The Dream-Hunter (A Dream-Hunter Novel, Book 1), by Sherrilyn Kenyon

In the ethereal world of dreams, there are champions who fight to protect the dreamer and there are demons who prey on them...

Arik is such a predator. Condemned by the gods to live eternity without emotions, Arik can only feel when he's in the dreams of others. For thousands of years, he's drifted through the human unconscious, searching for sensation. Now he's finally found a dreamer whose vivid mind can fill his emptiness.

Dr. Megeara Kafieri watched her father ruin himself and his reputation as he searched to prove Atlantis was real. Her deathbed promise to him to salvage his reputation has now brought her to Greece where she intends to prove once and for all that the fabled island is right where her father said it was. But frustration and bad luck dog her every step. Especially the day they find a stranger floating in the sea. His is a face she's seen many times.... in her dreams.

What she doesn't know is that Arik holds more than the ancient secrets that can help her find the mythical isle of Atlantis. He has made a pact with the god Hades: In exchange for two weeks as a mortal man, he must return to Olympus with a human soul. Megeara's soul.

With a secret society out to ruin her expedition, and mysterious accidents that keep threatening her life, Megeara refuses to quit. She knows she's getting closer to Atlantis and as she does, she stumbles onto the truth of what Arik really is.

For Arik his quest is no longer simple. No human can know of a Dream-Hunter's existence. His dream of being mortal has quickly turned into his own nightmare and the only way to save himself will be to sacrifice the very thing he wanted to be human for. The only question is, will he?

Chapter OneSantorini, Greece, 1996”my kingdom for a gun.”Shaking his head at Geary’s hostile words, Brian calmly opened the car door for her as she approached their small taxi that waited in the heart of the crowded Greek thoroughfare. “You don’t have a kingdom.”She paused on the sidewalk to glare at him. Given the fury in her system, she couldn’t believe he’d dare point out the obvious to her. She’d been known to verbally let serious blood when only half this riled. Truly, the man had no sense of self-preservation. “And I don’t have a gun--looks like I’m shit out of luck all the way around, huh?”Still, he was his ever present calm self--which didn’t really help her mood. For once, couldn’t he get ticked off, too? “I take it you didn’t get the permits... again.”She could have done without that “again” part. Really. “What was your first clue?””Oh, I don’t know. That stomping stance as you walked down the street, clenching and unclenching your fists like you’re already choking someone, or maybe it’s that way you’re looking at me like you could claw out my eyes when I haven’t done anything to piss you off.””Yes, you have.”She could tell he was fighting a smile. Thank goodness he had the good sense to keep it hidden. “And that is?””You don’t have a gun.”He snorted. “Come on now, you can’t shoot every Greek official who gets in your way.””Wanna bet?”Brian stepped back to let her enter the taxi first. At six three, he was a good-looking man in his mid-forties. Very distinguished and intelligent. Best of all, he was independently wealthy and more than capable of financing their latest venture in futility without complaining too much.Unfortunately, he wasn’t into bribing public officials. Was it too much to ask that she find a corrupt financier? Surely Brian should have some vice, and at the moment she couldn’t think of a more self-serving one than that.”So what do we do now?” he asked as he joined her in the car.Geary sighed, wishing she had an answer. Her team was waiting on her boat at the docks, but without the permits that allowed them to excavate the mounds she and Tory believed to be a city wall, all they could do was dive over the surface of what they’d found and do nothing more than admire it.Sad comfort that. It’d been the best lead they’d had in years. “I want another silt sample.””You’ve already tested and retested those.””I know, but maybe it will help to convince them to give us the permits.” Yeah, right. She’d been given the run-around particularly good and the words from her latest visit still rang in her ears.”This is Greece, Dr. Kafieri. There are ruins all around us and I will not allow you to begin tearing up the floor of the Aegean, which is a busy shipping area, when all you can give me is another this-is-Atlantis story. Really. I’ve enough treasure hunters trying to pilfer our national history for their own gain. I don’t need any more. We here in Greece take our history most seriously and you’re wasting my valuable time. Good day.”It was enough to make her want to bang her head on the man’s desk until he either relented or had her committed. This wasn’t about treasure, but trying to tell that to him had been as futile as trying to fly with wax wings.”There has to be some way around this.”Brian stiffened. “I won’t be a part of anything illegal.”And unfortunately, neither would she. “Don’t worry, Brian. I don’t want to go to jail for this, either.”But there had to be something else she could do.... If only the pain in her head would let up enough so that she could think. But the throbbing pain, much like the official, seemed determined to ruin her day.She leaned back in the seat and watched the beautiful buildings and landscape of the town drift by while people went about their business on the sidewalks. How she wished she could be carefree enough to roam in and out of the stores, shopping and laughing like the majority of them. Unfortunately, she’d never once been a tourist anywhere.Geary Kafieri was always all work and no play.Neither of them spoke as the taxi wended its way through the narrow streets to the dock where their research boat was waiting. While Brian paid the fare, Geary got out and made her way up the gangway to face their team with her gloriously redundant failure.Tory met her first. At fifteen and very average in height, Geary’s cousin had long drab brown hair and thick glasses. She was an awkward teen who had more interest in her books than much of anything else. Even though Tory didn’t remember her father, Theron, she was just like him. Finding Atlantis was her only ambition.”Well?” she asked, her young face expectant.Geary shook her head.Tory let out an expletive that made Geary gape. “How could they not let us excavate? What’s wrong with those people?””They think it’s a waste of time.”Tory screwed up her face in distaste. “That’s stupid! They’re stupid!””Yes,“ Geary said drily. “We’re all stupid.”Tory scoffed at that. “I’m not stupid. I’m a certified genius. But the rest... Stupid.””I told you not to bother.”Geary looked past Tory’s shoulder to find her other cousin, Cynthia, joining them. Named for the Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis, Thia hated everything to do with Greece. The only reason she was here was to get college credit and follow her latest fixation, Scott, who’d thought this would be a fun summer activity. Not to mention the small fact that had Thia stayed at home in New York, she’d have been forced to work in her mother’s deli, which she hated even more than Greece. At a cool six two, the titian-haired beauty was also one of the few women taller than Geary--something that was quite a feat given the fact that Thia was barely eighteen.Geary frowned as she noted Thia’s long blue skirt and white long-sleeved embroidered Grecian blouse. “I thought you were sunbathing,“ Geary said.Tory leaned forward to whisper in her ear. “She was, and she took her top off earlier, hoping Scott would see her bare boobs and join her. He didn’t, but the men on a passing boat almost fell overboard before Justina made her go belowdecks.”Thia curled her lip. “You little nark. While you’re confessing things, you should tell Geary how you almost set fire to her reports because her cat scared you and you knocked over Teddy’s Bunsen burner.”Tory blushed before she pushed her glasses up on her nose. “Genius, but not graceful. C’est moi.”Geary smiled at the girl as Tory spoke the terrible truth. Grace had never been Tory’s virtue, unlike Thia, who had more than her fair share. “It’s okay, Tor. I’d have just made you redo them.”Thia gave a heavy sigh as she cast her gaze around the deck. “Is this not the most boring place on earth? I can’t even get Scott to come up from below for more than a split second.”Obviously. If nudity didn’t inspire the man to come up, nothing else would.”He’s down there with Teddy,“ Thia continued in an irritated tone, “draped over an excavation map--like that’s ever going to happen. What is it about this godforsaken country that every time I bring a guy here he loses his mind?””Maybe it’s from being around you too long,“ Tory said, tucking a stray piece of hair behind her ear. She leaned forward to whisper to Geary in their own unique language of ancient Greek and Latin. “I think she sucks the testosterone right out of them and then digests it for her own.”Geary laughed.Thia went instantly stiff. “What did she say about me?”Geary shook her head at Tory before she responded. “Why does it always have to be about you, Thia?””Because it is.” And with that, she flounced off.Tory let out a tired breath. “One day I hope she finds someone who can put her in her place. I’m tired of watching her emasculate poor Scott. I swear she has to be part succubus.””Oh, don’t go there. I wouldn’t wish her on anyone.””Good point.” Tory paused before she turned a probing stare on Geary. “So tell me what happened.”As if she wanted to relive that misery. “Not much to say. They refused to give us permits... again.”Tory actually stomped her foot. “Ah, man. That’s so not fair.””I know,“ she said, patting Tory’s arm. “We just have to be patient.””To heck with patience. At the rate they’re going, I’ll be in retirement and will have to dig with a cane.” She let out a sound of supreme disgust. “This is the closest we’ve ever been to finding the city. I know Atlantis is right there. I can feel it!”A chill went down Geary’s spine. Tory was just a little too close to their fathers in personality for her tastes. The same insanity that had possessed them drove Tory, too. It was like a madness in her blood that kept her working late into the night after everyone else had retired. There were times when it truly scared Geary. All of the people in their family who’d ever shared Tory’s level of dedication had met with an early death. It would destroy not only Geary but also their grandfather should anything ever happen to their youngest family member. She was what they lived for. Then again, Geary had often suspected that Tory used it as a way to distract herself from the pain she felt at being an orphan. The poor thing had no memory of either of her parents. Their work was the only way Tory could feel close to them...

Wonderful addition to the series
By Amazon Customer
Sherrilyn Never Disappoints. I love how she ties all the characters in as she goes. Each book is written about a particular person/love story, but there is also an underlying story and she continues with characters from other books and grows the "family" and it is amazing how it all fits together, like pieces to a puzzle, with each book.

Not bad
By Maki
I am a big fan of SK's dark hunter series. I thought about skipping over the dream hunter books because I thought that they didn't really matter in the dark hunter series, but since some of the characters in the dream hunter series are in the DH series I decided to read them.
Let me just say that this book wasn't as bad as some viewers put it. In no way is this book my fav among the DH series. And for some reason I keep missing the fact that the time frame was set years b4 the first book. Another thing is that I kind of new right away how the story was going to play out. And for some reason there was just something missing in this book. The extra "umph" that is present in SK books was just not present. A certain "je ne se quois" factor.
The characters were developed ok. Their interaction.....ok. The story line was not up to the excitement as the previous books. For the most part I liked this book. But its no where near as good as the other DH books. It was just OK to me. It is good enough to get the other dream hunter books though. And it still hasn't turned me off of the DH series either.

Fascinating Twist on the Greek Pantheon
By Jennifer Stewart
Let me start out by saying if you're not a big fan of mythology then Sherrilyn Kenyon is not the author for you. That being said, I love mythology and Greek mythology in particular and am a big fan of all her books. Kenyon is not afraid to embrace the wonderful intricacies of Greek mythology and yet still leave her own unique stamp on the world she has created. Her gods seem more like real people than remote beings. This book is the first to flesh out the Dream Hunters who have been mentioned in passing in other books (see the Dark Hunter novels). This book gives them their own spotlight. The action focuses on Arikos, a former Oneroi (good guy Dream Hunter) who has turned Skoti (could be bad Dream Hunter some are, but Arik is more selfish than bad) and now feeds off the emotions of humans in their dreams. He has become obsessed with a mortal woman and makes a deal with Hades to become mortal and experience life as a human male. Did I mention that none of the Dream Hunters have emotions? This book does a good job of portraying Arik's confusion with emotions and also gives a lot of background on the Dream Hunters in particular, especially those characters that have cropped up in the Dark Hunter books in the past D'Alerian, M'Adoc, and M'Ordant. (Actually as is the case in a lot of Kenyon's books these characters are so fascinating that you want a book on them to get to the bottom of their unique histories!) The romance is this book definitely took a back seat to developing the plot. The love scenes and the romance is very well written, and I personally like my romances to have an engaging plot and storyline. If you're looking for non-stop steamy sex though, the entire series probably isn't going to be your cup of tea. This book is great in that it sets up and clarifies some mysteries from the Dark Hunter series. I don't recommend it as a stand alone book, to really appreciate it and to know what is going on at several points you really need to have read the Dark Hunter sereis. In the timeline of the universe this book takes place before any of the Dark Hunter books. I would say roughly a few years before the events in Night Pleasures. As usual, I love Sherrilyn Kenyon and would recommend any of her books without hesitation.

One of the Best of All Time
By Michael L. Gooch
I bought this book back in 1992. It has been a favorite through the years. There is so much information (and wisdom) contained within these pages that it is always fun to re-read every few years. In addition, it is an excellent source for `bar bets' if you are so inclined.

This book is laid out in my preferred style, that is, main topics that contain related questions with short, easy to understand answers. I really appreciate Marilyn's style of answers which is accomplished in a matter of fact way with a heavy sprinkling of humor. In fact, the most enjoyable aspect of this book is the fact that Marilyn does not attempt to come across as smarter than the rest of us (which she is) or better in any sense.

For content, there are 5 main section: (1) The Pleasure and Pain of Being Human. (2) Politics and the Press. (3) Nature at Work and at Play. (4) Thinking About Thinking. (5) Questions That Need No Answers. Each section consists of between 6 to 10 subcategories. You are guaranteed to find at something that fascinates and thrills.

I am disappointed that it is no longer carried by Amazon. With the tons of trash material out there, one would like to think that the better works would continue to survive on this website. Sadly, we must look elsewhere.

Now if she would only write more often.

I hope you find this opinion helpful.

Kissing Christmas Goodbye (Agatha Raisin Mysteries, No. 18), by M. C. Beaton

Unlike quite a number of people, Agatha had not given up on Christmas. To have the perfect Christmas had been a childhood dream whilst surviving a rough upbringing in a Birmingham slum. Holly berries glistened, snow fell gently outside, and inside, all was Dickensian jollity. And in her dreams, James Lacey kissed her under the mistletoe, and, like a middle-aged sleeping beauty, she would awake to passion once more.... From M.C. Beaton's Kissing Christmas Goodbye.

Agatha Raisin is bored. Her detective agency in the Cotswolds is thriving, but she'll scream if she has to deal with another missing cat or dog. Only two things seem to offer potential excitement: the upcoming Christmas festivities and her ex, James Lacey. This year she is sure that if she invites James to a really splendid, old-fashioned Christmas dinner, their love will rekindle like a warm Yule log.
When a wealthy widow hires Agatha because she's convinced a member of her family is trying to kill her, Agatha is intrigued---especially when the widow drops dead after high tea at the manor house. Who in this rather sterile house, complete with fake family portraits, could have hated the old lady enough to poison her?
Agatha sets out to find the murderer, all the while managing a pretty, teenage trainee who makes her feel old and planning for a picture-perfect Christmas, with James, all the trimmings, and perhaps even snow.

From Publishers Weekly
The indestructible Agatha Raisin, still at the top of her game in her darkly droll 17th whodunit (after Love, Lies and Liquor), is feeling woefully middle-aged after hiring Toni Gilmour, an endearing U.K.-style Nancy Drew full of teen energy and charm. As Toni takes over the pet recovery end of the sleuthing business, Agatha looks into a mysterious letter from Phyllis Tamworthy, the rich matriarch of the Manor House in the idyllic Cotswolds, who suspects family members of plotting to kill her before she can change her will to disinherit them. Agatha and her friend Sir Charles Fraith attend Phyllis's 80th birthday party, only to see the lady keel over, poisoned by hemlock in her salad. Digging into Phyllis's past yields an even darker mystery. Bestseller Beaton's dry wit enhances Agatha's struggles with aging, men and her most challenging case yet. (Oct.)

Be careful what you wish for

Agatha Raisin is bored. Her detective agency in the Cotswolds is thriving, but she'll scream if she has to deal with another missing cat or dog. Only two things seem to offer potential excitement: Christmas, and her ex, James Lacey. This year Agatha's sure that if she invites James to a splendid Christmas dinner, their love will rekindle like a warm Yule log…but that fantasy will have to wait for now. A wealthy widow―who sent Agatha a letter before her death saying one of her family intended to kill her―has been found dead. Now Agatha must set out to find the murderer, even though, in her heart, she's still dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones she and James used to know….

a paticularly satisfying Agatha Raisin installment
By tregatt
I wholeheartedly concur with the previous reviewers: this particular Agatha Raisin installment is a good one.

It's beginning to look as if the bloom has fallen off Agatha Raisin's obsessive love for her handsome ex-husband, James Lacey. Not that Agatha is about to admit to this. No. she's decided that her feelings if ennui are down to the lack of a really good investigation that she can sink her teeth into. So that when Agatha receives a letter from Phyllis Tamworthy who claims that someone in her family is trying to murder her. Agatha thinks that Phyllis Tamworthy may be a nutter, but something about the letter gives her pause. What if it is authentic? What if Phyllis Tamworthy is in real danger? With visions of Agatha Christie's "Hercule Poirot's Christmas" in mind (Christmas is after all round the corner), Agatha decides to take on the case. Isn't just typical then that all of Agatha's Christie-like visions would come to nothing? Phyllis turns out to be penny-pinching bully to comes her children firmly under her thumb, while Phyllis' children seem to be so colourless and spineless a bunch, that Agatha has a hard time seeing any of them as potential killers. But when Phyllis drops dead after a truly awful tea, Agatha is sure that a very cunning murderer has struck. Quickly Agatha springs into action, determined to discover who murdered Phyllis, and no one, not the hostile police officers in charge of the case or Phyllis' equally hostile relatives or the twinge in her hip are going to stop her...

While the last few Agatha Raisin installments have not been exactly topnotch, "Kissing Christmas Goodbye" will remind fans of the Agatha Raisin installments that shone. Our prickly and acerbic Agatha is in top form as she juggles trying to figure out who murdered Phyllis, sorting out her latest employee's domestic problems and obsessing about giving her friends a truly spectacular Christmas dinner. I enjoyed every single moment of "Kissing Christmas Goodbye," and am truly delighted at being able to recommend it as a good read not only to fervent fans of the series but to anyone looking for a nice British cozy to curl up with. As to the perennial question: how will things pan out for James and Agatha? This installment moves neither backwards nor forwards in answering the question. There are intimations that Agatha may no longer be in love with James; but can we believe this? I'm not too sure and will look to the next Agatha Raisin installment for answers!

Was I expecting too much? This Agatha Raisin didn't hold my interest very much.
By M. C. Crammer
I was so excited about getting this Agatha Raisin series book to read -- at Christmas time, no less -- because I love the series and Agatha. Unfortunatley, I was disappointed. For me, the humor wasn't as funny as in previous books, and the plot (never a strong point in this series) was wafer thin (I am reminded of the quote of a critic who said that to call the plot wafer thin was to insult wafer manufacturers everywhere). I read at the book, but it was definitely not a pageturner for me.

The one good part was a new character, who shows considerable promise. She gives us a glimpse of what Agatha may have been like at 18.

Joy to the World
By L. A. McCoy
I enjoyed this book immensely. I had a few chuckles. This is an easy to read, quick, fun, enjoyable mystery that once you pick up you don't want to put it down. Hooray for Agatha Raisin, a middle aged but full of life woman. I have read the whole series and was a little worried that Agatha was wearing thin, but this was definitely right on track where it should be

About the Author
T. Jefferson Parker set the country afire with his debut novel Laguna Heat, and has continued to prove himself a meteoric and masterful talent.

From AudioFile
It's 1985 in Southern California, and the ghosts of postwar glamour, glitz, and greed still linger in swanky Laguna Beach. In the face of a series of grisly murders, Laguna Homicide cop Tom Shephard finds he must unravel a mystery that reaches back over 40 years--into his own past. Christopher Lane's clear, confident delivery provides easy listening as he creates the ambiance of a time when pay phones and cigarettes were part of life. Lane's crisp vocal impressions for the variety of people affected by the murders draw listeners deeper into the complex plot. Parker's debut novel comes roaring into the twenty-first century in audio format. With Lane as narrator, it was worth the wait. T.J.M. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine

like characters smoking and kids carrying portable radios instead of ...
By David A. Freas
There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. There’s a touch of romance, a bit of action, and some gunplay, all fairly standard in a mystery. But there is nothing really special about this novel.

According to information on Stop You’re Killing Me (stopyourekillingme.com), this was Parker’s first book, and it shows. There are many flashes of brilliance in his narrative, but in some places, the flow of his words is clunky and his dialog reads a bit stilted and forced.

Parker also spends a bit too much time in his main character’s head, which slows the pacing down.

Many little details, like characters smoking and kids carrying portable radios instead of iPods to the beach, solidly peg this book as over 30 years old.

Complex story that has bursts of speed, and other parts moving at a glacial pace.
By Amazon Customer
I wish I could divide this book into three parts, all intertwined.
Part one is the fast paced mystery of a Laguna cop chasing a killer. This story is quick to read, and a real page turner.
Unfortunately, it's sandwiched in between two other stories, one looking back over decades of how the main characters got to be where they are. Needed but slow. Also, there's the psychological underpinnings of the main character Tom, and his family roots. It's painfully slow.
When I was bogged down in the hand wringing, I could only read a couple pages before falling asleep. When I got into the murder mystery, I couldn't put it down.

Solid procedural
By Karen Miller
It was refreshing to read an "older style" police procedural -- no cell phones or DNA. Shoe leather and intuition play their part. Lots of good twists and turns and a believable ethical dilemma added to the plot. There is good, solid writing here. A little romance helps, too. I want to read more written after this solid debut.

But the city and its people live on. A new pantheon of personalities have moved in and are making their mark on this dark and dangerous city.

Meet these denizens of the city where just surviving is a full-time occupation.

From Library Journal
From Mickey Zucker Reichert's opening tale of a jaded child whose desire for solitude is quashed by a group of determined women ("Home Is Where the Hate Is") to Jeff Grubb's story of a fugitive sorcerer with a head filled with words of power ("Apocalypse Noun"), the 11 selections in this shared-world anthology introduce a new generation of readers to the lawless and enticing city of Sanctuary. Shapechangers, wizards, cutpurses, and assassins share the spotlight in stories by Lynn Abbey, Raymond Feist, Andrew Offut, and others. Fans of the original "Thieves' World" series should enjoy this volume, a sequel to Abbey's novel Sanctuary and a harbinger of other volumes to come. A good choice for most fantasy collections.

Review
"Brilliantly conceived." - C. J.Cherryh

"Thieves' World was a signal event in fantasy history for two reasons: The first was turning a lot of talented writers loose in a neutral world. The second was the creation of books that were rightfully hailed by fans and other professionals alike for their unique approach to the storyteller's craft and its rich legacy of first-rate story."-Raymond E. Feist

About the Author
Editor Lynn Abbey is the co-creator of Thieves' World (with Robert Lynn Asprin). She is the author of Sanctuary, an epic novel of Thieves' World, and lives in Leesberg, Florida.

A return to the past and a new begining
By papaphilly
Many moons ago there was an anthology called Thieves World. It was about a small city called Sanctuary and the goings on within this city. A caste of characters was developed by different authors and as the books progressed, so did the characters. The difference was the authors could use characters from each other. This gave a very rich narrarative to the various tales. Instead of getting one version of events, the reader recieved many versions of the same accounts. This gave the world of Thieves World a depth not very often seen.
Lynn Abbey has returned to the city again and worked his magic. Once again the city of Sanctuary is in full bloom. This is the first of the new set and it is a great beggining. The setting is many years after the end of the last book from the last collection. This gives the city a new feel, but does leave an old reader wondering what happened to the various characters from the last anthology. Some old characters do make appearences as older or dead versions of themselves, but most of them are gone without mention. A new reader can figure out what had happened with the history from the new stories, but there is nothing like living the old books. This is my only complaint about first book. The writing is superb and Abbey gets my compliments with his editing and choice of writers. My personal favorite story is "Doing the Gods' Work" by Jody Van Nye. Even in a city of cutthroats, somebody is trying to build something for the good.
This book is great start to something new and does harken back to the old for those of us who enjoyed the first Anthology. Highly reccommended.

Good anthology helping to restart Thieves' World
By L. C Glover
Disclaimer: If you have not read the original Thieves' World books, this book will not be of much interest to you. You really do need the back story from the other books for this collection of short stories to be of much interest to you.

Review:
The Anthology is fairly well written with a clear story line developing in the background of the short stories. The feel is very much in line with the original Thieves' World books. However, the grittiness and nastiness of Sanctuary is not quite right. It seems a bit on the sanitized side vs. the original books.

It makes sense to try to get a new group of readers interested in the Thieves' World milieu. However, I think you lose a key part of what made Thieves' World so inventive and alive -- not sure of what will happen to any character. The characters are never really in any danger which is my only large knock on the new Thieves' World books. In the old books (aside from Shadowspawn), you never knew what was going to happen to a character from one book to the next book.

After reading this book, it has made me want to go back and reread all of the original Thieves' World books. So, it must be doing something right if it has relite my interest in the milieu.

The lack of magic in Sanctuary limits what the various authors can do which is unfortunate but a natural side-effect of the massive magic escalation in the original books. The hints of Magic returning does bode well for the direction of the new Thieves' World books.

I liked this book enough to read the next book in the series.

From Library Journal
The mystery in this performance is the reader, Alexa Bauer. She has a very masculine-sounding, fluty, upper-class English voice that is completely mismatched to the spirit of the story?and to the characters, especially the children. The novel concerns a recently widowed Englishwoman and her two young children, who spend a summer with relatives in New Hampshire. They agree to take care of the property owner's cat, Errol. Almost immediately, they sense trouble in the neighborhood. The man next door insists his darling kitty has been impregnated by Errol and is in a dreadful snit. And then there is a series of deadly fires. Along the way the listener meets the town characters. Overall, a dreary rendering of a novel that is not very fascinating in the first place. Not recommended.?Barbara Valle, El Paso P.L., TX

Whiskers and Smoke - A Good Story
By Bruce A Hudgens
Whiskers and Smoke that was originally published as "A Trail of Ashes" was renamed and added cover art to take advantage of the popularity of feline sleuths. To be sure, there is a cat, Errol, in the story, but he does not have a major part in moving the plot along like KoKo (The Cat Who... seriers) or Joe Gray and Dulcie (Shirley Rousseau Murphy). Once the reader overcomes his expectations concerning the role of the cat, the story becomes an interesting character study of an English family visiting New Hampshire. The companion book, Paws for Alarm, should be read second. Taken together they are an enjoyable study of an English family visiting America and an American family visiting England.

There's a cat in the story (big Maine Coon) but this is not a cat-mystery, as the cover suggests.
By M. C. Crammer
That's fine with me, because although I love cats, most cat-mysteries aren't very good because they're too focused on cat descriptions and too little focused on plot. Babson's mysteries typically include cats, but this mystery is really about a small "lake town" in New Hampshire that's been having a problem with arson during a particularly bad draught. The main character is Rosemary, an English woman with two children and a sister who lives in this town. Recently widowed, she agrees to spend the summer in New Hampshire in a house-swap arrangement. Each house has a cat, and Errol, a Maine Coon, goes with the NH house. Rosemary realizes that something is very wrong with her sister and brother-in-law. Rosemary's husband is appearing in disturbing dreams, and there's a sense of anxiety that grows as the drought worsens and fires come closer together. A cast of characters are introduced, and presumably, one of them is the arsonist. But what's going on with anxious Celia, the sister, and her nervous wreck of a husband? The tension and sense that something odd is going on builds like a Twilight Zone episode -- is Rosemary imagining things because of the trauma of her husband's unexpected death? Or is the right to be concerned?

There's not a lot of action in this book -- it's a psychological cozy with a big cat thrown in. One minor point: tThe book was written in the mid eighties, which may explain some things that seemed odd to me. For example, Errol, the Maine Coon is not only unneutered but allowed to wander free.

I had the criminal pegged early on, more through instinct than anything else, but it did not detract from my enjoyment of the book. Besides, there were a couple of surprises in the book besides discovering the arsonist.

This is sort of like a companion book to another one of Babson's in ...
By DF
This is sort of like a companion book to another one of Babson's in which an American woman swaps homes with a widowed British lady. In this one, we see the British widow in America. I found the one about the American in the British lady's home funnier and more interesting, but it was fun to read about what was happening on the other end of the swap in Paws for Alarm.

Too Tempting to Touch, by Cheryl Holt

Ellen Drake has seen firsthand how dangerous scandal can be. Her family was torn apart by an unjust accusation ten years ago, and now, working as a paid companion, Ellen must keep her reputation above reproach. Catching her employer's betrothed in a sizzling tryst is bad enough; even worse that Ellen should find herself so infernally enthralled by the spectacle! Ellen intends to prevent Alex Marshall, Lord Stanton, from dallying with other women before his wedding day, but the rogue turns the tables--with an invitation to be his paramour. It's a proposition that is too outrageous, too indecent…and strangely irresistible. With a single touch, Alex opens the door to a secret world of sensual desire, a world Ellen is burning to explore…

Alex intends to be faithful once he's married, but in the meantime, London offers so many tempting bed partners. Giving the prim Miss Drake a taste of the excitement she clearly craves will be a delightful diversion, nothing more. But their secret dalliance unleashes the vengeance of someone who is plotting revenge, someone whose own erotic pursuits are twisted with madness. And the scandal that destroyed Ellen's family is about to come calling once again…

A huge disappointment!
By J. Hurt
I've read and loved every Cheryl Holt book published. I couldn't wait for this book to come out and bought it immediately. Don't waste your time - it's a huge disappointment. The characters are shallow and unlikeable. Their behavior is completely inconsistant. Alex tries to bed every female possible early in the book then suddenly is ok with a relationship, marriage and potentially children. Ellen is supposed to have extremely high morales and focuses on keeping her reputation 'above reproach' yet she has nightly trists with Alex when she is just down the hall from his fiancee who is her friend? The supporting characters aren't much better - most of their behavior is incestuous and downright disturbing.

Stick with the previous Cheryl Holt books - much more entertaining! This one's a dud.

Yawn......
By Kindle Customer
A huge disappointment. I have read several of Ms. Holt's books... this one isn't worth picking-up. There is very little "romantic" about a woman being raped by her drunken husband on her wedding night. The protagonists spent most of the story yelling at each other, and the same conversation was held by more than one couple in the story. Other than their looks, there is little to recommend the main characters. Since all the characters are related, I must only conclude that this was one heck of a dysfunctional family!!

The book is too tempting to throw away.

Not Her Strongest Effort!
By Kristi Ahlers
One incident changes Ellen Drakes life she knows the danger of scandal and has vowed to live her life scandal free. She is now a companion for Rebecca attending balls and soir?es not being a part of society but not fitting in with the hired help. She is at just such a function when she is trapped in a room where a seduction begins to take place. She makes her presence known and is shocked to find Rebecca's betrothed one of the participates. Alex Marshall is as handsome as sin and a temptation Ellen soon can't ignore despite her best efforts to keep her distance. What started out as a way of keeping Alex monogamous ends up tormenting her. His kisses make her long for things that aren't hers to have...or can she have a happy ending?

Alex is shocked when Ellen tells him she wants him to give up his rakish ways for Rebecca is fianc?e. Rebecca doesn't fire his passion like Ellen does with a simple kiss. It's not long before Ellen and Alex are caught in a compromising position and things change. Alex saves Ellen when she needs him most but will he be able to save the fledgling relationship that has been slowly growing?

Ms. Holts latest romance is peppered with several secondary characters who play key parts in the romance between Alex and Ellen...almost to the point of crowding the romance out. This romance is sensual...almost erotic in nature but Alex and even Ellen are difficult characters to care about at turns. Alex is almost too arrogant and I would have liked to have seen the conflict that kept them apart curtailed a bit...without giving away details the ending saves this read. This is not her strongest effort but at the same time it's not one I'd go out of my way to avoid either.
