It Isn't Bad, It Isn't Good

I picked up this wispy-thin hardcover out of the bargain bin at Books-A-Million just because the title sounded unbelievably cheesy. I had no expectations from it. The story started out dumb, then got interesting, then ended up dumb again. In a nutshell: A retired mafia hit man from Detroit marries a sexy young woman. On their honeymoon in LA he is spotted by an old mob boss who forces him back into the business for one more job: Kill a bookie in San Antonio. To insure that the hit man does the job, the mobster sends one of his own pet psychopaths to keep an eye on the pretty young wife. The story jumps between California and Texas from one chapter to the next. Also, something about the hit is not quite right; it could be a setup ... but if you want to find out more, read the book. It won't take you very long to finish.

Only two things stood out for me: Number one, lots of Texas-bashing, which I approve of. Having lived in Texas for about 6 years, I know what kind of lousy place it is. Number two, lots of unnecessary Midwestern vulgarity. Having never read anything by Loren Estelman, or even heard of him, I could tell right away that he was from one of the Great Lakes states. There's a certain reflexive crudity, a gleefully indiscriminate use of degrading slurs and profanity that Midwesterners seem to find endearing, but makes people from other parts of the country think they are either crazy or mildly retarded. Its presence throughout this book was a major turn-off for me.

To sum up, this book is worth reading if you can find it for cheap. It's the kind of thing to read at an airport or train station while waiting for something else to happen. Disposable entertainment, not fine literature. It has a purpose, which it fills adequately, but it's not a "keeper."

exciting crime thriller

In his mid forties, Peter Macklin retired several years ago as a hit man and recently married the much younger Laurie. They are enjoying their honeymoon in Los Angeles when crime boss Carlo Maggiore spots Peter. Though Macklin tried to kill Carlo years ago, business is business so the mobster "hires" Peter to complete a hit that one of his thugs messed up. The fee is fifty large ones plus the safe return of his wife if he kills San Antonio bookie Johns Davis.

Peter hides what he is doing from Laurie, insisting he is going to Sacramento on business. Instead Peter goes to Texas to complete the job. Though out of practice, a hit feels like riding a bike to the retired professional. As Peter works on the details of how he will execute the assignment, Laurie realizes that her "baby-sitter" is no friend of her spouse. She knows that she must depend on herself to remain safe from this goon, while patiently waiting until Peter returns to force the truth from him.

The latest Macklin tale is an exciting crime thriller that showcases the talent of award-winning Loren D. Estleman and demonstrates why the antihero is so popular. The story line is loaded with action whether Peter is the focus or Laurie takes center stage. Though the tale fails to provide Laurie's reactions to Peter's former profession (stay tuned for that in the next novel), fans of the author, especially of Macklin, will appreciate this gratifying thriller.

Hopefully, It Won't Be Another 10 Years Before The Next One!

This book chronicles the welcome and overdue return of Estleman's character Peter Macklin, here a retired hitman for the Detroit mob. A newlywed on his honeymoon, Macklin is spotted by an associate of Carlo Maggiore, "Carl Major", an old acquaintance and onetime target, who presses him into doing one more job. Macklin's young bride is monitored by Abilene, a pseudo-cowboy associate of Maggiore's and during the course of his duties, he lets slip who Macklin is and also shows off his own psycho tendencies, leading Laurie Macklin to attempt to slip his clutches.

The book switches back and forth from San Antonio, the site of Macklin's hit, to Los Angeles, and is very effective in building suspense, and supplying the viewpoints of several characters, including a detective transplanted to Texas from the Midwest and concerned about becoming too much of a Texan.
Macklin is a hard, tough character who previously appeared in Estleman's _Kill Zone_, _Any Man's Death_, and _Roses Are Dead_. He's reminiscent of Richard Stark's tough guy, Parker, though Parker is a thief who only kills when he has to, while Macklin is a killer, first and foremost. Hopefully, we won't have to wait another 10 years or more for the next Macklin book.

Cute and exciting both!

New, different and a fun read

I just read a bunch of reviews and was surprised by the negative ones. First of all, this is a collaboration not a typical Crusie or typical Doherty.

It is fiction, not reality, so the timelines shouldn't be such an issue, nor the plot for that matter. Of course it needs to be somewhat believeable as far as characters staying true to themselves - which they do. People are complaining that the hero slept with someone other than the hero is interesting to me. In Crusie's Fast Women, the heroine slept with the hero's best friend/business partner/cousin before she hooked up with the hero. And I loved it because that was what would have happened to those characters under those conditions. Did Crusie lose readers for that? Are those the same readers that don't appreciate the hero in Don't Look Down sleeping with the actress first?

I am a fan of both Crusie and Mayer. Their collaboration hit the high point of both of their talents as far as I'm concerned. I read Don't Look Down in two sittings and immediately started looking for their next book.

This is the first effort by this team. As they grow together, I expect it will only get better. But the first effort was more than good enough.

Entertainment is subjective. It's natural that the book wouldn't appeal to everyone. Even loyal fans who want to see their author stay the same and not branch out into something new and different.

Not only a Charlie Foxtrot, but WTF,O?

Yup, just like the Special Forces hero in the book, I can also use those cute little "secret" euphemisms. Most of us can. That's one of the many problems in this novel. It is assumed we are all ignorant of Military terminology and procedures so we are treated to long lessons in how to handle a gun, run an effective search, survive in a bar, wear a uniform, sleep in the open, etc., etc. Of course, in this book, only Special Forces can handle such vital challenges. CIA agents are described as smarmy and stupid, SEALS are brave but completely brain dead when they are not in the water, former military personnel are mercenaries. Heaven only knows how any of us have survived without our own Special Forces officer to cover our respective sixes. Evidently, you have never watched a war documentary, you have never read a spy thriller, you have never been in the military, you don't know anyone in the military, we don't ALL have a family member or friend who has been to Iraq, or is still in Iraq. We are all just big dumb civilians who trip over our feet and land in the nearest quagmire (needing to be rescued). I'd say `bite me', but that would be rude.

If the condescending tone of Special Forces conceit doesn't offend you, the characters should. Our hero's brain goes effectively south the moment he sees a firm set of silicon implants. We are treated to this attractive personality trait often, and in his thoughts he thinks this is `manly'. He knows how to `sprinkle the infield' (buy drinks for all the drunks in a bar), but not how to order room service at a Westin Hotel. Our Heroine, Lucy, is so charmed by his aboriginal mindset she crawls into his bed without invitation or encouragement, proudly hunting him down in the dark. After a wild night of sexual bliss in the swamp, she is certain he will commit to her forever, even though he is twice divorced (I can't imagine why) and she is fully aware that just a couple of nights before he found the same sexual bliss with a blond bimbo who also crawled into his bed without invitation. In short, Lucy is missing a few rounds in her logic magazine. She is not alone. Everyone in this book is physically perfect, and emotionally or intellectually stupid, with the exception of the five-year-old girl, Pepper, and the alligator, Moot. When a child and a lizard have to carry the burden of interest and believability, you know the storyline is in serious trouble.

I'd go into the plot here, but I really never found it, it was all over the map, and more contrivances were added or deleted during each chapter. The kid wanders around putting herself in danger then pretending to be Wonder Woman, then getting kidnapped and pulling the `Ransom of Red Chief' cliché. The sister turns to drugs to keep herself calm, then stops (with apparently no side-effects), gives Lucy advice on love (go back to the ex-husband, no wait, go seduce the Special Forces guy). The ex-husband constantly changes his feelings for Lucy (possessive love one minute, apathy the next), his character transforms from mercenary to terrorist to crook to mental case. The villains morph from being thugs to IRA ex-patriots to Russians to Terrorists to Mercenaries to Common Crooks. Unfortunately, as silly as all this sounds, it wasn't, it was just annoying.

I buy Jennifer Crusie novels automatically, she is usually fabulous with her plots, characters, wit, and empathy. You can always identify with at least one of her slightly flawed but wonderful characters, you always like the hero and heroine, you get laugh lines that require wrinkle cream to get rid of, her love scenes are so hot and passionate you need a cold shower. Your biggest worry is that you'll lend one of her books to someone and never get it back, so you buy extra copies. None of that is going to happen here.

English-born John Glatt is the author of Lost and Found, Secrets in the Cellar, Playing with Fire, and many other bestselling books of true crime. He has more than 30 years of experience as an investigative journalist in England and America. Glatt left school at 16 and worked a variety of jobs—including tea boy and messenger—before joining a small weekly newspaper. He freelanced at several English newspapers, then in 1981 moved to New York, where he joined the staff for News Limited and freelanced for publications including Newsweek and the New York Post. His first book, a biography of Billy Graham, was published in 1981, and he published For I Have Sinned, his first book of true crime, in 1998. He has appeared on television and radio programs all over the world, including Dateline NBC, Fox News, A Current Affair, BBC World News, and A&E Biography. It was a welcome day off for Chris Henkle, who had a long-standing arrangement to go fishing with his friend Dee Connors. Early May is the start of the spring trophy fishing season in the Chesapeake Bay, with rock fish, striped bass and perch, and the burly Virginia Beach fireman rose at the crack of dawn.At 5:45 a.m. he arrived at Connors’ house, finding him already waiting outside with his young son Sam and daughter Claire, excited to be going on their first fishing trip. After loading Connors’ twenty-one-foot fishing boat on a trailer, they made the short drive to the City Marina by Vista Circle.But as they launched the small boat into the choppy waters, it started raining.“It wasn’t as nice as we hoped for,” remembered Henkle. “The seas were kicking up a little bit, the wind was blowing and it was kinda chilly.”Around 7:30 a.m., Henkle took the wheel, heading out towards the 17.6-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, linking Virginia Beach to the Eastern Shore of Virginia—the Chesapeake Bay on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other.Acclaimed as one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world, the Bridge-Tunnel is composed of twelve miles of elevated roadway, two bridges, two mile-long tunnels and four artificial islands. It shaves 95 miles off the journey north from Virginia Beach to Delaware and beyond.As the busy rush hour traffic hummed 75 feet above, Henkle followed the Bridge-Tunnel on the Chesapeake Bay side. By now it was raining hard and rough-going, as they passed the first island, where the bridge dramatically plunges into a mile-long tunnel, connecting to the next bridge at Island 2.Eventually the wind dropped and the waters became calmer, as they sailed past Islands 3 and 4 to Fisherman Island, a private wildlife refuge at the tip of the Eastern Shore.“We dropped anchor,” remembered Henkle. “Fishing wasn’t real good that day, but we caught a couple of little mud sharks, some little spot and flounder. The kids were having a blast.”By 10:00 a.m. the rain had stopped and it was warming up, so they turned back towards the four artificial islands, where the fishing was good.As they passed Island 4, the two men were talking at the back of the boat, while 12-year-old Sam and his little sister played up front.“Hey,” said Connors suddenly. “You just passed a suitcase floating in the water. Turn around. Let’s check it out.”So Henkle cut off the engine and turned around, where a medium-sized dark green suitcase was gently bobbing in the water. As he pulled alongside it, Connors and his son grabbed the expandable handle to pull it aboard. But it was too heavy.Then Henkle came over and together they finally hauled it onboard.“It’s pirates’ treasure,” screamed Sam excitedly, unzipping the unlocked suitcase, which opened easily. Then the little boy folded back the soft cover to discover its contents, securely wrapped in thick black plastic trash bags.“I was nervous and looking around,” said Henkle. “Did we pick up something we shouldn’t have? Is whoever dropped it still here to make sure it sunk?”But before Henkle could tell him to zip it back up, Sam ripped open the soaking plastic bags, revealing two pale hairy legs, severed from the knees down.The little boy screamed, recoiling in horror as Henkle pulled him to the side of the boat. For several minutes they all just stared at the human legs without saying a word, as the terrible realization of what they had found dawned on them.“I knew it was foul play,” said Henkle. “Then I really started looking over my shoulder. Those legs looked very, very fresh. They didn’t have an odor.”After closing the bag, he nervously dialed 911 on his cell phone. Although they were far closer to the Eastern Shore, the Virginia Beach police dispatcher answered.“She thought I was kidding,” he said. “I said, ‘No. No. No. I need someone to come here and pick this thing up.’”The dispatcher told him to go to Island 4, where the Bridge-Tunnel police would meet him.Blood was leaking out of the suitcase, so the two men placed it at the back of the boat. Then they headed towards Island 4.When, after half an hour of circling it, there was still no sign of police, Henkle dialed 911 again. The dispatcher apologized for the delay, telling them to proceed to Island 2, promising that a police boat was already on its way.When the same thing happened at Island 2, Henkle became angry.“It was more than an hour after we had found the case,” he remembered, “and I’m really not happy. The boy was traumatized. I told him, ‘There’s no reason to get upset and nothing in there is going to hurt you. It’s something really bad, and you don’t need to worry about it.’”Finally, Henkle dialed 911 a third time, announcing that they were returning to the Virginia Beach marina.“There was starting to be a mess,” said Henkle. “The deck of the boat had turned pink. Blood was seeping out and I was worried.”It was around noon, about two hours after they had found the suitcase, as they approached the Lesner Bridge, that a Virginia Beach Special Operations Marine Patrol police boat came alongside. I guess she never heard of getting a divorce.....

I first learned of this story on an episode of "Snapped" and later read the book. Melanie McGuire, a mother and a well respected nurse decides she's had enough of her husband Bill. Not only does she kill him but she dismembers him, packs his body parts in a designer suitcase and dumps him in the Chesapeake Bay. She almost got away with it....

Without giving away too many details of the book, because it is an interesting read, one is left wondering if she did it alone? McGuire was a tiny woman yet she managed to drag her dead husband into a shower, dismember him, pack him up, carry him off to the car and then lift the suitcases to toss them in the bay? That sounds like a job for Wonder Woman.

Surely there had to be an easier way out for Melanie McGuire to be with her married lover (who told her he couldn't leave his wife). It wasn't the new home Bill purchased right before his death, because Melanie never moved into it. And it wasn't the custody of her children she feared losing, because she didn't seem to care about her kids. So what made Melanie think killing Bill would be the best option? We may never know.

Love that withstands all trials

Once rescued, he knew he could never return to Bella, else he would put her in danger from the villains that nearly destroyed him once before. Her only chance is if they believe him dead.

And so Noah Blake was born. With a new face and a new name, he can operate under the radar as part of an Elite Ops unit to bring the cartel down.

Now danger threatens Bella regardless of Nathan's absence from her life. To save her, he must go undercover as Noah Blake, sticking close to her side even while trying to keep his emotional distance, knowing they can never be together again. Easier said than done...

OK, so they aren't supposed to have relationships. That doesn't stop them, though, it only provides delicious obstacles to the happy ending we all know will be at the end of these tales. And so readers enjoy watching men who have steeled themselves against love fight a losing battle as they come face to face with the women who not only complete them, but challenge them, meeting them as equals in this battle of hearts.

The romance between Bella and Nathan/Noah in WILD CARD is all at once heartbreaking and uplifting. Nathan is a man who loves so absolutely that he can never be with a woman other than his Bella, no matter that her love is forever lost to him. He'll do anything, sacrifice everything, just to keep her safe and happy, no matter the cost to himself. His heart and soul yearn for the woman he loves, until what little resistance he had mustered crumbles beneath the weight of their mutual desire.

Bella is just a beautiful character. I'm not talking about looks, although obviously she is lovely, judging by the description of her in the book. Her personality is what really makes us believe that a man like Nathan could not only fall in love with her but forsake all other women in favor of Bella. Of course, she has done the same thing for her Nathan. No matter that she has been told he is dead, somehow her heart never quite believes it, and she cannot move on - until Noah Blake appears on her doorstep.

What ensues when these two are finally reunited are some emotionally charged, scintillating love scenes that will have you squirming in your seat even while you are reaching for tissues to dry your eyes.

Over the years, Lora Leigh has developed into an author adept at playing readers' emotions as easily as she might a musical instrument, and never has this been more evident than in the heart-stopping romance in WILD CARD.

Readers familiar with Leigh's "tempting seals" series will remember the character of Nathan Malone, who remained true to his wife while enduring the most horrific conditions imaginable when held captive by a drug lord who had him so doped up on an aphrodisiac (think PCP mixed with Spanish Fly) that he opts to remain dead to his family rather than return half a man with sexual issues brought on by the many months of captivity and restraint.

It's been six years since Nathan "died" and he now works for a clandestine group knows as the Elite Ops, going by the name of Noah Blake. When a white supremacy militia group in his hometown has engaged in murderous "hunts" and now is targeting his former business as a place to launder their ill gotten gains (thus endangering his wife Sabella), he is reluctant at first to take the case. But in the end he does and comes face to face with the independent woman that his wife has become (or was she always like that and he just didn't see it?) He discovers that she has never really gotten over the loss of her husband, and has dated infrequently, while her home is still a shrine to Nathan. He suddenly finds that he is jealous of ... himself? Working undercover at his garage, he's in a position to investigate and protect. But just how deep is the organization in the small town that he loves? As much as Bella fights her attraction to yet another alpha man, she notices some similarities between her new lover and her husband.

Leigh had me hooked and hungering for a story about tortured SEAL Nathan. But unfortunately, this story just did not do the character of Nathan justice. When is too much sex too much? Well, in Leigh's case, it's when the sexual passages outnumber the rest of the plot to the point where they detract from the story. While I usually love Leigh's passionate storylines, this one was just ridiculous - I finally started to skip them altogether because they were so numerous and redundant. I felt like I was reading a horrible Shannon McKenna novel which are virtually plotless. And all that dirty talk just made me want to tell them to hush already and get it over with. The plot itself was pretty interesting (what little there was of it), but all the licking, sucking, talking, nipping, tugging, petting, talking, growling, mewling, talking, spanking, and other assorted verbs just subtract from the flow of the story.

Five Blue Ribbons!

Dead men stay dead. At least that is the motto of the six `dead' men of the Elite Ops. WILD CARD is the first book of this new series and features Nathan Malone, who readers first met in Lora Leigh's HIDDEN AGENDAS.

Nathan Malone died at the hands of the sadistic drug lord Diego Fuentes. It is in the files and it is public knowledge. The funeral was planned and held and his widow grieved. Six years later Noah Blake roars into Alpine, TX on the back of a Harley. Bearded, blue eyed, and alpha to the bone, Noah is on a mission - to find the murderous faction of a white supremacist group hunting illegal aliens, and to connect with one Sabella Malone. Not necessarily in that order.

Sabella Malone loved her husband Nathan with every single beat of her heart and every breath she ever breathed. When he died six years ago on a mission she thought she would die with him so great was the pain she felt. For years nothing mattered; but when her world didn't end, Sabella slowly learned to live again. Dating men but not allowing them close to her heart, Sabella is stunned at the heated attraction she instantly experiences with the new mechanic her brother in law hired behind her back - Noah Blake; blue-eyed Noah Blake.

Noah rides into town under the deep cover of his mission. His eyes are looking for the only woman he has ever loved and when he finds her under the engine of an automobile, he recognizes that Sabella has changed. What he doesn't realize is that the Bella he knew is not the Sabella of today. Intrigued and unable to contain his desire, Noah sets out to insinuate himself in Sabella's life - at least for a little while - because once the Elite Ops' mission is complete, Noah Blake will have to disappear.

While reading HIDDEN AGENDAS, also by Lora Leigh, my heart hurt for the Navy SEAL so abused but still so steadfast in his wedding vows to his wife. I yearned for his book and for his happy ending. Not one word of this highly emotional and addicting novel, WILD CARD, has disappointed me. Noah Blake, while a changed man, continued to be true to his wife and though six years had passed, almost three of them spent recovering; Noah still honored his wedding vows. A more perfect character I have yet to meet.

WILD CARD is an intoxicating first installment of a brand new series. The words flow, the emotions are raw, and love is in the air. Add in the danger of Noah's mission and I could not have asked for a better book. I can't recommend WILD CARD enough. It is ultimately one of the most satisfying books I have ever read penned by this prolific and talented author.

Twenty-two-year-old Eddie Seda lived with his mother and sister in an apartment in Brooklyn. He had no job, no wife, no girlfriend, no friends. He was desperate to become somebody important. The person he chose to "be" was the infamous Zodiac killer who haunted San Francisco during the late 1960s. Between 1990 and 1995 Seda shot nine people in a pattern according to their zodiac signs, sent cryptic messages to the New York Post in a style imitating the original Zodiac, and then finally, in 1996, staged a fierce firefight with the police after barricading himself in the apartment. Kieran Crowley, who covered this "New York Zodiac" as a reporter for the Post, has a lively, dramatic style that is well-suited to his fictionalized accounts of Seda's inner thoughts and private rituals. At times, though, Crowley's prose is overly excited, even sloppy--such as referring to a DNA fingerprint as a "map" of the "genetic code."

Chapter 1FAUST IN BROOKLYNEDDIE was seated at the small wooden desk in his room, a table lamp lighting its surface. He had lived in the room, with the same furniture, since grammar school and the ten-by-twelve-foot room still looked like the home of a very neat sixth-grader. Nothing was out of place. His legs, clad in black pants, barely fit under the tiny desk, which faced the white wall. To his right was a long, low chest of red drawers that still had his Boy Scout stickers stuck onto the front.Eddie was twenty-two years old and only left his room for a few hours each night. He had no job, no wife or girlfriend. He had no friends. He had only his work.Open before him was one of his most prized possessions, a large piece of heavy paper with white dots and lines on a huge black circle--a star chart of the constellations in the heavens.Framed by black, arched brows, his brown eyes were focused on the star map, eyeing the white spots and faint lines that connected them into the ghostly, floating figures of the zodiac. Eddie's black T-shirt and pants made his untanned olive skin seem lighter than it was. His curly black hair was pulled tight behind his head into a small ponytail and gathered with multicolored rubber bands. A full black mustache and rough half-growth of beard coveredhalf of the smooth skin of his boyish, handsome face, which bore an intense, angry expression.One more time, he spun the dark circle of sky, until he was looking at the stars and constellations for that night after midnight, May 31, 1990. Orion the Hunter and the Pleiades--the Seven Sisters--were safely below the horizon but Leo the Lion was loose in the sky.Good. Perfect.On the desktop, over the star chart, Eddie carefully spread out his school supplies--a blue ballpoint pen, a green felt-tipped pen, white paper, a compass, and a ruler--as if he were beginning his geometry homework. Nearby, wrapped in a piece of paper, sat three large pebbles.He pulled on a pair of black leather gloves. From a plastic package, he removed a sheet of white looseleaf paper with five punched holes down the left margin. School paper. Using the compass and pens, he carefully drew and wrote his message on the page.When he was finished, he folded the paper several times around the stones and drew something on the outside. Then he wrapped the package in another sheet of paper. He took off his gloves and put most of his writing supplies away into their drawer, arranging the pens and compass in an orderly row. He left out one green felt-tipped pen.Eddie's drawers were very neat. All of his clothes and books and papers and toys were stacked and aligned properly, the same way every time, with the corners of some things pointing to specific letters or spots on the object below. Only his bureau was locked, but it didn't matter. If anyone ever went through the books or magazines in his closets or his files, he would know because they could never replace them exactly. The booby-trapped stack was a trick he had learned while studying to be a secret operative.His dream of being a U.S. Army Special Forces commando never came true because he was an only son. Theywould not take him into the army and give him a real gun of his own--because he had failed their tests and because his mother did not want to be left alone. But just because Eddie had to stay with his mother in East New York, Brooklyn, one of the most crime-plagued and drug-infested neighborhoods in the city, didn't mean he couldn't be a commando. It certainly didn't mean he would cease his quest for knowledge, especially if it was forbidden or hidden.He turned and glanced at the red numbers of his clock radio, 12:02 A.M. It was time. He stood, turned around, and walked a few steps to a wrought-iron and wood table that held a twelve-inch color television. On a low shelf below the televison sat a cedar box emblazoned with a cross inside a circle. Eddie opened the casketlike box and removed the white leather family Bible. Numerous mass cards from funerals Eddie had attended, as well as slips of paper, were used as bookmarks and protruded past the gilt-edged pages.On the wall above the TV hung a church calendar, with a bow of dried palm fronds received in church on Palm Sunday tucked into the top. To the right of the calendar was another set of four shelves, which contained more religious materials. A second Bible in Spanish belonged to Eddie's mother, but he used it often. Several religious medals were also displayed, including a commemorative Pope Paul bronze medallion.In a place of honor, on top of the Spanish Bible, was a red five-by-seven-inch paperback book, The 6th and 7th Books of Moses, or Moses' Magical Spirit Art. The cover featured an engraving of Michelangelo's marble sculpture of the prophet Moses. In this version, the two horns on Moses' head were very prominent and devil-like and the Hebrew holy man stared back with sorcerer's eyes.The book was filled with several works on white magic and black magic and offered the sorcerer's apprentice page after page of magic charms, cabalistic circles, and secretincantations to call up spirits eager to do his bidding. A treatise from 1850 on astrological influences and magical cures stated that the ancients believed that "the heavenly bodies were gifted with life and that they, being endowed with higher powers, could exercise an influence upon man by means of mysterious magical influences, could regulate his temperament, his disposition and his term of life." One part of the book was devoted to necromancy, the art of speaking to the dead in order to predict the future and grant wishes. There were complete instructions, some by the legendary magician Faust himself, on how to conjure up demons like Mephistopheles--the devil. Another section was devoted to the magical use of the Psalms of the Bible, which, combined with certain arcane rituals, would secure all manner of help for the user, it said. Small scraps of paper had been used to mark certain pages, and important rituals had been circled or marked. The white pages were stained in several places with oils and what appeared to be blood.Eddie took his Moses book off the shelf and placed it, along with the white Bible, on the desk. He sat down and opened the Moses book to page 161, where he had left a clean piece of paper as a bookmark. The name "Faust" had been scribbled in the margin of the book next to a passage on the magical use of one of the Psalms:You should write the 83rd Psalm properly, upon pure parchment, and suspend it around your neck, and by so doing you will abide safely in war, avoiding defeat and captivity. If you should, however, be overcome, your captors will not harm you, for even in captivity no harm can befall you.Eddie opened the white Bible to the 83rd Psalm, picked up a green felt-tipped pen, and carefully began to copy the words of the Psalm onto the loose piece of paper. He smiled to himself as he copied the line about the enemiesof the Lord that "have taken crafty counsel against thy Hidden Ones." Like Eddie. The words of the Psalm implored God to make the enemies perish and become "as dung for the earth." When Eddie had finished, he poked two holes in the top of the paper and threaded a black shoelace through it and hung the talisman around his neck.He stood and walked past the television to the corner of his room, to his cabinet of curiosities, a dark walnut bureau with two large doors. He unlocked it with a key from his pants pocket and pulled open the left door. Inside, hanging from a bar near the top, were Eddie's night clothes, including a black jacket, his maroon Omega beret, and other dark apparel, all in proper size order. Below the hanging clothes were several pairs of black shoes and sneakers and a pair of dark leather boots, with 2½-inch heels. He slipped on the jacket, then sat on the end of his bed and pulled on his boots, zipping up the sides above the ankle. Eddie's small bed was barely big enough for his wiry frame. Neatly made, it was covered with a pink satin quilt and two pillows decorated with large matching pink roses.Taller now, he stood up and put on a black navy watch cap, like a SEAL commando before a mission. He tucked his black leather gloves and a spare hat into his jacket pocket, along with a small black penlight, and then pulled open the right door of the bureau, revealing an open shelf area above four drawers. A dozen shiny cylinders sat on the open shelf--stacks of silver quarters.He pulled open the second drawer and pored over his glittering collection of knives, all arranged side by side, like in a store or museum. Also decorating the drawer were his razor-sharp ninja throwing stars, his brass knuckles, and military insignia.He selected a sheathed dagger and pulled the gleaming 3½-inch blade from its scabbard to make sure it was spotless before he slipped it inside his belt. He closed the drawer and pulled open the one below it.Unlike the sparkling weapons above, the drawer containedrows of dull gray metal pipes that were strung with loose brown shoestrings and heavy rubber bands and wrapped at the ends with white adhesive tape. Some had wooden handles. The objects looked like pieces of scrap metal or make-believe plumbing thrown together by a child. In the back of the drawer was a row of small, square cardboard boxes, each of which contained 50 bullets of .22-caliber, .38-caliber, 9-millimeter, or .380 automatic rounds, all with soft-nosed lead tips. Eddie took two spare 9-millimeter bullets, squat brass cartridges topped by fat lead slugs, and slipped them into his pants pocket, in casehe was followed. He fondly regarded his clunky creations and selected one heavy, foot-long pipe that had a T-juncture and a protruding six-inch piece of pipe in the middle, the shorter piece of pipe wrapped in white adhesive tape. He picked the object up by the short, white handle. A commercial logo, "U.S. Pipe" was molded in raised letters on the middle fitting. Eddie liked that because the large letters "U.S." reminded him of the U.S. Army.Eddie glanced up at the wall to the right of the bureau, where four wooden shelves displayed plastic models he had constructed years ago. On top was a large aircraft carrier, a battleship below that. Two models of jet aircraft were nose-to-nose on the third shelf, and the bottom shelf held a tank and missile carriers. They were empty toy missiles, war planes that would never fly, warships that would never sail, or even float. As a child, growing up without his father, Eddie enjoyed assembling the hundreds of tiny pieces. He liked working alone in his room, slowly, painstakingly, and still did. The best part was when he would show his mother a completed model. She would beam with pride and make a big fuss over him, calling him by his nickname, Herri. She praised his talent and skill and even bragged to visitors about her smart son. But, after her next husband arrived, and, later, Eddie's half-sister was born, his mother had less and less time for him. Even when that husband left, like the others, it was never the same.The make-believe guns on the models would never fire, but the one he made with his own hands from junk did. What would his mother say if she knew?He placed the weird weapon into the left inside pocket of his jacket. He then took the twice-wrapped message from his desk and put it into another pocket.He picked up the Moses book to refresh his memory. Everything must be done exactly right. He turned to the marker for page 152 and scanned down the page to where "Faust" had been written in the left margin and a drop of oil stained the page next to one familiar entry:PSALM 20--Mix in a vessel, rose-oil, water and salt, pray over it seven times in the most holy name Jeho, this Psalm and a suitable prayer, in a low voice and with reverence, then annoint with this oil your face and hands, and sprinkle it on your clothing, and you will remain free from all danger and suffering that day. Are you summoned to appear before the judge in person, in a judicial trial, you should avail yourself of the above means shortly beforehand, and by so doing you will surely be justified and depart without restraint.Eddie did an about-face and walked to the outside wall of his room, to an oval mirror with an ornate dark wooden frame hanging on the wall. It had once hung lower on the wall, so little Eddie could dress for school, but it had been raised so a 5-foot-8-inch Eddie could now see himself in the glass. Below the mirror was a child-size wooden table with a small bowl partly filled with water. Next to it were a salt shaker and a bottle of rose oil. Into the bowl he poured some rose oil and sprinkled some salt, and mixed it with his finger.Every move he made was reflected in the glass, as if two Eddies were at work. The letters on the sign around his neck were backwards in the mirror and seemed mysterious,like the magic of the ancient Hebrews in the book.He picked up the white Bible and opened it to a bookmark. He began to read Psalm 20 of David in a low and reverent voice, low enough not to wake his mother and sister, who were asleep in the next room. Seven times he intoned the words of the Psalm, an ancient battle hymn whose music had been lost long ago. The words called on God to protect His anointed and implored Him to "accept all thy offerings, and accept thy burnt sacrifice."Eddie felt a deep, rumbling wave approaching, coming up through his feet, building, coming closer. He let it flow through his entire body. The room began to shake and rattle like a gentle earthquake from the subsonic vibration of the subway four stories below the floor, beneath Pitkin Avenue. Slowly, the earthquake subsided as the train passed.He felt a cool draft on his face. A soft May breeze of spring air was wafting through the two large windows on either side of the mirror. Both windows opened onto a metal fire escape outside. The wind was billowing the curtains decorated with big, fat blue roses that matched the sky-blue sections on the patterned cobalt-blue linoleum floor. The flooring was old and worn through in several spots, but had been mopped at least once that day and sparkled with cleanliness.Eddie stepped to the barred windows, which were covered with an ugly lattice of steel security gates, to keep out criminals. But the breeze didn't smell like roses of any color; it stank like East New York. Through the metal, he looked out of the crumbling century-old building he lived in, at an almost identical building next door. Looking up, he could barely see a little patch of midnight sky, but no stars. Too much pollution, too many lights. But the stars were there--even in the daytime--guiding our destiny, even if nobody could see them or bothered to look.Eddie felt another wave building inside him, but this time it wasn't the subway. It was the feeling, as if the spiritof Zodiac was entering his body. He could feel hot, red rage emanating from his groin, building, flowing upward, tightening his stomach, anger and pain and fear enflaming his heart and face, in shivering wave after wave. Soon, he would find a new victim to fire it into. He would spread fear. He let the anger flow through him and pass. He was in control. He could control it because he kept himself pure. He was not a sinful fornicator. He had never had sex with anyone. God knew that.Wearing his high-heeled leather boots, he was as tall as the San Francisco Zodiac, which made it harder to identify him by height. Since there were no prints on the letter in his pocket, the cops would have to believe the California Zodiac had come to New York.Very soon the anger would flow through him again and it would be harder to control. Only one thing could satisfy that feeling, and the time was right, according to the stars.The only ones who could stop Zodiac from bringing forth the twelve signs--one victim for each astrological sign--were Orion and the Seven Sisters, and they were not in the sky. But Eddie's sign, Leo the Lion, was prowling the sky above, protecting him, giving him power. Just like the other times.It was time for Zodiac to strike again. Zodiac would follow his next target. the new York zodiac

Good read. Most people don't know that new York city had it's own zodiac killer.

He had a schizoid personality - they don't need much in the way of personal relationships with others.

He made his own zip guns - homemade gun out of metal tube that can fire one bullet. He would go out at late at night night and shoot some random person walking alone.

Police had no idea who he was until he shot his sister in their apartment one day, and she called 911. She didn't know he was the zodiac.

He then started shooting out window of apartment.

Great book

I read a lot of true crime books and all I can say is: spend the money and read the book. Crowley really gets into the mind of the killer. Awesome story-telling.

Disorganized and uninteresting

Ressler writes a rather disjointed and perfunctory summary of cases he has been involved with, some in a very minor way. He doesn't go into any of them in much detail, and you get the feeling he has a lot of personal axes to grind and rivalries with his former co-workers to air out. For example he says more than once that, despite what his detractors have claimed, he doesn't actively solicit work, but rather he is sought out by his clients. John Douglas is mentioned only once, in a rather critical way, but Douglas's books are far better written and more interesting.

"He Who Fights Monsters" sequel chronicles Dahmer & Gacy

Robert Ressler updates his career experiences in profiling serial killers and training local law enforcement in these techniques. He covers a number of cases outside the US, on which he was called to consult. He concludes with excerpts from his interviews with Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy. These interviews were the most interesting and enlightening parts of this book. Worthwhile reading, but not nearly as chilling or eduational as "He Who Fights Monsters".

Ressler sounds angry at the FBI

I have enjoyed reading true crime for some time now including Whoever Fights Monsters, But this book is self serving and does not introduce any new information you have not already read. It seems Mr. Ressler is angry at John Douglas and others for not aknowledging his effort while an active profiler and he is trying to show them he was first or best or something. The message was lost on me. The interviews are something to read however the bulk of the book is simply a retread of his previous works. My advice. Skip it.
