Pohl is a national resource

Fred Pohl has been writing and/or editing science fiction since 1939, and he's still at it. That's a career of 68 years -- so far. This collection shows why he was voted the title "Grand Master." Most of these thirty stories, actually, were first published in the 1970s or later; the most recent in 1996. And among his later stories are some of his best. Keeping the best for last is the Hugo-winning "Fermi and Frost," a somberly realistic and very engrossing nuclear war story. (Who else would have thought to point out that Iceland is the best equipped place in the world to survive a nuclear winter?) Also very, very good is "The Gold at the Starbow's End," about politics and the basic mechanism of intellectual creativity, and "The Greening of Bed-Stuy," about a future New York City. Just below those, in my opinion, is "Saucery," a rather gentle yarn about two con men dealing with an interplanetary threat to their livelihoods. On the other hand, "The Day the Icicle Works Closed" has always been popular but I don't regard it as one of Pohl's stronger efforts. "Some Joys Under the Star" is another swipe by the politically astute Pohl at American political realities -- very on-topic when it first appeared at the end of the Nixon Administration and getting that way again. Pohl does great adventures, too, and one of the best of those is "The Merchants of Venus," an early Heechee story. Of course, some stories don't age as well as others, and foremost among those -- in this collection, anyway -- are "The Celebrated No-Hit Inning," "The Middle of Nowhere," and "Servant of the People," all of them affected badly by the ways in which the world actually has changed since they were published. By and large, though, this is a collection of very high quality, showing off the author's stylistic elegance and ingenious plotting. Nor does he worry overmuch about whether something he wants to say is technically "science fiction" or not. Younger readers especially, those who didn't grow up with Pohl's stuff in the 1950s and `60s (I remember reading _The Space Merchants_ a few years after it appeared in 1954), will profit from it.

If you like Pohl's style, you'll be in heaven...

Frederik Pohl has been writing sci fi for a LONG time. Thus, it should come as no surprise that he has written many, many short stories, novellas, and books. We all have our favorites. For me, it is Gateway, hands down. I'm not sure Pohl would agree. Sometimes the favorite of the fan is not the same as the favorite of the author.

Platinum Pohl: The Collected Best Stories, is, obviously, a collection of stories. The hardback version is 464 word-packed pages of adventure. For Heechee fans, the opening story, "The Merchants of Venus," is a must... a prelude to Gateway. For the remainder of the book, it is a mixed bag.

Pohl has a style, and you sense it throughout. He focuses on people and behavior, and many of his stories tend to have an odd twist at the end. I like it, and find his stories very readable. However, a number of these stories seem not to fit the "sci fi" label. They are not bad, they're just not... "out there." A minor complaint.

Here's where it counts. I've read a number of his books. And when I saw this book in the library, BAM! I had to grab it and put it at the top of the reading pile.

entertaining thought provoking cautionary tales

Selecting only thirty tales from the fifty year career of Grand Master Frederik Pohl had to seem impossible as you want representation from the five different decades to show trends as well as quality. Obviously with a science fiction hall of famer like Mr. Pohl several editions of his best stories could easily be produced. No one will have any negative comments on the chosen thirty though some might feel a personal favorite was left out. As he has done throughout his career, most of the selections warn humanity about excesses that lead to a dark catastrophic future using hyperbole to make the case that there is no inclusive in extremism only a deadly future. Personal favorites include the "The Greening of Bed-Stuy" and "The Merchants of Venus". All the contributions are terrific, but stories like "Let the Ants Try" written in 1949 but set in 1960 has an eerie nuclear war time twist that make the audience think what if. A superb collection (based on last week in Montreal - probably banned in the White House as anti-patriotic), science fiction fans will appreciate that the greatness mantle fits Mr. Pohl; as demonstrated by these entertaining thought provoking cautionary tales.

About the Author

Very sad,made me cry

I read this book a couple of years ago under another title which I think was called The Worst Mother In The World. This is the only true crime book that I have ever read that actually made me cry.I consider myself pretty hardened to this type of reading but I felt so sorry for the children in this family having such an evil,nutcase of a mother. It's little wonder that children growing up in the violent and sick environment that these poor kids had turn out to be killers and develop severe mental problems. The thing that gets me,and you hear this all the time,is that although friends and neigbours and even family members knew that this mother was a sandwich short of a picnic - nobody tries to help these poor kids! This woman was a manipulative sadistic woman so consumed with jealousy that her daughters were prettier than her that she tortured them killing two out of three in the end.The worst thing is,is that she enlisted the help of her own sons to get rid of the bodies! These children endured severe beatings,starvation followed by mountains of food fed forcefully until they were sick and made to eat the vomit,they were drugged,made to drink enough alcohol until they passed out and eventually one of the daughters was shot by her own mother while being held in place by her two brothers because her mother was a lousy shot an didn't want to miss. Not only was she shot but as she didn't die,her mother nursed her back to health.I won't tell you how the bullet was removed as I don't want to ruin the next set of unimaginable events for you. This book is not one of the most well written that I have read but the story makes up for that.Very sad,Your worst nightmare come true,I only hope that someone does to the mother what she did to her kids.Makes you gasp.Will stay in your mind.A must for all true crime readers but not for the faint hearted.

WHATEVER MOTHER SAYS

This book is EXCELLENTLY well written. No dry parts at all. I couldn't put it down. All about the WORST mother ever! It gives you a look at each of her children, and each of her husbands (she was actually acquitted of murdering her first one!), as well as telling the story of her, from childhood.
I thought it was wonderful the way, he wrote about her children, especially the daughters. It made me feel as though I knew them, and it made me feel great empathy for them. They had their own hopes and dreams, and it's incredibly sad they couldn't live to have freedom.
I CAN'T BELIEVE ANYONE WOULD GIVE THIS BOOK LESS THAN 5 STARS, JUST BECAUSE WENSLEY CLARKSON DIDN'T WAIT UNTIL AFTER HER TRIAL, OR THAT IT WAS "YUCKY" Really! What do you expect from a true crime book? If you have delicate sensitivities you shouldn't read this genre.
Well researched. Excellent book. One of the most gripping I've read in a while.

Family cruelty in its' most shocking form!

A good ending to a great trilogy

When it comes to adventure novels and novels about Africa (especially South Africa and Zimbabwe (Rhodesia)) no one can compare to Wilbur Smith. Wilbur Smith's understanding and knowledge of the people, animals and history of Africa is unmatched.
Wilbur Smith's first novel was When The Lion Feeds (and is still one of my all time favorite novels). When The Lion Feeds introduces us to his most memorable character-Sean Courtney. The series starts in the mid to late 1800's when Sean and his brother Gary are children. Without going into too much detail, the first book covers young Sean's life through the Zulu wars and the great gold rush. After the gold rush (and after Sean looses millions and millions of dollars) Sean starts his career as an ivory hunter (this is just prior to the boer wars). There is one scene in "When The Lion Feeds" where a close friend of Sean's sucomes to rabies and is one of the most vivid and frightening narratives that I've read). "The Sound of Thunder" is the next book in the series, and without getting into to much detail, deals with the Boer Wars, and his estrainment with his twin brother Gary and his son Dirk.
Then of course comes "A Sparrow Falls". "A Sparrow Falls" begins in the trenches of France during WWI where Sean meats Mark Anders who comes to take the place of Seans estranged son Dirk (and his dead son Michael). "A Sparrow Falls" is about the building of South Africa after WWI. It covers everything from the start of the unions in South Africa, to the start of the Game Department. All three books ("When The Lion Feeds", "The Sound Of Thunder", and "A Sparrow Falls") cover the history of South Africa and the adventures and fortunes of Sean Courtney from the mid 1800 to the early 1900's. The only reason I gave "A Sparrow Falls" a four star rating is because it put to an end my favorite series.
I have read all of Wilbur Smith's novels, and this trilogy is by far my favorite (although his series about the Ballantynes and Rhodesia, "A Falcon Flies", "Men Of Men", "The Angels Weep", and "The Leopard Hunts in Darkness" comes in a close second). Unfortunately, some of these books are no longer in print and can be hard to find. I think "When The Lion Feeds" is no longer in print, and "A Sparrow Falls" can be very difficult to find, but Amazon did manage to find it for me after looking for almost a year.
This review is pretty vague because it covers about 60 years of South African history (a very active time) and a very complex character (Sean Courtney). Suffice to say, if you like adventure books, and if you have any interest in the history of South Africa, you should run out and find these books (If you can).

not great wilbur smith

im an avid wilbur smith fan and i have read all his books, starting ten years ago. due to lack of availability, i have had to acquire many of them out of country, including canada, britain, the far east, and south africa, where i started reading them. it seems like wilbur only became popular in the US with river god. I consider a sparrow falls to be his weakest book. after reading a number of books on south african history, fictionalized or not, i find a sparrow falls to be much fiction, little history, as opposed to lion feeds and sound of thunder. its like this story was made only to finish off the series and tie up the loose ends. my favorite of his novels were the next five courtneys and elephant song. of course, anyone interested in the fictionalized history of southern africa, the worlds most fascinating, also has to read the covenant. try robert ruark as well for eastern africa.

In my opinion this is the best of the Courtney novels.

This is the third novel dealing with Sean Courntney and is the best of the Courtney novels. To me Sean is a much more likeable character than in previous novels, while Dirk is as evil as any of the arch villans that Smith has had in any of his books.
However, this book tends to be difficult to find in print, but if you get an oppertunity to read it, do so, because it will make the other books that deal with the Courtneys more enjoyable.

My friend gave me this book and said I'd like it. I'd like to say "Thank you" because it has given me many, many hours of wonderful reading. Not only did I read through Nothing but Velvet at record speed, but I went out and bought almost allof her other books I could get my hands on!

Routine.

I'll go out on that well-known limb and take my stand, "This book was just ordinary." I suspect it would have made a good short story, but as a full length novel it suffered. The beginning was captivating, it held my attention, but somewhere along the way the story began to stumble. The book was too long for the ungarnished storyline.
The novel opens well - a duke callously murdered and his legitimate heir framed by an unscrupulous brother. The question the reader ponders throughout the book was "why?". What pressure, what insufferable issue, compelled a brother to hate and despise both his father and his sibling? Unfortunately, the author never answers the question.
Moving on, the novel continues to intrigue the reader. Years slip away and the falsely accused hero, Jason Sinclair, returns from the depths of misery. His mission: to clear his name, take back his realm title, regain his honor, and appreciate his freedom. To strengthen such a feat he must kidnap and imprison the novel's heroine, Velvet Moran. Now we have the recipe for spice -- a remote hunting lodge, two very attractive people, and hours of quality time together. Now this is the stuff for that long Canadian winter. But alas, the secluded adventure is short lived, unfulfilled, and sadly, the end of Martin's catchy storyline.

I'm not sure I can add much to what's already been reviewed but I am a fan of Kat Martin. It simply has her name on it and I am putting it in my shopping cart.() I enjoyed the 'battle' Velvet gave Jason. When she was abducted she was determined and I liked the fact she wasn't a wimpy little twit. Apparentely, so did Jason......
The story develops and it's relationship is built on love, respect, and shear belief in innocence even though neither realize it at the timeI it kept me turning the pages.
Jason and Velvet..........(sigh). Where to begin. If you've not read Kat Martin then you should be warned, this book is unlike most romance authors. Usually the hero and heroine meet, fall in love, have the most wonderful sex of their lives, and something occurs to divide them; here enters mistrust and suspicions. It then takes half the book for the trust to be rebuilt and most of the time I'm saying to myself, "how stupid can you be???? . Get over it". I often read those type of books, because mostly that's what's out there. Call me masochistic but it's basically the norm for romance books. Since I've started reading romance novels 4 years ago I've discovered the story line has its' advantages but I enjoy a change ever now and again. This is different. Ms Martin has managed to give it all. Suspense, love, (even though the male is too stupid to realize it for a while) steamy love scenes, and trust (on Velvets part anyway). Velvet has such belief in Jason, there were often times I wanted to smack him and tell him to stop being such a nin come poop. I guess the author did her job if she created that response but when all is said and done, it's a NICE story. It gives you the mystery, the love scenes, and the happily ever after. I would recommend this book to anyone ()...

Born in 1877 in Hopkinsvile, Kentucky, Edgar Cayce had a seventh-grade education, yet was able to repeat complex and technical medical jargon when under a trance. In this state, he was said to heal many of the people who came seeking his counsel with his recommendations for medical treatment. Cayce soon began to talk about spiritual notions such as Atlantis, reincarnation, dreams, astrology, and more. He would also predict some of the more astounding events of the twentieth century, such as World Wars and the Great Depression.

The Washington Post wrote: "His words have inspired faith in spirituality, which for many people is more powerful than science." Called the "sleeping prophet" and "America's greatest psychic," Cayce, who died in 1945, may have been the first to usher in what is now known as the New Age Movement. More than fifty years after his death, his work continues to influence our lives in powerful new ways.

Excellent introduction to metaphysics

This is an excellent introduction to the psychic dimension and metaphysics in general.
In part one, the author explores some universal concepts that serve to explain the nature of reality and how psychic awareness is a natural part of that reality. The work of Fritjof Capra, Gary Zukav, Lawrence LeShan, Rupert Sheldrake and Carl Jung is referred to in these chapters and it makes interesting reading.
Part two discusses some of the more common psychic experiences and how to evoke them - through intuition, dreams, meditation and hypnosis. I found the chapters on dreams and dreaming the most interesting. When we dream, our vibrational pattern shifts and we tune to a different spectrum of reality. And if you want to become psychic in a graceful manner, you must allow it to grow out of the practice of meditation.
Part three probes the role of the body, mind and soul in psychic awareness. It discusses the hologram, morphogenetic fields, the conscious, subconscious, superconscious and infinite mind. It also includes a "second verse" to the children's bedtime prayer "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the lord my soul to keep" in these words received in trance:
"I thy child forever play, about thy knees at close of day, within thy arms I now shall creep, and learn thy wisdom while I sleep."
Part four provides some experiments for the reader that wishes to venture into this exciting realm, and discusses the ultimate purpose of psychic awareness. It includes planning, dream recording, using a pendulum, mental telepathy, open channelling and cultivating one's spirituality. The book concludes with a discussion of psychic awareness as harbinger of global changes, followed by a bibliography and index.
This is a highly impressive text, dealing with all the relevant aspects of the psychic realm and how to cultivate one's psychic powers. The style is engaging throughout and easy to understand. I highly recommend it as a sensible guide to those who are interested in metaphysics but confused by the large number of disciplines and books available.

An eye opener

I bought this book a week ago at a local bookstore.

I read it in two days. It is a real delight! In 236 pages, Reed covers the most of ESP, giving credit to hypnosis as a natural channel to connect with our unconscious.

The book is an eye opener (third eye?) on the infinite possibilities that every human being has to connect with his inner mind. It is right there, hidden inside and so easy to reach. With some dicipline and your own audio tape, the teachings of this book can really have an increadible impact on your life.

Buy it, read it and apply it (get a pendulum too!) this is my best recommendation

Dark, gritty fiction

First off, if you haven't read Peter Watts' first novel, "Starfish", don't start with "Maelstrom". While this is theoretically a stand-alone novel, the reader unfamiliar with "Starfish" will miss out on a tremendous amount of back-story and character development. ...
As for "Maelstrom" itself, Watts has easily cleared the high bar he set with his first novel. All too often, sequels are rehashes of old conflict, but that is not the case here at all. Watts takes his already complex characters from the first novel and adds several more layers of texture; at the same time he adds just enough new characters to keep things interesting. These characters are equally well developed, and overall, Watts' writing is even sharper than in the first book.
The writing has to be sharper, because this is a much more complicated novel than the first. While "Starfish" took place in the relatively limited space of a deep ocean outpost, and dealt primarily with human interactions, "Maelstrom" sprawls across the Pacific and North America and a significant portion of the action takes place in cyberspace. Moreover, the plot is significantly more complicated. I don't want to get into it in too much detail, as doing so would ruin much of "Starfish" for those who haven't read it. But the general theme of this novel, like its predecessor, is the impact that the unforeseen consequences of exponentially growing technology can have on humans as a species and on the planet as a whole. In a dystopian setting of environmental havoc and human violence, two new scourges have emerged. One is spawned by nature, the other, inadvertently, by man. The result is a bizarre, but believable synergy that threatens the entire biosphere. It was particularly interesting how Watts explored the nature of consciousness by subtly comparing the burgeoning life of a piece of code with the flawed memories of the main character.
By now you may have guessed that there is a lot of science in this novel, and you'd be right. There is a great deal that is cutting edge, and even more that is purely speculative. Watts makes use of some pretty heavy biology and AI science that may intimidate readers at first blush. It would be a mistake to avoid this novel for that reason because the science is just there to set the stage for the story. If you understand the detail of it, it definitely adds many intriguing twists; but if you only understand it at the surface level, you could still easily follow the story. That's the beauty of Watts as a writer: he's pigeon hold as hard-SF, but the SF is just a means to the end of writing incredibly complex, beautiful characters struggling with problems we can easily empathize with. Finally, Watts has included an appendix discussing the key science in some detail, and also provides a bibliography of sources he used.
"Maelstrom" is an outstanding novel set in a believable, terrifying future. It was undeniably entertaining and I tore through it at a breathless pace. It also left me thinking about technology and its impacts in some new ways. Watts is no technophobe, but he makes a strong point about the lack of responsibility in many arenas of scientific endeavor. "Maelstrom" is a must read for anyone who enjoys a great story, rich characters and a thoughtful message.

One of the finest Science Fiction works in recent years!

(Somewhat sheepishly) I must admit that I read Science Fiction books by the ton, and have been doing so for the better part of thirty years. The "discovery" of a brilliant piece of writing such as Peter Watts' MAELSTROM is all too rare an experience.
Following his more conventional novel, STARFISH (also excellent), MAELSTROM is perhaps a work of inspired surrealism more than it is a straightforward example of "hard" Science Fiction. (This is not to take away from Watts' completely credible and coherent account of a future world devastated by the enimical effect of a nasty micro-organism that manages, by means of rapid "virus"-like replication and mutation, to infiltrate pretty much every aspect of existence.)
Watts exhibits a flexibility and richness of imagination that sets his writing apart from the dry and often academic atmosphere presented in many works of the "hard" genre.
I dislike plot summaries and hence will not offer one here. Let me note, however, that although the plot becomes a labyrinth in itself, the story-line never lags. Descriptions of both abstract theory and "actual" events are vivid and exact.
Perhaps of greatest importance, Watts draws his characters with considerable care. Emotion (and its role in memory -links to an individual's past) plays a key role in the work. The persons presented in the novel are anything but the cardboard cutouts that often haunt works of such theoretical inclination.
Quite simply, MAELSTROM is one of the finest Science Fiction novels of the last ten years and an entirely fascinating read.

Extraordinary hard SF with a dark, fast storyline.

In this age of anthrax scares and threats of biological terrorism, this novel is not only fortuitously topical-but twice as frightening by the relevance of the subject matter. `Maelstrom' returns to the characters and story begun in Peter Watts' `Starfish,' where a disease vector from the distant pre-human past was discovered in a deep ocean rift. A secret underwater nuclear strike was employed in an attempt at the sterilization/containment of the `disease,' but Lenie Clarke has survived and has inadvertently become the Typhoid Mary carrying the potential death of the human race.

We learn much about Clarke's interior topography as she tries to make her way home, possessed by a desire for revenge against the forces that ordered her `sterilization.' Inadvertently she becomes the Meltdown Madonna, a media/web induced celebrity and urban myth rolled in one-a rage filled carrier of death.

Peter Watts fine writing has created a genre others call cyberpunk noir, but it is really much more than that. And it defies simple labeling. `Maelstrom' is dark, gritty and vivid-yet eerily redemptive in it's own way. Highly Recommended, even if you missed `Starfish.'

Ancient Rome had its famed Five Good Emperors--Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius, for those keeping track. And while science fiction might not have Edward Gibbons around to dole out similar, agreed-upon honors, everyone pretty much accepts the canonization of a few founding fathers: Asimov, Heinlein, Wells, and Bradbury all make the short list, as does--always--the venerable and venerated Sir Arthur C. This may be the single-author sf collection of the decade, even though the decade has barely begun, for it contains all the shorter fiction by Sir Arthur C. Clarke that he wishes to preserve, and he is one of the authentic pioneers and shapers of sf in English. Although most of these stories date from between 1946 and 1970, seven earlier tales, rescued from what would now be called fanzines, extend coverage back to 1937, and a few snippets stretch it toward the present. At least two dozen stories bear titles that are household words among sf readers--"The Sentinel" (progenitor of the 2001 saga), "The Nine Billion Names of God," "The Songs of Distant Earth," etc., not to mention all of the whimsical Tales from the White Hart. The stories demonstrate Clarke's dazzling and unique combination of command of the language, scientific and other kinds of erudition, and inimitable wit. Add early-twentieth-century English philosopher-novelist Olaf Stapledon's influence, which Clarke freely acknowledges, and it is possible to feel that if the term sense of wonder didn't exist, it would have to be now to describe what Clarke's majestic narratives evoke. Let's start with the surest way to be excruciatingly dull: bibliographical details. Indeed, this review will consist mostly of such stuff. Whatever I have to say about the short stories themselves, I have said it (or will say it) in the reviews of the separate collections.

This book includes exactly 114 pieces of short fiction that span the truly impressive 62 years (1937-99). The collection is not complete and it does not contain every single piece of short fiction Arthur Clarke ever wrote, but the omissions are negligible. More of them later.

Between 1953 and 1972, his most productive years in the genre, Arthur Clarke published six short story collections comprised of pieces that had appeared in various magazines and anthologies fairly shortly before. These contain altogether 95 short stories distributed as follows:

Expedition to Earth (1953, 11 stories)
Reach for Tomorrow (1956, 12)
Tales from the White Hart (1957, 15)
The Other Side of the Sky (1958, 24)
Tales of Ten Worlds (1962, 15)
The Wind from the Sun (1972, 18)

[Of course the list above omits collections such as The Nine Billion Names of God (1967) and Of Time and Stars (1972) for the simple reason that they only reprinted stories that had previously appeared in other of Clarke's collections.]

All of these 95 pieces are included in The Collected Stories. Please note that there are some alternative titles which are highly misleading. For instance, ''The Curse'', originally published under this title in Reach for Tomorrow, appears here as ''Nightfall''. I may mention in passing that, for the sake of clarity, I omit any references to magazines and anthologies, regarding Clarke's own collections as the definitive source for his stories.

Four other collections must be mentioned. They were published between 1973 and 1989 and consist almost - but not quite - of previously published stuff. The exceptions are marked as "new" (note the quotation marks) because almost always they were written a good deal earlier. Altogether there are 12 such stories which are of interest for the present discussion:

The Best of Arthur C. Clarke 1937-1971 (1973, 4 "new" stories)
The Sentinel(1983, 2)
The Wind from the Sun (1987 edition, 3)
Tales from Planet Earth(1989, 3)

Of these 12 "latecomers", 10 are reprinted in The Collected Stories. The exceptions - again - are no big loss. One is a movie outline of "The Songs of Distant Earth" (from The Sentinel), which looks much better as a short story which is of course included here, and the other is a short sketch titled "When the Twerms Came", which originally appeared in Clarke's non-fiction book The View from Serendip (1978) and was later reprinted in the 1987 edition of The Wind from the Sun.

Doing some elementary maths shows that 105 of the stories included in The Collected Stories have previously appeared in no fewer than 10 different collections with Clarke's short fiction, yet the latter contained but two relatively insignificant pieces not included here. To cut the long story short, this collection is not complete, but it definitely deserves the strong adjective "definitive".

For the rest nine pieces this edition seems to be the first appearance in book form, or at least in a book by Arthur Clarke alone. Of course there are exceptions here, too. The novella "The Lion of Comarre", though published in anthology as early as 1949, appeared in Clarke's book only in 1968, coupled with "Against the Fall of Night" (1948), which was later to become the novel The City and the Stars; since the earlier piece is more like a novel, it is rightly not included here. The other exception is "The Steam-powered Word Processor" which had previously appeared in the magnificent collection of Clarke's non-fiction writings Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (1999) and in his science fictional autobiography Astounding Days (1989), but not in anything that can safely be called short story collection. This is just another reminder that the border line between fiction and non-fiction in Clarke's oeuvre is not always straight and easy to distinguish. One may just as well regret that "Report on Planet Three", "So, You're Going to Mars?" and "Vacation in Vacuum" are not included here, either. They all can be found both in two excellent collections of essays: Report on Planet Three (1972) and The Challenge of the Spaceship (1959).

(Having mentioned ''Against the Fall of Night'', it is worth noting that The Locus Index to Science Fiction for 2001 gives the names of two other pieces of short fiction by Clarke, in addition to those already mentioned, that have been omitted in the present collection: ''At the Mountains of Murkiness'' (1940) and ''Tales from the 'White Hart'' (1990): The Jet-Propelled Time Machine'' (1990). Anyway, even when these are taken into account, the omissions remain negligible.)

So far as can be ascertained online, the rest seven pieces (marked with ** above) have never previously appeared in any book of Clarke, even though only three of them seem never to have been printed at all ("How We Went to Mars", "Reverie" and "Holiday on the Moon"). At any rate, it is nice to have these stories here. Some of them are of interest because they later became novels ("The Hammer of God") and some because of their historical importance. "Improving the Neighbourhood" had the honour to be the first science fiction published - at least intentionally - by the (perhaps a trifle too) august Nature magazine; it also was Clarke's last story as he was nearly 82 years old at the time of writing. Actually it is no story at all, for it is much more like a sketch for one, but it shows yet again that Clarke could, and did, say something interesting even in his slightest pieces.

The edition itself is handsomely produced and rather convenient for its mammoth size; of course you should avoid paperback editions because they, inevitably, are difficult to handle when the page count chases the 1000-mark. The editorial work, however, is a trifle mediocre. Almost every story has a pithy prefatory note by Clarke that is well worth reading, and his Foreword is welcome too. But each story also has another note, printed under the title, which is supposed to give some bibliographical information. Unfortunately, most of these "notes" are highly repetitive with Clarke's and, worse, they sometimes give incomplete or misleading information about the publication history.

Of course the collection - spanning 62 years of writing, if I may remind you - is uneven, but those who degrade it for that reason alone are missing the point completely. Clarke's very early stories, namely those written up to 1946, are certainly not on the level of the later ones, but they are firmly in the minority - and "Travel By Wire" is not a bad achievement for a lad of twenty, don't you think? The quarter of a century between 1946 and 1971 represents Arthur Clarke at the peak of his formidable powers as a short story writer. The staggering 101 pieces resulted, four a year on the average, and the most important thing about them is not that they are uneven, as this is inevitable, but that Clarke is uncommonly often at his best.

Clarke's stupendous range of forms, moods and techniques is another thing to savour while perusing this volume. He wrote everything from half-page bad jokes ("The Longest Science-fiction Story Ever Told") to thought-provoking novellas of considerable length ("The Songs from Distant Earth", "Guardian Angel"). He is often accused of being too dry or too scientific. Neither could be further from the truth. Even Clarke's most technical stories, containing a great deal of popular science, such as "Technical Error", "Out of the Sun", "The Fires Within" of "A Meeting with Medusa", offer a lot more than mere technical stuff. The popular accusation of lack of characterization is all moonshine as well; "The Parasite", "A Walk in the Dark" and "Breaking Strain", to name just three, are there to prove it. And when we are talking about mind-blowing experience that stretch one's imagination beyond time and space, Clarke can at best be equaled, but I don't really think he could be surpassed. Examples here are numerous, some of the most famous ("The Sentinel", "The Star") will do very nicely. Last but not least, when he wants to, Clarke can be perfectly and deliciously hilarious. "Trouble with the Natives", "Loophole" or most of the "Tales from the White Hart" are uproarious fun to read.

There's no need to elaborate further. Here's the bottom line. If you are a Clarke aficionado, The Collected Stories is a must for your shelves, repetitions and all. If you have never read anything by Clarke, you could hardly do better than this volume. It may prove to be the beginning of a quest that will last for the rest of your life, or it may convince you that this is guy is not really worth reading: the choice is yours. If you, for some strange reason, are familiar with Clarke's novels and/or essays, but have no idea of his short stories, you certainly cannot do better than to grab this volume.

A Wonderful Near Comprehensive Collection

Sir Arthur C. Clarke (December 16, 1917 - March 19, 2008) was one of the masters of Science Fiction. For over 50 years he wrote stories which amazed and delighted readers, and this collection helps bring together his short fiction in one place for fans to enjoy. Early editions of this collection were fraught with error, and so it has developed a poor reputation. From what I can tell, though, these problems have been corrected, and this is now a great collection for those who want to experience not only his greatest works, but also those which are not so great. You can see his development as a writer within these pages.

The quality of Clarke's work varies quite a bit from the earlier fanzine stories to his excellent work later on, which results in the overall collection having variable strength. There also appear to be some stories omitted, which makes this less than a complete collection, though certainly most of his works are here. You will certainly find great works such as "The Nine Billion Names of God", "The Sentinel", "The Star", "A Meeting with Medusa", and others, but for me those works are already easily found elsewhere, and the interest in this work was being able to read some of his rarer works, even if they weren't his greatest stories.

I can easily see why some would give this work less than five stars, especially if they had an earlier edition which had so many spelling errors and other mistakes in it. However, for me, it rates five stars because of the near comprehensive look at the short fiction from one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time.

I got my copy in the spring of this year 2008. I love the book. Arthur Clarke is a wonderful storyteller His knowledge and inmagination in the field of science /fiction is great The stories are interesting, funny and suspenceful. They will make you think and let your imagination fill in the blanks. I have given 3 copies as gifts to my son and two brothers and they also like the book very much. I also like that they are short stories so that I can read and finish a story quickly.
