Would have been better if...
By M. Renlund
the main characters from the other books had been in this one.

I have enjoyed reading about Charlie and Lia's exploits around the world, the high tech gear they use, and the people who support them. All the way from the first book of the series have I followed them. I was excited for a new "chapter" in their story.

Unfortunately for me, the main characters I know and love are largely absent from this book's pages. More time is spent setting up the story, and then bolstering the story than is spent following Charlie trying to end the crisis. Lia seems to only be in as an afterthought.

There just seemed to be little to no real imagination in the writing. Plot lines were obvious, and it didn't have the feel of a techno-thriller.

There were a few great moments, but that was about it. It just wasn't worth my time in the final analysis.

Where is Jim DeFilice?
By George N. Lawrence
The first six of the Deep Black series with coauthor Jim DeFilce were great: full of action and the repeating zaney characters. With coauthor William Keith the beautiful but ill-tempered Lia DeFrancesca has all but disappeared. Charlie Dean mostly shows up at the end to shoot a few people. Rubin does have a small part, but not a particularly interesting one. And horror of horrors Coonts and Keith have killed off the loveable jokester Tommy Karr in their first collaboration Artic Gold--also a disappointment.

My advice is stick with the first six with Jim DeFilce who has injected energy and entertaining character development with other authors including Richard Marchinko, Larry Bond, and Dale Brown. He is also good on his own, for example Warbreaker.

I am not buying another Coonts/Keith collaboration.

Cross "Airport" with the Achille Lauro incident and it might sound like this
By Daniel Berger
I never don't like a Deep Black novel and this one is no exception.

Jihadi terrorists simultaneously hijack a British cruise liner and a nearby freighter loaded with reprocessed plutonium headed for Japan. What their goal is isn't clear, but you know it's got to be horrible.

So, it's a little bit "Airport" and a little bit "The Love Boat" crossed with the real-life Achille Lauro cruise ship hijacking of the 1980s, in which the elderly, wheelchair-bound Leon Klinghoffer was shot and dumped over the side.

This is a high-tech ship, with every passenger trackable from the microchip in their bracelets, every inch of ship monitored by cameras -- and the whole system accessible through a ship's security officer extorted by a kidnapping.

The good guys have a couple of people aboard -- two MI-5 agents investigating a murder back at the harbor, and a British agent seconded to NSA's Deep Black team who is on board, posing as a tourist, to help NSA penetrate its system. They do their best to suss out what's going on and report back without getting caught.

Meanwhile the cruise features the estranged couple trying to get back together, the prima donna rock star whose reckless lifestyle a la Spears and Lohan has a TV news crew in tow waiting for her to melt down, her diva-weary manager, a group of old lady tourists, the ship security officer on the make -- the usual disaster-film ensemble. One feature player: a robot named Rosie who can not only deal cards in the ship's casino, but banter and flirt with the customers as well.

NSA's William Rubens wants to put Deep Black's new Black Cat commando team into play. But he's stymied on one side of the Atlantic by an egotistical British general who wants to lead and get the glory, and on the other side by a U.S. president happy to let them so that he can avoid risks as he harvests the PR value of Ending Bush's Horrible Genocidal War in Iraq to signal a happy new age of American moderation in the Middle East.

Rubens, seeing a disaster in the making and knowing meanwhile the unique value his all-penetrating communications can contribute to any raid, must gamble on getting Charlie Dean and the new Black Cat team into place to help free the cruise ship without killing thousands of passengers and maybe contaminating the entire East Coast.

The technology as usual is up to the minute, plus all the inside intelligence poop presumably true or close to it. Does the U.S. really have a secret Mach 6 spy plane that flies at the edge of space taking pictures with far better resolution than even spy satellites can?

I particularly like the scene where the commandos do a high altitude parachute drop over the North Atlantic at night to hit the cruise ship. Totally bad-ass.

The Powerful Heroine: Reviews for Down Among the Dead AND Kill Her Again
By Peter A. Balaskas, author of The Grandmaster and In Our House
I would usually write a review for an individual book that I have recently read. But in this particular case, I have to make an exception with KILL HER AGAIN and DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN because of Browne's uncanny growth as a supernatural thriller author, specifically when it comes to the portrayal of female protagonists.

Browne's storytelling abilities are incredibly unique in terms of the characters, plotline, pacing, his descriptive power and especially his dialogue. But when he wrote KILL HER AGAIN and DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN (which I read consecutively), Browne excellently creates two powerful women who are placed in extraordinary circumstances. With Anna McBride(KILL HER AGAIN), we see a tough, no-nonsense FBI agent who fears for her own sanity because of nightmarish visions she experiences. Browne ups the ante with DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN's Beth Crawford, an LA prosecutor who suffers memory loss (caused by brain trauma), resulting in her trying to solve a mystery that involves her missing sister and a mass murder at a Mexican desert.

What is brilliant about these two novels is Browne interweaves a realistic strength within these two characters without them losing their empathy, compassion and their femininity. Too often have I read (and especially seen on TV) thrillers and crime dramas where the heroines try to behave like men---as though they received a shot of testosterone---in the effort to show strength and courage. Browne doesn't do this: he creates three dimensional women who are both strong AND vulnerable. And by maintaining this balance, readers are drawn into the stories even more.

Needless to say, Browne doesn't ignore the heroine's male counterparts/love interests. Both men compliment the heroines beautifully and the chemistry that is shown in both books are truly superb, showing once again that Robert Browne is an artist of the written word.

I couldn't put it down! Great twists, turns and fabulous characters.
By Imaginary
DOWN AMONG THE DEAD MEN was wonderful! I downloaded it to my Kindle a little after midnight and thought I'd just read a chapter or two and turn out the light, but I couldn't put it down. At 6:15 in the morning I finished. I haven't done that in a very long time. It was a fantastic read. Great twists, turns and fabulous characters. I'll definitely be checking out more of Mr. Browne's books but I won't be starting them at midnight! From now on I'll start reading in the daylight hours. I've learned my lesson!

Standing Ovation for R.G.Browne!
By C.A.Beck
Robert Gregory Browne's, "The Innocent Ones", first and foremost, grabbed my attention right from the beginning as I have lived in Arizona, and San Diego County, thus, mixed cultures of the Mexican and American people are my normal zone, cross-country crimes an ever present reality, and I really loved the Mexican "street-slang", and words used throughout the book - understood and appreciated! When the two story lines merge into one, wow, totally awesome concept. With first-hand knowledge of the power of destructive cults, I commend Mr. Browne on his excellent research and insight into how they operate, and "what a tangled web they must weave" to carry on ALL the illegal activities they engage in! Also struggling with brain injury recovery myself, I was just "one" with the heroine in this story. My Kindle went everywhere with me for 24hrs. This book so accurately demonstrates the absolute cruelty and appalling control and depravity of cults controlled, absolutely, by a charismatic leader, and exposes people to what depths they will sink to in the name of their so-called "god". Get this book and read it today! This author did his research, and it is a horrifying portrayal of the active cults enslaving, torturing and killing many innocents in the world today. 5 glowing stars and a standing ovation! Thank you, RGB!

When she isn't writing, she tends her flower gardens, watches horses romp outside her home, or spends time with the family and pets she fills her life with. She lives in the rolling hills of Kentucky.

Was expecting better....
By P. Madan
I truly was hoping for a better story. LL's standards keep dropping and I just feeling like shaking some sense into her. Like her previous novels, LL made bloopers. If you've read Enigma (the prologue to this book) you know what I'm talking about. One minute Tey is 28 and the next she's 30. One minute she met Jordan before killing her father, the next she met him when she was killing her father. And then there are the bloopers of Jordan's age, who his father is (kept calling his father Grandpop), how many brothers he has (1 not 2). The bloopers really ruined the book for me.

I wanted to throw the book across the room many many many times because of LL's ineptitude. I know LL's a better writer than this and I wish she would show us that. Live Wire is more erotica than romance. Jordan and Tey keep having sex, which I get, but seriously, it's like they can't have one conversation without ripping their clothes off. And Jordan, I wish I could just smack LL for what she did to him. He's supposed to be this awesome commander, a real strategist, a man who would do anything for his team, an alpha male if you will. But all I saw was an idiot that called love an illusion because some girl played him when he was a teenager. I was like, really? Seriously? Some girl played him when he was 16 and he's still not over it. What an idiot. And explain to me why his mother dying and Caroline dying made him not believe in love. Heck, it should have had the opposite effect. When you see someone love so deeply and truly that not even their deaths make the love fade away... that's real love, not an illusion.

Also, I didn't like the way Jordan treated Tey. He warned other men away from her and continued having sex with whoever he could get his hands on. I was like, really? He doesn't want her but the though of anyone else having her made him livid.
Lastly, LL kept saying Irish eyes but Jordan and Tey don't seem to have the connection that Sabella and Noah did.

In conclusion, this book could have been better. A WHOLE LOT better. I really do wish LL would get a better proofreader. Heck, maybe even contact Nalini Singh. You don't see bloopers in Singh's books and her books are much much more complicated than LL's.

Borrow this book from the library, it's not worth spending money on. Not even a dollar.

Fantastic Dirty Harlequin Novel 2.5 Stars!
By Jessie Potts
Ok sorry about the title, but I noticed that especially in the last book Lora Leigh seems to want to switch publishing companies. Instead of writing a romance where sex is used to enhance the plot or the characters feelings, I'm starting to feel like Leigh is using the plot as a filler for a sex sandwich and is using her books as a way of expressing some kinks she wants to try out. I mean the last book was bad enough with the breast milk during their scenes together, but now Jordan seems almost a caricature of himself as he `dominates' Tehya. I was actually rolling my eyes at the bedroom scenes, no blushing no embarrassment, just wishing I could thumb through them (which would have taken 10 pages a piece) until I got back to the main storyline.

I was excited about Jordan's story; I mean he's been with us since the Navy Seals books. I was a little disappointed... no I was very disappointed, but not surprised. I was expecting this with the way the last couple/few books have been going. They really aren't even that good of erotica novels because her earlier Feline Breed series that was published was lot better and more well written. For those of you who are looking for a quick easy, no brainer, quasi hot read then I'm sure you'll enjoy this, especially if you're a diehard Leigh fan. For those of us who remember the early Breed and Navy Seal stories, then this is just not up to par.

same old same old LL
By Bonnie Bear
Okay so the hero, Jordan, is in love with the heroine(name is too stupid to type up
)but he doesnt know it/doesnt want to admit it. sound familiar? (Renegade, Maverick). He thinks the heroine only thinks she loves him and he's been so burned in the past he cant love anymore. Yawn. But they find time to have sex, every two paragraphs. And what is up with the sex in Leighs books getting progressively more grosss than hot, it reads like a screenplay for a bad porno. I love hot erotic sex, when done right(Emma Hollly), it enhances the story and adds depth to the characters and their relationship. Because you want people who not only are great together but are also hot in bed. These two are nothing like that.

Their dialogue is mind numbing. Seriously. He says a sentence, then she repeats it. Also, the word" quirked lips" is used ALOT. I like Lora Leigh. Ive read eighty percent of her novels so im fairly familiar with her writing style. the first elite ops book, Wildcard, was great. Nice story, with characters who had really deep chemistry, hot sex and seemed to have a real meaningful connection. Every books shes written after is all downhill.

Her books these days seem to be recycled from past books, with names and places changed. Its been soo long since I read an original novel with original plot line from her. Forget about the thriller plotline, at least give the romance some depth and substance but even that is lacking. Its a shame since I really liked the character Jordan and I was looking forward to his story. Its a shame how utterly this author doesnt care anymore and just copies and pastes stuff she's already written for past novels and tries to resell them as brand new.

A Prisoner of Birth, by Jeffrey Archer

If Danny Cartwright had proposed to Beth Wilson on any other day, he would not have been arrested and charged with the murder of his best friend. But when the prosecution witnesses happen to be a group of four upper-crust college friends―a barrister, a popular actor, an aristocrat, and the youngest partner in an established firm's history―who is going to believe Danny's side of the story?

Danny is sentenced to twenty-two years and sent to Belmarsh prison, the highest-security jail in the land, from where no inmate has ever escaped. But Spencer Craig, Lawrence Davenport, Gerald Payne, and Toby Mortimer all underestimate Danny's determination to seek revenge―and the extent to which his fiancée Beth will go in pursuit of justice.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Archer (Kane and Abel) pays homage to Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo in this delicious updating of the adventure classic. Four upper-crust friends from Cambridge University known as the Musketeers conspire to frame Danny Cartwright, an illiterate London East Ender, for the murder of Danny's oldest friend and brother-in-law to be, Bernie Wilson. The outcome of the intriguing trial, which pits a relatively novice defense lawyer against a skilled prosecutor, is a 22-year sentence for Danny. In maximum-security Belmarsh prison, Danny is lucky enough to share a cell with Sir Nicholas Moncrieff, the book's Abbé Faria figure, who teaches him to read and write. In a trick familiar to those who know their Dumas, Danny escapes by impersonating Moncrieff and hatches an intricate scheme to punish the Musketeers and clear his name. While Archer doesn't explore the cost to Danny's soul his revenge exacts, the author's firsthand knowledge of prison life and legal maneuvers helps make this a thoroughly enjoyable entertainment. 250,000-copy printing; author tour. From the Inside Flap
International bestseller and master storyteller Jeffrey Archer is at the very top of his game in a story of fate and fortune, redemption and revenge.
If Danny Cartwright had proposed to Beth Wilson the day before, or the day after, he would not have been arrested and charged with the murder of his best friend. But when the four prosecution witnesses are a barrister, a popular actor, an aristocrat, and the youngest partner in an established firm's history, who is going to believe your side of the story?
Danny is sentenced to twenty-two years and sent to Belmarsh prison, the highest-security jail in the land, from where no inmate has ever escaped.
However, Spencer Craig, Lawrence Davenport, Gerald Payne, and Toby Mortimer all underestimate Danny's determination to seek revenge, and Beth's relentless quest to pursue justice, which ends up with all four fighting for their lives,
Thus begins Jeffrey Archer's most powerful novel since "Kane and Abel," with a cast of characters that will remain with you long after you've turned the last page.
And if that is not enough, prepare for an ending that will shock even the most ardent of Archer's fans.

Something Old, Something New
By Tom S.
Wow! I read THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO as a teen, and it's always been a favorite of mine, so I was delighted to learn that Jeffrey Archer's new novel was a modern version of that well-loved tale. But A PRISONER OF BIRTH is a good deal more than a new spin on Alexandre Dumas--it's a fascinating, edge-of-your-seat thriller that actually makes a few valid points about the world today. From courtroom to prison to freedom with a glamorous new identity and a burning desire for revenge, the young hero of Archer's book is a worthy contemporary counterpart of Edmond Dantes, the "Count" of Monte Cristo. But you don't have to be familiar with the Dumas original to enjoy this terrific story. It's a good, old-fashioned page-turner that succeeds on its own merits. Highly recommended.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold."
By E. Bukowsky
Jeffrey Archer's " A Prisoner of Birth" opens on a cheerful note. An East-Ender named Danny Cartwright gets down on one knee and proposes to his pregnant girlfriend, Beth Wilson, who happily accepts. Bernie, Beth's brother and Danny's best mate, joins the happy couple at a pub to celebrate. The revelry ends abruptly when four drunken men pick a fight with Bernie and Danny, who depart with Beth to avoid a row. Unfortunately, the three are confronted by their antagonists and a vicious brawl ensues, leaving Bernie dead and Danny arrested for his murder. Although Danny's conscientious young attorney, Alex Redmayne, does his best to defend his client (who refuses to plead guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter), the four men from the pub, who call themselves the Musketeers, concoct a bogus but credible story and stick with it.

The actual killer is Spencer Craig who, ironically, is a barrister specializing in criminal law. Craig is a sociopath who has convinced his three friends, Gerald Payne, an estate agent, Lawrence Davenport, a television, actor, and Toby Mortimer, a drug addict, whom he has known since their days at Cambridge, to lie on his behalf. The wealthy and privileged Craig has contempt for the uneducated Cartwright and is elated when the jury finds Danny guilty. The sentence: twenty-two years in Belmarsh high-security prison.

"A Prisoner of Birth" is reminiscent of Dumas' classic "The Count of Monte Cristo," with Danny playing the role of Edmond Dantes, who was also the victim of a gross miscarriage of justice. While in prison, Danny undergoes a major transformation. His cellmate, Nick Moncrieff, is an sophisticated and cultured individual; under his tutelage, Danny loses his accent and begins to speak and behave like a gentleman. He also takes courses and proves to be an intelligent and gifted pupil, especially in mathematics and business. Although his future seems bleak, a series of unforeseen events provide Danny with the opportunity to clear his name while taking revenge on the people who wronged him.

Archer has written an engrossing tale that is blessedly free of the sensationalism, gore, and explicit language that is common in today's fiction. Archer's style brings to mind the novels of yesteryear, with a beginning, middle, and end, and no distracting flashbacks. On the downside, Archer offers no shading in his characterizations; the villains are contemptible and the heroes are loyal and steadfast. Since most people are somewhat familiar with the Dumas story, there are few surprises in store. Still, once the reader becomes invested in Danny's fate, he will be interested to see how the young man's problems are eventually resolved. There is something here for everyone: scenes of intense courtroom drama, a touching romance, high-stakes financial intrigue, and a few delectable twists and turns in the final chapters. Although "A Prisoner of Birth" is not subtle, edgy, realistic, or brilliantly written, it is a good old-fashioned yarn, and that alone will earn it an eager audience.

Evokes thought and emotions
By KForHerbs
I think Archer is a superior author, and this story is one of his better books. I'm pretty good at figuring out twists in a plot, and how the story will end, but this book kept me guessing! It definitely will surprise! The story is moving, and one becomes immersed in the characters. There were several instances I had such strong emotional reactions that I found myself saying out loud, "no, how could you do that?" or " how terrible!" and other reactions. There are some good lessons in this book about speculating and holding grudges against people.

Tonight I Said Goodbye (Lincoln Perry), by Michael Koryta

A remarkable debut mystery from the award-winning author of the 2003 St. Martin's Press/Private Eye Writers of America Prize for Best First Private Eye Novel.

Michael Koryta's Tonight I Said Goodbye marks the emergence of a stunning new voice in crime fiction. With its edge-of-your-seat pacing, finely drawn characters, and rock-solid prose, Tonight I Said Goodbye would seem to be the work of a grizzled pro; the fact that the author is just twenty-one years old makes it all the more amazing.

Investigator Wayne Weston is found dead of an apparent suicide in his home in an upscale Cleveland suburb, and his wife and six-year-old daughter are missing. Weston's father insists that private investigators Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard take the case to exonerate his son and find his granddaughter and daughter-in-law. As they begin to work they discover there is much more to the situation than has been described in the prevalent media reports. There are rumors of gambling debts and extortion, and a group of Russians with ties to organized crime who don't appreciate being investigated--a point they make clear with baseball bats.

With some assistance from newspaper reporter Amy Ambrose, Perry and Pritchard believe they are making swift progress. But then they are warned off the investigation by a millionaire real estate tycoon and the FBI. Just when they feel they are closing in on a possible source of answers, another murder forces them to change direction in the case.

Perry travels to a resort town in South Carolina and there he finds more than one game being played, and all of them are deadly. The stakes quickly become very personal for Perry, and it's clear that there will be no walking away from this case.

In a debut that has already garnered praise from some of today's top writers, Michael Koryta immediately establishes himself as a standard bearer for the next generation of crime writers.

Tonight I Said Goodbye is a 2005 Edgar Award Nominee for Best First Novel.

From Publishers Weekly
A pair of PIs investigate the murder of one of their own in Koryta's sharp, fast-paced debut. Crusty old John Weston hires partners Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard to investigate both the death of his son, Wayne, in an incident the cops have ruled a suicide, and the disappearance of Wayne's wife and young daughter. Perry and Pritchard soon determine that Wayne was working for Jeremiah Hubbard, "Cleveland's answer to Donald Trump," in a series of surveillance jobs that brought him into contact with Russian mobsters. The case heats up considerably when the detectives locate Randy Hartwick, a Marine who served with Wayne in a special ops unit, only to have him shot right before their eyes. The cat-and-mouse game shifts to South Carolina, as Perry noses around a Myrtle Beach resort where Hartwick had worked security, only to stumble into Wayne's daughter and wife, who are staying at the same hotel. Julie Weston reveals that she has a videotape her husband made of the mobsters committing a murder, and soon they're both in danger when the Russians come looking for the tape. Although he occasionally tries to substitute jaded PI patter for genuine character development, 21-year-old Koryta delivers well-crafted scenes and genuinely surprising plot twists. This riveting detective novel should delight fans looking for new talent.

Lincoln Perry is Great Character
By Rick Mitchell
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed "A Welcome Grave" I came back to this, the beginning of the Lincoln Perry series, and was in no way disappointed.

Lincoln and his taciturn partner, Joe Pritchard, are hired, against their better judgment, by an elderly former military man. His son has committed suicide and his daughter-in-law and granddaughter have gone missing. He is convinced that his son was murdered and hires Perry to learn who did it and to find the mother and daughter.

Without giving away the plot, it is difficult to say much more than the father is right. Thus begins a terrific mystery involving the Russian mafia and white collar intrigue. Nothing that comes about is expected. The pace is fast and the book is a real page turner.

Best of all, Perry and Pritchard are solid characters with depth, especially Perry, who is the star. He has a real personality and a decent sense of wry humor.

This is a highly recommended PI mystery. Knowing how good the fourth book was in the series, I'll be going to two and three very soon.

A little gem of a book
By Beverly Sperry
What a lovely little gem of a book! The title is almost misleading, because it by no means confines itself to a discussion of Glutathione. Rather, it's a comprehensive review of many different healthcare issues, complete with excellent nutritional and supplement recommendations. Medical conditions and biological information are explained in very clear language, and the book is blessedly free of exclamation points, those banes of the diet and health book industry.
I would recommend this book as an excellent all-around reference on the subject of nutritional healing.

Antioxidants heal and rejuvinate.
By A Customer
Just as the previous reviews claim, this book is great. As Pressman does so well in all of his books, the information is explained clearly - for all readerships. Antioxidants in general and Glutathione in particular are our bodies' buffers to the deteriorating effects of "life". Taken as blends or individually, our bodies need them. iHerb is a site where I have found Glutathione as well as other antioxidants. My doctor recommended I add them to my daily regeime. You can find additional documentation to support Pressman's book at iHerb as well as your choice of products.

A concise report on the effects of amino acids
By A Customer
Just happened to find this title in the library. Since reading it, both my wife and I have started taking NAC-Glutathione with excellent results.
A very good explanation of why your body needs vitamins and amino acids to combat free radicals.
A life altering revelation.

Honor Among Thieves, by Jeffrey Archer

Spring 1994, Washington, D.C. - While the Clinton Administration grapples with its domestic policies, a sinister plot is being masterminded six thousand miles away in Baghdad. By using $100 million as bait and spinning a deadly web of corruption, forgery, and terror, Saddam Hussein seeks to embarrass the U.S. with the ultimate revenge: to steal a treasured historical document and then destroy it before the world's media-on July 4, 1994.

As the countdown to Independence Day begins, two agents stand in the way of his nearly flawless plan: Scott Bradley, a rising star in the CIA who is desperate to prove his patriotism, and Hannah Kopec, the stunning Mossad operative who has already lost o much that she fears nothing and trusts no one. Their unrelenting quest to prevent what would undoubtedly be the most humiliating day in U.S. history takes them across four continents and climaxes in a dramatic, triple-twist ending.

Ingeniously plotted and as up-to-the-minute as today's headlines, Honor Among Thieves resonates with the brilliant pace that is the trademark of master storyteller Jeffrey Archer.

From Publishers Weekly
Newly minted CIA and Mossad agents work to undo damage wrought by a Mafia/Iraqi conspiracy in English author Archer's ( As the Crow Flies ; Kane and Abel ) witty, action-filled--if improbable--thriller. Some readers, we suppose, might find quite plausible the idea that the mob has arranged for a ringer to impersonate President Clinton during his first months in office. But here the actor who plays Clinton assumes the role only long enough to swipe the Declaration of Independence. The chase is on as mobsters spirit the manuscript-turned-macguffin off to Iraq, where Saddam has plans to barbeque it for the Fourth of July, live on CNN. Meanwhile, Yale Law professor Scott Bradley goes undercover for the CIA, tracking lovely young Mossad operative Hannah Kopec, likewise on assignment in Paris. It's only a matter of time before the two agents are caught up in each other's arms and, of course, in the race to recapture the Declaration. Beyond the thrills and surprises that Archer's masterful narrative provides, readers will remain aware of the extreme unlikelihood that a scam such as Saddam's could succeed, and that two such neophytes would be thrown in to stop it. This deficit in verisimilitude doesn't detract too much from the novel's entertainment value, however, and some will be amused that Archer himself good-naturedly joins in the criticism by ironically making the accuracy of the spelling of "Brittish" (sic) in the Declaration and its copies central to his plot. 50,000 first printing; major ad/promo; author tour.

From School Library Journal
YA-It is spring, 1993. Saddam Hussein, in his ongoing desire to humiliate the U.S., arranges for the theft of the Declaration of Independence from the National Archives. His aim is to destroy the document in front of CNN cameras on July 4th for all the world to see, and so destroy the credibility of his arch-enemy. This is the basis of Archer's fast-paced novel. His cast of characters is right out of today's headlines: President Bill Clinton and Saddam Hussein; American CIA agents and agents from Israel's Mossad; the Mafia; and an Irish expert forger. The setting of the novel is equally broad, practically encompassing the globe. The highly improbable plot may strain credibility, but the author more than makes up for this by creating an entertaining adventure.
Pamela B. Rearden, Centreville Regional Library, Fairfax County, VA

From Kirkus Reviews
It's Amateur Night on the international intrigue stage, as perennial bestseller Archer (As the Crow Flies, etc.) shows Saddam Hussein's henchmen grooming an actor to take the place of the President so that they can--push the button that starts WW III? Plant a bomb that will destroy both chambers of Congress? No, steal the Declaration of Independence! Actually, the actor, one Lloyd Adams, is much less important than his support staff: Tony Cavalli, the unscrupulous, well-connected lawyer whose off-the-books ``Skills'' department takes on the assignment of switching the Declaration for a copy that will remain in the Archives until Saddam publicly burns the original on July 4, bringing Bill Clinton to his knees; T. Hamilton McKenzie, the Nobelist in plastic surgery (!) whose daughter is kidnapped to encourage him to rearrange Adams's face; William O'Reilly (``Dollar Bill''), nonpareil forger who copies the Declaration exactly and throws in a few near- copies for good measure; Johnny Sciasatore, distinguished director whose fake movie motorcade of the President helps get the imposter into the Archives; and a contract killer in Laura Ashley dresses who goes around mopping up the rest of the staff. The Skills crew gets the goods, of course, and then the ``Mission: Impossible'' scenario is reversed, as Scott Bradley, a Yale Law prof and CIA hanger-on, joins rookie Mossad agent Hannah Kopec (who already thinks she's killed Scott when his earlier cover as Mossad contact ``Simon Rosenthal'' was blown: don't ask) and a giant, custom-made safe named Madame Bertha to sneak the Declaration back out of Baghdad. With all those copies and all those agents plotting at cross-purposes, you just know there are going to be multiple switches and surprises, but instead of generating suspense, they just add to the general air of genial preposterousness. Undeniably entertaining, if you can get into the spirit of farcical and inconsequential melodrama. Maps of the Washington motorcade route and the Mideast--just in case you have any questions. What an uncanny plot. Who thinks of these things? When I finished the book I asked myself if this is possible? Archer's attention to detail is both suspenseful and educational and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Great songwriting and great singing add up to a great album.
By Dan Lesnick
Ediwn McCain's songwriting really shines on this album. The tracks "Sorry to a Friend" and "Solitude" are both destined to be classics among Ediwn McCain fans. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, he has only had a few radio hits; "I'll Be" being his most popular, and another great example of beautiful lyrics and songwriting, although on a different album.

The tracks range from bluesy folk to light rock. The lyrics are often sublime, and always intelligent. McCain's voice is like a glass of fine whiskey; edgy and smooth at the same time.

Excellent album for those looking for something accessible, yet mature and engaging.

A Southern Rock Classic
By Michael A. Crowe
I recently repurchased this CD after losing my original several years ago. Though the production value isn't what I really remember, the music itself has easily stood the test of time. By far, this remains Edwin McCain's best CD, even though his bigger hits came later.

The jazz influence stands out here more than on later recordings, and it's really too bad he didn't keep that element. There's also a playful element that fits perfectly with the attitude he shows on stage.

If you're an Edwin fan that hasn't listened to this disc yet, it's an absolute must-have.

About the Author

Christine Warren is the bestselling author of The Others series, including Wolf at the Door, Big Bad Wolf, Born to Be Wild, and Black Magic Woman. Born and raised in coastal New England, she now lives as a transplant in the Pacific Northwest. (She completely bypassed those states in the middle due to her phobia of being landlocked.) When not writing, she enjoys horseback riding, playing with her pets, identifying dogs from photos of their underbellies, and most of all reading things someone else had to agonize over.

Short Story for Full Length Price
By Amazon Customer
When I first started reading the Others series by Christine Warren I was really excited. I liked the concept of the books, I liked the overall story line, and I liked the characters. Then the rewrites/rereleases started.

Several books ago Christine Warren began rewriting books that had previously been released as short stories and releasing them. I was ok with it at first, but now, you've got to be joking. I purchased this book in kindle format thinking that I would be getting a book. What I got was a short story with a TON of filler. 17% of this book was not part of the story, and it is a small file to begin with. This easily should have been released in an anthology, or perhaps with another Others book. It was short, lacked any sort of interesting plot, and had such little character development I was stunned. I didn't care about these characters, the book didn't add to the backstory in any meaningful way, and the whole thing felt like a throwaway. I feel like I was ripped off. I don't have any problem paying for a book, but I want a book, not a short story.

I seriously hope Ms. Warren begins writing new, original books and leaves the previously released rewrites behind. Unless the storyline starts progressing again I won't continue buying.

cheated again by a reprint
By DMS
I am getting really angry with publishers who keep re-issuing books and not telling the readers that this is NOT the first time this story has been published. I originally purchased this story on the Elloras Cave site several years ago where I really, really, enjoyed the story in it's romantica format. The story of the five friends who start trying to fix their friends up on dates is a really great read. But now the publisher has re-released these stories in print for the masses and the story looses some of it's original charm and impact. Not to mention you will be reading the stories OUT OF ORDER. If you enjoyed Christine Warren's "Fur Fixed" stories from EC beware before you buy this book or the re-issue of the other stories. These stories are kind of dull compared to their original charm. Also; you are spending money that you already spent. I wouldn't recommend buying this book. Try to find the ebook; it was much better.

Is Christine Warren Still Out There?
By Traci King
I am joining those angry with this rehashed book which I had already read in another of Warren's series. How dare she try to fool her devoted readers. Not only was this a rehashed book, it isn't even a book, just a short story with filler from all her other books in the Others series. If I had looked at the back of the book when I purchased it, I would have put it right back on the shelf. I am not going to review this story, since it's been reviewed in many of its contexts, but suffice it to say it was a ho hum story with ho hum characters, who had a ho hum relationship if you want to call it that. I am very reluctant to purchase any more of Ms Warren's books and inclined to toss the ones I already have to the half price book store. Let someone else read this rehased story but pay alot less for the privilege.
