The Med (Dan Lenson Novels), by David Poyer

A powerful and fast-moving tale of the Navy-Marine Corps team in action, on a dangerous mission in the volatile Eastern Mediterranean.

Cloaked by the mists of dawn, Task Force 61-- carrying tanks, aircraft, and over 5000 Marines-- steams toward Syria with deadly intent. Their mission: rescue 100 hostages from a terrorist stronghold-- alive.

With realism seldom seen in military fiction, The Med is a magnificent and timely epic that brings the human drama of armed conflict compellingly to life. Driven by believable, flesh-and-blood characters, it is a painstakingly detailed portrait of amphibious warfare as only David Poyer can paint it. The Med is today's most explosive tale of international crisis, personal valor, and emotional struggle-- a disturbingly plausible novel that crackles with non-stop action.

From Publishers Weekly
In the mold of such novels as From Here to Eternity and the recent Time and Tide, this is a powerful story, as honest as it is imaginative, about a joint Navy-Marine task force on a mission to rescue a large group of American and British hostages being held in Syria by Palestinian terrorists. The plot revolves around a few key characters, each in the grip of crises both personal and relevant to the fate of the mission. Among the well-delineated principals are the force commander, a jittery, careerist commodore unworthy of his rank; a naval lieutenant trying to live down a tragic past mistake; a chief engineer who figures in a wonderfully vivid engine-room drama; a sensitive, guitar-playing black who feels out of place in the Marines; the lieutenant's wife, who is among the hostages; and the terrorist leader, ruthless yet with a certain charisma. The commodore's inadequacies jeopardize the Marine assault that is the story's exciting climax. Readers will be gripped by the impression that these are real men in a realistic, and indeed uncomfortably topical, situation. Poyer is a former Navy officer.

From Library Journal
A naval task force in the Mediterranean is ordered to rescue Americans captured by Palestinian terrorists. The wife and daughter of one of the task force's officers are among the hostages. The characters come from every side of a large-scale rescuethe head terrorist, the Navy wife, the commodore, ships' officers, petty officers, a Marine, etc. There is surprisingly little of the complicated and sophisticated machinery of modern warfare, but there are a lot of interior monologues from various introspective and talky people. The plot lines all tie up neatly in an implausible denouement. An overheated, panoramic novel of naval operations that only occasionally raises interest. Edwin B. Burgess, U.S. Army TRALINET Ctr., Fort Monroe, Va.

The Real Navy - Real Med
By Larry Thornberry
"The Med" is a great read. I say this not just because I'm a former destroyer sailor who enjoys an authentic rendering of naval action, though the book would have repaid my time on this basis alone. "The Med" is also a compelling story with believable characters (some sympathetic, some contemptible) dealing with real issues under real stress.
The central character, Lietunant Junior Grade Dan Lenson, is an appealing man whose integrity you can feel as you watch him struggle with the question of just how far one has to go in the name of duty. Just how much one has to put up with from a swine with four stripes. You see him realize, intellectually and viscerally, that the orders he gives (or doesn't give) may decide whether men live or die. The Queeg-like Sundstrom (not as crazy as Queeg, but as conniving and perhaps even more inadequate) shows how everyone's life can be put in danger by a dithering, totally self-centered, incompetent commander.
I don't know how people who've not been in the Navy will react to the build-up of tension between the junior officer Lenson and the incompetent and evil commadore. For those who understand what total control a commander at sea has over a subordinate, and what serious business it is to even appear to question authority, there will be some electric moments. (By comparison, telling a civilian boss to shove off is nothing; I've done it more than once with hardly a measurable change in my blood pressure.)
The story is a believable and complex one (that could go from novel to headline anyday) involving an amphibious task force in the Mediterranean compelled by terrorits to go into action fraught with physical, political, and military peril. In sub-plots we follow a squad of marines fighting each other until they face a real enemy; a first-rate chief machinists mate who must battle old, balky equipment as well as officers who demand too much (some things never change); and an officer's wife who must decide whether she loves her husband as much as she hates the Navy. These are played out against the background of vicious Middle East politics and resentments and the struggle between a good officer pushed almost beyond humnan endurance and a horrible officer in busines for himself.
And boy does Poyer - a former Navy officer - reproduce Navy life accurately. Not just in the speech and jargon, though that's right on. I could almost smell the salt water and feel the ship roll under me as I read. I almost expected to hear a bosun's whistle (fortunately, I didn't taste the creamed chipped beef). He has everything down right: the Marines' cocky attitudes, the chiefs' raunchy stories, and the weariness of the sleepless drudgery that makes up so much of Navy life at sea. Poyer's Navy is so real I feel that after I've read all his novels (and I plan to) I'll rate another hash mark.

A truly outstanding novel of epic proportions!
By Roger Blair rbblair@ctonline.it
As a fellow Naval Officer,I know naval terminology and ships. David Poyer provides all the action and sounds found on naval vessels. His indepth knowledge provides realistic sights and sounds of the "old Navy". I highly recommend this book and the other Navy series to anyone interested in great mysteries.

So real-life it crackles!
By A Customer
When my son bought me my first David Poyer naval drama book, I thought, ho-hum. Then I started to read and was immediately caught up in the shiveringly realistic scenes of life aboard a naval ship. David Polder has spent a career in the Navy and makes you feel as if you are right there on the bridge.

Polder follows his main character, Dan Lenson, through his career in the Navy and throughout the series of books, we follow Lenson from a raw, new ensign to a fully fledged naval officer who has done it all-- including being lost at sea with 120 men being nipped at by sharks after his ship has sunk. Really incredible!

Polder writes so beautifully you can feel the hot sun, smell the 40 foot waves splashing over the boat, feel what it's like to be down in a sub listening to "pings" from sonar radar. These aren't just shoot-em-up books but fully detailed novels that illuminate the cruel, beautiful, exciting world of men at sea and at war. By the way, Polder has more of these books besides THE MED. THE GULF is another great one. Once you've read one, you'll start browsing the bookstores for the others. Why AMAZON doesn't have more, beats me. Polder is quite a find.

From Publishers Weekly
It's not easy being rich, gorgeous, successful and a happily married mom, but Mafia princess turned Hollywood producer and real estate mogul Lucky Santangelo, last seen in 1999's Dangerous Kiss, again proves up to the challenge. In Collins's latest vendetta romance, Lucky plans her father Gino's 95th birthday bash while building a Las Vegas megaresort, unaware that family foe Anthony Bonar (né Bonnatti) is plotting revenge. In turn, Anthony is unaware of wife Irma's sexual awakening in the arms of their Mexican gardener, who in turn is unaware of Irma's affair with a federal drug enforcement agent. Meanwhile Lucky's 16-year-old daughter, Max, tells her parents she's with friends when she's really headed to a rendezvous with a man she meets on the Internet. That date provides the novel's fast-paced action, while Irma provides the novel's best sex and violence. Less gripping subplots include the on-again off-again relationship between Lucky's business partner, Alex, and his jealous girlfriend, as well as the off-again on-again romance between Lucky's best friend, the diva Venus, and her star-stud boyfriend, Billy. Collins delivers Lucky's usual mix of celebrity fantasy and godfather justice while Max promises to grow up in future sequels as troublesome and triumphant as her glitzy mom. (June)

From Booklist
In this big, splashy Hollywood-based novel, Collins resurrects one of her favorite characters, the hard-edged, rich, talented, and beautiful Lucky Santangelo. Lucky, whose pampered Hollywood lifestyle belies her tough background (several members of her family were gunned down in a Mafia-related incident, and Lucky herself took revenge on the killer), is now a high-flying Hollywood player. Tired of the Hollywood scene, she decides to reinvent herself as a Vegas hotel mogul, which puts her and her family in danger when an old enemy of the Santangelos resurfaces and attempts to exact revenge. At the same time, Lucky's teenage daughter, Max, a younger version of her tough and lovely mother, sneaks off for a weekend away with a man she has met on the Internet. Unluckily for Max, the man turns out to be a crazed ex-actor who was once snubbed by Lucky on an audition. Of course, everything works out for Lucky and family in the end. There are many, many subplots, lots of tangential characters, and loads of steamy sex. Collins' fans, and fans of the genre, will be clamoring for this one. Hughes, Kathleen

Lucky's back :-0
By Little Miss Cutey
For all Jackie Collins fans who have read previous books that star Lucky, you'll be glad to see/read that she's back. It's the 6th book involving her and she is quite a character. She's the kind of woman that all women would like to be because she says what she wants and means and gets away with it all.

Here she has a 16 year old daughter in this story who is now online meeting perverts and an older guy who says he is 19 without her mom knowing. She is building a new hotel in Vegas and has that to deal with. Of course no Jackie Collins book would be complete without a villan (Anthony Bonar) who is someone from her past who's planning to take everything from her.

While I'm near the end, I'm reading it at a rapid pace because it's so trashily addictive. There is something about her books that suck you in and get you hooked. I'm loving this one and with only 40 pages to go until the end, I want the next Lucky Santangelo book to come out. This is trash at it's absolute best.

Less "Drop Dead Beautiful" and more "Drop the ball"
By She Reads and Dreams
It breaks my heart to give this book two stars. I absolutely LOVE Lucky Santangelo and have been following Collins' books starring this absolutely kick a** heroine for a long time now. I was excited to hear Drop Dead Beautiful was in the works and eagerly devoured it. However, it is sadly just not up to the standard Collins has raised her trashy fiction to in previous Lucky books.

*Small spoilers ahead - nothing huge!*

The good stuff: catching up with Lucky and Lennie (LOVE them together); seeing how Venus' life is developing as an aging movie actress (at 43 or something she's ancient by Hollywood standards) and of course, watching 95 year old Gino in his element as a family man.

The bad stuff: there is basically zero Lucky plot development. The whole book is about her being angry with her daughter Max (a renamed Maria) and opening a new Vegas hotel. That's it. Hardly any of Lucky's kick a** personality is present and she never gets to dish out revenge in the typical Santangelo style we've all come to know and love. Max is kinda cool - almost like Lucky was when she was 16 - but she isn't a strong enough character to carry the book and that's what Collins forces her to do. Of course the Bonnatti family make another appearance (don't these people ever die?!) and are pretty much to Lucky novels what the DiMera family are to Days of Our Lives. I'm pretty sick of that family, and the new Bonnatti follows the bad guy stereotype Collins is very fond of - a masochist, self centred, egotistical scumbag with absolutely no redeeming features.

I guess I just expected so much more from Lucky - I'd like to see Collins take a few risks with her if she is going to write another Lucky novel. Kill Lennie off (I know, I love him too!), move that Alex/Lucky angle that has been treading water since Lennie was kidnapped in Italy several books ago somewhere, do something more with Bobby, do something more with Bridgette. Both Bobby and Bridgette were sadly underused in this effort.

C'mon Jackie Collins - I know you've got another slap down, knock 'em out Lucky novel in you...give our girl something to fight against. No one messes with the Santangelo's, right?

A fast, entertaining read.
By Nick G
Lucky Santangelo is back! This time around Lucky has given up the movie business to pursue the business venture of opening a hotel in Vegas. As Lucky prepares to open The Keys, her sixteen year-old daughter Max prepares to lose her virginity to a friend she met on the Internet. However, this Internet friend is not really a friend...he's a twisted young man seeking revenge against Lucky. Also looking for revenge is Anthony "Bonatti" Bonar, a psycho mob killer hoping to make Lucky pay for murdering his father. While Anthony runs around cheating, murdering and plotting his revenge, his lonely wife Irma realizes she has had it with her husband and plans to stop him once and for all. Add to this mix movie star Venus Maria, her young boy-toy boyfriend, an infatuated movie director, his jealous girlfriend, Lucky's ninety five year-old father Gino, and a star-studded event to celebrate the opening of The Keys that ends in several murders and you have classic Jackie Collins!

`Drop Dead Beautiful' is pure entertainment. Fans of Jackie Collins know that she has always been a master at creating fast-paced tales of wealth, action and murder, all while juggling many character plot lines. Even though some of the character story lines are boring, the least interesting being that of Venus Maria and her boyfriend, the lead plots of Max and her near-death encounter, Bonar's revenge, Irma getting even, and Lucky's hotel opening are strong enough to have readers racing through the pages.

Jackie Collins has created another winner that will fly up the bestseller lists.

The Man Who Invented Florida (Doc Ford Novels), by Randy Wayne White

When solitary marine biologist Doc Ford focused his telescope on the woman in the white boat, he didn't know his life was about to be capsized: that his conniving uncle Tucker Gatrell would discover the Fountain of Youth, that The National Enquirer would write about it, and that the law would beat down his door in search of three missing men.

But Doc Ford is about to find these things out-- the hard way. Because in the shadowy world of Southwest Florida, where gators yawn, cattle craze, and Indian bones are buried, mysteries great and small have found the man to solve them...in The Man Who Invented Florida by bestselling author Randy Wayne White.

From Publishers Weekly
In the third Doc Ford adventure, White again seamlessly splices an offbeat west coast of Florida locale with even more offbeat inhabitants. Principal among them is Doc Ford, who operates a small biological-supply business from a lab in his stilt-supported house. Lately, Doc has tried to control his telescope viewing of a tanned, red-haired woman who skinny-dips off an offshore sailboat and to limit his beer intake to four a day. While trying to be patient with his hippie pal Thomlinson, who drops by to expound on many topics, Doc reluctantly gets involved with his Uncle Tucker, who lives up the coast in Mango. Tuck has discovered a well of healing water on his land that he claims is responsible for his old gelded horse's newly grown testicles. Smuggled into a local rest home, the water has dramatically revived the moribund sex life of his Native American buddy Joseph Egret. Tuck's trouble is his somewhat uncertain ownership of the land. While he importunes Doc for help, the local news focuses on the disappearance into the mangrove swamps of two government investigators and a much loathed TV fisherman. Like fellow Floridian Carl Hiaasen, White ( The Heat Islands ) is adept at weaving ecological concerns into an oddball narrative with no loss of steam. The fate of the three missing men, even by bizarre Florida crime fiction standards, is inspired.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Series veterans Marion "Doc" Ford and hippie friend Tomlinson ( Sanibel Flats , St. Martin's, 1990) become tangentially involved in the case of three men who go missing near Dinkin's Bay. The "victims" seem to have nothing in common except bad luck; their portion of a broader story melds with a mostly amusing plot dealing with the proposed government expansion of the Everglades National Park. White offers an eclectic vision of Florida with his laid-back prose but pays close attention to various "characters," especially Marion's braggart uncle. Upbeat, literate, fascinating, and clever: manna for deeper readers.

From Booklist
Doc Ford operates a small Florida marine supply business, but his passion is marine research. Ford's uncle, Tucker Gatrell, an old Florida cowboy who at various times has been a guide, a poacher, a rumrunner, and a gun dealer, thinks he's found the fountain of youth in a small sulfurous spring on his property--or what used to be his property until he sold it to the state for a national park addition. Tucker's partner is Joseph Egret, a Native American who escaped from a nursing home after a few doses of Tucker's alleged magic elixir. The two old-timers want Ford's help in analyzing and eventually marketing the potion. Ford tries to wash his hands of the pair but gets sucked in when three prominent Floridians disappear in the area and Tucker becomes a suspect. The mystery aspects of White's tale--though expertly developed and perfectly engaging--pale next to the extraordinary characters and pointedly humorous dialogue. Maybe it's the presence of the Chief Broom-like Joseph Egret, but this unusual and very entertaining novel may remind readers of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. Tucker Gatrell and Randall Patrick McMurphy are certainly kindred spirits. Wes Lukowsky

A different Doc Ford tale
By RevChrisEsq
One reviewer posted that "even an average Doc Ford story is better than most". While that's certainly true, I'm not sure this is an "average" Doc Ford story--it's just different.
Because it's barely about Doc Ford. Oh sure he appears here and there and sort of rescues the situation at the end. But the story is really about Doc's uncle and his Indian friend/co hort.
Which by the way, does make this the funniest in the Doc Ford series.
Having read every one of the 10 Doc Ford books as of end of 2003, here's my list of how they all rate, (drum roll, please):
(5 stars)
Captiva
Twelve Mile Limit
Shark River
The Heat Islands
Ten Thousand Islands
Sanibal Flats (the first in the series)
The following are the 4 stars in the series--great stories, but I wouldn't recommend them as a first read of the author:
Everglades
The Man Who Invented Florida
North of Havana
The Mangrove Coast

Good, but don't over-expect...
By Jack Dempsey
As has been said countless times here, this is a different type of Doc Ford book. Perhaps I did somewhat of a disservice to myself---I started my love of (fictional) Randy Wayne White with "The Ten Thousand Islands." I then worked my way backwards to "The Mangrove Coast," "Captiva," and "North of Havana." I have yet to pick up "Sanibel Flats," but I plan to very soon.
Each of those aforementioned books (with the exception of "Sanibel Flats" and the present review) is Doc Ford tales in the first person. This book is told from the third person. It is a somewhat difficult transition to make. The same is true for "Sanibel Flats"---I've discovered that from a cursory glance at it.
Doc Ford works so brilliantly in the first person, it's hard to accept anything else. Perhaps it sounds a bit odd, but it causes a little alienation to arise between the reader and the character that is Doc Ford. In other words, the reader does not feel as "inside" the character. Presumably this is intentional, but it is difficult coming from the more recent Ford tales to the earlier ones.
That aside, this isn't a typical Doc Ford novel either. It places a bigger spotlight on Tucker Gatrell (Ford's uncle) and his "friend" Joseph Egret. But it is a Ford adventure nonetheless, and it is a (...) good one at that. Randy Wayne White is an absolute master of this genre, and, as many reviewers state, is the definite heir apparent to the throne of John D. MacDonald/Travis McGee.
Definitely pick this one up at some point. Start from the beginning and work your way forward rather than vice-versa. And, definitely pick up his non-fictional works as well. They are absolutely amazing. I can't wait until his new non-fiction work is released in January.
Also, if you haven't already done so, look into anything by James Hall. I'll leave it up to you to find (come on, don't you want to find anything yourselves?!! j/k), but there is an absolutely fantastic Hall book that involves the very same subject matter of White's "Ten Thousand Islands." It is very good to read them back to back.
Enjoy!

Reinventing Florida
By E. Neily
As a historian who loves a good Florida story, this Randy Wayne White novel really tickled my funny bone. I was not at all put off that it was not a "typical" White novel, but enjoyed every minute of its bizarre twists and turns, its leg-pullin' blended with understandings of Florida's environmental systems. I found it captivating from start to finish. Having waded into the heart of the Fakahatchee Strand, slogged through mangrove swamps in Tampa Bay, and searched Florida archives, I can relate to much of White's tale. This is probably not a book for city-slickers, but by reading it Florida's northern transplants might learn a few lessons as to why Florida is so incredible.

Devil May Cry (Dark-Hunter, Book 11), by Sherrilyn Kenyon

For millennia, the ex-god turned Dark-Hunter Sin has sought to regain his powers and take revenge on Artemis. But now he has bigger fish―or in this case, demons―to fry. The lethal gallu that were buried by his pantheon are stirring, and they are hungry for human flesh. Their goal: To destroy mankind. Sin is the only one who can stop them…if a certain woman doesn't kill him first.

Enemies have always made strange bedfellows, but never more so than when the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Now a man who only knows betrayal must trust the one person most likely to hand him to the demons. Artemis may have stolen his godhood, but this one has stolen his heart. The only question is: Will she keep it…or feed it to those who want him dead?

From Publishers Weekly
Sin, a Sumerian fertility god turned Vegas casino owner, and Kat, the zealous servant of bossy Greek goddess Artemis, knock boots and kick butt in Kenyon's juicy 11th Dark-Hunter paranormal love-fest (after 2006's Dark Side of the Moon). Sin's been on the warpath for thousands of years, since Artemis stole his godhood. Sin's also upset about the disappearance of his twin brother, Zakar, and the imminent invasion of the vampiric Sumerian gallu, who plan to liberate the Dimme superdemons and destroy all humanity. Kat agrees to kill Sin before he kills Artemis, but instead the two fall in madcap love while trying to prevent Armageddon. It's just another day's work for the immortals, who act a lot like ordinary quarrelsome people with way cool superpowers. Though readers may need a scorecard to keep up with the cast, this series puts a contemporary spin on classical mythology that an increasing number of fans have found irresistible.

From Booklist
If revenge is a dish best served cold, Sin figures a few thousand years should make it good and frigid. He can't wait to kill Artemis for stealing his godhood, but first he has to deal with Earth-destroying gallu demons trying to escape their prison. As a preemptive strike, Artemis sends Katra to kill him. Realizing, though, that the gallu are the bigger threat, she willingly joins her enemy to stop them. Falling for him, however, could be the real problem. Longevity can be a series' best friend or worst enemy, yet Kenyon manages to find the middle ground in each installment in her Dark-Hunter series (immortal warriors guided by Artemis and pledged to defend humankind against vampires and other enemies), creating the wounded heroes, sarcastic humor, and adventurous romps paranormal-romance readers love while keeping any hint of sagging or self-indulgent plot at bay. As the mastermind behind an internationally popular, massively detailed fictional universe and overarching saga filling a dozen novels, Kenyon has written another fresh tale full to the brim with surprises. Davis, Nina C.

Hot as "Sin"
By qbinchik
Another winner in Kenyon's endlessly imaginative and sexy DArk-HUnter series. The 11th novel, "DEvil May Cry", is the story of Dark HUnter, Sin, an ex-Sumarian god turned DArk HUnter with the fate of the world in his hands, an axe to grind with the greek goddess, Artemis, and a serious growing crush on Artemis' daughter, Kat Agrotera. The story is the usual delicious caldron mix of gods, goddesses, daimons, charonte demons, gallu demons, dream hunters and the ultimate salvation of a broken, but hunky, DArk Hunter through the power of selfless and unconditional love.
YOu'll also get a tasty dose of Acheron (Ash) and further unraveling of his ongoing relationships with his Dark hunters, "Artie", and an important "new" character in his life. All and all, very entertaining. Enjoy !

Donovan knocked me off my feet again!
By Tracy Vest
Sam is a harried single mother of three. Her ex declared he was gay and skipped out before her youngest was even born, and has never paid child support. At a girl's night out, she gets a little tipsy and admits she would not mind being a "kept woman" to a wealthy man. One of her friends is the campaign manager for Jack, a womanizing politician in need of an image makeover since the last time her ran for office and made sexist remarks that lost him the female vote. She proposes that he pretend to be engaged to Sam to soften his image when he runs for the US Senate. Sam balks at first, then when she realizes how much she could gain financially as a result, she decides to do it for her children.

The press eats up the relationship between the two, which almost immediately turns physical. But Jack's former lover Christy is a journalist who will do anything to discredit the relationship to secure a better media job. As she schemes to locate the long lost husband to get Sam to admit the truth of the relationship, Sam and Jack are finding themselves falling for each other and wanting to stay together after the primary. Will Christy's scheming be successful?

As always, Donovan infuses her story with great bantering dialogue and lots of sensuality. Yes, the plot is recylced, but Donovan's skill with a written word makes this one a winner. The pair oozes sex appeal off every page, and make for one fun ride to the finish!

A fair read
By Gigilicious
This book started out interesting and then got bogged down by Ms. Bagshawe's repetitivenes.

The novel tells the story of Diana, a spolied and beautiful English woman who marries Ernie. Ernie is not an upper-class man, but has become quite wealthy as a corporate raider type in a big publishing firm. Together they move to New York City where Diana becomes a society wife while Ernie becomes even more ruthless in business. During the course of Ernie's business dealings, he meets Michael Cicero, a small publisher of children's books. He takes a dislike to Michael and vows to destroy him.

Meanwhle, Diana and Ernie's marriage falls apart and Diana is left humiliated and penniless. Somehow, she manages to fend for herself and begins working with Michael. A love affair of course ensues.

It makes for a fast read but is very much spoiled by repetitiveness. Bagshawe must provide at least a hundred descriptions of Diana's beauty, Michael's attraction to Diana, and Diana's attraction to Michael. This gets very old and makes the story drag on and on.

A fair try but is in desperate need of more imaginaion and good editing.

Fun read. Good romance.
By Bvpreadsalot
I've read this twice. Nice romantic build-up. Smart male and female leads with good banter. Sex done well. Children involved were real and added good interest. Well-written, well-told. I recommend this book.

Sanctuary: An Epic Novel of Thieves' World, by Lynn Abbey

From the Bestselling Fantasy Adventure Series, Thieves' World (tm)
Created by Robert Lynn Asprin & Lynn Abbey

Return To The City That Would Not Die!
Return To Thieves' World!
Return To Sanctuary!

Thieves' World was the bestselling and first of the shared world phenomenon, selling well over a million copies of anthologies detailing the exploits and intrigues of the high-born and low-born denizens of Sanctuary, a city that has seen many masters.

The Age of Ranke and the reign of Kadakithis, the occupation of the Beysib, the war of the gods and indeed the erstwhile Renaissance are now all in the past. Memories of heroes and villains, glory and savagery have all been relegated to the shadows of yesteryear as present-day residents once again apply themselves to the task at hand: survival.

Only Molin Torchholder, architect of Sanctuary’s glory and master of her secrets. knows the whole truth, but he is dying . . . He must hold on until he can pass along the city's hidden history of empires come and gone and blood shed for reason and naught. Aiding him are a lowly laborer named Cauvin, himself a survivor of one of the city's darkest moments, and a young boy named Bec.

So many secrets and so little time. And as Molin’s chronicles of the past unfold, even darker forces return, an evil that jeopardizes the very survival of a city that until now has always refused to die.

Sanctuary - An Epic Novel of Thieves' World ushers in a whole new age of tales, a whole new age of Thieves' World.

Amazon.com Review
The past and future of Sanctuary hang in the balance in this tale of intrigue, politics, magic, and sacrifice from veteran writer Lynn Abbey.

Life in the city of Sanctuary has moved on from the days of Jubal and Tempus, and the epic adventures of gods and men are already degrading into myth and superstition. Molin Torchholder, who carries the only living memories of these times, knows that the future of Sanctuary depends on preserving them. With assassins on his trail, Molin must prepare a successor to hold and protect the secret truths of Sanctuary. And Cauvin, a survivor of the cruel pits of the Bloody Hand, will have a series of difficult choices to make as he is drawn deeper into Molin's desperate struggle.

Readers new to Sanctuary (the core setting of numerous Thieves' World stories) will find enough backstory to make this novel accessible. Fans should be delighted with the wealth of historical references, new and familiar characters, and high adventure that Abbey weaves together. --Roz Genessee

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of Thieves' World will relish this sprawling epic, rich with sword and sorcery archetypes, from one of its cocreators. Those not so well-acquainted with the original 12 landmark collaborative anthologies, the subsequent graphic novels or game, however, may find it difficult to immediately access the magic. Touted as the book that unlocks the many secrets of Thieves' World, it relies on far too many history lessons to pad the plot; as a result, the action drags. Happily, Abbey's deft characterizations of Cauvin, a young man who once served the Bloody Hand, and Bec, his nine-year-old foster brother, an imaginative imp who adores him, brighten the story considerably. Both serve the ancient and wise Lord Molin Torchholder, who wishes to turn over his power and the city's secrets before he dies. Sanctuary, once a place where heroes reigned, is now a tawdry place where evils long thought dead have arisen. Lord Torchholder, mortally wounded in an assassination attempt, hopes Cauvin and little Bec, with the help of Torchholder's faithful friend, Soldt, will make Sanctuary a true haven again by fighting the bloodthirsty Dyareela, the Mother of Chaos, and her minions, who may include Cauvin's beloved childhood sweetheart, Leorin. "The Torch" is passed after much convoluted machination - and after 10 years, the gates to this famed city are reopened, assuring all that more adventures are just around the corner.

From Library Journal
When an assassination attempt leaves Molin Torchholder near death, the aging former priest of the war-god Vashanka and longtime possessor of the history and secrets of the city of Sanctuary seeks a successor to carry his burden of hidden knowledge. His search leads him not only to a youth named Cauvin, a survivor of an era when the vicious cult of the Bloody Hand ruled Sanctuary, but also to the realization that danger still threatens the city. The originator of the popular "Thieves' World" novels, the first shared-world fantasy environment, has returned to a world where vice and decadence coexist with heroism and self-sacrifice in a heady blend of atmosphere and adventure that should appeal to fans of the original series as well as newcomers. Highly recommended.

Keep your purse close and your dagger closer!
By Greg
I'm a big fan of the original series, Thieves' World, which ended with its twelfth book over a decade ago. When I'd finished the last page of the last book of Thieves' World, I'd experienced for the first time what I would come to judge all other books by. That bittersweet feeling of a triumphant conclusion to a great story mingled with slight sorrow at the parting with its characters.
So I started Sanctuary with apprehensions. One of them being that this book was written by a single author, while Thieves' World was a shared-world-anthology by multiple writers which created a uniqueness with universal appeal. The other issue that troubled me was that inside flap had informed me that my favorite characters were no longer around.
Just like any place a person comes to love, I wasn't sure I'd like going back when the very things I'd enjoyed the most had changed.
However, Abbey skillfully proves true that "the more things change the more they stay the same". As with any famous city, or in this case, infamous city, Sanctuary pulses with a life all her own. Previous generations leave their mark and the new rise up only to soon become part of the legend themselves.
Whether this is a return visit or your first time in this notorious city, be wary. The reader is quickly seduced by the sinful charm of Sanctuary's intriguingly seedy taverns like the Vulgar Unicorn, the shadowy allies of the Maze, and her dangerous ghettos such as the waterfront district.
If you're a fan of Thieves' World, you're sure to enjoy your return visit as much as I have. If you haven't read Thieves' World, this book is great introduction. It's a whole new story in a dark, old city. Abbey gives you just enough history so you'll learn a little of what your getting into while the veterans get a reminder.
Keep your money-purse close, dagger closer and trust few. Sanctuary has no mercy, even more so for visitors.

Thieves' World is back...
By Michael Valdivielso
and here is not just the first novel but the first book of the new generation of books about the old city. Molin Torchholder, survivor of wars, magic battles and all the dangers of the city itself, has killers on his tail. Good ones. With the help of the cursing Cauvin, the son of a stoneyard owner, and Cauvin's younger bother, Bec, Molin MIGHT be able to protect Sanctuary before he dies. But it'll be a close one.

I took away a few stars for many reasons. Cauvin cusses too frogging much, seems a tad too slow and, in a character driven plot line, it just seemed the author used his slowness to add a few hundred extra pages. The book is 533 pages long and much of it is Cauvin trying to think of what to do when not cussing his bad luck.

Also, there was a lot of information about the past - we learn about the Hand, but also about events that happened in the first books. A lot of names are dropped - Tempus, Jubal, Kadakithis and even Hakiem - which fans, old or new, may enjoy. But all these scenes seemed more like a data dump to me and slowed the action, what little there was, down. The story didn't even really start to move till the last few chapters.

It can't be helped - a story needs a starting point, a foundation. You have to cook the meal before you eat it. After all, this is the first book of the return to the world of 'Thieves' World' and I would suggest reading this one first. But it is still long, slightly boring in some parts and throws a lot of both old history and not-so-old history at you.

For fans it is a must, but once done I doubt you'll wish to re-read.

Welcome to the Relaunch!
By Rodney Meek
This volume is the relaunch to the Thieves World shared universe created by Abbey and Robert Asprin, which, as I recall, fired up around 1979 or so and ran through the '80s before sputtering to a halt. Thieves World was the precursor to such later series as George R.R. Martin's Wild Cards, C.J. Cherryh's Merovingen Nights, and Will Shetterly and Emma Bull's Liavek. The present volume picks up some years after the events of the twelfth installment of the original series. (In addition to the anthologies and mosaic novels, there seem to have been five stand-alone novels by the dreaded Janet and Chris Morris, against whom I continually rail, inasmuch as I hold their vile contributions to be directly responsible for killing both Thieves World and Merovingen Nights. Be that as it may, their five books evidently dealt with the despicable Tempus and his cronies and I believe they largely took place outside of the city of Sanctuary itself.)
Most everyone the longtime fan knew from back in the day is dead, fled, or vanished. Pretty much the only major figure left is an eighty-year-old Molin Torchholder, and due to circumstances he has to more or less dictate his memoirs in a nifty little ploy that allows the old school readers to dredge up memories of the first series while giving new readers a bit of background on the setting. This device makes it pretty apparent how wildly out of control the series had become and how critical it is to have a strong editorial hand (such as Martin) at the helm to reject the stupider ideas. My opinion is that very few of the authors could content themselves with "writing small" and with telling quiet little tales of interesting but limited and flawed characters. Very rapidly, after the first couple of books, every contributer wanted to turn their amps up to 11, and so each new character became deadlier, angrier, and more brutal than the last, and each of them seemed designed specifically as grudge monsters who were meant only to humiliate or eliminate the pre-existing characters. Not to mention that the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, as it were, rode through the city so often that it became ludicrous. Authors began to show off and have gods duking it out in the street, or had the city invaded again and again by awesome new and never-before-suspected threats from all quarters of the globe, or tossed in legions of the undead or bands of invincible and sneering warriors. In hearing Molin relate the whole sorry mess, it just really seems ludicrous in retrospect.
This particular addition to the milieu is a necessary but somewhat awkward bridge between the decades-old material accumulated over the first run of the series and the new tales that follow in the newest collection of short stories (entitled Turning Points) that has just become available. (Another volume, First Blood, will be rolling out soon.) Quite likely, it can be skipped, and it may only really be compelling reading for continuity devotees who need to acquire each Thieves World volume for their collections.
Now that Abbey has cleaned the slate by jumping the series into the future so that everyone has keeled over or wandered off, Thieves World can enjoy a fresh start and avoid the mistakes of the past. In Cauvin and Bec, the Thieves World setting has a couple of interesting characters to serve as a starting point, with the help of some of the supporting cast, such as Soldt. Here's hoping that Abbey can prevent future contributors under control so that Sanctuary will not again implode under the weight of overly ambitious and byzantine plots and the hordes of grandiose heroes and villains.
