The Belle of the Fens

If you are an art lover, live in the greater Boston area, or are planning on visiting soon, this book is a must-read. Not only was this one of the most fascinating women I have ever read about, but she and her husband together, moved in circles with the "shakers and movers" of their generation. All of the famous Bostonians you hear about in historical lore were a part of their lives. Henry L. Higginson, who started the BSO was married to Belle's college roommate. John Singer Sargeant, was one of her closest friends and painted her twice. They were related to the Lowell's the Peabody's and the list goes on. Her museum, in Boston, (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum) is one of the treasures of the art world. Her taste so impeccable that her museum was chosen for one of the most famous art robberies in recent years. The book is so well written that all will enjoy "living in the past" with the "Belle of Boston" from start to finish!

A Fantastic Biography

Living in Boston I felt it was my duty to learn as much as I could about the infamous/famous Isabella Stewart Gardner. This book proved to be the perfect source. A detailed look not only into Isabella's art collection, but also her life, the author fills the pages with stories that bring to light how Isabella became so famous. Many a times, I found myself smiling at the passages that highlighted Isabella's quirks and personality traits.

After reading the book, I went to the Gardner Museum and found I could easily remember all the paintings mentioned in the book due to the fascinating stories behind them.

Reading this book is like stepping back in time and exploring life with Isabella herself. I highly recommend reading it

A very proper and official biography of Mrs. Jack

I bought this biography at the ISGM in the modern Centennial edition (2003) (1903 creation of the Museum). Written in 1965 by the famous biographer of many Bostonian families Louise Hall Tharp it represents an official biography of this incredible woman collector. Drawn mostly from material available in the 1950's and '60, when many people that had personally known Isabella were still alive, the book poses itself as a meticulous reconstruction of her life, habits, travels, relationships, posessions, houses, jewels, and works of art. Descriptions of her friends and protegees are detailed and Isabella's social, cultural and economical context are clearly identifiable. However, what is missing is a character study as we are used to in modern biographies, that requires a certain degree of inductive fantasy on the Author's behalf. Naturally, when the biography was written it was perfect and adeguate for its times. There were many things that could not be written about, or rather that it was better not to indulge in such as the homosexuality of many of Isabella's friends. More modern biographies have been written: "The Art of Scandal" by Douglass Shand-Tucci and "The Memory Palace of Isabella Stewart Gardner" by Patricia Vigderman, that also have their drawbacks, but that are livelier and have greater appeal to our present biographical tastes.
This book however remains a classic, expecially for the first part of Isabella's life, when her husband was still alive. We must not forget that Mrs. Tharp has written many biographies on the society of that period and is capable of weaving a closeknitted description of Beacon Hill residents and their world.
The Centennial Edition contains many photographs, all Isabella's portraits and reproductions of the ISGM and some of its works of art.
Even if dated, "Mrs. Jack" remains an indispensable cornerstone for the knowledge of Isabella Stewart Gardner's fascinating life.

Wagener's biography of the first human on the Moon is no giant leap in the art of biography, but his painstaking research and interviewing have eventuated in the thorough, balanced life story of a thoroughly balanced but extremely private hero. Ohioan Armstrong developed a passion for aviation early and got a pilot's license at age 16. The navy put him through college, he flew combat in Korea, and after that, as a civilian test pilot, he forged the record that led to appointment as one of the original astronauts in 1962. He made the first space docking in Gemini 8 and survived the subsequent emergency from loss of control to take his famous step onto the moon and into history in 1969. His life otherwise hasn't been smooth sailing, what with the loss of a daughter, the breakup of his first marriage, and the politics of the space program in general and within the astronaut corps in particular. Small step, not giant leap

What a shame. This is one of the most amazing subjects in -- and out of -- this world, but this book is bland and sometimes wrong. What a waste. It's another tale of the X-15 and moon program, thinly told through Armstrong's resume. Yes there is some neat and new stuff here, but not much. It is all overshadowed by the errors and omisions. Yes, that is Buzz on the cover. The quote as Armstrong walked on the moon is wrong. Neil was not an 'ace' in Korea. In describing an Earth orbit docking, Wagener talks of 'twinkling' navigation lights -- but I thought the twinkling we see is an atmospheric effect. What did it really look like in orbit? I don't trust this book to tell me.

There are many great books on Armstrong's times and events, I'd buy many of them before this one. And wait for someone like Jeffrey Kluger, Neil Thomson or Andrew Chaikin to get us close to Armstrong. UPDATE: The book you're looking for has been written, it's First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong

One Inaccuracy after Another

The book cover tells us that Wagener was a journalist for 30 years. This book makes me wonder what kind of journalist he was. The book is full of inaccuracies. Some examples: he calls cosmonaut Alexi Leonov Alexi Leonor; he states that Christa McAuliffe was selected as the Teacher in Space because she won a "Why I Want to Go Into Space" essay. (cheapening her hard work and ultimate sacrifice); he writes the shuttle's solid rocket boosters fall into the ocean and are never used again even though they are recovered, refurbished, and reused. There is no documentation for statements he makes that contradict other records. This is poorly written and researched book. I have told my wife, who is the director of our local library, not to waste money buying the book. I won't donate my copy to the library. Ignore the book and read the books written by those who were a part of the effort of going to the moon.

Great Subject . . . Poor Book

I must admit I was skeptical about this book upon seeing Buzz Aldrin on the cover instead of the books subject Neil Armstrong. I tried to give the author the benefit but upon reading the book it was just filled with too many factual errors to be considered an accurate account of Armstrong. Admittedly I am an aircraft and space enthusiast and someone who didn't know about the subject would not catch the most of the errors in this book, however, the erroneous information discounts the validity of the book in my opinion. It's a shame because what an intriguing character Neil Armstrong is!

Disappointing Anthology by a Master

Aside from the beloved classic, A Christmas Carol, this book proves a literary disappointment. Despite the cover's claim of "ten chilling classics" the 293 pages offer little of macabre merit. Some so-called stories were a patchwork of Dickens' ideas on the supernatural; one Review was actually an essay criticizing other author and the credulity of persons claiming to have had experience with the Spirits. My favorite tales are "The Goblins who Stole a Sexton" (a real plot), "The Mother's Eyes" (Poe style, the murderer is caught), and "The Signal Man" (premonitions of railroad disaster). These selections are worthwhile reading, but I found the "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain" ludicrously long and convoluted, with surrealistic touches and an unsatisfactory denouement. Curiously the editor includes a mini tale within the Appendix. Dickens was a master storyteller and deliberately well-researched on the European fad of séances, rappings and hauntings, but most of these stories do not represent him at his brooding best.

Book 2 in Marion Chesney's A House For The Season series finds us back with the close knit "family" of servants at 67 Clarges street. Back in the red because of the houses shifty man of affairs, the servants are pleased to learn that the house has been let. But to who?

The Hart family has two daughters-beautiful but spoiled Euphemia and sweet be plain Jane. The girls mother is a horrid, unloving harridan-who has neglected Jane and belittled her always for being plain-never acknowleding her goodness, and in fact, has no plans to give Jane any come out. Fortunately, Jane's father-a war hero, but highly henpecked by his wife, finally gets a backbone and insists Jane been taken to some events. At one such rout, Jane sees Rupert, Lord Tregarthan-the very man Jane has secretly had a crush on since childhood. Would the dashing Corinthian want the beautiful but vain Euphemia or would someone finally see Jane for the beauty she really is?

We also see romance with the downstairs set-which of the servants will be swept off their feet by the arrival of a new, exotic servant?

To find thesse mysteries out you must read this charming Chesney regency romance for yourself.

Not quite as good as book one, but still better than most regencies out there. Recommended.

I enjoyed this book....

And the four stars is mostly for the vivid descriptions of *below-stairs* life, rarely seen in a regency novel.

Jane is the plain younger sister, so commonly the heroine in Regency fare. She also has has the prerequisite "dysfunctional family" so common in these Regency novels, and since Marion Chesney can write *nasty* very well, I thought this family could really capture a prize. Jane's mother hired this "house for the season" for the coming out for Jane's older sister, and incidentally Jane too, comes along. The house they are renting was unusually cheap, and Jane's mother, never one to ask questions, is quite happy with this arrangement, but why indeed, was this "house for a season" so reasonably priced?

It seems that this house is haunted. Jane tries to uncover the underlying mystery, and in so doing, involves the Earl in her schemes. She captures his interest, and they eventually fall in love, as expected. This is the limitation of this novel - as in most of Ms. Chesney's Regency novels - they fall in love and get married so suddenly, that the reader is left wondering how it happened. The romance is hardly fleshed at all - sort of like - they fell in love and they got married.

Still, a fun read.

The house at No 67 Clarges street comes alive for the "season" in London. That particular time of year when the debutantes and their eager mothers parade their beauties in a veritable meat market only dressed up in frippery and constrained by rigid social expectations. This house is available for the season to let, and the story frequently circles about the `below stairs' staff and servants that keep the home and the lives of the seasonal residents running smoothly.

Quite an unusual perspective for a regency romance, this use of the below-stairs characters provides an interesting side note contrast to the real reason the house is occupied: the upcoming season and the two young women being thrust into society. Euphemia, the eldest is beautiful and shallow: Jane is the younger, less attractive physically but sweeter and more attractive of the two. While they are dashing through their romantic adventures, and misadventures, the below-stairs staff is increasingly consuming the story, to the point of nearly becoming the more important characters.

While the romance was sweetly engaging and quite simple, with the usual push-pull of grand gaffes on the part of our Jane, the hero in the form of Rupert is finding himself attracted to, nay in love with the young misfit.

Narration provided by Lindy Nettleton is simply a perfect addition to the story, being neither too affected with acting, nor distracting with speech patterns and tone shifts. She provides a lovely listen as she narrates this novella, and it is a good way to spend a quiet and enjoyable afternoon.

A Werewolf in a Pith Helmet

Yes, there is one in this book along with the usual werewolves, vampires, and golems. D D Barant comes through with a intricate and fascinating second installment of the Bloodhound Files.

Barant's alternate universe and the characters that inhabit it acquire more depth and complexity as Jace is pulled into a murder investigation that has it's roots in the history of her new world. Barant is building a vivid, layered world that is both comfortingly familiar and strange as Jace learns more about its politics, magic, vampire reproduction, golem history, anthrocanines, and the ban on comic books.

The murder itself hits close to home as it involves and threatens both Gretchen and Cassius, the two vampires she works with. To add to this Dr Peter seems to be the target of a werewolf with murderous intentions who seems to know Jace. The more Jace discovers, the more questions she has and time really isn't on her side.

The plot is a good strong mystery and moves along at a fairly brisk pace. Barant has created a strong, intriguing paranormal mystery series and an enjoyable cast of characters. I really hope Jace doesn't find her way home anytime soon.

Death Blows, But Jace and Co. ROCKS

Jace Valchek is a criminal profiler - she does crazy for a living. The fact that she was yanked out of our world by some major mojo and dropped into an alternate earth where the human population is a measly 1% and the other 99% are things that go bump in the night doesn't change that. She's stuck in this alternately fangy world, working for the NSA, until she can track down and catch a human terrorist out to take down the large vampire (hemovore) and lycanthrope populations so the humans can stage a resurgence. Of course, catching the guy might be a bit easier if she wasn't being pulled away from the hunt to consult on other cases every time she turned around. Cases like the murder of a pire (vampire), found green, skeletal, sparked with lightning...and dressed up like the comic book hero Flash. And you thought YOUR job was complicated?

The second installment of The Bloodhound Files series is just as extraordinary (in every sense of the word) as the first, Dying Bites: The Bloodhound Files, and in a lot of ways, just as complicated. This one throws in a very confusing (for me) plot of metaphysics and comic book mythos that I found perplexing and a bit difficult to wrap my brain around at times, and yet the power of personality of the lead character, Jace Valchek, and a strong supporting cast of ultimately unique secondary and ancillary characters lift this book into a realm of must read for me.

I'll admit, a group of comic superheroes getting slaughtered for nefarious and ultimately confusing purposes as a result of an event that happened fifty-odd years ago isn't exactly a familiar or comfortable plot for me to easily grasp, but I LIKE Jace so much, and am SO impressed with the world D.D. Barant has created here, that the plot isn't a driving factor for me. The book is well written and the plot quickly paced and there is enough tension and danger to keep me entertained, so if I didn't totally love the comic book/metaphysics part of it...or...um...totally understand it, I'm okay with that.

I'm fairly certain I'll read anything that has Jace and her partner/protector Charlie (golem enchanted with the spirit of a Tyrannosaurus Rex) matching wits and trading barbs. By far my favorite secondary character of the series, Charlie is a fantastic straight man for Jace's wisecracking and their dialogue is compelling, witty, and funny. Another favorite character is Cassius, head of the NSA and Jace's boss, who is an ancient vampire with the body of an 18 year old California surfer. Other familiar faces are back, as well, like Gretchen, the now pregnant vampire and one of Cassius' top agents, and Dr. Pete, the thrope who saved Jace's life in Dying Bites. More than once.

This is an intensely intelligent series, well written and layered delicately with an intricate world building that is revealed to the reader in delicious bites, instead of being overdrawn or forced. The narrative was a little odd for me in this book. I don't remember it from the first book, but this one is told in first person present tense, and while I'm definitely used to first person narrative - especially in the urban fantasy genre - it's usually first-person past tense so every once in awhile the lack of familiarity with that particular POV nudged me out of the story and I started thinking about the words instead of experiencing them. That would have seriously affected my opinion of the book if I wasn't so enamored with Jace and her new-found but fangy and sometimes hairy friends. There just wasn't anything significant enough to make me do anything but totally love this book and yearn for the next as soon as possible. Now would be good. I really hate waiting.

Loving this Author's World!

This is a crowded genre, so anytime a new voice rises above the others it's a good day. D.D. Barant really delivers with this series. Great world building, interesting characters, well written dialogue and a plot that isn't held together with wishes and scotch tape.

I think what I like about this series is that it could be recommended to men and women equally. If you're looking for paranormal romance, or romantic urban fantasy, it's not here. There are flashes of it, but they're very subdued and romance is definitely secondary to the mystery element. The author's dry wit runs throughout the book, with little jokes hidden like easter eggs on a DVD. Plus she imbues her characters with humanity and many layers. There are no black and white, clear cut heroes and villains here. It's complicated - just like a real world. And I LOVE the fact that the author never resorts to deus ex machina (oh look! A new sparkly power just manifested itself and saved the day! Wow!!) to solve problems.

I don't want to give away the plot, but I will say this. If you love the genre, but are tired of the same-old, same-old variations on a theme, this series is definitely worth dropping your money on. I'm really looking forward to what D.D. Barant serves up next.

CHAPTER 1I've Been Where You AreThere's a very good chance I've been where you are now, financially speaking. I've experienced just about every situation imaginable. I've been slightly uncomfortable. I've been in huge jams. I've gone through minor dilemmas, moments of unbelievable abundance, and seasons of interminable financial drought. I've been on the mountaintop of plenty, in the valley of desperation and every point between. I've made most of life's worst financial decisions. I know the secret terror of wondering not if, but when, to call the bankruptcy attorney. On more than one occasion I've thrown myself into a heap wailing; "This is it, there's absolutely no way out this time."From time to time I experienced the delight of having what I considered large sums money come my way. But time and time again to my utter astonishment instead of "more money" solving the problemsand fixing everything, I would be left in an even worse situation when the money seemed to disappear into thin air.I know what it feels like to live in a perpetual financial panic while trying to keep up appearances, dodge creditor's phone calls, figure out clever new ways to make sure the mail mysteriously disappears, hide the shopping bags, cope with foreclosure notices, finagle, contrive, and cleverly deceive. I know how to manage a new outfit even when the checking account is overdrawn, the utilities haven't been paid, and the credit cards are way beyond their limit.I've been caught up in the trap of worshiping money, convinced that just having enough of it will fix everything. I know how to envy others who in my distorted way of thinking have perfect lives, make more money than God, and are my living proof that money can absolutely buy happiness beyond belief. I know how to zap the joy right out of a marriage. I know how to put a spouse under so much financial pressure that his career is in jeopardy and his patience is all but spent.Believe me, if financial juggling were an Olympic event I'd be wearing a gold medal.No matter what shape your finances are in, no matter how embarrassed, frightened, or uneasy you are right now, relax. I know what you are going through. If I haven't experienced your exact situation I probably know someone who has. I've heard it all, so you can't shock me. You should find comfortin knowing you are not alone and relief in understanding I'm not going to judge, condemn, or flog you.My own excursion into credit hell began quite innocently. As a college freshman I quickly adapted to the privacy, convenience, and freedom my personal checking account offered. And the flexibility--that was the best part. By exercising a few clever maneuvers I could make purchases as early as Wednesday, get paid on Friday, deposit my check the following Monday and feel a little bit too cocky knowing that once again I had beaten the system. No problem. I could appear as affluent as any of my friends. I could cash checks at the local market and have sufficient time to figure out how to cover them later, in private and at a more convenient time.My propensity to spend money that I didn't actually have was greatly enhanced upon the occasion of my marriage to Harold Hunt. I got my very first credit card! As credit cards go it was no real prize. It was a gasoline card which required full payment each month. It didn't greatly enhance my spending abilities but it did free up cash which heretofore had been required to purchase fuel. And it was certainly superior to our checking account. With the advent of more efficient computer systems the bank had rudely shortened the period of time I had between writing checks and depositing funds to cover them.It was a time in my life when I experienced the ultimate in mixed emotions. I was proud that Harold had aspired to the position of bank manager,but he was my bank manager and so it was becoming increasingly more difficult to hide my audacious activities. With my Texaco credit card I felt quite entitled to "fill 'er up" at will and then enjoy 30 days of denial before being faced with the inevitable pain of payment.My first credit card kept me happy for oh, two or three months until the gentle beckoning of other credit cards with more potential won me over. I began collecting plastic, not because I had a particular reason or plan but just to have in case of emergency. The problem is that I became a habitual user. I had a lot of emergencies. Plastic spending felt good, too, because it relieved the panic. Plastic was convenient, it was socially acceptable, and it allowed me to enjoy now and worry later.In time I no longer saw my purchases for their price tag but for what they represented as a monthly payment. A 10 or 15 dollar minimum monthly payment seemed hardly worth a second thought. Such a reasonable payment amounted to mere pennies. Surely we'd never even notice it. I was impressed with the payment arrangement the credit card companies offered. The issue of interest charges never crossed my mind. The all-consuming issue for me was having as many lines of credit with the highest limits possible.Over the course of the first 12 years of our marriage I managed to do a few remarkable things, not the least of which was give birth. I had two boys we named Jeremy and Josh. So anxious was I to relivemy own childhood through the two most wonderful kids on earth that my unbridled spending now had a higher, more justifiable purpose. I also gave birth to a huge, ugly monster called debt. In time it would entice, seduce, and stalk me. I allowed it to do every thing it could to destroy me, my marriage and my home. When it came to money, I did everything wrong.Sure, we made pretty good money during those years. But I consistently and impulsively overspent our income. The more we made, the more I spent. More was never enough. When Harold's raises and promotions didn't come fast enough, I would demand that he find some way to refinance the house. Inevitably we would end up spending our precious equity to cover late fees and exorbitant interest charges in our never-ending quest to "catch up."In time our ordinary living expenses plus the minimum monthly payments on the constantly growing debt monster exceeded our monthly income. Keeping food on the table and the house payment reasonably current became the emergencies that sent us in search of new sources of credit, higher credit limits, additional cash advances--loans from any source on any terms.My turning point came one Saturday in 1982. I woke up from my marathon debting-spree to find my husband unemployed with no unemployment benefits, absolutely no income, and over $100,000 in unsecured debt. I was overcome with terror and panic. Like a cornered animal I felt as if there wasno way out, no solution and everyone was out to get a piece of me. We were doomed to lose everything that mattered.Never have I felt so lonely, so abandoned, and so helpless. For the first time in my life I was completely out of ideas. My schemes had failed along with all of my clever back-up plans. I was at the end of the line, I was tired and there was nothing I wanted to do more than give up. It is difficult to describe the unrelenting pain I carried in the pit of my stomach. So debilitating was my situation I couldn't even talk about it. To say that the communication between Harold and me was less than desirable is an understatement. At the time in our lives when we needed each other the most, we were the least able to reach out.As I sunk to my all-time low there was nothing I could do but fall on my face completely broken and repentant before the One who knows me best and loves me most. I begged God to forgive me for the terrible mess I'd brought upon myself and my family. I confessed my penchant for lying, for deceiving in order to work things out on my own. I unconditionally promised that I would do whatever it took to turn this horrible situation around, to pay back the debt and change my ways. Since I was already in confessional mode I humbled myself even further by admitting to God that I had absolutely no idea where to start or what to do.I wish I could say that at that very moment a brilliant light burst through the window as I was kneelingon the kitchen floor with my face buried in an overstuffed rocking chair.. If only a loud voice had emanated from the brilliance announcing that all our debts were miraculously paid in full, our credit slate wiped clean. If only I could report that at that very moment I was supernaturally endowed with an invisible, impenetrable protective shield which would fortify me against ever again being tempted by the seductive lures of the credit industry. If that had happened, I would have a very happy publisher because this book would be guaranteed a permanent position at the top of the bestseller list.Aren't we all secretly looking for miracles that will let us off the hook? Magic pills that will instantly fix everything? I received no such intervention, no magic. I suppose it is a good thing too, because had the solution been handed to me on such a scintillating platter I doubt I would have ever undergone the personal transformation that I have. Had my personal financial recovery been simple I might have been too easily persuaded to return to the foolishness that got me in trouble in the first place. Pain and fear are fantastic motivators, and was I ever motivated.Change for me was a process which began ten days later. I received a phone call which would alter our lives. I agreed to accept a two-fold employment position. I became both a property manager for several large industrial developments and a real estate agent selling and leasing industrial properties. Hard work? Yes. Stressful work? At times. Wonderful opportunity?The best. With my new job came a big change on the home front. As I became the breadwinner, Harold became the home keeper. Switching roles turned out to be an excellent move. Jeremy and Josh got to spend a lot of time with their Dad, and I had an opportunity to test my resolve to do whatever was necessary to pay back the debt and change my ways. I learned firsthand how difficult it can be to earn a living.I came to the point that I acknowledged the true source of my income. I determined that I'd spent my last moment worrying about from where the money would come. I realized for the first time in my life that my employer (or my parents, investment portfolio, pensions, bonuses, rental income, unemployment checks, gifts from family and friends or any other entity) was not the source of my income. These were simply channels through which I received money. The source is God who'd given me abilities and skills. I determined that never again would I fear the loss of my job, the fall of real estate values, the stock market or any other economic disaster. I could relax confident in the fact that the channels through which I receive money may come and go, but my source is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Never again would I mistake the channel for the source nor would I shirk my responsibility to perform to the very best of my ability.Our spending habits immediately changed dramatically. Over the following months and years we learned to cut and cut. And cut. And cut somemore. I can't say we did everything right. Because we didn't share our situation with anyone and sought no outside help we missed out on an important aspect which would have surely sped up our resolve to live debt-free.There is something cathartic about telling another person about your situation and plan to change that situation. In 1992 I had one major cathartic experience.By that time we had struggled through 10 years of financial recovery. We'd done the old three-stepsforward two-steps-back routine. We didn't have a good master plan and treated the entire situation as a deep dark and embarrassing secret known only to the two of us. We stumbled more than once which did nothing more than delay the time it would take to reach our goal of becoming debt-free. By this time we had paid back the major portion of the debt; we had started our own real estate company and things were going well. But the debt repayment was taking much too long. I was becoming impatient, and began looking for a way I could bring fresh new excitement into my life and at the same time make enough additional income to get rid of the debt once and for all.My search ended when I got the wild idea to write and publish a subscription newsletter. I had the equipment in place, I had a modicum of computer knowledge, and I sure knew the subject matter. After a few months of planning and strategizing Cheapskate Monthly was born on January 1, 1992.In the first issue I gave a very abbreviated version of my story, the mess I'd made, and the journey we were taking toward recovery. I had learned to affectionately refer to myself as a "cheapskate" because that was the best word I could come up with which defined the radical changes I had learned to make. I redefined a cheapskate to be one who saves consistently, gives generously, and never spends more than he or she has.Within a very short time I felt as if someone had turned on a faucet. Subscriptions started pouring in, the media started calling and I had to get a bigger post office box. Hundreds of letters began pouring in. Time and time again I would open a letter which would begin, "Dear Mary: I've never told anyone what I'm about to tell you ..." and then the floodgates would open. With each successive issue of CM I would open my heart further which in turn would encourage readers to do the same. As I became accountable to thousands of people throughout the U.S. and Canada my own personal recovery began to speed up.As I began reading everything I could get my hands on in preparation for writing a new issue each month I began to understand where I'd been, why I did what I'd done and how far I'd come. I found validation in learning that much of we had done in order to get back on the right financial track was exactly right, and I had moments of regret and sadness as I admitted that we'd blown it on more than one occasion.One of the most remarkable things I learned was that which I'd considered my unique problem was shared by many others. I even discovered people in situations worse than mine. But the wonderful thing was the sense of fellowship. In time I would receive so many letters that answering them became my number one challenge, but I couldn't ignore them because these were people who needed me as much as I needed them. As I would write reply after reply I could feel myself becoming stronger. The more I shared of my own recovery struggle, the more easily I was able to reject the constant opportunities to return to my old ways.In time I began speaking publicly, telling my story and offering hope and encouragement to others. Soon I found myself living my recovery in fast-forward mode and in the public spotlight.Some time during that first year I was offered a book contract which I accepted and miraculously found time to write. Once the book was published the faucet turned on full-blast and the letters started coming faster and faster. I received letters of desperation, fear, panic, success, joy and thankfulness. You name the emotion or situation and I believe I have at least one letter in my files that fits it to a tee.So did we reach our goal? Yes. Do we have new goals? Yes. Have I recovered? No. I will always be inprocess with my recovery. It is a step-by-step proposition for me. I still struggle with the temptations of overspending, getting into debt and having today what I'd rather pay for next year. I handle it muchbetter now than I did before. I can go for days without being tempted. And I find that speaking out and helping others, encouraging those who are in the financial pits, encourages me. It's a lot like physical fitness. The more I work at my recovery, the stronger I get. But I need to work out regularly or I am sure to weaken and become susceptible to a major backslide.... today has been the most stressful of all days of my financial worries."I am a 34-year-old homemaker. I have two children and left a lucrative career to stay home with them thinking I could and would make the necessary sacrifices. However, once my unemployment ran out I slowly started to get into debt. We just weren't making it on my husband's income alone.When I quit work I had approximately $4,000 in credit card debt and a personal loan of $5,000. While I worked I lived from payday to payday and after ten years I really didn't have anything to show for it except maybe a closet full of clothes. I was always responsible for my own debts and my husband his.When I quit I received a $20,000 severance which was to have gone to my mother to repay the $15,000 she lent us to purchase our home. But instead I paid off the personal loan ($5,000) and spent the rest on I don't know what.I then started borrowing funds a little at a time from my mother's account to cover my overdrafts (I had signing authority but up until now she had no idea.) I just thought, "Oh, I'll be able to start paying it back every payday," but that never seemed tohappen. Now she knows and is furious with me. I owe her about $25,000.This, combined with my husband being totally unaware of our obligations, has caused me immense stress. He has no idea that I've used his credit cards for cash advances to the tune of $ 7,000 and that I've remortgaged our home twice now without his knowledge.My total debt is approximately $130,000 and my husband thinks it is $60,000. I can't talk to him--he would never understand.Sometimes I think the only way out is the coward's way. If I were to pass on our home would be paid for, my personal loan would be paid for (insurance) and my husband and children would get a $150,000 life insurance policy.I feel like I am going to lose it all--my sanity, my family, everything. This book provides concrete tools into getting out of and staying out of debt. Two years after purchasing this book and implementing the steps, I am not only out of debt completely but my financial base is more secure than I ever thought it would be. Has worrying about money or paying your bills ever kept you up at night?
Me, too. Until I found this book.
About 7 years ago, our family was suffering from unbelievable money problems. Depressed and confused, I decided to stop by the bookstore and browse the personal finance section. There was only one problem. I didn't have twenty or thirty dollars to buy money management advice. I decided to get Mary's book and could not believe how many great examples and strategies she gave for reducing debt.
By following Mary's instructions, our family quickly began reducing our debt and wiped out almost $ 20,000 of credit card bills within a few years.

About the Author

Vernor Vinge has won five Hugo Awards, including one for each of his last three novels, A Fire Upon the Deep (1992), A Deepness in the Sky (1999), and Rainbow's End (2006). Known for his rigorous hard-science approach to his science fiction, he became an iconic figure among cybernetic scientists with the publication in 1981 of his novella "True Names," which is considered a seminal, visionary work of Internet fiction. His many books also include Marooned in Realtime and The Peace War.

Born in Waukesha, Wisconsin and raised in Central Michigan, Vinge is the son of geographers. Fascinated by science and particularly computers from an early age, he has a Ph.D. in computer science, and taught mathematics and computer science at San Diego State University for thirty years. disappointing

I consider Fire Upon the Deep & Deepness of the Sky to be among the greatest sci fi books ever written. So it was disappointing for me to see how inferior this book was. It is simply not in the same league.

Positives:
Hard Sci Fi: The world is interesting as always, and Vinge expands on the Tines by giving a variation of their species. That was well done. He further expands on the technology, its limitations in the Slow Zone and all the impossible technology the "Children" (survivors of the crash) miss so much. Also interesting. His creation of the alien Tines is thorough and mostly well done, although I felt their civilization bears far too much similarity to our own considering how very different they are from us. Still, I enjoyed them.

Plot: Plot was actually both positive and negative. Sometimes, the plot would race forward and you would hang on the edge of your seat. But other times - most times - it was a chore to read; all in all, very haphazard and amateurish. Many parts dragged, or were highly repetitive. It felt like a case of a lazy or indulgent editor. With top editing, Vinge would have been told to re-write much of it and scrap other parts. Many sections were utterly unnecessary - the same thing would be said later, or the conflict presented was repeated later - and this was especially frustrating given that IT DOESN'T HAVE AN ENDING!

Negatives:
The main negative was what I just said: No ending. I mean exactly what I say, not "no ending for some major points" I mean "no ending." It just ends in the middle of the major conflicts. Really this is just inexcusable, particularly since so much of the book could have been removed with zero difference in plot or conflict. I really, really, really resent books that end without resolution. It is supremely self-indulgent of the author - sorry, guys, I was just too lazy to finish this! - and it is dishonest to present the thing as a discrete book.

Rainbows End ALSO lacked an ending - no resolution of ANY of the main plot questions - and we still haven't seen a sequel. So it's especially annoying given that this is the SECOND book Vinge disappoints.

Characterizations: His villains are preposterous. They are just Evil in a silly, cartoonish bad guy way. As in, 'Bwa ha ha, I vill take over ze planet!' One of the humans is supposed to be some political genius simply because his parents were -- this was another very silly thing Vinge kept insisting that if your parents are x, you are x. He did this with every Child character. For instance, another child's parents were the equivalent of janitors, with practical hands on skills, so therefore, ipso facto, his son was exactly the same. I don't know where Vinge learned genetics, but he needs to go back to school for this one. Anyway, the character that was supposed to be this political genius plotted on a cartoonish level so that you could see his machinations a mile away. Actually, in some ways he exhibited the same foolish hubris the Straumli folks were supposed to have, but rather than pursue that angle, Vinge just kept asserting - via other characters - that he was a genius and also 'evil.'

Most other characters are the same level of shallowness, particularly the humans. (I was reminded of Asimov, whose robots often seemed to have greater depth than his humans. Here, the Tines were more complex than the humans. Back to the preposterous 'genetics,' Vinge makes this big deal that the Children's parents were supposed 'geniuses' so therefore the children are 'geniuses' too. This was cloying and not believable. Yes, if your parents are very intelligent, you stand a higher change of being smart too-but not a guarantee by any means. If you have a large enough sample, you should find a range of intelligence in the "Children" even if we accept the parents were all supposed geniuses. But even that assertion was just annoying. Who CARES if the parents or "Children" are all 'geniuses"? How does this forward the plot in ANY way? According to the previous book, they let loose the Blight due to Hubris. This has very little to do with "genius" and indeed the 'genius' part makes it less interesting as it is not universal (and anyway, their whole society funded their Lab so the hubris was in their civilization.)

Ravna was also really annoying to me. After Ravna does a series of stupid, passive things, another character tells her she's not a 'fool' but rather a pure heart. Um, where did this Ravna come from? She certainly wasn't like this in Fire. I felt like Vinge wanted her to act in such a way that would further the plot he wanted to write, so he changed her character. In other words, characters (also Jeff & Amdi) arose from plot necessity rather than the other way around as a pro should write.

I'd recommend the book but with the caveats that a) it has no ending b) large parts are very slow and weak c) some characters are really silly. You will need accept that this is not up to Vinge's usually brilliant standards. You can still extract an mildly interesting read, with some very good parts, and a few great parts.

I wish Vinge would get a better, more honest and brutal editor, someone who is willing to tell him the truth rather than merely flattering him. He has the potential to be an absolutely brilliant sci fi writer. It's painful to see his gifts so squandered.

Disappointing

Very little Science in this Science Fiction novel. The plot is all political scheming on the tine world between the humans and tines. I had a hard time slogging through it, the characters and actions are not typically believable (and typically act very stupidly even though they are all supposed to be geniuses. Most of the time I didn't care about characters or the plotting. There were some decently paced sections but most of the book is overly verbose and honest fairly boring - I had to force myself to read it in hopes it would get better. Some of the ideas about the tines group intelligence/personality were semi interesting, but really there wasn't much there. There is no ending to the book, just sort of stops in a pause in political maneuvering. The natural assumption/hope I had for the book was that we would find out what happens with the blights ships trapped 30 ly from the tine world. There are few hints early on that this was going to be the case. Nope. It mostly seems like a set up for the real follow up to that plot - one that could have been a chapter long and just explained the current political setup if it was needed.

I wouldn't bother reading this one unless a sequel comes out that is good, otherwise there isn't much point.

A good read, but not as great as Vinge has been

A Fire Upon the Deep is one of my favorite SF books, so it was never really in question that I'd read this. Kindle delivery was instantaneous as usual, and I read it in one long sitting on my day off. If you like Vinge's work or the earlier books, it's a given that you'll enjoy it.

However, it's not of the same caliber as the earlier books in the series. The characterization in particular is just all over the place, and a lot of the motivations seem to be more of the "because the story needs it" than organic development. The Tines are as devious as you'd expect, but their machinations are haphazard and occasionally veer into the absurd. The big revelations about what was going on were obvious far in advance. Several times there was an inexplicable jump in sequence or point of view to create drama or uncertainty that just felt cheap. It would be expected of a younger author, but this is VV we're talking about, and it felt like this book needed to cook a little longer or be tended by a harsher editor.

Also as has been mentioned, the Blight threat is not resolved in this book and if that's what you were reading for, you'll have to wait for another book.
