Great horror tales starring Freddy!
By A Customer
Yeah, some of the movies in the series were REALLY bad and made Freddy look like a psycho Bugs Bunny. This book brings you really spooky stories where Freddy Kruger shows everyone how bad he really is! Well written by various writers and fun, fun, fun!

Worth the price for Little's contribution alone...
By P. Ramirez
I am an avid reader of Bentley Little, and as anyone who knows anything about him is aware, he is nothing if not prolific. In addition to his 15 or so novel, he has written hundreds of short stories that have been published in dozens of magazines and anthologies.

I purchased this book solely because of I was intrigued as to what Bentley Little may contribute to the world of Freddy Krueger. (Having been a horror fanatic my entire life, I have watched the Nightmare on Elm Street numerous times. I have found the Elm Street in my own town.)

As was expected, Bentley Little wove a terrifying tale of terror in which the line between nightmare and reality is blurred to oblivion. Yes, a fascinating world indeed.

I have to give the book a 4 star rating. As strong as Little's contribution to the book was, some of the other writing was not up to par. All in all, a great read.

Loved this book!
By Michele Aden
I used to own this book back in college and then lost it. I was so thrilled to find it again. It was a great as I remembered! Freddy is darker and creepier. "Miles to Go Before I Sleep" and "Asleep at the Wheel" were my favorites.

Amazon.com Review
Robert Ludlum's trademark skills of intricate plotting, breakneck pacing, and high-wire drama are all on display in this gripping thriller. After his twin brother dies in a plane crash, Ben Hartman reluctantly takes his place in the investment firm started by their father, a Holocaust survivor. But then an old college buddy tries to kill Ben on a crowded Zurich street, setting off a chain of events that ultimately leads Ben into the thick of a worldwide conspiracy. Behind it is Sigma, a multinational cartel built on the rubble of World War II by industrialists and financiers bent on exploiting wartime technology and protecting their wealth from the threat of communism.

Accompanied by a beautiful American justice department agent, Ben eludes the assassins on his trail and follows Sigma's tentacles across Europe, to Brazil, Washington, and finally to a sanitarium known as the Clockworks in the Austrian Alps, where the horrifying agenda of a perverted new world order is revealed. Ludlum, who died between the writing and publishing of this book, was a master of the genre he helped popularize, and The Sigma Protocol shows him at the peak of his craft. --Jane Adams

From Library Journal
Anna Navarro, special agent for the Justice Department, has been assigned to investigate the deaths of several eminent men, all advanced in age and all connected to a mysterious group called Sigma, founded in the last years of World War II. An accident brings her together with Ben Hartman, an American investment banker who is in Zurich investigating the death of his twin brother and finds himself the target of an assassination attempt. Who is Sigma, and why are some of its members being killed? More importantly, what grand project is in the works? Readers may find the answer to these questions simplistic: Sigma is a partnership of high-ranking statesmen and industrialists, put together not only to spirit wealth out of Germany at the end of the war but also to stop communism's spread. Sigma's goal is to make the world safe for capitalism, a corporation whose board of directors is in charge of Western history itself. Unfortunately, Ludlum's latest novel (he died in March but left outlines for more posthumous thrillers) is not one of his better efforts. Even the sparks that eventually fly between Anna and Ben seem tepid.

From Booklist
Robert Ludlum's thrillers are generally consistent: their characters are wooden and their dialogue is clumsy, but their plots are compelling and well researched. They appeal to readers looking for action, not artistry. However, near the end of his career, he seemed to be developing a smoother style, an ability to create characters that felt real and dialogue that didn't sound so obviously contrived. His last novel, posthumously published, is actually quite good, a convoluted tale about a plot to kill off a number of people who, many years ago, were part of a conspiracy involving Nazis, Swiss gold, and a lot of deadly shenanigans. (There are, however, questions about the novel's provenance: Ludlum died in March, and final revisions were made in June, casting some doubt on who was responsible for the book's craftsmanship.) At the heart of the story are Anna Navarro, a mid-level government intelligence operative suddenly assigned to a case of toplevel importance, and Ben Hartman, a businessman who learns several surprising things about his own family, including the unpleasant history of his parents and the rather startling truth about his twin brother's death. As usual, Ludlum keeps things moving with plenty of gunplay and running about. Uncharacteristically, he also lets things slow down from time to time, long enough for us to get to know the players in this complicated story. After so many Ludlum novels that seem like carbon copies of one another, it's refreshing to see something different. First The Prometheus Deception (2000), and now this: proof of either a memorable swan song or a capable editor. David Pitt

One Of His Best?
By taking a rest
The death of Robert Ludlum was a great loss to the genre of writing that was synonymous with his name, and other greats in the Genre's Pantheon, like John Le Carre. The masters of these books are in no way limited to the two I mention; different readers will all have their favorites.
The reason for the question mark at the beginning of my comments is for several reasons which I believe are important to his admirers from his earliest books, and to those readers experiencing his work for the first time. The final version of this book was completed some three months after the author's death. There is no question that the book is vintage Ludlum, however for his long time readers, evidence of the pen of another will be apparent. There is sardonic dialogue that does not read as his, and the female character, while very well done, is not a pure Ludlum creation in my opinion either.
Nowhere will you find any evidence that this was published posthumously. Every detail on the jacket is in the present tense when referring to Mr. Ludlum. The reason I find this bothersome is that Mr. Ludlum is alleged to have completed 11 additional outlines for books prior to his death. I do not know what constitutes an outline, however it is not a book, and I hope the publishers will be completely candid regarding who was involved in writing these future books. I don't believe anyone can impersonate his style, so whatever may be forthcoming may be great or poor, what they will not be are true Robert Ludlum Novels.
"The Sigma Protocol", is a work that will bring long time admirers back to many of his earlier works. The first work I ever read was his novel, "The Matarese Circle", and this book is almost as good as my initial experience, and other of his works considered to be among his best. The only factor that detracts from this final work is that it is a bit too slick in style. Mr. Ludlum wrote many stories that were complex and cadenced with brilliant speed, however his characters were never those that constantly tossed off quick witted repartee, and endorsed everything they came in contact with by a brand name. Mr. Ludlum wrote books not advertisements.
In spite of whatever intrusion there may have been, this book will make the very short list of Ludlum's best. The tale races all over the globe, and revisits classic locales like Zurich, Vienna, and many others. The World War II element could have been a terrible cliché in a lesser writer's hands. This book portrays a familiar group, however it also legitimizes the suspension of disbelief with real science from recent years. When the book reaches its closing moments it is hard to maintain complete originality, here it was done as well as any could have penned it.
I enthusiastically recommend this book even though its provenance is not completely known. This is also the reason for the lack of the 5th star. There is no way for me to know this; I just don't feel Mr. Ludlum would have wanted readers to be mislead in any manner about his work, to any degree. The bottom line is this is a great read that demonstrates that to the very end of his career Mr. Ludlum was able to create a work that can stand with the best of what he had given readers for decades.

Perfect Beauty: A glamorous Socialite, her handsome lover, and Brutal Murder (St. Martin's True Crime Library), by Keith Elliot Greenberg,

Cynthia George was the stunning wife of one of Akron Ohio’s most successful restaurateurs, and mother of seven. She flaunted her money, her body…even her extra-marital affairs. Until she got in too deep with Jeff Zack, her younger, longtime lover who was also the father of one of her children—a secret that she kept for many years.

In a crime that shocked the heartland, Zack was killed, execution style, in the parking lot of a BJ’s Wholesale Club in Akron. From the beginning, investigators suspected Cynthia was involved. Little did they know that her other lover was the murderer. John Zaffino knew about Cynthia’s affair with Zack—and was jealous enough to do something about it…for good.

Chapter 1
“SIGNAL THIRTY-THREE.”
Detective Vince Felber quickly maneuvered his unmarked car into the right lane of Interstate 77, and looked for the exit sign. He’d been heading home for lunch when the reports crackling over the police radio caught his attention. There’d been some kind of incident near BJ’s, the massive wholesale outlet on the edge of the city, and cruisers had already been deployed. Now, it appeared, the occurrence was more serious than anyone had initially anticipated.
“Signal thirty-three,” Felber heard his boss, Sergeant Ed Moriarity repeat. “Detective Felber, we need you to go to Sixteen Seventy-seven Home Avenue.”
Felber was already on his way. “Forget about eating,” he smirked.
WHEN “SHOTS FIRED” first flashed in yellow across the desktop computer screen at Akron police headquarters, Sergeant Moriarity had barely grunted. Shots were fired all the time in Ohio’s former rubber capital, and the taciturn detective squad boss didn’t make an issue of it unless someone was on the receiving end of a gunshot. Because the computer was connected to the dispatch system, the sergeant could read a summary of every call handled by the department’s operators. He liked it when the lettering was green, signifying “non-emergency.” Yellow was a little more serious, but no cause for alarm. So Moriarity briefly looked away from the screen, and went back to his paperwork. A paragraph or so later, the bulletin changed to “man shot,” and the phones started ringing. Moriarity pushed his documents aside, picked up his radio, and keyed it to transmit to all available detectives. Then, he stood up to converge with them at the scene.
The moment Felber received the message, his focus shifted. Working to prevent his adrenaline surge from controlling his actions, he reminded himself that he was in an unmarked vehicle, and had to obey all local traffic laws. But this would not be an issue. Soon after Felber was dispatched, traffic slowed to a crawl.
Only rarely were Akron’s gray skies penetrated by the sun, and today—June 16, 2001—was one of those days. The weather was warm, but not hot—a spectacular afternoon. Kids played baseball on sandlots all over the city. People Rollerbladed and rode bicycles. On this Saturday before Father’s Day, stores were crowded with shoppers who seemed eager to get outside and take advantage of the fair temperatures.
The first report had come in while most of Akron’s detectives were out on their lunch breaks. Even at its busiest, though, the weekend detective squad generally consisted of a skeleton staff, comprised of investigators from both the Crimes Against Persons Unit—devoted to physical crimes against individuals, including rapes, robberies, assaults and homicides—and the Property Unit—specializing in thefts, burglaries and B&Es (breaking and entering episodes). Despite its relatively diminutive size, Akron was not immune to the urban friction that sometimes permeated the industrial Midwest. Murders were no longer a rarity; the city of 212,000 averaged twenty homicides each year. When one took place, the Crimes Against Persons Unit occasionally borrowed a detective or two from the Crimes Against Property division.
Today, Felber was on loan.
At 39 years old, Felber was often mistaken for a doctor, lawyer or engineer—anything but a cop. And, indeed, his background reinforced this. After high school, he’d lived at home and commuted to Akron University, majoring in engineering. After taking a leave of absence from his studies, he registered at Kent State, and pursued journalism. Although he’d graduated with a degree in advertising, he felt too attached to the city of his birth to pursue the career in New York, Chicago or even Cleveland. As clichéd as it sounded, he wanted to make the world a better place. So in 1992, he joined the Akron P.D.
Because of his curly brown hair and vaguely Mediterranean features, Felber was often mistaken for Lebanese or Jewish; in fact, he was German and Italian. To some, he seemed introspective, to others, introverted—qualities he used to his advantage when interrogating a suspect. Despite his six-foot-three-inch stature, Felber could make himself virtually invisible, allowing a perp to blurt out the kinds of extravagant claims and contradictory information that prosecutors found invaluable.
In social situations, strangers were baffled by the detective’s acidic wit, delivered dryly with a straight face. But his friends on the police department had no trouble deciphering what he truly meant. In fact, many shared the same sense of humor themselves.
“Why’d she do it?” a neighbor might ask a cop responding to a suicide call.
“Evidently,” he’d reply without even a hint of a smile, “she wasn’t happy.”
Felber knew that these kinds of responses were simply a defense mechanism to shield the public from confidential information, and the officers themselves from the type of depression that arose after confronting misfortune and tragedy. Felber compared the mentality to the gallows humor soldiers relied on during wartime. Of course, despite the potential to suddenly find oneself in a life-and-death struggle on High Street or Mineola Avenue, war was a lot more severe than patrolling the streets of Akron. But in war, the enemy was generally a faceless menace from a foreign land. In Akron, police were seeing their own people at their worst. And if the job wasn’t tough enough, there was the challenge of negotiating the political combat zone in the station house.
“It’s not the people on the outside,” went the slogan among Felber’s peers, “it’s the people on the inside who burn you out.”
Still, the joking deepened the brotherhood between Felber and his fellow detectives. It was one of the things that he loved most about the job.
FROM I-77, FELBER switched to Route 8–North, exiting at Howe Avenue in Akron’s Chapel Hill section, and passing under the Interstate. At first, there was nothing unusual about the sight on the other side of the windshield: a sunny parking lot crowded with traffic and people wheeling shopping carts. Then, he spotted the crime scene—a gas station situated in front of BJ’s, the boxy store anchoring the nearby strip mall. Another 500 yards, Felber noted, and the Akron detective squad could have enjoyed a quiet weekend. That’s how close the incident had been to Cuyahoga Falls, the suburb that abutted Akron just north of the city line.
For a moment, Felber felt a sense of detachment, observing the police cars and frantic officers from a distance, like a person watching some cinematic fiction in the darkness of a movie theater. Then, he was being waved through the barricades, steering around cruisers and exchanging nods with cops he knew from the station house. He couldn’t help but flash back to his childhood, when he’d hear police sirens from his room and burst out the front door, running down the street to gape at the action. Always, the barrier was manned by some stern officer, holding back the curious and staring back, tight-lipped, when anyone tried prying loose a morsel of information. Now, all these years later, Felber was the object of curiosity, with the eyes of the public upon him.
Stepping out of his vehicle and past the yellow crime-scene tape, Felber felt a bit self-conscious and uncomfortable. On the day he graduated from the police academy, he’d crossed the line from onlooker to active participant. But this wasn’t the time for contemplation. Sergeant Moriarity had beaten him to the scene, and taken it over, monitoring the activity in the parking lot closely while delivering instructions to investigators.
It was an odd place to kill someone. “If you think you’re going to be murdered,” the detectives often said, “go to the most public place possible. You’ll scare the killer away.”
Apparently, that strategy hadn’t worked. The BJ’s parking lot was one of the busiest places in the city—a familiar, seemingly safe location completely incongruous with murder.
The detective walked up to Moriarity, and received a synopsis of the morning’s events.
Minutes earlier, an ambulance had removed the body of 44-year-old Jeff Zack, a prematurely white-haired businessman who’d seemed impervious to danger. As an Israeli paratrooper, he’d been trained to navigate minefields, and fight alone behind enemy lines against armor, attack helicopters and infantry. In the United States, he’d gained a reputation as a smooth-talking, strong-willed guy who used the knowledge of Arabic he’d acquired in the Middle East to enter into a number of business ventures with a network of Arab-Americans. On a good day, the six-foot-four-inch Zack seemed like a jovial man who didn’t let the rigors—or responsibilities—of life bother him. But very suddenly, he could explode in anger, yelling, threatening and using his hulking size to intimidate.
Zack was a well-known character at BJ’s—for all the wrong reasons. A serial adulterer, he was notorious for flirting with the female clerks. At first, his overtures seemed harmless. But after procuring the phone number for a pretty, 17-year-old clerk, he began badgering her with calls, even offering to pay her for sex. Eventually, her father contacted Zack, and informed him that the girl was underage.
“So what?” he replied.
Incredibly, Zack continued to phone the teen, prompting the other clerks to band together and report him to management. One month before the murder, Zack had been banned from BJ’s.
Nonetheless, he was possessed with the uncanny ability to learn the intricacies of whatever business he was pursuing, whether it was scrap metal, insurance, credit cards or heating and air-conditioning. In fact, he’d procured his Ford Explorer at an employee discount, after a transaction with the automaker. He currently divided his time between, among other things, an Akron flooring company, a landscaping operation and a vending machine enterprise. It was that last that initially aroused interest in investigators. He’d shop at BJ’s to purchase candy in bulk to fill his vending machines. And, rumor had it, the business was secretly bankrolled by Zack’s former paramour, Cynthia George.
Around Akron, the stunning George was described as a “socialite.” A coal miner’s daughter, Cynthia had turned her back on her past, and reinvented herself as the wife of wealthy restaurateur Ed George. With her sparkling eyes and engaging smile, Cynthia was an ideal hostess at her husband’s night spot, the Tangier, a local institution characterized by purple neon and an Arabian Nights motif. She’d also entered beauty contests, taken hula lessons and consumed self-help tomes. At the Georges’ 8,100-square-foot palace outside of town, Cynthia seemed to live in splendor with her Christmas card–perfect brood of children, jewelry and furs, and a troupe of servants.
While Ed George supported his wife’s lifestyle, Cynthia came and went as she pleased, attracting the attention of men of varied backgrounds and often forceful temperaments. With Ed away at the restaurant, Jeff Zack was a regular guest in the wing of the house Cynthia had all but claimed for herself. For eight years, they carried on an affair, and even had a baby together—a child Cynthia’s unsuspecting husband deeply loved and raised as his own. Some were shocked by her lack of discretion, but Cynthia didn’t care. She’d long ago liberated herself from the conventions of her childhood. In her mansion, ensconced in opulence, she was indifferent to the jealous condemnation of others, indulging instead in the freedom afforded those of her station.
But a month earlier, the romance between Cynthia and Jeff had come crashing to a halt. There had been tears and angry phone calls and—as was common when Zack found himself in a predicament that didn’t suit him—threats. To the few who knew her well, Cynthia had confided that she feared Zack exposing their relationship and love child to her husband—resulting in divorce and, even more terrifying, the evaporation of the prosperity she’d labored so long to procure.
But Cynthia was far from the only person in Akron engaged in an adversarial relationship with Jeff Zack. The alliance between the former Israeli warrior and his Arab business partners was always tenuous at best. And because of his penchant for bouncing from one scheme to another—many bordering on the illegal—some described Jeff as a man who acquired new enemies with every personal and professional transaction.
Today, on possibly the prettiest day of the year, the wrong person had caught up with him. As Felber discussed the crime with Sergeant Moriarity, a call came in from Akron City Hospital. Shortly after his arrival there, Zack had died from the bullet to the head he’d received while pulling up to the gas pumps.
It would be Felber’s first homicide, and he realized that there was a great task ahead of him. He’d always prided himself on being a thorough detective, but it was obvious that this case was going to receive a lot more scrutiny than a breaking and entering at a florist’s shop. Every report would have to be written with greater contemplation and detail. Every observation would be dissected by supervisors, prosecutors, defense attorneys and, ultimately, judges. In the years to come, Felber would find himself battling reluctant witnesses, obstructionist attorneys and incompetence within his own department. But he didn’t care. He was looking forward to it.
Nobody, he reasoned, should get away with murder.

Not a well written book...
By Twinkiebigbird
First of all if you read the back cover of the book you know what happened and who the killer was. That was a bummer!
I really enjoy true crime stories but this one was really hard to read because it was so boring. The first 100 pages were a real snore.
If you want to read a good true crime book try Murder in Napa. This book was interesting from start to finish.

This book is great.

I love true crime and this is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. Amazing detail and not just the boring court proceedings. Well researched and well written.

Average True Crime Read
By KDMask
Although one of the lead detectives co-wrote this book, it's still very heavy on police details and short on story. I saw the case on TV many times and read about it; the photos in this book are clearly lacking. If you like your crime books to be more about the 'inside' of the case, this is for you. There is a lot of detail on the animosity of the the key players at the police station and I sometimes felt this was the main objective of the book. As someone that reads a lot of True Crime, I didn't find this a very compelling read.

Stephen's frantic, emotional search for Tara made national headlines, and the case was featured on Dateline among other television shows and news outlets. “Vivid characters carry the action in latest book about grisly Metro Detroit murder . . . a page turner.” ―The Detroit News

“[Blood in the Snow is] the third book about the case but it's also the only one that had police cooperation. And that makes all the difference. . . . Henderson's book offers behind-the-scenes insights. He crafts a story of the Grants' marriage, their relations with family members and later, displays how those personalities manifested themselves during trial preparation. In all, it's a wild ride of a read that's still compelling.” ―Metro Times

He Does It Again
By T. Henderson
I stumbled upon my first Tom Henderson true crime book seven or eight years ago and bought it because we share a name. I loved it and have bought all the others as they came out. The last one disappointed a tad because basically all the main characters were unlikeable, but Blood in the Snow is great! I loved the cops working the case, especially Koz. And the black humor had me laughing out loud, especially Stephen Grant's drug-fueled drive to northern Michigan as police were searching his house and finding body parts, and his run through a blizzard at the aptly named Wilderness State Park. There was some hilarious dialogue by the cops who babysat him in the hospital after he was found shoeless in the now. I bought this book Saturday and had it finished by Sunday night. Fantastic!

Or: Why Stephen Grant will NEVER be named husband of the year
By Steve Reina
INTRODUCTORY NOTE: I'm a huge Tom Henderson fan. From A Deadly Affair forward, this Michigan based crime writer has been turning out consistently good crime novels based on Michigan area cases.

In this book, we learn the story of Stephen Grant. In 2007, Grant took up an affair with his German born au pair. After being able to seduce the young woman to give him oral sex, Grant decided he was going to short circuit the divorce process by killing his wife Tara, cutting up her body and pretending that she'd run away in the middle of marital spat.

Just as recounted in this book, I remember the process unfolding locally as Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel patiently and deliberately permitted Grant to hang himself while slowing taking the necessary steps to uncover the physical evidence of his wrongdoing.

As written by Henderson, by the time the police were ready to make their arrest, Grant had already implicated himself through contradictory and nonsensical statements in the media and of course by keeping incriminating evidence of the murder in his garage.

More than some tsk tsk account though, this book takes you inside Grant's mind from comitting the crime to his attempt to escape justice.

Like all these Henderson books as a practicing attorney I know many of the professionals involved in this case and I'm proud to say that without exception each and every one of them is as dedicated and hard working as portrayed in this book.

While admittedly this book has particular resonance for Michigan residents, I think crime readers generally would also benefit from it's gripping, page turning features.

Oh and yeah...why Stephen Grant will NEVER be named husband of the year. When you read this book, you'll know and I guarantee, it will haunt you long after you finish reading.

Do not like. Will move on
By S. Murray
Obviously I am not on the bandwagon for this author that other reviewers on here are. First of all, the short, clipped writing style in the present tense is not entertaining, but rather annoying and it comes off as gimmicky. Secondly, no pictures, at least in the kindle version I read. But most importantly is that the author, after speculating the entire book about the so-called all important motive for murder being some seemingly innocuous affair with some au pair, fails to even acknowledge the most obvious motive...financial. Did Tara Grant have life insurance or other financial means of making her husband rich if she disappeared? Did Stephen Grant stand to financially benefit from her death other than movie/book deals? You will never know by reading this book. Put simply, this book does not deserve the praise the other devoted fans of this author have heaped on him for this lackluster effort. This may as well be some lines from the book... "Does not like it. Will move on. Will find other books to read." Whatever.

Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine Sniper, by Jack Coughlin, Casey Kuhlman, Donald A. Davis

Marine Sniper Sgt. Jack Coughlin carried his specially designed bolt action rifle―and its nearly magical scope―into a landscape of sandstorms, firefights, and chaos during Operation Iraqi Freedom. As marines charged through the desert and leapfrogged through bizarre, treacherous urban battlefields, Coughlin and his sniper teammate did their job and did it well: One by one, they spotted their targets―up to a half a mile away. And one by one their targets died. Coughlin has more than 60 confirmed kills.

In this extraordinary account from battlefield Iraq, Coughlin tells the story of his own unique war, from stealthy, slowly-unfolding long range kills to unplanned firefights―and how one sniper team adapted and thrived in a battle zone unlike any they faced before…

With vivid portraits of Coughlin's fellow marines and the battles they fought from Al Kut to Baghdad center, SHOOTER takes readers to the frontlines of the war in Iraq and gives a brutally honest account of a man trained to hunt humans, who had the courage to do his deadly job―and live with it once the shooting stopped.

Review
“The 3rd Battalion has a veteran sniper, Staff Sergeant Jack Coughlin, for whom the war in Iraq was only the latest of many wars; he fought in Mogadishu, too. On the first day of battle at the Diyala Bridge, he had eleven kills. He is one of the best snipers in the Marine Corps, perhaps the very best. When I asked one of his commanders about his skills, the commander smiled and said, 'I'm just glad he's on our side.'” ―Peter Maas, war correspondent and bestselling author of Love Thy Neighbor

Inside the Mind of a Sniper
By Junebug
We're all raised hearing things like, "Don't hit your brother," and "Be a good boy," etc. So how does one go from being taught to "be nice" to being a trained killer? Shooter takes you inside the mind of a sniper. The author is a trained professional, and takes his "art" (as he refers to it) very seriously. Because he and others like him are experts at their job, American lives are saved. He admits to being haunted by his former targets in his dreams and is open about the strain of being deployed had on his marriage. Recommended.

So much potential...wasted
By N. Berry
The book is a fairly quick read, if you can wade through the neverending pumped up ego of this guy. "A guy on my team got one kill there...I would have gotten 10..." Many more statements like that throughout.

Interesting review here from someone here claiming they were in the 3/4 and Coughlin was not involved in the hottest action in Iraq. You really get that sense in reading the book, despite his best efforts to convince us otherwise.

Overall, not a bad read, but I'm sure there are betters on the subject matter. Also, can someone please find an editor who actually reviews the draft before print? Spelling/grammar errors throughout.

disciplined killer a necessary good
By Mick B
How do we respond to those who would kill us? In this book Marine sniper Coughlin gives a great deal of answers....and shows the question cannot really be answered, just dealt with. We've really only been in one war that we started...the Revolutionary War. All others have been "responses" to threats.....and therein lies the trouble. Many Americans don't want to respond, or think we respond too much or too little. It is up to men like Coughlin to do our dirty work....just as cops must deal with drunks and molesters.

In this book I learned that the Marines are taught to kill....not to decide on what is a battlefield or what is not...once they're there...that's it. Coughlin must decide for himself, if the threat is a real one or not....and he does so with intelligence, training, and responsibiity. His personal reactions, and emotional battles with his "job" are a microcosm of the experience of all big countries....when and how does a civilized society kill its enemies, and who are they?

The book doesn't, and really cannot, answer these questons. What it does do, is give an insight into the dedication and integrity of the Marines through the experience of one man. It also gives a first person account of the Iraq war, which is lacking by the coverage of the highly filtered "news media" who refuse to respect men like Coughlin, and choose to see him rather as a pawn of a political game, which he clearly is not. The book helps us separate the man from the military operation....too often we are taught to trash vets like those from Vietnam who were not responsible for the decision making...only for doing their job with dedication and whatever honor they could retrieve from the situation.

This book tosses all of these issues out there....but leaves you with a respect for the military men who must deal with threats....and the discussion then turns again on what is a threat....we will always wrestle with these problems as a culture and as a nation, and must always hold in the highest esteem those who risk their lives to allow us the comfort and luxury to discuss these issues. In many Third World countries, there is no opportunity to discuss these issues....

But her recipe for social advancement sours when Judge Cummings-Browne not only snubs her entry--but falls over dead! After her quiche's secret ingredient turns out to be poison, she must reveal the unsavory truth…

Agatha has never baked a thing in her life! In fact, she bought her entry ready-made from an upper crust London quicherie. Tons of Extreme Typos
By Grandma Geek
I am currently reading this book on my Kindle. (I am about 1/3 of the way through the book.) This Kindle version has many, many typos and some of them are absurd. For instance, this book's main character is Agatha Raisin. In at least three places, she is called Angela. I just read a paragraph where another of the characters was called by yet another of the character's names. There are also many less obvious typos like "teh" for "the", or "at at."

The name mixups are distracting. I like the story, but the "translation" is ridiculous. When you pay for a book, you do not expect so many very bad errors. I do not know who is responsible for the errors. If it is the publisher, they need to get their act together.

I'm an Agatha Raisin Fan!!!
By DeniseRodgers
I didn't like this book to start...but I'd seen so many good review of this series that I thought I'd give it a chance. Beaton's Agatha isn't exactly likable from the start. She's bossy and insensitive. She also seems unrealistic. The premise of the book is that she (Agatha) has taken an early retirement to settle in Carsley in the famous English Cottswold countryside. She has no friends or contacts in or near Carsley, or in London, for that matter. She is widowed, but not much is made of her husband and she doesn't seem to miss him at all. And yet she jumps into this new stage of her life with two feet and damn the consequences.

Despite all of Agatha Raisin's negative qualities, or maybe because of them, she starts to feel real. Somewhere in the book, I started to care about what happened to her. I've gone on to read many of Beaton's Agatha books, (and most of them in order) but this is the first I've reviewed. I've become somewhat obsessed with reading them, making me, I guess, a fan! As a matter of fact, I've read the first book twice, to remind myself of Agatha's beginnings, as least as it pertains to the series.

So I highly recommend this book if you enjoy cozies and are willing to get to know Agatha. She is one of the most unique cozy protagonists, and I've grown to appreciate her company. Five Stars!!!

I love Agatha Raisin
By Erin Lee Arvin
Simply put, I love Agatha Raisin. I've always been a fan of cozy mysteries but this is my first M.C. Beaton book. Also, I love reading about the Cotswolds, as a visit to central England when I was younger is my favorite vacation of my life. Brings back great memories. I love how irreverent and snappish Agatha is, but for some reason it doesn't come off as genuinely bitchy. Can't wait to read more!

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In Wozencraft's brilliant third psychological thriller (after 2004's Wanted), Katherine "Kit" Metcalf must contend with post-traumatic stress (she was raped as a college student) and face her ultimate fear, her Texas Ranger dad, Wade, who hides immoral appetites behind a heroic image. A former realtor, Kit now pole dances for Blaze, "Austin's premier gentleman's club," though in order to do so she numbs herself with alcohol. Her sister, Jenny, an Austin police detective investigating a porn ring, is about to marry Luke Saner, an undercover cop looking into the murder of a Blaze regular. When Jenny's body later turns up in a Blanco County well, Kit seeks therapy and unwittingly puts her therapist (and herself) in danger. As the pace quickens, whom can she trust? Luke? Her dad? With eloquent prose that's unflinchingly honest, Wozencraft charts Kit's crusade for justice, revealing not only the rocky terrain of grief, addiction and rape recovery but also the smooth shores of survival. tense psychological thriller
By A Customer
Katherine "Kit" Metcalf and her sister Jenny reacted differently to the family dynamics after their mom died. Whereas Jenny obeyed their martinet father by becoming a cop like him and is engaged to an undercover police officer, Kit chose philosophy in college and avoided anything remotely involving law enforcement. Adding to Kit's estrangement is a rape that she never has come to terms with or gotten over. In anger towards all males, Kit becomes a stripper at Austin's Blaze gentleman's club where she can safely tease men with glass between her and them.

However, the dynamics change again when Austin police detective Jenny, investigating a porn ring and related murder tied to Blaze, is found dead. Needing to obtain justice for the sister she feels she let down, Kit begins to obtain therapy with psychiatrist Dr. Emily Wolfe and investigates her sibling's murder over the objections of everyone she knows. However one objector has personal reasons to prevent Kit from succeeding either with therapy or her case. That adversary attacks Dr. Wolfe and steals Kit's file. Kit ponders if it is her dad, her late sister's fiancé Luke Saner, or someone else close to her who needs the truth to remain buried perhaps in her subconscious mind.

More a psychological thriller than an amateur sleuth tale, fans of both sub-genres and anyone who appreciates a deep character study will want to read this superb candid tale. The story line is action-packed, but it is the psyche of Kit that grips the audience as she grieves with no help from her stiff upper lip family who didn't help her when her mom died. Kim Wozencraft provides an incredible look at a woman over the edge without a safety net. The Devil's Backbone is a chillingly thrilling tale.

Kit Metcalf wakes up in a park and does not remember how she got there. She's works as a dancer in a gentleman's club called Blaze's in Austin. Kit could not be more different than her sister Jenny. Jenny is a detective, engaged to be married soon. Kit meets Luke, Jenny's fiancé who has been working undercover at Blaze's. Kit was able to fend off an attacker in the club's parking lot. She could barely handle the news that her sister was murdered. Not knowing who to trust, she decides to counseling. Dr. Wolfe is soon threatened to stop seeing Kit and physically attacked. Another dancer from the club, Cheryl is found dead. She can't help but feel she's next. Kit needs to trust Luke as she tries to help him investigate Jenny's death. Complex, psychological thriller that is hard to put down.

Mediocre at best
By Sharksfan11
Cover calls it "A brilliant psychological thriller" I would definitely not go that far. I'm in a Mystery book club and this was the next book on the list. Story line is just Ok, I'd elaborate, but it seems the other reviewers have explained it enough. I guess if you are in the mood for a quick read it's ok, but there are better options.
