworked as well. I suspect that it's unlikely for a woman of Gretchen's delicate build to be able, one-armedly, to haul a man's body backwards across carpet. Does the author even try these things at home? Even these basic ones? (I don't hold the botched splenectomy from book one against her, nor do I expect her to drink Drano in pursuit of literary veritas, but surely she could get a male friend to lie on the carpet and be dead weight?)

The gross is gone, the sadism is gone, the spooky only shows up at the school scene (which is quite good), and I'm sad to say but a good bit of the mysterious tarnish has worn off Gretchen. Like any woman, she just wants to be (sniff sniff) loved. And laid. Archie is trapped, but only because she can't wash that man right outa her blond flowing tresses.

Cain promises us 'more Gretchen to come.' I'm not on the edge of my seat. This book did not grip me, and I like the thriller genre. I came to this book with visions of Jeff Lindsay's Dexter series in mind, or at least Tess Gerritsen. This was okay, but honestly, there's better stuff out there, whatever you want--creepier killers, scary medical stuff, murder conspiracies. My recommendation? Wait for paperback.

A gripping depiction of our darker side
By Douglas A. Greenberg
When I began this novel, I already had an inkling of what the trajectory of the plot would be, based upon the information on the book jacket. It's no secret that the story revolves around what unfolds when three men accidentally stumble upon a plane that has crashed with millions of dollars in cash on board. The bulk of the book explores the grim consequences of this discovery. Despite the generally predictable and even formulaic nature of the plot overall, Smith has done an amazingly skillful job of creating a page-turner of a suspense novel that is nearly impossible to put down. The particulars of just how things go awry for the various principals involved are spun out in ingenious fashion over several hundred extremely well-written pages.
This book not only tells a gripping (and sometimes gory) tale of how a seemingly "simple plan" goes awry, it also provides clear insight into the darker side of the human condition, that is, how under particular circumstances even seemingly "nice, normal people" can end up committing and rationalizing the most heinous deeds, always with "good reasons" behind their actions. The way that Smith lays bare the fragility of human ethics and morals sadly rings true, and renders the book as depressing as it is horrifying and suspenseful. Overall, it's a terrific read that should not be missed.

MONEY IS INDEED THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL...
By lawyeraau
This is, without a doubt, an amazing debut novel. It is a modern day morality tale, which sees people's lives change significantly, when they come upon a veritable treasure trove of money. The change is not necessarily for the better, as the reader will discover.
The plot revolves around two, small town brothers, Hank and Jacob Mitchell, who, along with Jacob's friend, Lou, inadvertently come upon a downed plane that is buried in the snow, deep in the woods of a rural area. In that plane is a dead pilot, along with four million dollars in cold, hard cash. All three of them could sure use the money. The question is, what are they going to do about it?
They come up with what they think is a simple plan. They will take the money and just wait and see, not spending it, until the coast seems clear. From the moment they make this decision, life is never the same for any of them. Hank, taking charge of the money for safekeeping, begins to undergo a change that is seemingly uncharacteristic of one who is outwardly so respectable, rational, and benign of countenance.
As the issue of the money begins to divide the three accomplices, greed and betrayal bubble to the surface, to culminate in a series of chilling, cold blooded murders. Meanwhile, Hank, manipulated by his Ma Barker of a wife, Sarah, begins a personal downward spiral, succumbing to an evil so profound, that it will leave the reader open mouthed.
What happens to them all makes for an amazingly powerful and riveting story of psychological suspense. Written in clean, spare prose, this well crafted novel is a riveting page turner that grips the reader from the inception, holding the reader in its thrall until its climactic conclusion. The ending serves to show the reader that what goes around, does, indeed, come around.

absolutely mesmerizing
By Tim Smith
This book sat in my bookcase for months until I finally decided to read it. What an excellent decision! The story was absolutely mesmerizing with a fantastic plot and very well written. It was tightly constructed with no obvious loose ends. This first novel held my interest as the narrator Hank, an accountant, reveals how he, his older brother Jacob and Jacob's friend Lou accidently discover a crashed plane and over $4 million hidden within its fuselage. From the decision to take the money, Hank reveals the thoughts and emotions, the fear, anxiety and the development of sociopathy with rationalization and self-preservation justifying increasingly violent and irrational behavior. The story has the ability of allowing the reader to think along with Hank and his wife Sarah and compare their decisions to what the reader may have done in similar circumstances that makes this a great exercise in values clarification.
