Kennedy's (The Maskado Lesson) third novel turns on an interesting premise: suppose a terrorist, a cross between Abu Nidal and Yasser Arafat, took over an American boys school in Italy, forcing the politically and industrially powerful fathers to pressure the U.S. government into acceding to his demands. Hoping to achieve U.S. impotence in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, the ambitious and charismatic Sharif wants, at the same time, to elevate himself to an exalted role among his fellow Arabs. A Delta force team decides it cannot storm the fortress-like school without killing most of their men and the hostages in the process. Amid a group of fairly familiar characters, Kennedy has introduced an interestingly drawn 15-year-old, Billy Tepper, a prankster with a swift and wide-ranging intellect, able, like TV's MacGyver, to transform everyday items into functional tools of another sort. With his lieutenant, Gamel, in charge of the hostage situation, Sharif seems bound to win. But Gamel is out of control. He kills one of the boys and dumps his body outside, Billy begins to sabotage the terrorists' equipment, mistakenly believing a rescue is imminent, and Sharif's plan starts to unravel. Fast paced, highly readable, if somewhat predictable, Kennedy's scenario will entertain thriller buffs.

YA What if the military might of the U.S. could be neutralized by taking hostages so precious that their lives could not be risked? American students at a private school in Europe, the sons of the political and commercial establishment, become the targets of an Arab strongman. The strategy is so effective that Americans from the President down to commandos realize that military action would bring certain death. Escape, if possible, must originate from within. Young adult readers should be pleased to find that the hero is a practical-joke-playing student who is a mechanical and computer whiz. With communication only tenuous and with coordination almost impossible, both hostages and would-be rescuers must rely on his ability to hatch a plot right under his captors' noses. With military force unusable and with a national policy of no accomodation with terrorists appearing increasingly hollow, readers may wonder just who the title's ``toy soldiers'' really are. Tucked in the hills near Rome, a boarding school for the sons of wealthy Americans is taken over by PLO terrorists who vow to kill their hostages if their demands are not met. The school prankster, 15-year-old Billy Tepper, summons his considerable courage and electronics genius to save his friends. This is not a book for young adultsalthough it may well appeal to many of themfor there is far too much violence and bloodshed to leave any doubt about the author's intent to write a serious novel. Kennedy has created a first-class international thriller, incorporating appropriate quantities of suspense, action, and even humor. Readers will not take the story too seriously, but that doesn't make it any less entertaining. Recommended for all popular fiction collections. Brian Alley, Sangamon State Univ. Toy Soldiers

I've always loved the book "Toy Soldiers", but I've always had a hard time finding a copy. So when amazon had it for 38 cents, I was ecstatic, and more than a little skeptic. But I got the book after a few weeks, and it was in pretty good condition. An old library book with a few questionable stains on a few pages, but overall I'm very satisfied.

will "the good guys" win?

When I first read this book several years ago, I enjoyed it as a good read whose pace accelerates as the storyline unfolds. The plot centers on a school for American boys in Europe being taken over by terrorists, and how a few of the students, led by one in particular, attempt to fight back. There are a couple of plot twists you might not see coming.
Since September 11, however, this could be much closer to reality than most people would have imagined previous to that day, and that is pretty freakin' scary.
