A cleverly conceived, well-executed mystery

What a great book! The award-winning THE ICE HOUSE is a thoroughly entertaining novel filled with some of the wittiest prose and sharpest dialogue I've ever read. Minette Walters is a gifted writer; her narrative is lucid as well as literate, and her characters are flawlessly constructed. There's also a fine plot in this book, with quite a few crafty twists and turns; my only complaint is that a few of the plot strands could not be deduced by the reader. In the sense of the Golden Age detective story, then, I suppose Walters "cheated" a bit. Nonetheless, THE ICE HOUSE is such a gloriously savory dish it's quite overlookable. Lovers of P.D. James and Ruth Rendell will undoubtedly enjoy the work of this hot new British author. One down, five to go. Next stop: THE SCULPTRESS...

A gem of a murder mystery

This is a gem of a novel, a well-crafted story of mystery filled with wonderful characters. Three women: Phoebe, Anne and Diane - a coven of lesbians, according to gossip- live in a manor house, secluded. Three murders: Phoebe's parents who died in a car crash many years ago; Phoebe's husband who disappeared 10 years ago, and whose body was never found; and a newly discovered body in the ice house on Phoebe's property. But were all of these, or any of these actually murders? And who is the man in the Ice House and how did he get there? This is a page-turner that has as much to do with discovering the complexities of the three women as who if anyone has been murdered and by whom. Add to that a couple of overzealous detectives - one chief inspector who is convinced of Phoebe's guilt and one detective sergeant who is driven by both the charms and the mysteries of the women, especially Anne. One of the best I've read this year.

A riveting read couldnt put it down

Having seen the Sculptress on TV last year and being an avid reader of whodunnits and mystery novels I ordered a copy of the Ice House. I was really impressed by the characterisation and the story. I became involved with the characters right from the very beginning feeling sympathy for Phoebe and her friends and downright dislike for the policemen. I really enjoyed this book and truly couldn't put it down. I have been looking for a new author for some time as I have been fed up with the formulaic writing of some of the popular mystery authors such as Patricia Cornwall. Finally being an expat englishwomen from Hampshire where the novel is set I found the descriptions of England etc making me very homesick. I thoroughly recommend this novel.

Patterson, the author of 13 previous best-selling novels, turns his focus to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis in this overly long novel. The characterization is cardboard, with lawyer-hero David Wolfe cast as a golden boy of good looks and keen intelligence, whose well-planned life comes apart with the reappearance of a Palestinian woman with whom he had a passionate love affair more than a decade ago. The writing is schmaltzy and stiff, but there is probably enough in the plot to hold Patterson fans. The prime minister of Israel, while visiting the States, is blown up by a suicide bomber. Wolfe's lover, the Palestinian Hana Arif, is suspected of orchestrating the bombing. The novel delves into Wolfe's past and Hana and her husband's history in Palestine, and it involves Wolfe traveling to Israel and the West Bank. Action abounds, culminating in courtroom drama. This novel would be much more gripping, however, if Patterson kept a tighter rein on his prose; his tendency is to overexplain his characters and overwrite every scene. But those excesses haven't deterred his fans yet, and they aren't likely to do it this time, either. Connie Fletcher

An Excellent Book!

At one time I was an avid reader of Richard North Patterson's books which I always enjoyed. But it had been some time sinceI picked up one of his books and with thsi in mind I couldn't wait to begin Exile: A Novel. And what an excellent read this turned out to be.

David Wolfe seems to have everything. A good job as a lawyer in San Francisco, engaged to a wonderful woman, he also is being slated to run for Congress. But with one phone call that about to all change. Thirteen years before, Hana Arif a Palestinian woman studying in the United States, met David at Harvard where he was a law student. They had a love affair for several months but she returned to the Middle East against David's protests and married a fellow Palestinian. Now her phone call to David is to say she is visiting the states with her husband and their 12 year old daughter. When she asks David to meet them for lunch, he is hesitant realizing his former feelings for Hana. A few days after David hears from her, the Prime Minister of Israel is assassinated while he is visiting San Francisco. And all fingers point to Hana as the woman who masterminded this assassination. When Hana is arrested for the murder, she asks David to defend her. But David a Jew while thinking about Hana must decide if he will risk everything to defend her or if he is willing to let somebody else do this and possibly fail.

This was an excellent novel which doesn't take sides, but tries to explain the plight of both the Jews and the Palestinians. Two people who feel that Israel belongs to them and with little hope of settling this in the near future. The author offers novel while filled with suspense also offer readers a view of both sides and the difficulties of this living in Israel and those who are exiles from this country. I highly recommend this book.

a revelation and an education

Some years ago, my wife and I were dining with an Israeli couple in Haifa. We were discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Finally the Israeli man said: "You Americans think all problems have a solution. This one doesn't." Richard North Patterson has written a splendid book that uses the story of a Palestinian woman accused of complicity in the assassination of the Israeli Prime Minister and defended by her Jewish former lover to create an even-handed compassion for both sides of the bitter tribal conflict. Once hooked on the legal thriller aspect of the story. we avidly follow the lawyer's dangerous exploration of the conspiracy wherever it might lead. It takes us to Israel, to the West Bank, and to Lebanon where we meet a variety of people who have been touched and wounded by the conflict in a variety of ways. The legal theatics are gripping, as they always are in a Patterson novel, but this time the deeper impact of making this journey is a more profound empathy for the people caught up in this tragic situation in which everyone, according to their own lights, is right . For this book, 5 stars is not enough. I recommend it to you with all my heart.

Entertaining and Incredibly Informative

The middle east conflict is, in my opinion, the hardest problem facing humanity in the whole world. Understanding all the nuances, from both sides could be a major academic undertaking. Getting perspectives from key, leading figures could require incredible access for interviews and a huge amount of research and reading.

Richard North Patterson takes all the boring, grunt work out of this and turns the process into a gripping read with great characters. He's done way more than basic homework, more like a dissertation, but being a great novelist, he's weaved in an education on the middle east conflict that not only provides a satisfying stimulating, stay up until you drop in the middle of the night read, but also a serious education.

My Kudos to Patterson for doing more than just writing a brilliant novel. This book could contribute to progress towards peace.

Other humanoid life forms also exist, and in an amazing array of shapes, from snake-like creatures to floating blobs. Bear's creativity provides a richness to an intricate, complex plot. I enjoyed it then in a print edition

I read EON shortly after it was published in 1985, I think. I enjoyed it then in a print edition, probably paperback. So far as I can remember, there were few if any manuscript errors. Not so with this edition from Open Road Media. Mr. Bear has been poorly served by this e-media specialty house. The Publisher of the 2014 e edition owes us all a corrected file.

Amazon, you need to lay down standards for the books you sell. Your customers deserve well crafted editions. So do your authors. Those of us who read print editions, expect near perfection as the standard. Why should be receive less from you? If a file is corrected, make sure those of us who bought an imperfect one, or an early draft of a book that's later published in more finished form, get the final file, each and every time.

Greg Bear is one of the masters who is capable of imagining worlds that don't exist and filling them with detail. I liked it then. I like it now.

I Gave Up

I've enjoyed Greg Bear's books in the past and was excited to read this, especially because it offered a series. I slogged halfway through Eon, seeing the creative ideas that went into the strange vehicle call the The Stone. Fascinating science and science fiction explored worlds of possibilities. Science is my profession, yet the science was sometimes beyond me.

But I never felt like I knew or cared about the characters. Not one felt real to me as page after page showed odd science ideas yet rarely a sense of what they felt. The conflicts between characters felt like afterthoughts. Even the structure of the Stone - a focus of the novel - was obtuse. I rarely abandon a novel but I'm done with this one.

Greg Bear is a favorite. His books contain exceptional plots (see "Vitals") with subjects relating to possible futures and based on today's true realities.

The epic continues

Acheron is the latest romp in the Dark Hunter series. This is the book that answers all the questions about the book's protagonist, Ash. I must admit, the first half of the book is very sombering...the tortre Ash must endure is heart-wrenching. Yet, if it was not for all Ash had endured...would he be the same god we have come to love? Everyone who reads the series knows Ash is a god; they know who his parents are...yet as the God of Destruction he does have a kinder side for the meek and defenseless. And while it is the humans that tortre him...he still defends and protects them. Case in point: Tory is Ash's equal and while searching for the mythical land of Atlantis she makes some amazing discoveries...and while Ash feels for her, he must discredit her in order to save the humans and the earth. Yet his curiousness for her is unending and he asks Savitar for enlightenment on why Ash can't foresee Tory's future. Tory sees Ash as the perfect companion and delves into his past to understand the mangod. Acheron is a great addition to the series and while it does answer some questions...it raises many more. I can only say that I am glad the series continues and can't wait to find out what is coming next...maybe Artemis will finally get what's coming to her. One can only hope! --- Another book I would highly recommend is--Sirens-- by Geo Tin: Sirens (Mass Market)--a great novel that follows the same formula of mythology.

Repetitive waste of paper stock

I'm a big SK fan and, like may others, was waiting years for Acheron's story. It was a let down.

I don't know how many times we had to read about his abuse, neglect, and humiliation. It got tiring after a while. The abuse was repetitive one can only read about it so many times before you start rolling your eyes and turning pages to move on (like Acheron had 11,000 years to do but never did).

Someone needs to do a word count for "Whore" and see if it meets or exceeds Laurell K. Hamilton's use of "spill."

I listened to the audiobook and found it laughable when the narrator (male) would describe a man in tight jeans to be yummy.

Goodbye Dark-Hunter series

I've been waiting for this book for years. I've put up with book after book of mediocre, repetitive and uninteresting adventures with characters I simply don't care about, because I wanted Acheron's story. Well, now I've had it, and since I've heard that Kenyon is now moving the series away from him and on to another character that's me out of here.

I won't summarise the plot. Hundreds of readers before me have already done that. Why wasn't I happy with this book? First, because we had over FOUR HUNDRED pages of repetitive, over-the-top angst, torture and whininess. Yes, I get that everyone hated and abused Acheron from the day he was born, but did we really need that much of it? I did find the backstory of his relationship with Artemis interesting, but that was over-long, contradictory at times and also at times required suspension of disbelief. Most of those four hundred pages covered about three years, and it could have been done in under 150. The story would have significantly benefited from this kind of tighter writing.

Repetition of several pages from previous books didn't help either, and then we were plonked in the present day without what I was hoping for: Ash's POV, however brief, on what he's done over the years for his Dark-Hunters. Why did he resurrect Kyrian and Amanda? Why does he let himself be Artemis's whipping-boy all the time even when he doesn't have Dark-Hunters to free or need her blood? (And why, after 11,000 years, has he STILL not got over what happened to him as a kid? That was simply implausible).

I did like Tory and I enjoyed their relationship, but it all happened too quickly. Come on - a week can undo 11,000 years of conditioning? Really? The balance of storytelling was completely wrong, also: the relationship story should have been far longer than the backstory.

It was good to see Nick again, but it looks as if Kenyon plans on making her readers wait every bit as long for the resolution of that storyline. There's such a thing as dragging a story out too long, and Kenyon has gone far past that line. Nick's story will simply have to remain untold as far as I'm concerned; Kenyon's history to me. Shame; the first few books in the series were really good, and Valerius's and Zarek's stories excellent. She's clearly become a victim of her own success, and that's a pity.

Whatever else it may lack, the third Ben Tolliver book ( By Reason of Insanity ; Painted Ladies ) has a setup that strongly resembles the circumstances of Nelson Rockefeller's infamous demise. Powerful ex-U.S. Senator Clayton Cunningham III, head of an old New York robber-baron family, is found dead in the townhouse headquarters of the family's foundation, in the company of glamorous reporter Jessica Silk. We discover quite quickly that Cunningham was a rotter, and learn soon enough that Silk, who is subsequently found dead, did not commit suicide. We also see that the feuding Cunninghams are involved in shady doings: scratch out any suspense from these angles, or any other. As the plot progresses further into formula, we're not surprised that so many people want to thwart obtuse New York City police detective Tolliver--though we do wonder how in the world he ever made lieutenant. The book really goes off the rails at the Cunningham's Long Island estate, where TV reporter Shelley Drake, Tolliver's girlfriend, begins to act like Nancy Drew and Tolliver turns into 007, which behavior leads to a gory climax and a Jacobean body count. Characterization and writing are pedestrian, proving only that, for Tolliver and Drake, it's more effective to be lucky than smart. Smart readers won't bother with this.

The late model black BMW had been on the road for more than an hour. Its driver had taken the turn-off from I-70 at Frederick, heading southwest on Route 340 toward West Virginia. It was dark, the traffic sparse for the time of night, around 10 P.M. The BMW crossed the bridge over the Potomac River just east of Harpers Ferry, on the way to the racetrack and slot machine emporium at Charles Town. There, where three different states had their borders within a minute-and-a-half, the BMW’s driver decided to stop and do what she had come to do. Just over the bridge over the river, within eyesight of where John Brown and Stonewall Jackson had once made the name of Harpers Ferry known to everyone in America nearly a century-and-a-half before, she pulled off the highway into a deserted wayside. There she turned off her engine and lights, and got ready to undertake the biggest gamble of her life.
At length, she got out of the car, then opened the back door. The old packing trunk was heavy—it weighed almost as much as she did. Somehow, though, she got it out. It fell to the dirt with a heavy thud. Fortunately, it had wheels along one side of its bottom. She dragged it toward the edge of the wayside, where there was an enclosed trash container. The wheels of the trunk left clear tracks in the dirt. She left it next to the trash can.
It was now just another piece of the past, something that, once out of sight, would be out of mind. It was the way she thought about life in general—always think ahead. Dwelling on the old never did anyone any good. She got back into the BMW and drove away, old anxieties floating away to make room for new ones that would soon settle in. But at the time, they were little worries, not big ones, and they were easier to tolerate than those that had chafed her too long to be borne. Out with the old, in with the new—that was the way to survive. Like Scarlett O’Hara, for Nancy Jean Sweitzer, tomorrow was always another day.
But in reality, not fiction, time has a way of catching up with everyone.

Don't Waste Your Time

Typically, I enjoy the true crime works of Carlton Smith. But not In the Arms of Evil: A True Story of Obsession, Greed, and Murder (St. Martin's True Crime Library).

This book details the case of Nancy Jean Sweitzer Kucharski Geisendaffer Siegel, a gambling addict who committed a host of crimes including bank fraud, wire fraud, theft, and forgery to feed her habit.

And when she realized one of her victims, 75-year-old Jack Watkins, would soon disclose her secret, she killed him.

And that's it. While a sad story, it simply isn't enough for a book.

In the Arms of Evil: A True Story of Obsession, Greed, and Murder (St. Martin's True Crime Library) is filled with worthless information such as naming the songs popular when Nancy was a teenager and at the time of her trial. I could care less and I'm sure most other readers feel the same.

And if filler isn't enough, the repetitiveness will be sufficient to make you want pitch this book in the nearest trash can within the first 100 pages (I only finished it for the purpose of this review).

I hate giving bad reviews. As I've said before, there is typically something in almost every book that I can enjoy. But there is just simply nothing about In the Arms of Evil that would make me recommend it.

Carlton Smith has more talent than exhibited in this book. Hopefully next time he'll return to the quality writing we expect from him.

Why Bother

In the annals of true crime, the subject and facts surrounding this crime are worthy of a footnote. Here is a quickie summary: Nancy Siegel becomes a gambling addict during her first marriage. She supports her habit with fraud. It destroys both of her marriages. She gets involved with Jack Watkins who is 30 years older and manipulates him into handing over all his cash and material possesions. Jack is on to her schemes and she decides to eliminate Jack permanently. As Jack's remains are not identified when found, Nancy continues with her endless scams and dutifully cashes Jack's social security benefits each month until the long arm of the law catches up with her and she is tried and convicted.
Honestly, there isn't enough of a story here to devote an entire book to. This book is loaded with irrelevant filler and visuals that are supposed to make its reader feel like there is some sort of story here. I found this book very hard to get into. In short, it was not only hard to read but it also was a supreme sleeper. I'd fall asleep and was only able to rough it out in small segments. My advice is don't waste your money or your time on this book as it is not all that interesting.
Usually Carlton Smith/St. Martin's True Crime Library produces good pulp true crime, but this wasn't the case here.

The books are not strict sequels, providing instead several versions of an alternate world. While The Wild Shore depicted a postnuclear holocaust society and The Gold Coast reflected a period of uncontrolled technological growth, this novel is set in an ecological utopia with a reduced population and rational use of renewable resources. Because utopias can be boring, Robinson generates action through several intertwined conflicts, combining the political and personal lives of his characters. The introduction of the newly hired town attorney provides a fresh insight into the community of El Modena and an external viewpoint on its citizens' "usual array of Machiavellian battles," as do excerpts from a diary writtten in the past. The characters are fully developed and individually motivated; the reader identifies with them easily. Robinson's writing ranks in the highest levels of the genre, and the last sentences of the book generate a soaring optimism. Taken together, the books of the trilogy invite interesting comparisons or their several worlds, but separately each is a completely independent, excellent story.

Engrossing story, fine writing and characterization.

This book is fantastic--I'm amazed that no one has reviewed it. The setting is Southern California in a future following an ecological collapse. Some will find it utopian, others will be disappointed to find no galactic empires, but everyone should enjoy this extremely well-written story and its finely-wrought, believable characters. Robinson debates technowhizzery versus the New Age, and finds no easy answers--indeed, the issue is still up for grabs at the end--but this is SF at its best, thought-provoking and intense. Still rates #2 on my all-time list, and I've read a ton of SF.

Utopian Gnats

This book is part of Robinson's 'Three Californias" triptych about alternate futures seen from the perspective of Orange County, California. Gold Coast is a dystopia, The Wild Shore is post-apocalyptic, and this book completes the thematic triangle as a utopia. Here we find a future that is a melding of socialism, capitalism, democracy, and strong ecological concerns. Personal income and business sizes have strict upper limits, everyone is required to devote some of their labor hours to community projects (usually involving some form of ecological cleanup), most people live as part of communal co-operatives, but at the same time people are free to chose their own jobs, live where they wish, have a voice in community affairs, and can say what they want.
Like most utopias, there are a few flies in the ointment, and it is around these that the story line is based. Here we find Alfredo, the town mayor, scheming a way to go beyond the personal income limit, and the company he is associated with has become involved in shady deals to try and sidestep the limits on company size. The object of the scheming is an undeveloped hill commanding a great aesthetic view of the town and valley it sits in, and the book starts with an attempt to rezone the hill for commercial development. The book's protagonist, Kevin, something of an idealist and nature lover, not terribly politically astute but stubborn, stalls the attempt, but the battle is joined. As counterpoint to the political battle, Kevin becomes romantically involved with Alfredo's long-time lover Ramona, who has just split up with Alfredo.
Unfortunately, these story threads are only mildly interesting. There is little work done to explore either the pluses or minuses of the envisioned society, Kevin's personal problems are not strong enough, do not have enough angst, to make the reader become terribly involved in them, the basic object of the battle, the hill, does not seem deserving of all the energy devoted to it. This seems to be a typical problem with utopian novels - at their heart, utopias are necessarily dull, not having any strong points of contention on which to base a story. All of the actions of this book seem somewhat inconsequential, the object of contention is really a molehill, not a mountain.
The prose style is easy, the main characters are reasonably well developed, the plot line is coherent. But this is at best an average book, not nearly as good as The Wild Shore.

Exuberant and engaging action, however wildly improbable.

In BIRDS OF PREY, it is the year 1667, and we are introduced to the 17-year old Englishman, Hal Courteney. Hal is a crewmember on his father's ship, the "Lady Edwina", as it sails the high seas off the southern tip of Africa. England is at war with the Dutch Republic, and the ship's captain, Sir Francis Courteney, has been given license by the British Admiralty to prey on Dutch trading ships of the United East India Company as they return to Amsterdam from the East Indies via the Dutch settlement at the Cape of Good Hope. Sir Francis captures a Dutch ship carrying the newly appointed Governor of Good Hope and his wife, Katinka. During the period when the Governor and his wife are held for ransom, Hal loses his virginity to Katinka, a sadistic, treacherous, highborn slut. (Well, good breeding isn't everything.) Subsequently, Sir Francis, Hal and the rest of the Lady Edwina's company are betrayed by a former ally, the Scottish Earl of Cumbrae, with the help of a former crewmember, Sam Bowles, and imprisoned at Good Hope. Sir Francis is brutally tortured and executed. Hal and a handful of survivors later escape, acquire another ship, and go on to defeat their primary tormentors, Cumbrae and a Dutch army colonel named Schreuder, against the backdrop of a war between the Christian Emperor of Ethiopia and the Moslem Sultan of Oman. Along the way, Hal inherits his father's captaincy and finds true love (as opposed to hormonal-driven sex with Katinka) - twice.

As painted by the author, Wilbur Smith, the chief characters of this swashbuckling adventure are almost caricatures. The "good guys" - principally Hal and his loyal buddies, Aboli, Ned, and Daniel - are brave, noble and heroic. The "bad guys" - Katinka, Governor van de Velde, Bowles, Cumbrae, and Schreuder - are cruel, dishonorable and totally vile. The action, much as in Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones film trilogy, is wildly improbable, especially over the book's latter half. Similarly, however, that same action is scripted with such exuberance and energy that it's totally engaging. Finally, I read to be transported to places that, in most cases, I will never visit. I doubt that I shall ever ply the Indian Ocean or South Atlantic aboard a frigate under sail. This book took me there in grand style.

His descriptions of Mexican politics and culture and American arrogance and expansion are right on target, but his unconvincing characters and wearisome plots make this a long journey on the dusty Santa Fe Trail. In 1822, teenage orphan Matthew Collins runs away from indenture in Illinois to seek his fortune as a trader on the famed trail. He's hired as a teamster, then a scout; he avoids being scalped by the Comanches; he learns to flatter and bribe the right officials. As the years pass, Matt, with his partner, Edward Waterman, becomes a prosperous and respected New Mexico businessman. Matt favors Mexican customs, marrying the beautiful daughter of a wealthy Mexican landowner and even becoming a Mexican citizen. While the marriage was for love, the change of citizenship was for business, with the result that Matt finds himself caught between two cultures and two loyalties, a dilemma that intensifies as an American war with Mexico becomes imminent in 1846. When war comes, Matthew is forced to choose which side he will support. Bauman does a masterful job portraying the events, people, politics and history of New Mexico; unfortunately there is little suspense and less action, and the characters move woodenly from one frontier conversation to the next.

Best Novel Ever Written about the Santa Fe Trail

There have been many novels about the Santa Fe Trail, most of which tell little if anything about the historic route, but Santa Fe Passage is based on extensive research and is by far the best historical novel about the Trail. Jon Bauman, an international lawyer with special interest in Latin America, has written a readable, entertaining, and informative story that rings true.
Trail historians will know the sources of many of his characters and their stories, including the first U.S. woman to travel the Trail with her family and operate a hotel in Santa Fe, a woman injured in a carriage accident who miscarries her child at Bent's Fort, a Jewish trader and merchant in Santa Fe, a Mexican woman who owns a gambling establishment and assists Mexican officials and American traders, a governor who is in and out of power in Santa Fe as changes occur in Mexico City, a village priest who opposes the Anglo influences, and the main character Matthew Collins who runs away from an apprenticeship and becomes a Santa Fe trader who marries into a prominent Mexican family and is selected by President James Polk and Senator Thomas Hart Benton to persuade the governor of New Mexico to allow Stephen W. Kearny's Army of the West to occupy Santa Fe without resistance in 1846.
Bauman has a good understanding of all three cultures affected by the Santa Fe Trail, and he creates a number of realistic characters, not stereotypes, for all of them: Anglo, Indian, and Mexican. He has researched the history of the Trail, with help from historian Mike Olsen, and the book is endorsed by historian David Weber. The interaction of the American traders with Mexican citizens is done well. Purists may argue that Bauman has moved some events in time and place (for example there was no Bowie Knife in 1826 and Raton Pass was not an option for a wagon train in that year), but this is creative fiction based on history; just enjoy it.
Not only is this finely-crafted, thoughtful, and sophisticated novel a good read, it will cause readers to want to know more about the history of the Trail. As one of the characters in the novel, Jack Marentette the mountain man, might say, "This is a splendiferous book."

A must read for New Mexicans!

Santa Fe Passage provides an outstanding perspective on the history of New Mexico. It brilliantly captures the cultural diversities between the Mexican and American peoples, their attitudes and expectations. The reader can eastily identify with the various characters as they progress through the tumultous times prior to the invasion by the U.S. army. It's a fascinating, historical novel. This truly should be a "must read" for all those living in New Mexico! And, a "highly recommended" read for anyone interested in the Spanish culture and its influence on the development of the United States.

History Brought to Life

Jon Bauman gives realistic details of the old West, including the tragic and the crude as well as beautiful descriptions which cause you to empathize with the characters. The culture clash betwen Anglo and Mexican is skillfully done and his story depicts how one person's decision can influence the outcome of historic events. Having hiked the entire Santa Fe Trail, and having written two books about it, I was thrilled to go down the Trail again with his story and recognize familiar sites, now with "real" characters in the experience.
