One By One They Begin To Die

On a picturesque street in Sacramento County, California, three healthy saplings stand side by side. But what they symbolize are the deaths of three innocent people-two of them children. And the man who allegedly took their lives, then eerily planted trees in their honor...was their own husband and father.

Shockingly, Mysteriously...

Hearts went out to Jack Barron when his wife Irene died mysteriously in her sleep. Soon after, when his two young children were also found dead in their beds, suspicions were aroused about Barron. Then, when his fifty-two-year-old mother died, also of asphyxiation in her sleep, the four deaths seemed too coincidental to ignore.

Were They All Dying For Daddy?

Was this "devoted" husband and father really a cold-blooded murderer who smothered his loved ones while they slept? Was he the victim of a bizarre syndrome, whereby a parent kills a child to gain sympathy and attention? With first-hand interviews and exclusive inside information, bestselling portrait of a man who may have been driven beyond his control to commit the most unspeakable of acts.

Great book, but maybe written a bit too soon
By A Customer
This book was very good, it was a very easy read (I read it in a day and a half), and the author did a good job of making me feel like I knew the characters. The story is about a man, Jack Barron, who smothered his wife, then the following year smothered his 4-year-old son, and then the following year smothered his 4-year-old daughter. After all of that, he even smothered his own mother. It is incredible that nothing was done before all these murders, but the author does a good job of explaining the problems facing law enforcement. The only true disappointment is that the book was written after the preliminary exam and before the trial. I did some research and learned that Jack Barron was tried by a judge, not a jury, and was convicted of murdering his mother, wife, and son. He was acquitted of murdering his daughter. He was sentenced to life in prison w/o parole. The full text of Irene's letter is included in the court opinion. She complained that Jack never talked to her about anything anymore. The letter was ruled inadmissible after the preliminary hearing, but during the trial Jack testified that he and Irene had only gotten into 2 minor disagreements during their marriage because they always talked things out. He also testified that they never discussed divorce. The judge let the letter into evidence for impeachment. Jack challenged that ruling on appeal but he lost. The most recent information I can find is that the California Court of Appeals affirmed his convictions and a rehearing was denied in May 2002. In sum, I recommend this book to true-crime readers.

A very well written account of a bizarre personality who murdered his wife, his kids and his mother. A realatively short book, but a real page turner, in that the story and suspense moves along without getting bogged down in a lot of superfulous detail. A very good book.

HUSBAND, FATHER, SON, SERIAL KILLER...
By lawyeraau
This is a pretty straightforward telling of a true crime story that involved Jack Barron, a man whose wife, son, and daughter all seemed to have died in that order in their sleep in Sacramento California within two years of each other. Thanks to a bumbling, seemingly incompetent, Coroner's Office and a fairly uninterested Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, what should have been obvious after his wife's death, went unnoticed by those who should have known. One cannot help but speculate what might have been had the authorities acted with some semblance of competence. Perhaps, there might not have been three more needless deaths.

Consequently, Jack Barron went on to ensure that his little son and young daughter met the same fate as their mother. Still, no one in Sacramento law enforcement made a move to stop Jack Barron after each death, and the Coroner's Office still dithered in terms of its medical findings and conclusions. It was not until Barron moved to another jurisdiction, Benicia, California, and his own mother met the same fate as her daughter-in-law and grandchildren, did the Sacramento authorities really sit up and take notice, as law enforcement in Benicia was immediately suspicious of the circumstances surrounding his mother's death, especially when they discovered what had happened to the rest of Barron's family in Sacramento. The Coroner's Office for Benicia had no problem determining the cause of death for Barron's mother, given the medical findings. They were the same findings that had existed for Barron's wife. The only difference in the determination of the cause of death was the competence of the Coroner for the corresponding jurisdiction.

While the story is told in a fairly straightforward fashion, it is a story that is somewhat premature in the telling, as the book ends with Jack Barron awaiting trial for murder in Sacramento, California for the deaths of his wife, son, and daughter. His trial for his mother's murder would follow the one in Sacramento. So, there is no trial information or resolution in this book. One has to go on the internet to discover the eventual result of the trial. The lack of this information in the book is disappointing, as it leaves the reader hanging. Those readers who enjoy the true crime genre will still get a modicum of enjoyment from reading this book but will be brought up short by the obvious drawback in the story.

An unforgettable character
By John Shannonhouse
The Traveler in Black lives in a world of wild magic, and he seems to be one of the great immortal powers.

But his power is very limited.

He can grant wishes -- the wishes of other people, not his own. And he does, but usually not the way they expect. And he does it when they are not expecting it.

I am sure you have heard: "Be careful what you wish for. You might get it." The Traveler in Black is the personification of that statement.

Still, while he seems very impersonal, he also comes across as a GOOD person. The ones who suffer as a result of his granted wishes deserve it.

And as to leaving the world a better place -- he leaves the world a place with less magic. Every time he grants a wish, some great source of magic disappears. The final story helps explain his long journey.

The Traveler in Black has lived in my imagination for a long time now. He is a presence you cannot forget, unique in fantasy.

Ages ago I introduced him into my Dungeons and Dragons game. It was interesting to say how carefully players started making sure they did not phrase stupid things as wishes, and how often they still failed in doing so.

Future Nostalgia
By R. P. Cotta Jr.
I gave "The Wild Shore," the first installment in Kim Robinson's "Three California's" Trilogy, three stars. But it is really more like a 3.5-star book, even almost a four. More on that below.

This is a "post-apocalypse" book. I've lately been indulging myself in a few of these. (See my recent reviews of "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen, or, a bit further back, "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel. Following this commentary will be reviews of "The Taking" by Dean Koontz, and "The Girl With All the Gifts" by M.R. Carey. "Doomsday" fans ought to read them all, even if you don't read my reviews. Anyway, back to "The Wild Shore.")

"The Wild Shore" is set on the southern California coast, between San Clemente and San Diego, on what would today be the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. It is centered in a place called San Onofre, or the San Onofre Valley. There is no current town called San Onofre in the area. There is a San Onofre State Beach in the general vicinity, and perhaps geography to match the setting. The place is real, but there is no village there. Yet.

Sometimes, authors give their places or characters a symbolic name. "San Onofre" appears to refer to the Roman Catholic Saint Onuphrius, a Fourth of Fifth Century cleric. The name Onuphrius is, in turn, derived from an Egyptian word (Wnn-nfr), meaning "he who is continuingly good," and, in this sense may describe the protagonist in this story, young Henry Fletcher. He is a good sort of lad, and the book is his story, told in the first person.

Set in the year 2047, "The Wild Shore" is about some of those who survived, or were born after, a surprise nuclear attack which "murdered" the United States of America in the late 20th Century. The old Continental United States is now "quarantined" under the authority of the United Nations. Japanese naval ships patrol the West Coast, and Hawaii is a Japanese possession. The island of Santa Catalina, off the Orange County coast, is a Japanese naval base. "San Onofre" is a small agricultural and fishing community living on a subsistence economy. There are (maybe) between 50 and 100 people who live there. There are other communities in the region, as well as roving scavengers. These more widely-dispersed communities meet once or twice a year at "swap meets" where goods are bartered. Robinson makes these conclaves sound like a medieval fair. Little is told about the fate of the rest of the former United States.

The plot revolves around the revival of nationalism in San Diego, and attempts by some of the remaining outposts of American civilization to organize a "resistance" to "make America great again." (Apologies to current political hopefuls.) The themes center on the wisdom, costs, and collateral effects of these efforts, as the movement eventually comes to San Onofre.

For devotees of "Apocalypse" stories, "The Wild Shore" very much picks up where "Earth Abides," the 1949 post-apocalyptic novel by George R. Stewart (a classic in its own right) leaves off. Although the causes of the respective calamities differ (in "Earth Abides," it was a fast-acting and highly lethal disease), both focus on life AFTER the collapse of civilization. "The Wild Shore" has elements of political intrigue, conflict and competition among different characters, tragedy, and Human perseverance. But it also devotes a great many pages to describing the pastoral lifestyle of San Onofre, and how its residents have to work hard and cooperate to ensure they have enough to eat, stay warm in winter (which has grown more severe post-nuke), and care for one another. In these respects, themes Robinson is known for -- ecological sustainability, social justice, and the interplay between nature and culture -- figure prominently.

So, about those stars. I don't think this is a "five-star" book. "The Road," by Cormac McCarthy is my idea of a "five-star" read. Perhaps Robinson's "Mars Trilogy," (one Nebula, two Hugos) is a five-star read. (I'll let you all know.) But "The Wild Shore" is a little sedate to qualify as suspenseful, and there are no really new concepts suggested by Robinson in his post-nuke world. In that respect, the book is sort of "ho-hum." But it is, on the other hand, realistic, and his main characters mostly heartwarming. So, three stars, wishing I could give it 3.5 stars.

I enjoyed the book enough to read the next in this series, "The Gold Coast," (anybody got a spare copy?) This is despite my frequent lament that serial fiction rarely improves with successive installments. Maybe Robinson will be an exception.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope you enjoy "The Wild Shore." And don't forget to shut off the lights on your way out.

The Right and Need to 'Matter'
By Patrick Shepherd
The world of SF has been filled with apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic stories since its very beginning as a separately identifiable genre. Do we really need another one? In the case of this book, the answer to that is a resounding yes! Robinson has crafted a finely wrought work of character and theme that will resonate with readers, that is highly evocative of some of the other truly fine works within this sub-genre, from Pangborn's Davy to Stewart's Earth Abides, that delivers insights into societies and individual human motivations at a level rarely found in any fiction.
This book is part of Robinson's triptych (the other two pieces being The Gold Coast and Pacific Edge) that deals with various futures as seen from the perspective of Orange County, California. These books are related by theme only, and can all be read independently of the others. In this one the United States has effectively been destroyed by the use of about 3000 neutron bombs that were smuggled in by truck (the country of origin never provable but supposed to be Russia), turning almost every city into a waste land and wiping out the economic and industrial structure that allows today's Americans to enjoy a standard of living so very much higher than most of the rest of the world. The United States has now been placed in quarantine by the rest of the world, and any attempts to try to re-organize and re-build the country are ruthlessly disrupted. Orange County has returned to a fishing/agrarian level society with government by communal consensus. But this is the mere background to a remarkable tale of two young men, Henry and Steve, trying to find their own way and life answers within this community, underneath the strong influence of the town elder Tom, one of the last survivors who remembers what America was like before the bombs. Henry and Steve are close friends but are two very different personalities, and how each reacts to the opportunity to 'do something' to those who are maintaining the quarantine forms the main basis of the book.
The depth of characterization here is remarkable, and the portrayal of the society that grew under these imagined conditions is just as remarkable for its believability and economic viability. I found myself living and feeling right along with the main characters, could see myself in just the situations portrayed, facing the same moral dilemmas and wondering just how I would react, what I would do. The prose is smooth and with a nice balance between description, dialogue, and action, and a theme that is presented via 'show, not tell' methods.
All of the 'Three Californias' books are good, but this one is clearly the best, and should be put on everyone's 'must read' list.

Coming of age tale bogs down in implausible plotlines and dull characters
By Quickhappy
When I learned about the Three Californias trilogy, I was eager to read all three. Instead I barely made it through this first book. ¬The Wild Shore, a story about Southern Californians who have survived nuclear apocalypse, begins well enough. It paints a vivid picture of a village that survives by fishing and farming, and by steering clear of the menacing scavengers who roam the suburban ruins. But the tale deteriorates into half-baked confusion of ideas: a Japanese conspiracy, a corrupt and violent mayor determined to free America, and a collection of unconvincing characters taking different sides. The novel fails as a coming-of-age tale, founders on weak action and lame characters, and bores the reader for long stretches at a time. Even the action sequences are cruelly dull, partly because the reader cares so little about what happens to these people. Once excited to read all three parts of the trilogy, I put this dreary book down likely never to try another tale by Robinson.

AUTHORITIES OPENED THE DOOR ON ONE MAN'S HIDDEN LIFE…
Mike DeBardeleben was known as the Mall Passer for the way he passed off fake money at local shopping centers. But when U.S. Secret Service agents finally arrested him, they were met with more than just phony bills. They found that their counterfeiter led a shocking double life…

ONLY TO DISCOVER A HOUSE OF HORRORS.DeBardeleben's home was littered with drugs, bondage gear, and a collection of audio tapes in which he recorded the abuse of his countless victims. As the evidence mounted, a terrifying profile emerged of a man who forced women to be his accomplices, practiced sadism, even dressed up in women's clothes―a serial killer whose depraved fantasies led to a spree of violence that would last as long as eighteen years…and would end in a sentence of almost 400 years in prison. As terrifying as it is true, this is the story of a man who proved to be, beyond the shadow of a doubt, BEYOND CRUEL.

Not Enough Detail for Me! A Good True Crime Book!
By Sylviastel
This book was a fast read partly because the author has written short chapters with specific titles. Every true crime writer is probably trying to find the next Ted Bundy. Mike is no Ted Bundy although he thinks he is smarter and more sophisticated but a student of the man's crimes. Mike is a very sick man who has done horrible acts of violence towards innocent women including his wives and other women like real estate agents. His murder count is a lot lower to our knowledge because it's possible that he killed more but won't talk about it. He's in jail for life. He did have a sick, perverse sexuality which featured unwilling participants in bondage. He murdered a couple of women and a man who ill-stricken in Greece, New York. There are pictures and some basic information about his crimes but not enough detail or thorough explanation of how he became a monster in human flesh.

Beyond the Pale
By JMack
As one of the judges in Mike DeBardeleben's trials commented, DeBardeleben's crimes are "beyond the pale". So perverse and depraved were his fantasies, that using the term sadist is not an exaggeration in labeling him. What makes his crimes unusual are the counterfeiting schemes that parallel his rampage. Not only did he devise a sophisticated way of printing phony money, but he also extorted from the wealthy.

The life of DeBardeleben follows a familiar path of a rough childhood and a poor relationship with his mother. The anger toward women is mirrored in each of his five wives and in each victim on a remarkmable scattered path of crime. So base and cruel were the recordings of his crimes that hardened investigators were disturbed.

Although author Stephen Michaud's writing is rather dry at times, the errors that should have been corrected by proofreaders are unacceptable. The misplacement of punctuation marks in Chapter 10 is so bad it is comical. Yet the most interesting mistake is on page 91, the first page of the Chapter 12. "Indistinct voices filtered down from an upstairs radio as the team picked its way through DeBardeleben's dark, dusty living mom ...". It would seem as though spellcheck did not recognize "mom" should have been "room".

As other readers have noted, I found great interest in the Epilogue. In this section, we learn the fates of the children DeBardeleben left behind. It is an aspect of true crime that is rarely explored.

“A valueable storehouse of tactics and strategies for constructing (or renovating) the foundation of our self-estem” ―Phillip G. Zimbardo, author of Shyness

1The Nature
of Self-Esteem
Self-esteem is essential for psychological survival. It is an emotional sine qua non—without some measure of self-worth, life can be enormously painful, with many basic needs going unmet.
One of the main factors differentiating humans from other animals is the awareness of self: the ability to form an identity and then attach a value to it. In other words, you have the capacity to define who you are and then decide if you like that identity or not. The problem of self-esteem is this human capacity for judgment. It’s one thing to dislike certain colors, noises, shapes, or sensations. But when you reject parts of yourself, you greatly damage the psychological structures that literally keep you alive.
Judging and rejecting yourself causes enormous pain. And in the same way that you would favor and protect a physical wound, you find yourself avoiding anything that might aggravate the pain of self-rejection in any way. You take fewer social, academic, or career risks. You make it more difficult for yourself to meet people, interview for a job, or push hard for something where you might not succeed. You limit your ability to open yourself with others, express your sexuality, be the center of attention, hear criticism, ask for help, or solve problems.
To avoid more judgments and self-rejection, you erect barriers of defense. Perhaps you blame and get angry, or bury yourself in perfectionistic work. Or you brag. Or you make excuses. Sometimes you turn to alcohol or drugs.
This book is about stopping the judgments. It’s about healing the old wounds of hurt and self-rejection. How you perceive and feel about yourself can change. And when those perceptions and feelings change, the ripple effect will touch every part of your life with a gradually expanding sense of freedom.
CAUSES AND EFFECTS
Hundreds of researchers have quizzed thousands of people of various ages and situations, trying to see what causes self-esteem, who has the most of it, how important it is, how it can be increased, and so on.
Studies of young children show clearly that parents’ style of child-rearing during the first three or four years determines the amount of self-esteem that a child starts with. After that, most studies of older children, adolescents, and adults share a common confusion: what is cause and what is effect?
Does academic success foster self-esteem, or does self-esteem foster academic success? Does high social status cause high self-esteem, or does high self-esteem help you gain high social status? Do alcoholics drink because they hate themselves, or do they hate themselves because they drink? Do people like themselves because they do well in job interviews, or do they do better in interviews because they like themselves?
These are classic chicken-and-egg questions. Just as eggs come from chickens and chickens come from eggs, it seems that self-esteem grows out of your circumstances in life, and your circumstances in life are influenced strongly by your self-esteem. Which came first? The question has serious implications for your success at raising your self-esteem.
If external circumstances determine self-esteem, then all you have to do to improve your self-esteem is to improve your circumstances. Let’s say you have low self-esteem because you never graduated from high school, you’re short, your mom hated herself, you live in the slums, and you’re 100 pounds overweight. All you have to do is go to night school and get your degree, grow about six inches, have been raised by a different mother, move to Beverly Hills, and lose 100 pounds. It’s a cinch, right?
But you know you’ll never make it. There’s nothing you can do about your parents or your height. Your only hope is that things are the other way around: that self-esteem determines circumstances. This means that if you improve your self-esteem, your circumstances will improve. So just stop hating yourself, and you’ll get taller, your mom will become somebody different, and those 100 pounds will evaporate like the morning dew.
If you feel that this second scenario is also a little unlikely, you can be congratulated on a keen appreciation of the real world.
The fact is that self-esteem and your circumstances are only indirectly related. There is another intervening factor that determines self-esteem 100 percent of the time: your thoughts.
For example, you look in the mirror and think, “Boy, am I fat. What a slob.” This thought clobbers your self-esteem. If you looked in the mirror and thought, “Well, all right, it looks good to wear my hair like this,” the effect on your self-esteem would be the opposite. The image in the mirror remains the same. Only the thoughts change.
Or let’s say that you’re discussing the news, and when you make a remark about the right-wing rebels your nitpicking friend corrects you: “No, you mean the left-wing rebels.” If you tell yourself, “I really sound stupid,” your self-esteem will take a nose dive. If you say to yourself, “Oh yeah, I’ve got to keep that straight next time,” your self-esteem will not suffer so much. In either case, you don’t change the circumstances, only how you interpret them.
Does this mean that circumstances have nothing to do with self-esteem? No. Obviously, in the area of social status, bank vice-presidents have more opportunity to feel better about their careers than cab drivers have. This is why a study of 100 vice-presidents and 100 cab drivers will “prove” that the higher status job leads to higher self-esteem. What is overlooked among the statistics is that there are some vice-presidents who slaughter their self-esteem by telling themselves, “I should have been president of my own bank by now. I’m a failure,” just as there are some cab drivers who feel good about themselves because they think, “So I’m just a cab driver—I’m putting bread on the table, the kids are doing good in school, things are going just fine.”
This book uses proven methods of cognitive behavioral therapy to raise your self-esteem by changing the way you interpret your life. It will show you how to uncover and analyze the negative self-statements you habitually make. You will learn how to create new, objective, positive self-statements that will foster your self-esteem instead of undermining it.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This book is organized logically, with the most important and universally applicable material at the beginning.
Chapter two introduces the pathological critic, the voice inside you that criticizes and keeps your self-esteem low. The next chapter deals with disarming the critic so that you can be free to begin raising your self-esteem without interference.
Chapter four shows you how to make an accurate self-assessment of your strengths and weaknesses, an important first step in changing your self-esteem.
Chapter five explains cognitive distortions, irrational ways of thinking that contribute to low self-esteem.
Chapter six introduces the concept of compassion. Self-esteem is closely tied to compassion for others and compassion for yourself.
Chapter seven is about your shoulds, all the rules you have made for yourself about how you should act, feel, and be. Revising your shoulds is one of the most powerful ways to undo old negative programming.
Chapter eight shows how to handle mistakes by changing how you relate to error and by letting go of mistakes in the past.
Chapter nine teaches you how to react to criticism without losing your self-esteem or having to attack others.
Chapter ten covers asking for what you want, one of the most difficult tasks for people with low self-esteem.
Chapter eleven teaches powerful techniques of visualization, a way of setting and achieving self-esteem goals.
Chapter twelve guides you in learning a simple self-hypnosis technique to reinforce affirmations you have created in earlier chapters.
Chapter thirteen is called “I’m Still Not OK” and is designed to help you stop running away from pain while you develop an attitude of nonjudgment.
Chapter fourteen, Core Beliefs, will help you explore, challenge, and change deeply held convictions about your worth.
Chapter fifteen is for you if you have children. It explains what you can do to give your kids the priceless legacy of high self-esteem.
Using this book is simple. Keep reading until you reach the end of chapter three, “Disarming the Critic.” At that point, there is a chart for you to consult. It will direct you to the appropriate chapter to deal with specific problems you may have. If you want to learn about and improve your self-esteem in general, just read the book in sequence from start to finish.
Benefiting from this book is not as simple as just reading it. You have to do some work. Many chapters have exercises to do and skills to learn. When the text tells you to “close your eyes and imagine a scene from your past,” you should actually close your eyes and do it. When the book says, “On a separate piece of paper, list three situations in which you have felt inadequate,” you really need to go find some paper and a pen that writes and sit down and list your three situations.
There is no substitute for doing the exercises. Imagining yourself doing the exercises is not enough. Skimming through the exercises with the vague intention of coming back to them sometime and trying them is not enough. Doing only the exercises that seem easy or interesting is not enough. If there was a way to improve your self-esteem that was easier than doing exercises, it would be in this book. The exercises that are in this book are here because they are the best, easiest, and only way the authors know to raise self-esteem.
You should take your time reading this book. It is densely packed with ideas and things to do. Read it at a pace that will let you ab...

We are born Good
By Steven Haack
Parents, schools, and churches have all affected our self esteem in a negative way. According to the author, their negative voices live in us via the Critic. I have left the Christian church because they believe in original sin; in my opinion, original sin is a doctrine of control.

Mckay's book helps undo all those negatives. I believe we are all born with original goodness. I am convinced that the battle between nature and nurture is settled. Chapter four is my favorite; in it he instructs the reader how to deal with weaknesses; he also tells the reader to pay attention to our strengths.

Has helped me in more ways than I can count
By Dan R
I've read many books on Buddhism, Eastern Thought, confidence, communication and connection. Name a self-help category and I promise I've read at least a few titles. They were all a little helpful, but none ever come close to this book. I've always found myself excited to read a new title and quickly absorbing everything the author had to say. I'd spend the next few weeks making some behavior modifications, and getting some positive results. However, over time many things I'd learned would slowly fade away and unsure where to look, I would decide to try another title. This book is different, it focuses on changing the YOU--that thing that makes your decisions.

It's so easy to read other titles as an escape from reality where you teach yourself a set of gimmicks secretly hoping their ideas will someday make you the person you want to be. These authors know better, they know that the way you've been taught to think will make you slide back to where you started every time no matter what they tell you, so they start in a different place. First they teach you about the nature of self-esteem (these chapters alone will be an eye-opener. They teach you how your mind takes in information, processes it, and how your upbringing and experiences have effected your self-talk. Through dozens of real life examples (some of which can really hit home) and many exercises, the authors lead you on a journey towards understanding, healing, and happiness.

As a result of using this book, I've overcome social anxiety, become more productive, and learned more than I can explain in this review. Both scientific and compassionate, this is the greatest book I've ever read.

On a side note, examining this book in the context of Buddhism or Jiddu Krishnamurti is highly fascinating.

Update 12/07/11-- After you've finished this book, try Come to Your Senses: Demystifying the Mind Body Connection. It's the most helpful self-help book I've ever read.
Update 01/15/12-- Then get this: Healing the Shame that Binds You (Recovery Classics).

It only works if you put forth the effort...
By A Customer
This book was assigned to me while I was going through counselling. I think it is a great tool for understanding why we have all these negative thoughts about ourselves. There are journalling exercises as well as mental ones posted at the end of each chapter. I especially benefitted on the chapter about identifying the "critic" inside your head and ridding yourself of him/her.

Suddenly Gone: The Terrifying True Story of a Serial Killer's Grisly Kidnapping-Murders of Three Young Women, by Dan Mitrione

A serial killer hunting young girls...

The horribly mutilated condition of young Terri Maness's naked body held the first clue. One smart Wichita detective suspected the legal secretary's murder might be the first in a string of depraved sexual slayings. He would be right on the mark.

A spree of torture and murder...

Six days later Michelle Katf was badly beaten and barely escaped with her life. Twenty-year old Joan Butler was not so lucky. She soon disappeared without a trace. But when Richard Grissom, a handsome onetime college student, started driving the dead girl's red Corsica, the cops were hot on his trail. By then the twisted thrill killer, now a desperate fugitive, was already looking foe fresh victims.

Nothing could satisfy his lust for death...

Attractive roommates, Theresa Brown and Christine Rusch were only too happy to have a handsome guy like Grissom at their Saturday night party. They never suspected that 48 hours later they would be trapped in a horrifying nightmare. For days, Grissom terrorized them, before finally snuffing out their young lives, and sending police on one of the most exhaustive manhunts in Kansas history.

Former FBI agent Dan Mitrione follows the dark, twisted path of a man with all the cunning, sexy good looks, sexy good looks and deadly charm of Ted Bundy, exposing Grissom's secret bloody past that shocked even the most jaded detectives.

A family's view
By Reader
My Aunt was one of the women this book was written about. For the people who feel the women weren't "honored" or the families were intruded on, they are misinformed or just ignorant. Mr. Mitrione was respectful and showed great concern to try to get details correct for our family's sake. For those who feel he just got too close to the families involved to write an objective book, that's your opinion. I have to disagree. I feel this was an important piece needed to bring a personal side to this cold, senseless crime.

Thank you Mr. Mitrione for acknowledging our pain and feelings. We miss Theresa every day.

Enlightening!
By A Customer
There are many things I find incredible about the telling of this story. The first being Mr. Mitrione's account of seeing the poster of Joan Butler and how it led to the writing of this book. From there the reader gets a horrifying glimpse into the mind of a cold blooded killer, but also gains an appreciation for the dedication of the law enforcement officers who brought him to justice, largely on circumstantial evidence. Most importantly, Mr. Mitrione makes us feel the pain of loss of the families of the missing girls and the agony of never being able to lay them to rest. I know that I will be much more careful after reading this book.

Suddenly Gone
By Thomas A. Tucker
Overall this book is ok reading. The beginning starts out talking about the first murders and the reading is very interesting, but as the book progressed, there were spots in the book that were so long and boring. For the most part, the boring parts talked about how the police weren't able to find any evidence or what had to be done in order to find the evidence. I guess the book wasn't made to be extremely interesting in the first place. It was made to tell the stories of the murdered girls in Kansas and show the loss of their families. Other than those boring spots, the book was actually quite good. The author was very descriptive and always gave a good sense of what was going on. I beleive that this author told the story of what happened to these four girls really well. I give a lot of credit to Dan Mitrione for taking on this project and going through all of the trouble of interviewing all of the people involved with this case to accurately tell his story.

Spooky Reading!
By MovieMan
I love reading the case files of Ed & Lorraine Warren! The first one I read was "The Demonologist", which I had years ago when I was in school. I was fascinated with the tales in there and it was where I was first introduced to "Annabelle."

These new editions are much better than the versions I had in the past, with cleaner print, easier on the eyes. Several have photos that are much more clear than some of the previous editions.

I am so glad these books are back in print, and in a pleasant, matching collection. Be sure to get all of them, and be ready for many chilling nights reading the spooky stories that will give you lots of restless sleep. :)

I recommend this book for people who are interested in the fascinating lives of Ed and Lorraine Warren. Could not stop reading! Very informative and entertaining. The Warrens never disappoint when it comes to outlining their own in-depth experiences of their respective careers as the most fascinating documenters of the supernatural and other worldly realms!

By Stefania
While I like the movies which were created from Ed & Lorraine's investigations, this book lacked appeal. Writing was somewhat choppy and one story/interview ended so abruptly I thought the pages must've been stuck together, but they weren't. Maybe I was expecting more well-rounded stories while many of these were straight forward interviews.

The Dodge City Trail (Trail Drive, No.8), by Ralph Compton

For a brave band of Texas pioneers, new enemies awaited on the thundering trail. But old enemies were the deadliest of all.

The only riches Texans had left after the Civil War were five million
maverick longhorns and the brains, brawn and boldness to drive them
north to where the money was. Now, Ralph Compton brings this violent and magnificent time to life in an extraordinary epic series based on the history-making trail drives.

The Dodge City Trail

Dodge City was a businessman's dream. And a cattle drive north-with thousands of unbranded longhorns and a remuda of stolen Mexican horses-was a dream of Texans like Dan Ember, who'd come home from the war to find a rich man's hired guns living on his land. Now Dan and his neighbors would risk everything on a drive across the Llano. Along the way, two bands of killers would fight over them, the gunslinger Clay Allison would join up with them, and Quanah Parker's Comanches would try to thwart them-in a bold adventure fueled by the courage to face death, the pride to keep going, and the knowledge that now, there was no turning back.

A Great Read
By Kevin Townsend
Like all of the books in the Ralph Compton Trail Drive series this book is full of vivid landscapes and descriptions of the conditions and hardship these pioneers had to endure and the action is non stop, the characters are both heroic and flawed, he is my new favourite Author, right up there with the late and sadly missed Vince Flynn, creator of Mitch Rapp, both of these writers had a way of immersing you in the story and although you don't want it to end, you can't put it down.

Ralph Compton's Trail Drive Series - very entertaining
By J. Mcdonald
These are very readable books and well suited for reading aloud. They have been entertaining my husband and myself for many years. To reread them is like visiting old friends. As the reader I like not having to filter out cuss words or too much gore. (as in Johnstone's books) Just good story lines and action and plenty of stampedes.

PAWS FOR ALARM is a reprint of DEATH SWAP [1984]
By Ann E. Nichols
It's the companion volume to WHISKERS AND SMOKE [original title: A TRAIL OF ASHES]. The Harper family of New Hampshire has swapped houses with an English widow, Rosemary, for the summer. Nancy Harper has reason to be grumpy. Her scholarly husband, Arnold, is too eager to get down to research in London. Her twins come from the Calvin of "Calvin and Hobbes" mold. Certainly she loves her husband and children, as can be seen during those times she fears she's lost them, even though they do their best to drive her crazy.
Arnold can be a dreadful tease, but is that any reason for his series of near-fatal accidents? Was Rosemary's husband's death an accident after all? Can the Harpers find out what's going on before Arnold has his final "accident"? How many letters telling Rosemary what damages those Harper imps have caused is poor Nancy going to have to write? If only Donald and Donna could be as polite and well-behaved as Esmond, Rosemary's cat.
Yes, you will find those Babson scenes of awkward social situations in this book. (What do you say when you find an acquaintance caught doing what One Should Not Be Doing? How do you keep your cool when your Loved Ones -- and you're using the term very loosely at the moment -- are making a bid to totally gross you out in public?) Ms. Babson has written better stories, but this one is still a pretty good read.
