From Publishers Weekly
After her heralded but somewhat overwritten first novel, Tully, Simons has sharpened her craftsmanship to produce this suspenseful work about four friends at Dartmouth College whose close relationship is coming apart. The disintegration doesn't appear mortal, but it is. During a cold Thanksgiving weekend and its aftermath, Kristina, Jim, Conni and Albert study, play and occasionally sleep together, passionately addicted to each other's company. When Kristina's nude and frozen body is found in a snowbank, having been concealed there for some days, young small-town detective Spencer O'Malley investigates her death. He is drawn into the group's games and lies just as he was drawn to Kristina's compelling liveliness when he met her the day before she was killed. Why did her best friends fail to report her missing? Their answers to his fervent questions reveal a network of hidden secrets and jealousies that have long existed among them. But the hardly surprising solution to the crime doesn't appear until three years later, when the full significance of the title becomes clear. The narrative has striking similarities to the events in Donna Tartt's The Secret History, but Simons is not as fluent a writer, nor does the plot carry the philosophical resonance of Tartt's more sophisticated work. Yet Simons handles her characters and setting (both the New Hampshire campus and the moneyed neighborhoods of Greenwich, Conn.) with a certain skill, creating mystery from the ordinary, protected lives of these Ivy League kids, slowly peeling away their deceptions to reveal denial, cowardice and chilling indifference. In doing so, she tells an often engrossing story. BOMC selection; audio rights to Brilliance Audio; author tour.

From Library Journal
At 21, Kristina Kim is a senior at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She is beautiful, pleasant, and the star player on the women's basketball team. Surrounded by her close friends Jim Shaw, Conni Tobias, and Albert Maplethorpe, Kristina has her whole life before her. But a week after Thanksgiving her body is found frozen in the deep snow near her dormitory. Spencer Patrick O'Malley, the detective in charge, coincidentally met Kristina shortly before her death and even had a date with her the week after the holiday. As Spencer conducts his investigation, he uncovers many peculiarities; for example, why did none of her trusted friends report Kristina missing in the nine days previous to the discovery of her body? When Spencer learns that Kristina died leaving $9 million to her friends, he digs deeper and finds a frightful secret. Simons's (Tully, LJ 4/15/94) characterizations are excellent, and she quickly draws the reader deeply into the nuances of the story. Highly recommended for fiction collections.?Maria A. From Booklist
Simons, author of Tully (1994), continues her fascination with the importance of friendship in young adulthood and its ability to supplant an impaired family. Beautiful, brainy, and athletic 21-year-old Kristina Sinclair should be having the time of her life at Dartmouth College. However, when she is found dead after one of her midnight jaunts (walking naked along the length of a wall on a snow-covered bridge), the drama of her calamitous past comes to life. Detective Spencer O'Malley, infatuated with Kristina shortly before her death, embarks on a mission to uncover the mysteries surrounding her existence and sudden demise. When he realizes that Kristina's body was left in the snow for days and none of her close friends found her absence alarming, they become potential murder suspects. Although the bond between Kristina and her friends is not fully developed, Simons compensates with an intensive and enthralling treatment of the tragic incident that derails their lives. Liz Rifken

Riveting novel!
By rebelmomof2
This is one of the few books this summer where I found that I just couldn't put down. This is an engrossing novel filled with twists and turns that it leaves the reader anxious to know what happened till the final page has been turned. Even then, the story still haunts the reader.

This novel focuses on four friends ~ Kristina, a beautiful basketball player, Conni, her former roommate, Jim, her boyfriend and Albert, Conni's boyfriend. Kristina is found dead and the novel focuses on the unraveling of secrets among the four friends. It is a chilling portrayal of three human beings who are indifferent to the fact that their friend is dead. It's a creepy novel ~~ with dark undertones. The dark undertones has to do with apathy and indifference of another human being's plight in life or in Kristina's case, death. Cossetted and spoiled, these undergraduates in a priviledged college fought the investigator in the murder case in his attempts to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding Kristina's death.

This book will creep you out ~~ it will annoy you because Simons shows the worst of human nature. It will leave you twisting in your seat as you think of one scenario or another till you are ended up with surprises that you didn't think of. It is a riveting book ~~ perfect for those lazy summer days at the beach or sitting in your hammock. If you're looking for an intense suspense novel ~~ this one would be it!

Interesting, subtly chilling and thoroughly entertaining
By A Customer
As most students reading books for their final English Studies I wished to get through this book as quickly as possible...and yet once started I could not put it down. It has pace and Simmons' has created thoroughly believable and recognisable characters. The lead, Spencer Patrick O'Malley, creates in himself such a sense of sympathy that it is impossible not to to relate to him and indeed the rest of the characters follow suit. Yet of all the good points of this novel the finest would have to be the ending - for in what has become a world of cliched happy endings Simmons' has instead granted us a glance into the darkest side of the human spirit.

Excellent To The Core
By Heather Negahdar
If you've read Tully and like it,then you'll definitely cherish this lovely book by Paullina Simons. I like the way she gets her readers so emotionally involved with the characters. These youngsters in Red Leaves, Kristina, Constance, Albert and Jim felt like my family, or they could have been my children for that matter. I felt especially close to Kristina, the main character as I felt her pain and her cold lonliness. With a cleverly crafted detective storyline, it has the capacity to keep you up all night long until you've turned the last page. After you've turned that last page, you can't get those characters out of your head. If you haven't bought it yet........get it.......it's worth every penny. Thanks Ms Simons

Ian Rankin Paints With Words...
By Vicky Shultz
There are two sides of Edinburgh, Scotland. There's the side that tourists see: the city of Grayfriar's Bobby, of the annual Summer Festival, of the quaint pubs and the scenic castle sitting on a hill called Arthur's Throne. Then there's the other side of Edinburgh, the domain of Detective Inspector John Rebus. This Edinburgh is one of boarded up housing tenements inhabited by the hopeless, a city of AIDS ridden junkies and prostitutes, of deals made in back alleys at midnight amid violence and sometimes death.
Inspector Rebus is sent to investigate what appears to be a junkie's death in an abandoned housing estate. The man's body is laid out spread-eagle with Satanic symbols and candles decorating the room. While the other cops are convinced it's just another all-too-familiar overdose victim, Rebus gets the inkling there is more to it than meets the eye. A young female witness is found and tells Rebus that the last words the dead man said were "Hide! Hide!". Assisted by his protegé, Rebus explores the dark side of Edinburgh, seeking justice for a young man too easily dismissed both in life and in death.
Ian Rankin is the best mystery writer I've ever read. The character of Inspector John Rebus is melancholy, brooding, cynical, funny, intelligent, a workaholic and a perfectionist. He's both addicted and repelled by his work. Being a copper has absorbed his entire life. Rankin's style has been described as "Tartan Noir" and the label is fitting. But to think this book and the series it's part of are dreary would be a mistake. Rankin takes the reader to the depths of dark grittiness, then surprises with bright flashes of humor. Watch for tongue in cheek touches, such as a detective named Holmes and a superior named Watson. Do yourself a good turn and read not only HIDE & SEEK, but the entire Inspector Rebus series.

Excellent police procedural/mystery by under-rated author
By A Customer
I am a big fan of Rebus - and of anything Ian Rankin writes. Rebus is a believable cop - with lots of personality quirks and a not-so-perfect "home" life. The descriptions of his work environment and the politics involved in being a cop (in any country) are dead-on. Scotland comes alive - its weather, moods, citizens, crime. I highly recommend this book to any reader who is looking for something deep, different, and compelling.

A peek under the kilt of a nasty side of Edinburgh!
By Paul Weiss
The plot is certainly simple enough on the face of it. Inspector Rebus is assigned to investigate the death of a junkie in his run down tenement squat. The victim's body has been obviously arranged after death in the shape of a crucifix. Candles surround the corpse and the crude pentagram on the wall is so fresh that the paint is still tacky. At first blush, the cause of death appears to be a simple heroin overdose taken in the throes of some sort of odd satanic ritual but the medical examiner's autopsy discloses something entirely different. What now appears to be a murder by lacing a junkie's fix with rat poison takes Inspector Rebus on a tour of the seamy underbelly of a gritty Edinburgh that you certainly won't find in the Michelin five star travel guide.

Junkies, addicts and pushers; gay and straight prostitution; dog fighting; illegal high stakes gaming and brothels; corruption in the police force, on the bench and at the bar; alcoholics and drunkards - they all make their way onto the stage of "Hide and Seek" in a novel that seems determined to portray Scotland as a bleak and unrelentingly dreary den of sin and iniquity. On the face of it, the novel has the flavour of a Michael Connelly police procedural but the comparison stops right there. Rankin has provided little in the way of descriptions of dogged police work and the pursuit of clues and has focused on dialogue and character development almost to the exclusion of everything else.

So how does one rank that? From the point of view of looking for a great police procedural or an engaging mystery, I was singularly unimpressed (two stars at best). But the dialogue and the characterization was first rate. The clever, appealing, understated British style of wit and humour was apparent throughout the entire novel despite its dark setting (unquestionably worth four stars). I suppose we've got to give it an overall rating of three stars and try another entry in the series to see if there are better pickings as far as plot goes.

Garric or-Reise was born the son of an innkeeper in Barca's Hamlet on the Isle of Haft, but through valor and determination became first a prince and then the Regent and successor to the feeble Valence III, King of the Isles. But the Kingdom is weak, its rule barely extending past the island of Ornifal.
The Isles need a strong king to bring unity, because danger is coming. Magic is stronger now than at any time since the fall of the Old Kingdom in a cataclysm of uncontrolled magic. Evil is growing in the spaces beyond the world, waiting to complete the destruction begun a millennium before. Only if the Isles are united into a strong New Kingdom can humanity survive.
Garric has sworn to become a true Lord of the Isles. Standing with him are his sister, Sharina; his friend and Sharina's lover, the shepherd Cashel; and Cashel's sister, the weaver-witch Ilsa. They have been to Hell and back together in their quest.
The four friends and the armies of the Kingdom have undertaken a Royal Progress to renew the bonds of fealty among the Isles. Now they come to Sandrakkan, which fought a long and bloody war with Haft less than a generation ago.
On Sandrakkan, Wilduf's Countess, Balila, schemes with her court wizard to destroy the boy king from the hated isle of Haft. Strange evils lurk on demon-haunted Volita, and she will wake them all if necessary to make her husband the new King of the Isles.
Rich with action, guile, and heroism in the face of dangers both physical and moral, Master of the Cauldron stands alone or as part of a ground-breaking fantasy epic.

From Booklist
The sixth volume of the imposing Lord of the Isles saga involves a royal progress by Garric, aspiring ruler of the Isles. Travel with him involves an army and a fleet, both of which Drake renders with his usual skill at depicting warriors. Also with Garric are his sister, Sharina; her lover, Cashel; and the witch Ilna, who is Cashel's sister. Ilna isn't particularly sympathetic but seems almost saintly compared with Countess Balila of Sandrakkan, an island that has a long-standing feud with Garric's home island, Haft. Moreover, Balila unscrupulously commands considerable and uncontrolled magic with which to fight Sandrakkan's battles. These Drake draws with great, gritty realism on both material and magical planes, and Hell quite literally breaks loose on occasion. The audience for this kind of fantasy saga should prove large and ongoing, and for this volume, at least, it will be well deserved. Roland Green

I want my time back!
By Anne
What a waste of time!
Each book after the first is basically the same, everyone get separated, has their adventures, solves their particular problem and then they all come back together. A few new characters have been added but very little has happened to move the story along. I am certainly glad these books were purchased used, in paperback. At least all I have lost is some time. All six books will be going to Goodwill...they should most likely go in the trash.

Dozois finds good sf stories for his readers.
By A Customer
Dozois's third Bluejay annual (1986, for 1985 work) follows the same format as his second. You can read no other sf-related book in a given year and still have a very good idea of what is happening in the current sf scene. Dozois believes that short fiction is the heart of the genre; it takes as much originality to execute an effective story as it does a genre novel, which generally spins out an equivalent concept at greater length. Moreover, the concentation of the short form forces writers into a concise presentation of their material. In an age of elephantine media-based novel series, that's a pleasure. This anthology picks up 24 stories, several of them long. I most liked Karen Joy Fowler's "The Lake Was Full of Artificial Things," a haunting meditation on Vietnam in which a woman interacts with a virtual version of a man she knew who died in the war. Another very good story included here, which won an award, is Frederik Pohl's "Fermi and Frost," a less satiric than usual portrait of surviving beyond armageddon. Additional stories I liked here include Robert Silverberg's long "Sailing to Byzantium," another award-winner in which Byzantium turns out not what it seems to be; Kim Stanley Robinson's "Green Mars," which became the basis for his Mars trilogy; S. C. Sykes's "Rockabye Baby," a moving story about a severely injured man who enters an experimental program to regenerate his body; and Lucius Shepard's "A Spanish Lesson," a picaresque mood piece about an expatriate American in Europe who finally confronts his own shallowness. Two other award winners reprinted are Nancy Springer's "Out of All Them Bright Stars" and James Blaylock's "Paper Dragons." One of the tensions in genre fiction of this period was the conflict between the cyberpunkers and the rest of the writers. Robinson was accused of being a fuddy-duddy for not joining the punker bandwagon. I think he had the last laugh.

And Dozois Makes Three
By John M. Ford
This is the third volume in Gardner Dozois's Year's Best Science Fiction series. Readers and libraries alike realized he was destined to require some serious shelf space. It begins with the by-now-expected summation of significant developments in SF during the previous year (1985). Each of the 24 stories is introduced with a concise description of its place among the author's other works.

Five of the stories that I really liked:

Michael Swanwick and William Gibson come together to create "Dogfight." Deke is an up-and-coming competitor in flying virtual biplanes to win cash and a reputation. He starts with nothing and would give anything to out-fly the reigning champion.

John Crowley's "Snow" introduces a new, high-tech method of remembering a loved one after they die. It has its complications, both technical and emotional.

Robert Silverberg's "Sailing to Byzantium" introduces us to a man from the 1980s who must cope with society tens of thousands of years in the future. We learn this new world along with him as he slowly discovers who and what is real. And what can be done about it.

Pat Cadigan's "Roadside Rescue" is a brief tale about a man whose car breaks down and is repaired through the generosity of an alien visitor. Perhaps generosity isn't quite the right word...

S. C. Sykes' "Rockabye Baby" follows the post-accident recovery of a man who is mostly paralyzed. We learn about his life "Before" and what he must and chooses to give up. This is an emotion-driven story in which many characters struggle not to show their feelings. It is not for faint hearts or dry eyes.

This is another very good collection and is highly recommended. It maintains the high quality of the first two volumes in the series. Get it, read it, enjoy it!

From Publishers Weekly
The blunt Agatha Raisin, with her stocky figure and "bearlike eyes," makes for an unusual sleuth, and her fifth outing (after Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley, 1995) certainly makes for an unusual adventure. The former public relations powerhouse who left London and a career for a simpler life in a Cotswold country village is about to marry her handsome next-door neighbor. But the wedding ceremony is halted mid-vow by the arrival of Jimmy Raisin, the husband Agatha fervently hoped was dead and has neglected to mention to James Lacey, the fastidious, upstanding citizen currently waiting to tie the knot. Even less convenient than a living husband who interrupts your wedding is one who, shortly thereafter, turns up dead in a ditch in the immediate neighborhood. Naturally, Agatha and James top the suspect list. But the dead Jimmy was a down-and-out alcoholic who had been known to practice a bit of blackmail. Agatha and James track down some of his victims, who have a distressing tendency to die shortly after being questioned by the two. With bodies stacking up and James refusing to marry Agatha (even though she has already sold her cottage), the atmosphere becomes nicely tense. Beaton, who also pens the Hamish MacBeth series, gleefully creates one excruciating situation after another for her indomitable heroine to endure.

From Library Journal
Agatha Raisin (as in Agatha Raisin and the Walkers of Dembley, LJ 3/1/95) had long presumed her first husband dead when she married her attractive neighbor, but then Jimmy Raison suddenly turns up. When someone murders him that same night, Agatha becomes the prime suspect. A great series.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
In the seventh entry in this cozy mystery series, former public-relations woman now Cotswold resident Agatha Raisin is about to be married to her next-door neighbor, James Lacey. Then Agatha's long-absent but undivorced husband turns up. That night he turns up dead. Although Agatha and James agree the marriage is off, they decide to team up, as they've done in the past, to solve the murder and clear themselves as suspects. One of the interesting things about this series is how unappealing the abrasive Agatha can be. She's vain, snide, and self-pitying on a regular basis. All that adds up to a heroine who is also very human, and perhaps that--we identify with her even if we don't always like her--is one of the elements that keeps readers coming back. Another is Beaton's plotting. Like snack food, it's fast, tasty, and leaves you satisfied, if only temporarily. That's all right, though. Beaton is quick; more Raisin should be along shortly. An enjoyable and easy read
By Elizabeth Harris
This was such a fast reading easy read. There are multiple issues with the main character and 2 of her friends. Although Agatha Raisin is a series, you don't have to read previous books to know the relationship the characters have with each other. I've read almost all of the Agatha Raisin series and have enjoyed all of the books. The characters seem "human" with needs, desires, fears that seem normal.

Agatha Raisin is unique
By Anne Melvin
I have enjoyed the character development in this series. It helps to read the Agatha Raisin books in sequence although it is not necessary to enjoy each story. Agatha and James are complex characters and M.C. Beaton does an excellent job in their delineation. The villagers in this cozy mystery are lovable and reading the book is like living in a small village.
The plot of this book was interesting and the action well-paced. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. The relationship of James and Agatha has reached a different level in this story. Being middle-aged, independent and set in their ways, their feelings for each other are bound to be mixed. They are likable and you care what happens to them.

Cannibal Killers, by Moira Martingale

It is a crime that shocks and stuns more than any other. It is the ultimate in criminal depravity. It runs like a blood-red thread through novels like The Silence of the Lambs.

Now, take a grim and terrifying journey into the world of the cannibal killer...

Ed Gein the twisted trophy hunter and role model for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, who liked to keep his victim's lips in a small bowl.

Issei Sagawa a real natural-born killer, celebrated in song by the Rolling Stones and toasted by the Japanese art world afer he killed and ate a Dutch co-ed.

Jeffrey Dahmer the Milwaukee Murderer who kept souvenirs from most of his 17 victims, including three human heads in his refrigerator.

Andrei Chikatilo history's worst cannibal killer who delighted in boiling and eating sawn-off body parts of his victims, often not bothering to kill them before the mutilation began.

A chilling look at history's most repugnant criminals, Cannibal Killers is a horrifying story too shocking to believe-- except that it's true.

Very well put together
By A Customer
I disagree with the negative reviews (except about the "harrowing" pictures promise on the cover being bogus, but that is not the author's fault.)
I found her discussion of cannibalism in general to be interesting and enlightening. The psychology is not boring, but engaging. True, if you want in depth on each killer's story, this is not the book for you (it is only about 300 pages), but as an overview, it rules. Also, I love her(?) [Moira] theory on the origins of vampires and werewolves.

Gives False Info
By C. Stesen
I'm about half way through this book and some of the info is incorrect and is leaving me thinking "maybe i shouldn't finish it because of the false info". I caught most of it the Ed Gein Chapter. Ed Gein has explained quite a few times that he was not a Cannibal. He explained he liked to wear the skin and use the bones to make items but said he never ate any of the bodies from the graves he dug up or the recently killed ones. Also The book says His father died, than his mother, than his brother in a forest fire. I've read almost everywhere else that his father died, than his brother in a barn fire that Ed may have caused. This put a strain on his mother and she died a year later. Then he boarded up her room and most of the house. Its just little facts like this that make me think the author may have written the book just so she could release a book. It doesnt seem like her heart was in it like the other books i've read about cannibals and serial killers. I would say spend the extra money to get a book that goes more into detail and gives facts instead of guesses...

It was disturbing yet held my attention throughout the end.
By A Customer
The book described in detail about Dahmer, Gein and others. It was extremely graphic but the need for that was apparent. It was not glorifing what was done. It was scaring you to death. Things like this could happen to anyone anywhere. I can't say it was an enjoyable book. Nothing of that matter can be "enjoyable" but it did hold my interest. I could not put it down. When I did it was minutes later I'd pick it back up,

Really enjoyed this book.
By A Customer
While this book doesn't have the most frugal recipes I've ever seen, it does provide a way to eat gourmet food for a lot less than our family would have to spend if we went out for dinner at a nice restaurant. I don't use any of the recipes for our regular family dinner fare (we're on too tight of a budget for that), but I feel Cheapskate in the Kitchen taught me how to prepare better special occasion and company meals that won't break my budget as much as those special meals did before.
In the introduction of the book the author writes: "What kind of book is this, you ask? ... This is a book that will teach you how to get from Spaghetti-O's to Scallopini alla Marsala, culinarily speaking. It's for those who don't have the knowledge to be Cordon Bleu chefs, let alone the money to purchase expensive ingredients ... This is a book for those who yearn to prepare and present meals with all the style of Martha Stewart, the talent of Julia Child, the delightful wit of Graham Kerr and the enthusiasm of Jeff Smith. It's for those who go on day after day, secretly wishing and yearning to be fine gourmet cooks, but find themselves stuck in the macaroni-and-cheese rut."
Since that pretty welll describes me when I first read the book, I guess the author hit her target because I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have to admit that we still eat mac-and-cheese quite often, but I now have a better concept of how to prepare more gourmet-type meals than I did before reading this book. Plus, the book itself is so inexpensive, I think it was definitely worth adding to my bookshelf.

Maybe a better title would be "The Cheapskate Gourmet"
By A Customer
If you're looking for inexpensive "everyday" family-style recipes and ideas, this probably isn't the book for you. BUT ... if you're looking for gourmet recipes without the usual accompanying gourmet price tag, you might feel you've hit the jackpot with this inexpensive little gem. I felt when reading this book that I'd stumbled upon a small gourmet cooking school for beginners rather than a book for saving money in the kitchen. I think the title is maybe a little bit misleading. Since most of Mary Hunt's books deal with living inexpensively, the idea of a "cheapskate in the kitchen" brings to my mind someone who's trying to keep their food budget down to $30 a week or something along those lines. This book won't help those people save money, but it would definitely help someone save a few pennies if they go out to eat a lot and would like to learn to prepare gourmet quality foods at home.

Want to waste your money? Buy this book...
By Amazon Customer
This format and the content of this book are tedious and unentertaining. Every single money saving tip in here can be obtained from internet frugal sites for free. And on top of that, the recipes are ridiculous. Not only are they not family friendly, you could blow your entire food budget for the week purchasing the speciality items to make just one of the meals. Want to feed your kids Sea Scallops, Pheasant and Prosciutto wrapped asparagus on the cheap? Well then you might buy this book? But if you want to cook these things on a regular basis anyway there are much better recipes and cookbooks out there for gourmet meals such as this so you've pretty much wasted your money anyway you go with this book.

Wish I could find more, series just seemed to end......

Parts of the story were good, especially the end, but not enough to recommend it.
By Jane
The middle section was too drawn out with too much vague and unsuccessful investigation going on. I felt the ending was creative and different and it felt good. However, I wish the author would have added more at the end, telling what was going to happen to Sabina. Sabina did something evil, and I felt the story was unfinished by not having justice for her. I also would have liked to see the conversations and actions between Mal and his gypsy people at the end concerning their betrayal and separation.

CAUTION SPOILERS:
Some other areas I had problems with follow. Grace's strange nocturnal journeys into the woods at night were never explained well enough for me. It was hard for me to understand how Claire could date someone for several months, invite him to her home and then be so traumatized by sex that she quits her dream job and returns to her small home town. Yes, a rape might do that, but from someone she had been dating for so long? I would have preferred a stronger reason for leaving her city job. I think she was wrong to be mad at Mal because he didn't tell her he was a werewolf earlier in their relationship.

Sexual language: mild to moderate. Number of sex scenes: four. Setting: present day Lake Bluff, Georgia and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Copyright: 2007. Genre: paranormal romance.

A pretty howling good time (Spoilers)
By Leah
Lori Handeland has broken through a million stereotypes that are common in romance novel heroines, and she has definitely done so again with "Hidden Moon," her seventh novel in her Nightcreature series. For that, I applaud her.

Claire Kennedy is the daughter of Lake Bluff, Georgia's, former mayor. She had been in Atlanta trying to make a living as a journalist, until she was raped by a man she was dating. In order to turn her life back around and escape her fear, she goes back home to take up the mantle her father had and become mayor herself (this isn't really logical but it's explained as a normal thing in a small town).

When the Full Moon Festival, an annual celebration in Lake Bluff, approaches, strange things begin to happen. Claire's assistant has hired a group of Gypsies to entertain the townspeople and tourists for the celebration and Claire finds herself attracted to the group's leader, Malachi Cartwright. However, a tourist disappears and wolves are being heard in the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains, which is uncommon since no wolves roam around in the area. Claire's job is constantly being thwarted and she has to deal with the skeptical people who don't think she can handle the job. Also, she's trying to overcome the rockiness of her relationship with her best friend and the town's sheriff, Grace.

"Hidden Moon" is chalk full of mystery, myth, and a little spookiness. When I say that Claire isn't a typical heroine, I mean it. She's able to stand on her own two feet when confronted with her rapist, and she seriously knows how look out for her survival (I won't say how, but trust me, it's a doozy). Her relationship with Malachi is also very sweet-- he knows she's been hurt and actually helps her overcome her pain with gentleness and understanding, even physically defending her honor. What a guy! Even though I don't approve of his constant disappearing (something all of Handeland's heroes tend to do) he's still really sweet.

The bad guys are similiar to those in B-rated movies and when the baddies are revealed it's a little Scooby Doo-ish (I can actually hear Fred saying "Why it's so and so from the old amusement park!"); there is also a "big misunderstanding" thrown in as well, but "Hidden Moon" has some wonderful surprises. And the cover's beautiful.

Can't wait for Grace's book, which comes out next year.

The Texas Rangers: Wearing the Cinco Peso, 1821-1900, by Mike Cox

Texas writer/historian Mike Cox explores the inception and rise of the famed Texas Rangers. Starting in 1821 with just a handful of men, the Rangers' first purpose was to keep settlers safe from the feared and gruesome Karankawa Indians, a cannibalistic tribe that wandered the Texas territory. As the influx of settlers grew, the attacks increased and it became clear that a much larger, better trained force was necessary.  From their tumultuous beginning to their decades of fighting outlaws, Comanche, Mexican soldados and banditos, as well as Union soldiers, the Texas Rangers became one of the fiercest law enforcement groups in America.  In a land as spread-out and sparsely populated as the west itself, the Rangers had unique law-enforcement responsibilities and challenges. The story of the Texas Rangers is as controversial as it is heroic. Often accused of vigilante-style racism and murder, they enforced the law with a heavy hand. But above all they were perhaps the defining force for the stabilization and the creation of Texas. From Stephen Austin in the early days through the Civil War, the first eighty years of the Texas Rangers is nothing less then phenomenal, and the efforts put forth in those days set the foundation for the Texas Rangers that keep Texas safe today.

From Publishers Weekly
Formerly the stuff of dime-novel legend, Texas Rangers have since fallen into disrepute as vigilantes who were primarily occupied with murdering Native Americans and hunting escaped slaves. Texas journalist Cox retains much of the old admiration however, and has produced a thick compendium of gunfights, pursuits and general skullduggery that contains everything anyone would want to know about the Rangers, the "mounted irregulars operating with government authority to meet an exigency." That exigency was the Native American presence in the rich Mexican territory of Texas. Early local governments quickly recruited young men to secure the land for American colonists. The early Rangers had to provide their own horses and arms, but there was no shortage of pugnacious adventurers. There was always a shortage of money, however, and governments rarely financed more than a year of service. Only in 1874 did the state government set up a permanent force. Cox mines contemporary newspapers, letters and diaries to cobble together a journalistic account that-except for the occasional detour into politics (invariably about raising money for the Rangers)-consists overwhelmingly of sketches and human interest stories. Old West buffs will enjoy the steady stream of anecdotes, but readers looking for a thoughtful or critical history of law enforcement along the Texas frontier will be left unsatisfied.

From Booklist
Cox breathes new life into the legendary Texas Rangers in this lively, enlightening history of one of the oldest, most esteemed law-enforcement agencies in America. Founded in 1821 in order to protect settlers from the fearsome Karankawa Indians, the force’s members and the scope of their mission grew in proportion to the sprawling territory they helped patrol. Though the threat of Indian attacks eventually abated, the Rangers fought an array of new enemies, including Mexican bandits and Union soldiers. Revered and reviled for their vigilante brand of justice, the Rangers constituted a law unto themselves on the raw Texas frontier. Cox, former spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, does an admirable job of documenting the first 80 years of this often controversial but always intriguing organization. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
"Mike Cox has a unique background for presenting the checkered history of the Rangers. During several years as a spokesman for the Texas Department of Safety, he had access to detailed records and experienced first-hand the mystique that clings to this fabled law enforcement body. Though he gives us the flashes of glory, he does not flinch from the dark side of the Rangers' past."--Elmer Kelton, Texas legend and author of The Texas Rangers novel series

“A richly detailed and sweeping historical narrative. . . . This modern masterpiece does full justice to both the reality and the myth of the Texas Rangers---a great organization of which I was honored to be a part for 27 years.”---Joaquin Jackson, Texas Ranger (Ret) -- Author of One Ranger: A Memoir

"Big, brawny and proud as the people who created Texas, Mike Cox's The Texas Rangers, Wearing the Cinco Peso, 1821-1900 is a welcome addition to Texas history.  I enjoyed it thoroughly."---Stephen Coonts, New York Times bestselling author of The Traitor

"Anyone who reads this book will feel they have found a new electrifying country that they never knew existed. That's how different Texas was in the early days of the Texas Rangers.”--Thomas Fleming New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Trial of Robert E. Lee

Good overview and great anecdotes !!

“The Texas Rangers” by Mike Cox

Mike Cox does a pretty good job with this topic. He explains that “rangering” first became prominent in Texas about 1821 and went through several flavors before the men of this ilk were officially referred to as “Texas Rangers”. He explains this was due to the progression of Texas from Mexican state playing host to Gringo settlers to independent republic to member of the United States to member of the Confederate States to reinstatement as a member of the United States.
He plods through it all detailing how the goals and responses of rangers changed depending on fluctuating threats to the frontier, whether Comanches, Comancheros, Apaches, Mexican bandits and military, Americano outlaws, cattle rustlers, train robbers, Labor strikers and assorted ne'er-do-wells. Thankfully, he injects enough thrilling storyline about John Wesley Hardin, Sam Bass and other dime-novel luminaries to keep it all interesting.
Cox stops at 1900 (though the Texas Rangers are still a functioning group today) which is probably a good stopping point as the “Wild” had pretty much been taking out of the Wild West then and the frontier was mostly just memories.

The vulnerable Texas Ranger
By DickStanley.
I came away from independent historian Mike Cox's new classic Ranger history with a new view of the fabled outfit, the samurai of early Texas. There's less of their invincibility here than vulnerability. Despite committing occasional injustices, they seem often to have been short of manpower, money and even modern weapons yet would charge into a fight they couldn't reasonably win and only after taking as well as inflicting casualties, withdraw. They usually were effective, but they usually paid a price.

One review I saw complained that Cox's tale is too bloody. It is graphic in describing the appalling things the Commanche and other maurauding Indians liked to do to settler families, but no more so I don't think, than some recent historical fiction. More so, however, than professional historian Walter Prescott Webb's 1935 classic that Cox has updated with skill and thorough documentation. Webb, for instance, says on page 313 only that Ranger D.W.H. Bailey was slain in July, 1874, trying to get water for a thirsting company under Indian siege. Cox tells us that Bailey's name was Dave and quotes a comrade that the Indians killed him in sight of the others by cutting off his nose, ears, hands, arms, etc. and eating his flesh until their leader dispatched him with a tomahawk. It helps you understand why the early Rangers tended to shoot Indians on sight. When the savages finally were subdued, there were still Anglo and Mexican murderers and border bandits to fight and the Rangers kept charging, and sometimes losing, but were always ready to charge again.

Cox is finishing a second volume to bring the Rangers up to the 21st century, something Webb didn't live to do, and it should make a dandy story, or rather series of stories, which is the way this first volume is put together. Rangers are mainly detectives, nowadays, but their mystique lives on in their holstered but cocked .45s. I'll look forward to No. 2 while recommending this one to anyone interested in Texas. As my Corsicana grandfather used to say, "It's a peach."
