Amazon.com Review
Even after death, Robert Ludlum remains the master of the international spy caper, and whether this posthumously published new thriller was cobbled together by a real ghost or already completed before Ludlum died doesn't matter. All the trademarked Ludlum gifts of plotting, pacing, and suspense are on full display in this engrossing mystery about a former covert operative turned private security executive who's stranded, abandoned, and marked for murder by his old colleagues when he manages to survive an unsurvivable mission. Rescuing renowned philanthropist and statesman-without-portfolio Peter Novak from the clutches of the terrorist who murdered his wife and unborn child, Paul Janson watches, unbelieving, as the plane carrying Novak back to freedom explodes before his eyes. Soon after the first post-mission attempt on his life, Janson begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together, but Ludlum keeps the reader from seeing it whole until the last thrilling chapter. A page-turner that doesn't let up, this one will leave Ludlum's fans hoping there are more unpublished manuscripts where this one came from, a not unlikely possibility. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Ludlum died in March 2001, but here he is again, back with yet another posthumous thriller. Such books rarely live up to the author's standards, but this one is different: it's vintage Ludlum-big, brawny and loaded with surprises. The hero is Paul Janson, a private security consultant who retired a few years ago after a notorious career as the U.S. government's go-to guy for nasty jobs no one else was willing to take. Against his better judgment, Janson accepts an assignment to rescue Peter Novak, a Nobel Peace Prize-winning philanthropist and international troubleshooter held captive by Islamic extremists on an island in the Indian Ocean. Janson pulls off the stunning rescue, but as they make their escape, Novak dies in a fiery explosion-or does he? Janson has his doubts; within hours, he finds himself targeted by separate groups of assassins for reasons that baffle him. As he zigzags his way across Europe, leaving piles of bodies at each stop, he begins to wonder who Novak really is. The answer he eventually discovers provides readers with one of Ludlum's most outrageous plot twists in years. Extremely engaging and agonizingly suspenseful, Ludlum's plot bolts from scene to scene and locale to locale-Hungary, Amsterdam, London, New York City-never settling for one bombshell when it can drop four or five. If this wild, unpredictable and colorfully cast novel is Ludlum's swan song (he supposedly left behind notes for several thrillers), it's a memorable one indeed.

It's bad enough when a man who once saved Peter Janson's life is about to be executed by terrorists. But things get worse when Janson's rescue efforts go off course.

Outstanding Finale
By Bonnie Toews
As Anderson and another reviewer have already commented, this Ludlum novel did have distracting passages that almost read like essays, and since we don't know where Ludlum left off before he died and someone else took over for him, I would like to suggest another possibility to this departure from his usual treatment. Authors who want to lend authenticity to their stories do far more research than they can actually use in a story. Often, in the first draft, they include everything -- its called overwriting -- until they are ready to revise. And then they edit back unwieldy descriptions in favor of keeping the story and pace moving forward. Ludlum may have died before he could do this, but in leaving his research in, the editor has left us with another Ludlum legacy.
If we were to separate these passages from the main story line, we would have an extraordinary thesis on today's terrorists--he described their warped mindset--what motivates them, their history, their homelands, their grievances, their hopes and dreams. Ludlum provides needed insight into today's enemy, and that's always been his greatest power--his books have not only thrilled us, they have educated us about so many things--government structures we never experience, about people we never meet in our daily lives, and now at the end, he helps us see America the way terrorists see us--from the oppressed to those deluded with power, whether on the side of the enemy or within our own ranks of government and commerce. He has created characters we want to meet again, and for his last work, what a memory to leave with us if that is not the case. Paul Janson and Jessica Kincaid--today's hero and heroine--the kind our world needs in a time when trust is threatened.
Ludlum did not disappoint his fans. This is an amazing book that reveals nothing until the last chapter and even then the suspense does not let up until the last page. If Ludlum has succeeded in training a few authors to complete outlines of novels he created before he died, we can only welcome their continuing contributions in his memory, and more power to their own works, but it would be nice to give these writers the recognition they so richly deserve. On that, I agree whole heartedly with a few other reviewers here.

This was a very captivating story of high order spy stuff, convoluted levels of intrigue, exciting events and an extremely intense braiding of story lines that lead you by the nose through a maze of high level strategy and deceit.

About the Author

Matt Braun is a fourth-generation Westerner, steeped in the tradition and lore of the frontier era. His books reflect a heritage rich with the truths of that bygone time. Raised among the Cherokee and Osage tribes, Braun learned their traditions and culture, and their philosophy became the foundation of his own beliefs. Like his ancestors, he has spent most of his life wandering the mountains and plains of the West. His heritage and his contribution to Western literature resulted in his appointment by the Governor of Oklahoma as a Territorial Marshal.

Braun is the author of more than forty novels and four nonfiction works, including Black Fox, which was made into a CBS miniseries, and One Last Town, which was made into a TNT movie called You Know My Name. Western Writers of America awarded Braun the prestigious Golden Spur Award for The Kincaids. He is also the recipient of the Cowboy Spirit Award and was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1999.

"Old days are long gone."Jordan commented."All the hostiles are over in Indian Territory."
By Jerry Guild
Jack Jordan,an ex Texas Ranger is running his own ranch in Pueblo, Colorado. He is planning to marry the daughter of wealthy local, but he has agreed to return to Texas to help put down an Indian Uprising. It is 1773,and the great Financial Crash has wiped him out. However;while in Texas he has found Palo Duro,a long valley of unbelievable resources that is waiting to be developed into an immense cattle empire. He returns to Pueblo, filled with ambition and dreams,he then goes to Denver to obtain the financial backing that would be required to fill his dreams. He meets John Adair ,a young Irishman who has inherited great wealth and has come to the West to fulfill his dreams.
Jordan and Adair form a partnership and a lasting personal friendship.
This is their story of how they developed Palo Duro to become the largest cattle empire in Texas. One would think it would take decades to accomplish this;but hard work, imagination and perservance result in them accompolishing this unimaginable success and wealth in a very short time.
This is only the second novel that I have read by Matt Braun;the other was "Doc Holliday",which I reviewed on June 15,2013.These are both excellent novels and without doubt ,I intend to read more from this amazing writer.
I am reminded of the Pulitzer Prize winner Larry McMurtry and "Lonesome Dove";and feel that this novel by Braun is certainly as high calibre as "Lonesome Dove".Both of these writers know the Old West intimately and fill their novels with descriptions, characters, experiences that give excellent insight into what life was like in the Old West as it was opened up.
It is longer than the type of Westerns I read,at 377 pages;but it is so well written and constructed;that the interest level was so high, that I found it a page turner from beginning to end.
Somehow,I get the feeling that we haven't seen the end of this story and fully expect that there will ,and should ,be a sequel to this novel. And how about a movie;we are just about due for another epic Western;and here it is.
Now,on to to another of Matt Braun's novels. If these two are any indication, and I fully expect they are;I've got some great reads awaiting.

this book was bought as a gift to replace the one my step-son had stolen. He likes it so much that he was trying to buy another and was having a hard time finding it in some book stores so I ordered it off Amazon and he was so excited when I gave it to him that he said he was going to probably reread it that night.

Peter Benchley's Creature, by Peter Benchley

At a small marine institute off the coast of Connecticut, only marine biologist Simon Chase realizes that a sixteen-foot pregnant Great White is feeding in the area. But even Simon doesn't know that a far deadlier creature is about to come out of the deep and threaten everything he cares for. A creature whose malevolence is unthinkable. Whose need to feed is insatiable. And whose relentless hunt for prey is unstoppable.

Nearly twenty-five years after his huge bestseller Jaws, the master of the deep has done it again, letting loose a chilling new predator that only he could create. Drawing on his singular knowledge of the sea, science, and history, Peter Benchley masterfully spins a suspense-filled novel that hits you on a primal level, makes your heart pound, and leaves your blood running cold.

We never thought it was really safe to go back in the water, and Benchley's new eco-thriller exploits the fear he engendered in Jaws . Here the menace is a creature spawned by a demented Nazi scientist, which has hatched 50 years later in a quiet Atlantic fishing community. Simon Chase has dropped his society wife and infant son, Max, to finish school and start the Osprey Island Marine Institute near Long Island's North Shore. Shark studies are his speciality. Chase fears the responsibilities of fatherhood, but when Max, now 12, visits, the two get on famously and soon Max has the run of the institute. Then, a crew tracking a pregnant Great White named Jaws spot a porpoise with a claw gash in its tail and see massive kills of sea life; when they then observe the same claw marks on Jaws herself, Chase knows "there's something out there." Enter Dr. Amanda Macy, who studies whales using sea lions with strapped-on video cameras. Macy leases the institute, both solving Chase's money woes and making first contact with the unknown menace. Soon Macy's camera gets a shot of a steel-clawed hand grappling with a sea lion. After additional bloody encounters at sea, the beast comes ashore, eventually to threaten Amanda and Max. Benchley's writing is fast-paced, and he alternates the tension with poignant family scenes and ample amounts of marine ecology. Literary Guild main selection; major ad/promo; author tour.

YA-YAs whose tastes run to monsters and man eaters will enjoy this tale of a Nazi plot gone awry. Near the end of World War II, a German scientist and his bizarre creation are smuggled out of Europe on a submarine. An accident destroys all but the creature in its protective box; the story then fast-forwards to contemporary New England. Simon Chase, marine biologist, is attempting to keep his tiny marine institute solvent, raise his young son alone, and continue his research. He is among the first to notice the effects of an unidentifiable predator in the local waters that consumes humans, sea birds, dolphins, and sharks, leaving evidence of metal teeth and razor-like slashes on its victims. Into this chilling scene comes Dr. Amanda Macy and her trained sea lions to do research on whales. With her financial and technical support, Chase can continue his own work, but the growing threat from the monster forces them to direct their attention toward it. After a series of grisly events, they meet a Jewish survivor of Nazi medical experiments; from him they learn that they are tracking Heinrich Guenther, a half-human, amphibious warrior programmed to be a relentless killing machine. Benchley provides a clever, tense, and explosive ending to this tale of science run amok. Evil is satisfyingly vanquished, and the hero gets his institute and an engaging new partner to boot. An action-filled novel that's perfect for poolside reading.

From Library Journal
Once more exploiting the territory and plot that made his fortune in Jaws ( LJ 3/15/74), Benchley gives us a grotesque beast--this time human-made--who lurks in the ocean and kills things. A horrid leftover from a long-ago war, the monster leaves the bodies of his victims with trademark slashes that attract the attention of Simon Chase, founder and chief scientist of the Osprey Island Marine Institute. Chase, who studies and tries to protect sharks, shares danger with his buddy Tall Man and his 12-year-old son Max. In an ecologically insensitive subplot, he also works with Dr. Amanda Macy, who uses trained sea lions harnessed with videocameras to photograph whales in their natural habitat. The best that can be said for this tired work is that the marine animals and the details of shipboard life are appealingly portrayed. Wait for the movie.

Well Worth Picking Up
By K. OSAKO
It seems like this book had drawn a fair bit of criticism, and it's true that it pales in comparison to Jaws, but making that comparison is in itself the wrong way to approach Creature. Looking at the other reviews, it seems that the people who gave this one high scores picked it up with fewer expectations, and that's how I recommend you approach it. Don't compare, just enjoy it.

Benchley's writing is superbly smooth throughout. He makes writing look easy, a trait he shares with Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and the rest of the best. Let yourself be carried along by the story and the hours will fly by. For my money, it's a worthwhile ride. The only reason I'm knocking a star off is that this book would have benefited from being longer, with more space allowed for character development and sub-plot. Perhaps the ending is a little too neat, as well.

Some have criticized the concept of the creature as being unbelievable, but, being an avid SF and Fantasy fan, I had no problem in suspending my disbelief. Nazis created a super-predator? Ok. I can roll with that.

If you can, too, check out Creature. If not, check out Benchley's other work. :)

Um, are we all reading the same book?
By A Customer
All right. We all know the plot--deadly sea-based creature slowly revealed through its carnage as it eats its way into the lives of the intrepid protagonist and his family until fully in view in act three, just before being heroically dispatched. It worked the first time, the second and it even works here fairly well. Suspension of disbelief this time around, however, is snapped in that moment of revelation. Contrary to what EVERYONE has been cluelessly reporting, the creature in question has nothing to do with genetic experiments. Nothing at all. Zero. Zip. Nada. The big DONUT. It's a psychotic killer surgically fitted with claws, teeth and gills. Not in stasis, no, not in some sort of suspended animation--again as has been offered by so many posts around here--not frozen in time, but living blissfully beneath two miles of Atlantic ocean happily dining on shrimp and littering the shells on the ocean floor. For FIFTY YEARS. FIFTY. YEARS. Unaware as to why he is there. Under pressure that would pulverize. Amid lethally cold temperatures. A sexually mutilated 75 year old man surgically slapped together with claws, teeth and gills. This is the creature. This is the killing machine. This is chum. Feed it to the fishes.

My Soul Purpose: Living, Learning, and Healing, by Heidi Von Beltz, Peter Copeland

Funny, forthright and irrepressible stuntwoman Heidi von Beltz was 24 when a crash on the set of "The Cannonball Run" left her barely alive and completely paralyzed. Doctors gave her a few months to live or, at best, a few miserable years confined to an institution. Heidi set out to prove them wrong--and today she can move all her major muscles and can stand on her own. This is the inspiring account of her remarkable life. Photo insert.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1985, Heidi, the 25-year-old daughter of Brad von Beltz, a veteran actor in westerns, was working as a stuntwoman and was on her way to a successful Hollywood acting career. Then, on the set of Cannonball Run, she broke her neck in a car crash. Written with journalist Peter Copeland (She Went to War), this inspiring account details Heidi's rehabilitation, which was achieved despite the gloomy prognosis of doctors, who predicted she would remain a quadriplegic and die within five years. Her parents found a pioneer in spinal surgery who fused their daughter's neck, and with their unwavering support, Heidi embarked on a series of rigorous alternative treatments and spiritual journeys that enabled her to regain movement in her arms and legs and to sit and stand with support. Optimistic and energetic, Heidi today surrounds herself with loyal friends, including actress Melanie Griffith, works on healing herself and reaches out to others with severe physical injuries. From Booklist
With a budding movie and stunt career, von Beltz suffered near-fatal injuries during the filming of Cannonball Run in 1980. Damage to several neck vertebrae led to a harsh diagnosis of permanent paralysis with little chance of improvement. "She will never again move below the earlobes," one doctor told her parents. However, she was determined to disprove such medical opinions and to get on with living. Strong support from her parents and friends (Melanie Griffith is her closest friend) aided her recovery, as did Christian Science, holistic medicine, visualization, and hope. Her robust optimism about getting better--in the face of repeated negative medical opinions--was rewarded with physical control never deemed possible by numerous doctors, nurses, and therapists. After devoting herself to exercise programs and mental therapies for the last 15 years, she has straightened out her spine (S-curved by the crash), regained movement in every part of her body, and become a role model for others stricken with spinal injuries. This inspiring story offers both a view from a Hollywood insider and a testament to the power of her determined, positive will. Jennifer Henderson

From Kirkus Reviews
A name-dropping, often funny account by one of California's golden girls who, paralyzed from the neck down after a car crash, prevailed over predictions that she faced life as nothing more than a ``talking head'' and death within five years. Von Beltz fooled them, of course. Fifteen years later, she is able to sit and stand, has control over bodily functions, and can party with the best of them. She has even had a passionate affair with actor Ray Liotta. At 25, von Beltz, daughter of a Hollywood film family, was on her way to success as an actress and producer/director. Athletic and willing to take risks, she also took jobs as a stuntwoman. The accident that immobilized her took place in 1980 during a stunt scene for Cannonball Run; she woke up in a hospital with her head and body immobilized on a board suspended above the bed. She and her family simply refused to accept the medical prognosis. With help from a Christian Science advisor, a talented chiropractor, a retired neurosurgeon, and many others along the way, they set out to restore Heidi's body--a long, frustrating process. Von Beltz put almost as much work into keeping her social life going, starting with champagne parties in her hospital room and, later, weekend bashes at her Malibu house. Best friend Melanie Griffith was loyal throughout and even learned to catheterize her buddy, as recounted in a scene outrageous enough for a Griffith movie. Reading omnivorously about both science and spiritual journeys, von Beltz sought to strengthen the connection between the two. With the help of journalist Copeland, she passes her findings and convictions along. Inspirational, yes, but also remarkably lighthearted and gossipy (Harrison Ford is an early player). A reader would want to be on the guest list at one of von Beltz's parties. (16 pages b&w photos, not seen) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

beautiful book

Wow - this is such a beautiful book. Heidi was so positive throughout such a horrific injury. She was also very spiritual, smart and just so much more. I'm only sorry I didn't get to write this review before she died.

Inspiring and Motivating
By LivinginBeauty
I just finished this book, and I would recommend it to anyone with a spinal injury, especially those who were once athletic. If you ever feel like "giving up", then you MUST read this book!! Matter of fact, I plan to read it again. Inspiring! The book reminded me I MUST keep moving!! Never stop!! Don't give up!!! As long as you keep moving, you'll get better, day by day. Don't ever let the "inner you" die; for THAT INNER SPIRIT is what will keep you and your body alive, and make life meaningful.

Inspirational, thought provoking and even a tad irreverant.
By A Customer
In November,1994, was wife and I were involved in a motor vehicle accident which left her a C-6 quad. Ever since the accident I have attempted to create a life which may have resembled that which we used to enjoy yet I was never quite able to find the "magic bullet". When I read the review of Heidi's book I felt I had nothing to loose but to purchase it. I have to tell you, it was Good Medicine! My wife poured through the book several times and with each reading felt more inspired to never end for quest for the cure. In addition to a renewed zeal to live life again Kathleen began to exercise religiously and see progressas aeach week passed. kathleen continues to this day to inform me that "Heidi would do this each day and eventually........" In a nutshell "My Soul Purppose" is a painfully truthful account of a young woman who has sustained an injury which only those who too have sustained a SCI can have an appreciation for her personal tale. Rather than painting a picture of woe Heidi provides personal experiences which provides hope and inspirastion for those individuals who have sustained a SCI. To see the smile and sense the inner peace which my wife experienced as she read "My Soul Purpose" made me accutely aware that the healing which occurs after a SCI is clearly more spiritual than physical. Suffice it is to say that this book has provided the direction to heal the psyche, now it is just a matter of being patient for the rest of the healing to occur!

From the Publisher
Jeffrey Archer’s mastery of characterization and “white-knuckle” suspense, combined with a gift for the ingenious plot twist, demonstrate why he is one of Britain’s best-selling authors. Mesmerizing Multi-Generational Saga Entertains Completely
By Antoinette Klein
I am so glad to have discovered this "oldie" originally published in 1979 because it is one of the best books I have ever read. It has drama, suspense, romance, and enough plot twists to keep the most savvy reader breathlessly reading until the heart-wrenching conclusion.
William Kane and Abel Rosnovski both enter the world in 1906. One is born to a wealthy, socially prominent Boston family. The other is born in poverty in Poland to an unwed woman who dies during childbirth. They each have a remarkable life story that makes for spellbinding reading until the finale in 1963.
Abel is rescued from the woods beside the body of his dead mother by a hunter and taken into a peasant family. The Russian occupation of Poland, his fearful and solitary escape to Turkey and later America, will have you cheering this tough young boy.
Meanwhile, young William Kane is growing up in the lap of luxury, attending the finest schools, and winning every honor his father before him achieved.
You will be fascinated by Archer's storytelling and the vivid characters he portrays. You will root for Abel and take him to your heart. You will be fascinated with William and wish only the best for him. Unfortunately, when the two characters cross paths as young men, a fierce hatred erupts and they become life-long enemies, as Abel swears to destroy William Kane.
The author has made each of his main characters so endearing that the reader is torn and loyalties falter. Do you root for Abel? Do you root for William? Dare you hope they will work this out? Whatever you are thinking, you will be surprised. This is not one of those novels where you will see the ending coming, but you will be stunned, sad, and uplifted as a gamut of emotions play with your mind and heart.
I finished this late last night and have been thinking about Abel and William all day. I can hardly wait to start on the sequel, "The Prodigal Daughter."

One of my all time favorites
By Pam from Texas
The main reason I am writing this is to warn you against reading Matt Hetling's review because he gives away the whole secret/climax of the book. I can't believe it got past Amazon. Don't reviewers know not to give away the ending and secrets? Sometimes I'm afraid to read reviews for that very reason.

I won't give a description of the book since so many others have, but I will say it's one of my all time favorites. I thought it was outstanding.

Excellent Read
By ~Amazon Customer~
This book snagged me from the first page to the very last.

I loved the storyline. Really loved how it followed both main characters from their birth all the way thru the lives.

Great character development and growth.

How the author switched the point of view throughout the story really helped you to really understand both major characters and what motivates them .

It's a great read...really makes you think about the dangers of holding on to grudges

Definitely recommend

Can't wait to read part 2

With then help of 73-year-old Grandma Mazur, ex-hooker Lula, a transvestite musician named Sally Sweet, and the all-too-hospitable, all-too-sexy Joe Morelli, Stephanie might just catch her woman. Then again, with more mishaps than there are exits on the Jersey Turnpike--including murders, firebombs, and Stephanie's arch-rival bounty hunter chasing after the same fugitive--Stephanie better watch her back big-time if she wants to live to crack this case.

Hot Six:
Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum and Trenton vice cop Joe Morelli join forces to find the madman killer who shot and barbecued the youngest son of international black-market arms dealer Alexander Ramos. Carlos Manoso, street name Ranger, is caught on video just minutes before the crime occurs. He's the number-one suspect. Ranger is Stephanie's mentor--the man who taught her everything she knows about fugitive apprehension. And he's more than her friend.

About the Author
Janet Evanovich is the author of the Stephanie Plum books, including One for the Money and Sizzling Sixteen, and the Diesel & Tucker series, including Wicked Appetite. Janet studied painting at Douglass College, but that art form never quite fit, and she soon moved on to writing stories. She didn't have instant success: she collected a big box of rejection letters. As she puts it, "When the box was full I burned the whole damn thing, crammed myself into pantyhose and went to work for a temp agency." But after a few months of secretarial work, she managed to sell her first novel for $2,000. She immediately quit her job and started working full-time as a writer. After a dozen romance novels, she switched to mystery, and created Stephanie Plum. The rest is history. Janet's favorite exercise is shopping, and her drug of choice is Cheeze Doodles. She and her husband live in New Hampshire, in house with a view of the Connecticut River Valley.

Miss Plum
By Lucinda Ann Duim
I started with #12 after finding out in an airport that my flight was delayed. Little did I know what I was in for! Other passengers became more and more irritated as the length of our wait increased. I found myself laughing out loud, just amazed at a new Lucille Ball. It was the best airport experience I have ever had. What fun these books all are. Laughter is indeed the best medicine...

Hooked on Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Series
By TRISHe
After reading these books I can understand why she is always on the Best Sellers list. After reading these 3 I went out and bought the whole series. Stephanie Plum is sassy, sexy and funny. Love the whole cast of characters. I laughed at loud at the antics of Grandma Mazur and Lula, love the sexual tension between her and Morreli and Ranger and the nerve-wracking situations she gets her self into. I like her better than Sue Grafton and Mary Higgins Clark put together. TRISH PFAFF

When icy blue meets amethyst eyes, and gagging ensues
By Tracy Vest
When a friend calls in a marker and asks Elite Ops agent Nik Steele to investigate why an honest lady would point to him as a murderer, Nik thinks that it will be a quickie investigation and he can bet back with his team. Then he meets virginal witness Mikayla and is instantly attracted and finds that he believes that she's telling the truth also. Particularly when she suddenly becomes a target. Can Nik resist the urge to take Mikayla's innocence while protecting her?

Well, this is a Lora Leigh novel, so of course the virginal heroine is disrobed and spread out for the hero within moments of meeting him, despite spending years dreaming of wearing white to her wedding and giving herself to her husband. And despite his massive girth and her lack of innocence, of course the Earth moves for both of them and she is instantly smitten, while he resists her because he is not worthy... Yeah, we've read this recycled plot so many times now that it has become redundant.

I love a spicy romance, which is why despite my better judgment, I always seem to cave in and give Leigh one more chance. And I am usually disappointed. Am I alone in thinking that I'd much rather read two or three well written love scenes than 15 redundant couplings that border on a chatty acrobatic anatomy lesson? The whole virgin meets an older battle scarred he-man who thinks nothing of deflowering her because he simply must possess her is a huge turnoff. And all the anoying chatting during sex? I found myself wanting to tell them to shut the heck up and get on with it. And if I had to hear how ethereal and fairy like she was with her amethyst eyes meeting his icy blue ones... well let's just say I just threw up in my mouth. The suspense was also lacking, with a haiku last minute character add-on that was just ridiculous (and yet not surprising). The (lack of) editing is also horrendous.

If you are looking for an author that can actually incorporate a plot into a spicy storyline, make a beeline toward Megan Hart, Bella Andre, Shiloh Walker, Lisa Marie Rice, or Toni Blake/Lacey Alexander. They are still at the top of their game. And apparently have decent editors!.

So Bad It's Funny To Read (D Grade)
By Katie Babs
Where oh where shall I begin about Renegade, the latest book by Lora Leigh? Here we have a tortured, beats his chest angsty hero and a twenty-six-year old virgin heroine who waits with bated breath for her prince charming to come along and sweep her off her feet. Instead she gets a man who constantly puts her down because of her obsession with wearing a white wedding dress and a proud V-card carrying member.

Mikayla Martin lives in a small town where everyone seems to know your name. She comes from a family full of love and cheer, as well as being independent, up to a certain point because her parents and brothers feel the need to know her whereabouts every minute of the day. Mikayla, who will spit in your eye if you dare to call her Kayla, owns her own exclusive clothing shop where she makes wedding dresses from hand. Mikayla is obsessed with having her own white wedding to the point that she will stay a virgin until she meets that perfect man who not only can pop her cherry with such precision, but can give her that white picket fence, the mini-van, 2.5 children and most likely a dog, cat, goldfish...the whole nine yards.

But Mikayla's dreams come crashing down when she goes to pick up her irresponsible, rascally brother from work. Mikayla's brother up and left, forgetting to tell her that he found a new ride home. And while she's waiting for him, she witnesses a shooting and swears it's Maddix Nelson, this big wig in town. But no one believes Mikayla, for Maddix has an alibi with witnesses and everything.

As Mikayla runs around trying to get everyone and their dog to believe what she saw was fact, Madddix calls in a favor and Nikolai Steele aka Renegade comes vrooming into town on his "wicked black Harley." Nik is ornery, mean and dark. Maddix has been framed and because he cares for Mikayla, (but not in a dirty old man way) and wants Nik to get to the bottom of this before Mikayla is hurt, marked for death, assassinated, or something unsettling on the horizon that gives Maddix the wiles.

Broody Nik, who's a dripping orgasm, thinks Mikayla is too little Miss Mary Sunshiny. How can she be so pure and innocent? How dare she not even have one parking ticket in her past? Nick will look further into this pearl of a woman who is so not for him because she's the marrying kind and gasp- a virgin!

But then Nik and Mikayla chat and soon she's the victim of a few scary events such as a mugging that's really a warning for her to keep quiet. Nik will protect her because the lion inside of him, or perhaps his crouching tiger, hidden dragon, wants Mikayla as his mate and not even she can keep him away.

Then we have scene upon scene of incredible foreplay where Nik puts his mouth, tongue and fingers to good use. He stops from going to far, even though Nik wants to lose his little Nick in Mikayla's body. He'll respect her wishes to wait for some phantom prince charming to marry her. Until them he'll make her ooh and ahh much like the fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally and still be able to wave her V-card around.

After more than a few going downtown scenes where Mikayla is close to drowning in a messy river of passion, she comes to the conclusion that she'll gladly let Nik tear up her V-card because no other man makes he feel so... horny and complete; but still not the type who she'll marry. No sir, because as soon as Nik finds the villain responsible for trying to kill Mikayla, he's outtie on his wicked Harley. Just as Mikayla has her V-card status, Nik proudly has his own "I'm a loner baby card, and can only give you massive climaxes, but not my heart, soul and all that jazz where I would settle down into small town life because I was married once before and it didn't turn out well at all."

So, while Nik and Mikayla have enough sex to bring on some major chafing between the two, they figure out who is behind the murder and scary tactics against Mikayla. And let me tell you, it's a scene worthy right out of the old nighttime soaps of Dallas or Dynasty.

Renegade was ridiculously bad reading. Nik is a cringe worthy caricature of what a hero should be, and more than half the time I felt he should have gone to therapy. The man has enough resources and people on his phone, but why not a good therapist?

Mikayla kept pushing and pulling Nik every which way, and just as Nik was led around by his wee-wee, Mikayla was led around by her hoo-haa.

The love scenes border on purple prose and were written the same almost every time. Think of insert tab A into Tab B and there you go. But every so often there would be an outcry of emotion from Nik as he reflected on his lovemaking with Mikayla while in the middle of it with a deep thought such as:

"And he knew Mikayla. She would want children. She would hunger for children. And Nick knew he could never, ever allow himself to take that risk again."

Nik, why not just buy Mikayla a happy meal if she was so hungry?

Lora Leigh is insanely popular for reasons that escape me. With ho-hum love scenes that seem to be written identically each and every time, and with characters that are way too emotive and cartoonish, I can't help but wonder why.

This was my first book in a long time by Lora Leigh and after reading Renegade, I would have to say that she and I simple don't fit.

All she left me with was a bad craving for a McDonald Big Mac and plastic Happy Meal Toy.

Ms. Leigh needs new editor.
By 24paws
I liked the book because I love the series and I'm glad Nik got his own story. But too many mistakes are making it into the final copy. One mistake is Nik arrives for a meeting in a Hummer and leaves on his Harley. Cool trick. Another Kira is substitued for Mikayla. In another place Nik and Makayla are having a conversation and Makayla is washing dishes then she loads the dishwasher and turns it on then she goes back to washing dishes all while trying to have a serious conversation with Nik. Also, why did Nik tell Makayla he had to go out for awhile and reappears a very, very short time later to assist Makayla with her shower and take her to bed? Near the end when Kera is shot twice, wouldn't Ian have stayed with her instead of helping bring down the bad guys when his seal team was there to help? There are the expected misspelled words or words not used correctly.
I love this whole series of books and I have all of them, way back to Reno, commander of the seal team. Ms. Leigh deserves someone better to edit her work and she needs to edit her own work better. These mistakes are becoming expected not unusal. With all the books she sells shouldn't the publisher, St. Martin Paperbacks, respect her a little more and make sure the mistakes are few and far between. I hope the next book not due out till spring will be better edited and I like it a whole lot better when more of the team members are around to help.

Love Stories, by Lynn Curtis, Rosamunde Pilcher, Colette, Catherine Cookson

The world has as many love stories as it has beating hearts.

Now you can experience the power of ageless love in this engaging collection of beautifully crafted and atmospheric stories...

A lazy summer on the Cornish coast changeds Rosamunde Philcher's "Lalla" from girl to woman.

Catherine Cookson's "Miss Geraldine Parkington" bids a bold farewell to a long life of loneliess and lovelessness.

John Updike's "A Constellation of Events" watches the first glimmer of adultry become a never-to-be-forgotten starburst.

A runaway rabbit plays Cupid for a leggy redheaded secretary in Jully Cooper's delightfully quirky "The Square Peg."

"Kiss Me Again, Strager," says Daphne du Maurier's sleepy-eyed sired when a young man follows her home on a dark London evening.

For romantics everywhere, a bouquet of fiery passions and lingering sweetness.

From Publishers Weekly
Previously published in Great Britain in 1990, this collection of 18 stories about love and its many guises represents an uneven gathering of authors, from Stella Whitelaw to Ivan Turgenev, Jilly Cooper to John Updike. But whether written by a literary heavyweight or a popular romance writer, the stories share a simplicity of narrative and rather dramatic tone. Typical of the more romantic tales are Catherine Cookson's "Miss Geraldine Parkington," about a spinster from a well-to-do English family who proposes marriage to her longtime gardener, and Pilcher's "Lalla," in which a plain girl relates how her beautiful older sister gave up a dashing fiance and modeling career to return to her childhood sweetheart. Updike's "A Constellation of Events," a housewife's account of the beginning of an affair, stands out for its author's familiar ability to shade and alter narrative with a telling glance, or through tone of voice. Unfortunately, despite the presence of other major writers (Daphne du Maurier, Guy de Maupassant, H.E. Bates, Colette), such subtlety and craftsmanship are rare in this volume, which proves satisfying without being challenging, interesting without being memorable.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Authors ranging from Guy de Maupassant to John Updike are represented in this collection, first published in Great Britain in 1990. Many of the stories have little to do with love in the traditional sense, and even fewer display any romance, so that readers looking for happy endings might be disappointed. Infatuation, self-sacrificing adoration, comfort and companionship, brief affairs, love betrayed, and even destructive and dangerous relationships are among the themes. Those interested in more complex relationships can find some thought-provoking stories. Unfortunately, the selection is uneven and some of the stories are simply old-fashioned. A marginal purchase for most collections.
Barbara E. Kemp, SUNY at Albany
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
It is deliciously easy to be swept away by Colette's masterful storytelling, and she is just one of the writers featured in this collection. In "The Kepi," it is apparent almost from the outset that an emotional descent awaits the woman who has just taken her first lover--a much younger man. Her initially "blissful immolation" is destined to end in heartbreak. And in "The Nerdlecase" by Elizabeth Bowen, it is not difficult to determine the paternity of the child born to an unmarried seamstress. Once Miss Fox is ensconced in the rather threadbare country home of her genteel employers, they are in for a rude surprise when she unveils a picture of the little boy. An atmosphere of weariness pervades these stories. The predominant and unmistakable mood is love, but love followed too closely by abandonment. Alice Joyce

Together they would commit savage murder...

A Teenage Love Pact Sealed In Blood

Outside a small Texas town by the side of the road, high school sophomore beauty Adrianne Jones lay with her skull bashed in and two bullets in her head. She had been driven to an isolated spot outside of Mansfield, Texas by star student David Graham while David's girlfriend, Diane Zamora, hid in the trunk. First David tried unsuccessfully to break Adrianne's neck, then Diane came out of the trunk to attack her with a set of weights. To finish off the job, David shot her between the eyes. For months, there were no leads on the killing until Diane confessed to her military school roommates about the secret she and her boyfriend would take to their graves...

Tainted Love

The brutal killing shocked the entire town of Mansfield. Even more shocking were the killers, David and Diane, model teenagers, devoted high school sweethearts, military academy-bound honors students-- and desperate lovers who feared that Adrianne's sexual encounter with David had come between them. Killing Adrianne was "the only thing that could satisfy [Diane's] vengeance," said David in his confession to police-- the only way, she told David, to restore the 'purity' of their love...

Pure Vengeance

1A KNOCK ON THE WINDOWIt was well past midnight when Jay Green heard rapping at his window. Asleep, and not sure how long the tapping had been going on, he moved toward the sound, almost mechanically. He didn't have far to go, since he had taken his bed out of the room and slept on the floor."Graham," he whispered, as he reached over and popped open the window. He said it "Gram," in a crisp single syllable that showed the traces of his Louisiana origins. "What's goin' on?"Green reached out and gave David Graham "the P.J.," the handclasp from their para-rescue orientation course."You don't wanna know," said Graham as he clambered into the room. The window opened onto a quiet residential street in Burleson, Texas, a straight 20 miles south of Fort Worth on I-35. Graham had been through it many times and knew the drill. Knock. Pop the screen. Climb in. Put the screen back. Green's parents agreed to look the other way while friends came and went through their son's "front door," as long asthe screen was put back up. Usually, it wasn't this late."What's goin' on?" Green asked again, as his friend stood up. The two crew-cut teenagers were lean and muscled from their ceaseless exercising."I need to stay," said Graham. "Zamora's here too."Graham reached back and helped Diane Zamora climb through the window. She was a slim, dark-haired girl more than a foot shorter than the 6' 2" Graham. Like Green and Graham, she was a Civil Air Patrol cadet and also, contrary to military decorum, Graham's new love interest.Zamora mumbled something to Graham and quickly slid into the shadows as Green plugged in the lights to his corner Christmas tree, bathing the small bedroom in an eerie red and green glow.It was only December 4, but even Texas had Christmas coming and Jay Green, anxious to get in the holiday spirit, had thrown up the scraggly little plastic tree that he had carried with him from military school. He decorated it with shaving cream and, in place of a star on top, gently laid a model of a C-130 transport plane.Even at 16, Green's life, like Graham's, who had turned 18 the month before, was all military. The two had met at the Civil Air Patrol, an Air Force organization that trained teenagers for military careers. Graham, who had been in C.A.P. since he was 12 and was in line to receive the Spaatz Award, the prestigious honor the national military organization gave, was headed to the Air Force Academy. ButGreen, who dreamed of nothing but being a Marine, was worried that his best friend was blowing it.Just two weeks earlier Graham had been relieved of his Civil Air Patrol command by adult officers. Now this post-midnight visit."We were never here, okay?" said Graham emphatically. "If anyone asks, we were never here.""What's goin' on?" asked Green."You don't want to know," Graham repeated. "Don't ask any questions. We were never here. This never happened."Green looked at Zamora. "David, it hurts," she said to Graham. She was rubbing her right hand, still heavily bandaged from the September accident in which she wrecked Graham's pickup truck--and nearly lost her life. As far as Green was concerned, Zamora was a large cause of his friend's problems. With apirations of being an astronaut, Zamora had also joined the Civil Air Patrol. Everything was fine until that hot Tuesday evening a few months before, when Graham and Zamora began nudging each other affectionately at a C.A.P. meeting. Now they were engaged to be married."It's going to be okay," Graham told Zamora, Then he turned to Green. "Can we stay for a while?""Okay. Okay," Green nodded. "Sure."Graham was, after all, his commanding officer as well as best friend. With their fellow cadet Joseph Uekusa, they had shared many a good time over the last couple of years and Green considered Graham as close as a brother. "We were all on the samewavelength," Green would recall. "We all knew what we were going to do with our lives." All they dreamed of was living lives of patriotic duty--Graham in the Air Force, Green and Uekusa in the Marines--as members of anti-narcotics and covert operations teams fighting evil in South America, the Middle East and Asia. "Uekusa was so hardcore," said Green, "he considered the Air Force a civilian branch of government."David, who had a pilot's license at age 14, wanted to join the American equivalent of the British Special Air Service, the elite of the elite in counterterrorism. "He always talked about how he'd some day be flying me and Uekusa in to some covert place and drop us off and leave us," said Green. And Green and Uekusa wanted nothing more than to be dropped off in the jungles of enemy territory. While roaming the back roads in Graham's old pickup truck or sitting around tables in the Brahms Diner or the Dairy Queen, the three discussed the world's hotspots, allowing the Irish Republican Army a grudging respect for fighting against British imperialism and hating drug lords for poisoning America's youth. They considered themselves hard realists about the world and girded themselves for that. They made themselves good with guns--collected them, cleaned them, fired them--and hardened their bodies with constant push-ups and sit-ups, miles of running in the rain, sleeping in bags on hard floors.Next to Green's sleeping bag was a wall of floor-to-ceiling shelves that held mostly the stuff of battle--knives,ammunition, rope, gas masks, an AK-47 pouch, aerospace manuals--much of it belonging to David Graham, who, except for the last couple of months, seemed to spend as much time at Green's house as his own.The younger teen now motioned toward a section of the carpeted floor near his small writing desk, just a couple feet from his own sleeping bag. "Sure, stay if you want," he said.Green hadn't seen Graham for a few weeks, itself an indication of how things had changed lately. But Graham hadn't been himself ever since the summer, when he returned from a week-long international cadet exchange program in Ottawa. He had lost his virginity to a Royal Australian Air Force cadet named "Helen" and for weeks could talk about nothing else. And no sooner had Green and Uekusa convinced him that he couldn't carry on a love affair from halfway around the world--"Graham, why don't you find someone who at least lives in the States?" Green had laughed--Graham took up with Zamora, which had even more serious consequences."For one thing, she was an N.C.O.," recalled Green, "a noncommissioned officer, so there was a conflict in rank. Besides that, he was her commanding officer. A lot of times she'd just not do stuff because she could get away with it."Worse, Graham lost his edge. He started skipping C.A.P. meetings and haircuts. He began wearing rings--not trinkets, but gaudy things that cost $50 and $100 at the mall--and rock music T-shirts. Heoutfitted his beat-up pickup with $2000 worth of new stereo equipment, paid for with his dad's credit card, bought a pager and, for a few weeks, was calling Green from a new cellular phone. And he became irresponsible with guns. He fired off one of his Russian-made machine guns in his front yard and once put a hole through the floor of his bedroom with one; he especially liked his 9-mm Russian Makarov pistol, which he had begun to carry around with him. Green remembered the time he and Uekusa took the firing pin out of the Makarov as a joke."He and Zamora went out with it," Green recalled, "and he came back really mad. He didn't think it was so funny. He said some wild dogs came up on them and he was going to shoot them, but couldn't. It was pretty strange."It was a remarkable transformation for the ramrod-straight boy who carried the flag to the middle of the Mansfield High football field at halftime and whom Green and Uekusa counted on to figure out what to do in a crisis. These days Graham seemed to be doing just fine creating his own crises. One of the last times Green had seen his friend was the month before, when Graham returned from the regional cross-country competition in Lubbock, talking not about the race, but of another sexual conquest. "He told me that he had gotten it on with a girl from the track meet," recalled Green. "But I didn't know who she was or where she was from. He just said things got a little crazy."But by then, Green had stopped paying attention.Graham was going off the deep end. Losing his C.A.P. command twelve days earlier, a threat to Graham's lifelong Air Force dream, should have straightened him, Green thought.Instead, Graham was standing in Green's bedroom at two o'clock in the morning, a few weeks before Christmas, insisting, "We were never here."Green wondered if his friend hadn't finally gotten in trouble with the law. Graham had taken to speeding the backroads, 60, 70, 80 miles an hour, drinking beer and partying. Maybe he'd peeled out in front of some cop and needed to hide out; didn't want his parents to know.Leaving the lights to his tree on, Green lay back down on his bag on the floor while Graham and Zamora tiptoed across the hallway to the bathroom. Green could hear the water running.A few moments later Graham came back in the bedroom and asked if he could borrow a pair of shorts. Graham had on a pair of jeans and a gray track shirt, but Green couldn't see much in the holiday light."Don't ask," said Graham again, guessing what his friend was thinking. "We were never here. This never happened.""Okay, sure. That's cool," said Green again, handing a pair of his black shorts to Graham, who went back to the bathroom. The pair was running water for what seemed like 30 minutes. When they finally returned to the bedroom, Graham was wearing the shorts, but hadn't changed his shirt. The two lay right down besideGreen's desk. No pad, no blanket. Graham wrapped his arm around Zamora, who was shivering--then sobbing.Green was just beginning to doze off when Graham got up. "We gotta go," he said.Green went to the window, gave Graham another P.J. and said good-bye."Remember, this never happened," he said. "This is classified. Top secret. Okay?""Yeah," said Green. "So, put my screen back on.""Thanks, man. You're my best friend."The next morning Green went in to the bathroom to make sure his friends hadn't left a mess. He was concerned there would be bandages or dirt lying around. But the room was clean. Graham never returned Green's shorts and Green never asked about them. Top secret. None of them ever talked about that night again.Copyright © 1998, 2000 by Peter Meyer.

Blind Love: The Texas Cadet Murder
By tina2cats
This is the true story of two teenagers (David Graham and Diane Zamora) who where honor students that killed a young teenage girl (Adrianne Jones) in the name of love. After the murder, Graham and Zamora went about life as usual: attended classes, accepted honors, went to dances, etc. They were accepted into the Air Force and Naval Academy respectively.
For months, there were no leads about the murder until Diane Zamora confessed to her roommates at the Naval Academy one evening that she and her boyfriend had a secret that they would take to their graves. The next day, Zamora's roommates turned her in; she was required to take a leave of absence and was sent home pending investigation. Meanwhile, Graham was questioned and he typed a chilling confession discussing his part in the murder and how he carried it out. When Diane was arrested, she too wrote a chilling confession describing her part in the murder. Both were charged with murder.
Graham and Zamora had promising careers in the military where they were given special honors. They were engaged to be married. They will never fulfill their dreams and have no one except themselves to blame for that. We will never know what Adrianne Jones could have done with her life. She, too was an honors student with much promise.
Although, I liked reading this book and learned much from it, I am disapointed that the author didn't wait until the Zamora and Graham trials ended. I would have liked more information about their trials. Otherwise, the author seems to be accurate as he was writing/researching this book.

Peter Meyer captures the truth in his book Blind Love
By chuck.sager@usa.net
Blind Love is factually correct. I have read the books, seen the movie and watched both the Zamora and Graham trials on video tape. Peter Meyer's book puts it all together as best can be presented from all the evidence available.
