Chapter One
GONE HUNTING

Deer hunting is a Michigan phenomenon. A seasonal rite of passage for fathers and sons, mothers and daughters. An economic bonanza for business owners who both welcome the hunters’ money and despise them for clogging the roads, filling the woods, making it impossible to go out and enjoy a meal or a drink for the last two weeks each November.

Some 800,000 hunters pour into the woods. Caravans of cars from the Midwest fill the interstates. They jam the freeway rest stops. Some own hunting cabins. Some camp in motor homes. Others fill the motels along the state and county roads. Many pitch tents and set up camp where their dads and grandfathers have been pitching tents and setting up camps for decades.

They fill the restaurants and the bars. It’s even an economic boon for the farmers, who get to take some measure of revenge for all the corn and grain stolen from them by the marauding deer of summer and fall. Misshapen carrots that can’t be sold in supermarkets are wrapped in big plastic bags and sold as deer bait, to be left in clearings or near blinds in hopes of drawing a whitetail close enough for a killing shot. Huge bags of bait are wedged in between pumps at every gas station, or stacked up out front on the grass next to the driveway. Inside the gas stations, many extra cases of beer are laid in for the siege, too, stacked high and narrowing the aisles.

Whitetails love man. They thrive on the edges of his civilization. They sneak into his fields to eat his corn if he’s a farmer; if he’s a suburbanite, they nibble buds of the lower branches of trees in the spring, trim his lawn in the summer and snag low-hanging or fallen fruit in the fall. In the northern Michigan woods, their population exploded at the end of the 19th century, when the hordes of lumbermen clear-cut tens of thousands of acres of giant white pine, which for a generation supplied the needs of homebuilders across the U.S.

As the pines fell to the ax and were hauled off, aspen saplings by the millions with their tender, juicy leaves, and seemingly endless acres of raspberry and blackberry thickets replaced them, an endless, nutrient-rich cornucopia. As the deer population grew, the new forest that grew with them was shaped by their appetite. Voracious feeders of low vegetation, the deer kept things trimmed on the ground as the new trees grew to form a canopy.

Other species couldn’t compete and left or died. By the mid–20th century, the deer were the dominant animal. Where once a sighting of a whitetail was an adrenaline-jolting highlight of the day, something you told folks about later, they became as ubiquitous as squirrels. They spread throughout the state, finding the edges of suburbia to their taste, too.

Eventually there were so many whitetails that the hunters and the bureaucrats who ran the state’s Department of Natural Resources stopped talking about them as if they were animals and began to refer to them as if they were rows of corn or soybeans. The kill during hunting season came to be called “the deer harvest.”

There were millions of the things. Nearly a million hunters sitting in blinds or stalking through the woods hoping to kill one. In any given year, 300,000 would be successful. Just the rope needed to tie that many big animals to the roof of a car or an SUV was a cottage industry. Add in archery season, and the kill was 500,000 deer.

A bountiful harvest, indeed.

Masterful job of telling the true story accurately

As the Prosecutor in this case I wondered if anyone could really capture the essence of this horrific story. There were just so many different aspects to the case, the mystery surrounding Brian and David's disappearance, the years of wondering what had really happened to the point where the case became a Michigan legend, the dogged investigators who never gave up chasing down thousands of tips over eighteen years, the eventual electrifying discovery of an eye witness who had lived in fear for nearly two decades and the gut wretching trial which revealed the horrific truth about the murders of Brian Ogjan and David Tyll. It's all in the book. Tom Henderson did a masterful job of telling the real story and letting the reader get a true life feel for what really transpired in this horrendous murder case. I was astonished at how he caught the true essence of the case. A mezmerizing read that I couldn't put down. Fabulous job Tom! You got it right.

I almost didn't write this review

I almost didn't write this review because about 2 weeks ago I wrote a sincere review for a book called iWOZ. This book was so childishly written it was almost a waste of time but because it was written by a famous person all the reviews said how wonderful this person was and overlooked this, at best, average book.

I told myself I would never bother writing another review in Amazon because the reviews are mostly popularity contests rather then reviews of "the book".

This book arrived the other day and I could not put it down. The author Tom Henderson becomes, in my opinion, one of the 3 best true crime writers in the country(and I've read most of them).

I buy true crime books for the mystery aspect. The best written TC books take the reader along in the solving of the mystery or crime. I don't even read fiction mysteries because once your read a book like this one...fiction can't equal-up.

The author does not, like so many cookie cutter TC authors, tell you everything about the murder-crime in the first chapter and let the book and reader go down hill from there. The last 3 true crime books I read did exactly that and I tossed them in the garbage.

This author takes you on the roller coaster ride of two 18 year old murders and you experience the emotions of the various detectives, suspects, and surviving relatives as they try to find the answers to these horrible crimes.

This unsolved mystery keeps the reader turning page after page.

I actually have not finished but I am on page 255 but I am so pleasantly pleased that this author is giving me more than my money's worth I feel I should let other TC readers know this.

Good and Evil

I read this book cover to cover without putting it down for more than a few minutes at a time. Henderson is an excellent writer. He captured personalities and feelings as well as an excellent example of "Good vs. Evil" with good winning in the long run. Unfortunately, evil triumphed for 18 years leaving a wake of terror, heartbreak and abuse. I grew up in Hale, MI where my family still resides and where the Duvall brothers were finally arrested. I was friends with Bob Lesneski in my teens and am proud to say most people from that area are a lot like "Bronco" - honest, dependable, caring and hard working. In 60's and 70's, this rural area was a true community, where no-one locked their doors, everyone knew and trusted everyone else, ironically making it a prime target for the permeation of evil. To be reminded that this horrific crime happened in my back yard, my safe haven, was very scary. I knew most of the people in the book and had been to most of the places mentioned. To my surprise, I even knew Lesneski's boss, Dan Miller. He was a friend of mine when I attended college at Northern Michigan University and I never knew that he was associated with Lesneski and the solving of this crime. It's a small world after all. Reading this book should put everyone on alert. Not only is it a true story and a good read, it leaves you with a lasting impression of good and evil which could very well be in your back yard.

Reads more like a travelogue than a true crime story . . .

Take out the wordy and irrelevant descriptions of various locales frequented by serial killer Glen Rogers and this 269-page book would never crack the 150-page barrier. Why, for instance, Linedecker found it necessary to go into such detail about the geography and history (as in all the way back to the 18th century) of such towns as Hamilton, Kentucky . . . well, if you can figure it out, please let me know. Local color is one thing, but this is local humdrum. To make matters worse, the author spends far too few pages writing about the real meat of any true crime story . . . the actual crimes, the crime scenes, the forensic evidence, the investigations, the investigators and (saddest cut of all) the victims. The photo section of the book is particularly maddening. It features eight pictures of the killer and only two pictures of the poor women who had the misfortune to cross his path. And I'm not talking about exploitive and sensationalist crime scene photos of dead bodies. I'm talking about how these women looked in life. Just as with the so many stories of murder and tragedy in our society, the killer gets most of the press and the victims get the short end of the stick. Oh, and one more thing . . . when you crack this book, be ready to read at least fifty descriptions of how Glen Rogers drinks, what he drinks and what happens when he drinks. Better yet, read the first one and skip the other forty-nine. Basically, Smooth Operator is a series of newspaper atricles that Linedecker put on the rack and stretched into a book. If you want a good read, leave this one sitting on the shelf collecting the dust it deserves and spend your money on ANYTHING by Ann Rule, Robert Ressler or John Douglas.

Really Lost Me

I don't usually feel so strongly about a book that I take the time to write a review, but I do feel that other potential readers must be warned!
I can tell you that I made it all the way to Page 150 before I abandoned the mission of trying to finish this book.
The author was really beating a dead horse (yes, the pun was intended) with his use of cliche's and in his descriptions of Rogers and his victims. For example, how many times do I have to be informed of how much Rogers drank, what he drank and what his reaction was to all of which he drank? The author also goes off on little rants that really aren't relavant to what is really going on (like going into an in-depth history of "Carnies") and his over-use of adjectives really got on my nerves. At one time, a description of the victim and a crime scene was given and all I could think was "Was this actually written in the reports?".
Who edited this book, anyway? And exactly who was the intended audience? This story could have really been interesting, but the entire thing read like a badly written magazine article.

well this book was good until about 3 quarters of the way through then it just got tedious and i actually skipped pages!! i read these types of books all the time and theres a few things i must say. first what happened to the rest of the girls that were killed?? i mean they talked about 1 conviction so how am i to know what happened to the other cases because really i cant say oh yes this guy did it if the author didnt even tell us what happened to the other victims(as far as court)! now i have to go search the net now to see if im missing something! thats something the author forgot to tell us. 2nd why was so many pages spent on extradition? who cares?!?!?!? it couldve been done in 2 pages and then there was some tiny blurb at the end about what happened at trial, almost like the author ran out of time and paper!! i didnt get that because although i dislike too much rambling done in books about trials i do like more that a he is guilty he got death! there shouldve been at least 40 pages spent on that. other than the end i thought the book was pretty good but i now that i feel i got jipped at the end i dont recomend this book or the author as i feel the writing was very mediocre.

Beautifully Written But Emotionally Flat Story

...P>Tess Boone, a disillusioned celebrity journalist, returns back to her hometown in the Ozarks to interview her first love Buck Campbell, now a famous (but also disillusioned) country western singer.
Tess left Buck to pursue her dreams and please her father who wanted bigger things for his baby girl. In the process she stomped all over Buck's heart. Heartbroken he turned to booze and women. Headed straight for Hell, he was saved by Georgina, an older woman who saw his potential and made him a singing sensation. She molds him into the man the public sees and he marries her even though he'll never love her.
When Tess and Buck meet up again (years later) the sparks fly and they realize what empty lives they've been living. In a few short days their love is reborn. Only now there are two big obstacles in their way: Georgina (for starters) and Buck's good-guy persona. Will they sacrifice their careers or their hearts? Will I care when they do? (The answer to that one would be NO)
Ms. Garrett has a beautiful way of describing the Ozarks and her vivid imagery breathes life into this familiar story of lost love. Despite her lyrical writing I thought the heroine was self-centered and very difficult to sympathize with. The hero never came alive for me because we mainly see him through the heroine's eyes and learn his feelings via his song lyrics. This did not work for me. I would've enjoyed a hundred or so more pages of the hero's viewpoint. And (finally, you say?) I thought the ending was way too vague and pat.

A romantic novel by Annie Garrett tells the story of two high school sweethearts separated by time and how their love brings them back together years later.
Tess and Jamie were the typical high school lovers, inseperable by any means. Jamie thought the world of Tess and vowed they would be together forever. Tess's father, on the other hand, had great dreams of a college education and success for his only child. Against Tess's will, her father sends her off to college and forces her to leave Jamie behind. Broken hearted, Jamie runs away from his foster family and is never heard from again.
Ten years later, Tess is a successful celebrity journalist sent back to her native Ozarks to interview the biggest sensation in country music: Buck Campbell, Jamie's stage name. How can Tess face the only man she has ever loved? Would he ever forgive her?
Overall "Angel..." is a delight to read. The Ozark setting will strike a familiar bell to those who have visited the Branson area. Also, the size of the novel, only 181 pages, will satisfy those with not a lot of time to read a big novel.

Beautifully story of true love...I couldn't put it down!!!

I have started reading a number of romance novels in the past several months but none has held my attention the way "Angel" did...I couldn't put it down. In fact, before all was said and done I was so spellbound by the story of Tess and Buck that I read the book three times. This is a very real story of true love, torn apart by the desires of a third party. Tess did what her father wanted her to do, and sacrificed the love of her life in the process. I've seen this book compared to The Bridges of Madison County, but I think this book is miles apart!!

The Best Anthology I Have Read

This is a terrific book. All the authors have excelled themselves. The luscious love stories all have heroes and heroines breathing with life and acting realistically in coming to grips with their emotional problems and misunderstandings. The love scenes are hot and tillilating but never irksome as there is no gratuitous sex. I must say I have got much more than my money's worth.

Superb...Some of the best of the genre

After discovering the "spicy romance" genre a couple of years ago, my impression is that the short story or novella length is best for this type of tale. The 80 pages or so per story is enough to set the scene, develop the characters, crank up the intensity, and come to very satisfactory conclusion.
Susan Johnson's "Playing with Fire" and Stephanie Laurens' "Melting Ice" are set amongst the English nobility that romance authors seem to find especially fertile material. The authors know this arena so well they swiftly transport you the period. Although the outcomes were evident 10 pages into each story, I enjoyed every minute of the journey. The book's other two stories are present-day, and their very different characters and conflicts provide contrast and balance to the collection.
The stories in the collection are on a par with the ones in the "Secrets: The Best in Women's Sensual Fiction" (Volumes 1-4). Highly recommended.

Rough vs Tough

Anthologies are short stories-which means you will not have to deal with a monstrous amount of subplots. (Yeah!!!!) Sometimes after reading amass of novels, anthologies give you a much-needed break. The short stories do not allow the 300+ pages authors use for interference from outsiders and forces them to stick to the main characters/plot.
Playing With Fire by Susan Johnson *****
Historical Romance: The penniless Duke of Ware has been brought and paid for by banker, John Overton who wanted a dukedom for his daughter, Olivia. Olivia is so excited that she does not even say "I do" when prompted by the priest and Ware is so enthused that he got drunk the night before his wedding and had to be dragged out of bed by his solicitor-after his the countess (his mistress) was dragged out. Unwillingly they must both stick with Overton's contract and each other until an heir is produced. I am partial to Susan Johnson and feel this is another great love story. Olivia is a strong woman and stands her ground with this notorious rake. Though he may be rough, she is tough enough to straighten out this Duke's edges.
Simple Sins by Eileen Wilks ****
Romance: Bad boy meets Good girl. Felicity is a school teacher in the good ole town of Cross Creek. Damon Reed left Cross Creek for the fast life and has only returned in order to get some closure after the death of his grandmother, Gertrude. Felicity is seeking closure too, her mother has a problem and she's trying to get into Gertrude's house to find it. Damon immediately recognizes her and since the road is flooded, they are forced to live under the same roof and play seek & find. Felicity knows there is no way someone like Damon could be interested in her but he has other ideas. First time I have ever heard of this author but that did not stop me from enjoying this great story.

Contemporary Romance: Marisa Thornton used to be in love with Deke Laslo until he for some unknown reason ended their relationship. She is trying to prove to her father that she has moved on, actually has a new beau, and decides to catch a ride with Deke to Rhode Island for her fathers' (also Deke's ex-boss) birthday party. Deke is a loner who recently quit his job as a mercenary and knows Marisa deserves someone more normal, stable, loveable, etc. Will he wisely use his second chance to have the love of his life? First time for this author also, hot, bumpy love story.
Melting Ice by Stephanie Laurens *****
Historical Romance: Dyan St. Laurent aka the lion has been forced to reluctantly return home to become the fourth Duke of Darke and continue the family line, immediately! He left this life behind him 15 years ago and is now happily living an uncomplicated, rich life in India. He bumps into Lady Iceberg aka Lady Fiona Winton-Ryder as she crashes an orgy held by their mutual childhood friends. Prime and Proper Fiona is a HANDful but Dyan is just the man to handle her. The distance did not diminish their mutual attraction. Hilarious at times, hot romance.

FAILED SEANCE

Alas, Bishop climbed aboard the PKD Express without a destination in mind. His attempt to contact the ghost of PKD only produced some raps on the ceiling. Using bumper sticker brevity, there was too much of this and not enough of that. Alas, too many of his characters had nothing to do but fester in their boring world. Dick, himself, usually gave his quirky characters an alternate world to escape into. This story's tacked on Brave New World ending, the "redemptive shift," a gift from super aliens, didn't quiet work.

Admittedly, it is difficult to develop character for a ghost. But giving him a craving for strong coffee doesn't quite do it. And it was hard for the other characters to react to the command, "Don't touch me." There were some interesting characters drawn. Cal Pickford, who idolized PKD much as the author Bishop must have, was very well developed. But most of the others were but wheels to keep the story moving, that alas, kept falling off. Still, not a bad read when you're snowed in for the winter.

Being dead is just the start when there's no time

The original title of this book was "The Secret Ascension" and I'm not really sure which one works better, in all honesty. The current title is probably a little more evocative but a little misleading as well, since the book isn't really about Philip K Dick, not in the strict sense. Sure, he's in it and the book works in a few of his recurring themes, but in the end it comes perilously close to Bishop attempting to emulate a style that he doesn't have the mindset for. The setup for the book is great, taking place in a then-contemporary early eighties America where Richard Nixon is entering his fourth term and has turned the country into a near-fascist police state. We've won Vietnam and are currently engaged in "reorienting" the natives into our wonderful American way of life. Meanwhile dissent is actively crushed and matters are way closer to what everyone imagines Communist Russia was like. And in the midst of this, a faded writer named Philip Dick decides to have a stroke and die. Thus our story begins. Even though his name appears in the title, the author rarely appears in the book itself, after a bit in the beginning where he starts to interact with the characters, he sort of vanishes, maintaining a presence, although not an active one. The story focuses more on Cal Pickford, a Colorado native transplanted into Georgia with his wife. A big fan of PKD, he's trying to make a living in the new oppressive America, and finds himself actively engaged in trying to change it, almost against his will. Bishop's vision of a repressed America is actually quite well done and does feel real, which is something that Philip Dick was good at, circa "Man in the High Castle", for all the splits from known history, it does feel like ordinary people going about their lives. Cal and his wife come across as real characters, although the rest don't quite succeed as much, since they seem to exist more to push the plot along to wherever it needs to go. It seems at points that Bishop is trying to play with Dick's themes of different reality and rewriting our way into a better one. The thing is that Dick was able to convey the sheer weirdness of this in near psychedelic fashion, while letting the story remain somehow grounded. Bishop isn't quite up to that task and so the weirdness starts to feel way out of place, especially as the story reaches its climax and things start to make less sense. Dick was never big on explaining in his novels, preferring to let you make your own judgements, while here enough is laid out for us that we can get the scope of it, and it just doesn't resonate. Still, when he focuses on the ins and outs of this new wrong America, the book works pretty well, showing what happens when you let one person get too much power. More a homage than a recreation, Bishop does a credible job but at the same time only reinforces that the only person who could do Philip K Dick was, well, Philip K Dick. And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Good but still somehow lacking

This book is defenately worth reading but I do feel the need to write a slightly more critical review. Having read a lot of Dick's work this by comparison is disturbingly sane. I understand Michael Bishop was not trying to emulate, Dick, but, in that case, I would have liked to have seen something a little more original, something that explored and pushed the boundries of the way we see the world. Dick had a way of writing things that would toy with the reader and provoke them, of building up to something with logical and intelligent insite and then going right off the deep end. I miss that.

A disappointing Coonts' outing

I'm usually a Coonts' fan, but this book was a disappointment. First of all I think the title is overblown as a reflection of the story. Some of the plot line is a bit far-fetched. But most of all I found the book plodding - tedious. Most of the time when I start one of his books, I can't put it down until I finish it. This book lasted for over 2 weeks. Lots of short chapters (some less than a half page in length) that jump back and forth from one locale or character to another. No real intense tension. And all of it tracing back to an improbable chain of events more than 40 years ago that we are to believe would lead a Police Chief to unhesitatingly kill a Secret Service agent and try to assassinate a Presidential candidate, decades later. Hmmmmm. Apparently they haven't heard of the Statutes of Limitation. If you are looking for a good read, I don't agree with those who wrote in these reviews that this was a 4 or 5 star outing. A weak Coonts' contribution. One man's opinion....

Action Packed Book!

A Secret Service agent is dead of an apparent suicide. A Presidential
candidate Senator Gideon McSweeney narrowly misses being assassinated at
a public event. Due to threatening e-mails NSA Desk Three(Deep Black) is
able to find a link to the Republic of Vietnam. It is at first suspected
that "Infinite Burn" a plan for Vietnam to assassinate American leaders
has been launched. Charlie Dean and Tommy Karr travel to Vietnam to do
an investigation. Dean travels to Quang Nam to confront Phuc Dinh who
Dean thought he had sucessfully assassinated 30 years before. Another
person of suspicion is Pine Plains police chief Christopher Ball. It makes
for an interesting read for Deep Black to try and unravel this mystery.
There are many shocking twists and turns for the true villains to be
exposed. The 30 year old conspiracy is just as shocking. This is one of
the better "Deep Black" books that has been written. Be sure not to miss this one.

This is a bit unevenly paced. There are times you wonder what is happening or will it ever get together. However the momentum grows and the ending is first rate. I am left wondering who the Vietnam Namese woman really is/was.
The bottom line is that Charlie Dean is a great character, and when he is not around, the storyline just drags. In the end, though, the ending makes you forget the uneven parts.

A great, complete overview of this tragic event

I am reviewing the hardback copy. This is a very, very good read. Whatever you may have read about the battle of the crater, this account is probably the most concise work around. Duane Schultz has entertwined just enough fiction to make it interesting and a great amount of historical facts that give it creditability.

Excellent docu-fiction on the siege of Petersburg, VA

This book is very similar in style to the great series of Civil War docu-fictions written by Jeff and Michael Shaara ("Gods and Generals", "The Killer Angels", "The Last Full Measure"). In "Glory" we pretty much stay behind the Union lines, sensing the low morale of the entrenched troops and the desperate desire to end the war quickly before the Pres. election of 1864.

The book centers around the Forty-Eighth PA volunteers, their brilliant leader (and engineer), Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants, and the mine they dug underneath Confederate lines in an attempt to end the seige. The story is told in a gripping discussion of wartime politics, personality clashes, outstanding engineering and good-old-fashioned back-breaking work. There are MANY different subplots to the whole endeaveor, providing the reader with outstanding insight into what may have transpired during this period of the war. With so many odds (man-made, technical and natural) stacked against them, the Forty-Eighth's achievement is remarkable.

Overall, just a great read for a Civil War enthusiast (a bit too focused on a tiny part of the whole conflict if you're new to studying the war). The reader must keep in mind that while much of the novel is based on documented fact, it is still a fiction; many details (conversations, etc.) were not fully documented and the author "theorizes" how a conversation may have occured. In the end, perhaps only a history purist would not enjoy this detailed look into this extraordinary attempt to end the war in one "blow" (pun intended!).

The "Killer Angels" type novel of the Crater at Petersburg.

From a top-notch historian comes top-notch historical fiction bringing light and life to the story of the Crater at Petersburg like "Killer Angels" did for Gettysburg. The story is told from the viewpoint of the Union Army's 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers, raised in the coal-mining country of Pennsylvania, and commanded by a former mining engineer. Individual players are brought to life, from coal miner-soldiers and young officers to well-known generals Burnside, McClellan and Grant. One seems to get a good feel for the soldier's life in the trenches around Petersburg. Despite knowing the eventual outcome from one's history books, author Duane Schultz builds a high degree of suspense for the reader-- it was hard to put this book down between readings! I also enjoyed the almost unnoticed peripheral benefit of learning a lot about the strategies, logistics, tactics, and military thought of the day. Glory Enough for All is a great historical novel that could almost double as a history text, yet at the same time it's as riveting as a fictional story can be. Highly recommended for the general audience. Definitely a "Must Read" for Civil War enthusiasts.

Having more stories from A.E. van Vogt repackaged and reprinted can only be good news: along with Heinlein and Asimov, this prolific, wild-eyed author deserves much of the credit for pioneering science fiction's golden age back in the '40s and '50s. As a sort of crazy old uncle of modern sci-fi, though, van Vogt doesn't always get his due: his writing wasn't always spectacular, his plot and pacing fell somewhere between harum-scarum and willy-nilly, and his ideas were delivered in relentless salvos, each more outlandish than the last. But an embarrassment or not, the visionary van Vogt is indisputably part of the family, an entertaining and daring author whose influence can be seen in the work of countless other writers.

This 288-page paperback binds together two of van Vogt's better stories, "The Weapon Makers of Isher" and "The Weapons Shops of Isher," published in sequel-prequel order back in 1946 and 1951. These time-hopping, politically convoluted tales follow the struggle between the oppressive (but beautiful) Empress Innelda and the superadvanced libertarian Weapon Shops ("The right to buy weapons is the right to be free," reads the storefront sign). Much of the melodramatic plot revolves around the Shops' immortal, ultragenius founder Robert Hedrock, his conflict with the Empress, and their differing visions for the future of humanity, but don't fret too much over the details: van Vogt keeps your head comfortably a-swim in a steady stream of whiz-bang gadgetry, plot twists, and breakneck action. --Paul Hughes

A. E. Van Vogt was a SFWA Grand Master. He was born in Canada and moved to the U.S. in 1944, by which time he was well-established as one of John W. Campbell's stable of writers for Astounding Science-Fiction. He lived in Los Angeles, California and died in 2000.

"The air was like wine."

Someone once said that a simple definition of science fiction would be: "ordinary people doing extraordinary things in extraordinary situations". The reader is captivated NOT by strange, futuristic technology, space travel, monsters and aliens, but by how the genre's protagonists live and move about in a world where such possibilities are commonplace. This is why Golden Age pulp sci-fi has so far never translated well to the movie screen. A classic like Asimov's original Foundation series does not consist of action/wars/battles/grotesqueries (which is what movie viewers want), but of well-written, cerebral characters who attempt to discuss and make sense of wild events and mind-bending dilemmas happening all around them. So too is this omnibus edition of A.E.van Vogt's two outstanding novels, "The Weapon Shops of Isher" and "The Weapon Makers". Well-respected but never one of the biggest names of 1940s sci-fi, van Vogt wrote voluminously but never exceeded the scope, imagination, and wonder of this all-too-brief series. He has a devoted readership and has elicited much scholarly discussion, but is mostly dismissed as too "far out" by today's self-congratulating distopians. I will not defend everything he ever wrote (he is definitely an acquired taste), but The Empire of Isher is highly, highly recommended to anyone with an interest in Astounding-era sci-fi and is much more accessible and less bizarre than most of his oeuvre.

Your best introduction to this magical world would be to read van Vogt's original 1942 short story, "The Weapon Shop" (it has been anthologized many times, most significantly in Avon Books' 1971 "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume I"). It is one of three stories (from 1941, 1942, and 1949) that were put together with connecting links to form this edition's first book, "The Weapon Shops of Isher". This "fix-up" reads like a mosaic, with 3 storylines weaving together to tell the story of an underground benevolent organization with superior technology that protects and empowers the citizens of a worldwide empire that would otherwise exploit them. Founder/overseer Robert Hedrock must deal with a catalyst (Cayle Clark) who threatens to destroy the financial stability of the Solar System while two innocent bystanders (Chris McAllister and Fara Clark) are caught in the struggle for power between Empress Innelda Isher's corrupt government and the idealistic Weapon Shops. Because the three original stories were all conceived separately, there is a sense of disjointedness in the narrative where major characters and storylines can disappear, then suddenly reappear many chapters later. Nevertheless, the depth and breadth of van Vogt's vision is brilliantly awe-inspiring, and while a quieter book than its sequel, "The Weapon Shops of Isher" is both absorbing yet paradoxical, and fun yet thought-provoking.

The second book, "The Weapon Makers", was conceived as a full-fledged novel in 1943. This raises the questions: is book 1 a prequel to book 2, or is book 2 a sequel to book 1? This writer holds the second possibility, because book 2 answers many of the unusual questions raised in book 1. But then most of book 1 appeared in magazine form in 1949, while book 2 appeared in 1943. Then book 1 was published in novel form in 1951, while book 2 was revised and published in 1952. A paradox, just as van Vogt would have liked it. "The Weapon Makers" features the same world of the Weapon Shops and the Isher Empire with Robert Hedrock, Innelda Isher, and a few minor characters also returning. This is a much wilder ride than the first book. There is much more emphasis on story than on characters, and there is an impossible-to-escape cliff-hanger at the end of seemingly almost every chapter. All-powerful, unbeatable interstellar aliens are also introduced, and of course they never stand a chance. The scenes where Hedrock visits the crooked CEOs of the gigantic firms he secretly owns are both priceless and prophetic, almost ripped from today's business world headlines. Some might consider it a change of premise when the Weapon Shops do not prove to be as altruistic as they are in the first book, but this is a typical van Vogt device where nothing is quite what it seems to be at first. And while I would have loved for the series to have been continued or expanded, "The Weapon Makers" does conclude with a definitive ending.

One final thought. The cover of this omnibus edition depicts a long-barrelled gun, looking very much like real-world firearms or at least a typical movie-style laser blaster. The defensive guns that figure so prominently in the two novels were described by van Vogt as a brass-knuckles type device that fitted easily in the hand, being activated by thought. In the Prologue of "The Weapon Shops of Isher", they are described as: "It was a tiny thing, shaped like a pistol, but with three cubes projecting in a half-circle from the top of the slightly bulbuous firing chamber." Later on, in Chapter 16, we're told of one model: "Notice the flanges on this barrel are little more than bulges." These descriptions of course do not mesh with the cover illustration. It can only be assumed that the publisher did not want to commission a more representative illustration, but do not let that deter you from buying this awesome, visionary sci-fi masterpiece. I've been continuously reading and re-reading these books since the 1980s, and have yet to tire of them.

Confusion about two different books

This is actually a review of _Empire of the Atom_, an SFnal re-telling of Robert Graves's _I Claudius_, and a quite different book, also by Van Vogt.
As to the books at hand, they are some of vV's best, but suffer from all his characteristic faults -- the too frequent plot changes, the endless consipiricies (often where the leaders of two opposed sides are secretly the same person) a society whose economic basis is dubious at best. But it is a page-turner, and one that keeps this reader returning from time to time. A classic that any SF fan should read sometime or other.

Justly reprinted

I have not seen this edition, but both the component novels, "The weapon makers" and "The weapon shops of Isher" are old friends. These are among the better of van Vogt's works, perhaps not the absolute best, but close. For books written some fifty years ago still remarkably readable. Justly reprinted.
Note that "The weapon makers" was written first but that "The weapon shops of Isher", added later, is a prequel. The stories are also different in tone: "The makers" is highly dynamic (almost dynamite), while the "The shops" is much quieter.
