Son of the Shadows, the second book in Juliet Marillier's award-winning Sevenwaters Trilogy
Beautiful Sorcha is the courageous young woman who risked all to save her family from a wicked curse and whose love shattered generations of hate and bridged two cultures. It was by her sacrifice that the spell was broken and her brothers were finally brought home to Sevenwaters. But not all her brothers were able to escape the spell that transformed them into swans, and even those who did were more-and less-than they were before the change.
It is left to Sorcha's daughter, Liadan, to fulfill the destiny of the Sevenwaters clan. Beloved child and dutiful daughter, she embarks on a journey that opens her eyes to the wonders of the world around her . . . and shows her just how hard-won was the peace that there are forces far darker than anyone could have guessed and ancient powers conspiring to destroy this family's peace--and their world.
She will need all of her strength to stand up to those she loves best, for in the finding of her own true love, Liadan's course may doom them all . . . or may be their salvation.

Amazon.com Review
Second of the Sevenwaters trilogy of novels about the last days of heroic Ireland, Son of the Shadows takes up the story of the children of Sorcha, who saved her enchanted brothers, and Hugh, the Briton she married. Sorcha's daughter Liadan is a gifted seer and healer who thinks, in spite of her visions, that she knows what the future has in store for her--caring for her dying mother and then an alliance marriage to Eamonn. A chance meeting on the road carries her off to care for a dying man--one of the mercenaries of the sinister Painted Man, Eamonn's archenemy and a killer for hire. Liadan discovers that she cannot choose whom she loves and that she and the Painted Man are as bound up in destiny as her mother and father were before her.
This is an intelligent historical romance in which the supernatural is a part of the character's everyday lives to an extent that makes it hard to think of the book as specifically a fantasy--these are people to whom the beings of forest speak on a regular basis and to whom sorcery is real. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk
From Publishers Weekly
Druidic Erin (Ireland) is a place teeming with fairies and earth magic. But this compelling story is not a tale of the fey it is a tale of one who lives in the world of humans and yet has contact with the otherworld. Liadan of Sevenwaters is the child of Iubdan and Sorcha (whose story was told in Daughter of the Forest) and she is granted the power to hear and see what others cannot. She is a healer of mind, body and spirit. It is Liadan's gift of healing that brings about a meeting with a mercenary considered to be the enemy of her family. Liadan names this man without a name or history "Bran" and soon realizes that the information she has been told about him (and the world in general) is not what it appears to be. In too short a time, Liadan comes to love Bran with a fierceness that she never imagined possible, and yet their love cannot be fulfilled. Bran's life is not her life, nor is her life his. They must travel down different paths (at least for a while), knowing in their hearts that the bond between them is stronger than the things that pull them apart. This is the story of a powerful love, which might change the course of history for Liadan's people and the island of Erin. Beautifully written, the second in the Sevenwaters trilogy continues a sparkling saga of a family whose destiny is to help free Erin from British tyranny. The story, though a bit light on the magic and heavy on the romantic, is reminiscent of Jennifer Roberson's Chesuli series. Fantasy addicts should love it.

From Library Journal
In this work's prequel, Daughter of the Forest, Sorcha saved her brothers from a curse that turned them into swans. Now, it is her daughter Liadan's turn to leave her home in peaceful Sevenwaters in search of her destiny. A world of druids and shapechangers, Fair Folk and foul monsters draws Liadan deeper into danger as she battles to save her family and her home. Marillier blends old legends with original storytelling to produce an epic fantasy that belongs in most libraries.

Sevenwaters book 2: the next generation
By Lily
After reading 'Daughter of the Forest.' and being blown away by the brilliant writing and sheer intensity of that novel, I didn't know what to expect with this next book in the series. It continues that first story without much of a glitch, so it is imperative to read this series in order. I think that these books are hard to review because they are so unique and unlike anything else I've read before. They do make a very big impact on the reader. Sometimes they are hard to read due to the disturbing, raw and gut wrenching places they take you to. I felt as though 'Son of the Shadows' was less torturous than 'Daughter of the Forest.' but they both took me to some dark places. The characters are all wonderfully complex and so interesting. The ancient history and old magic that is woven through these tales gives them an other worldly quality. Yet they are believable and honest in the telling and draw you into this world the author has created. There is both deep sadness and moments of joy in this novel. These books are long in length so there is some amount of patience involved for things to come to fruition. However, I think I'm hooked on this Sevenwaters series and will be eager to see what the next installment has to offer.

I loved the first book in the series
By Shawnee
I loved the first book in the series, but I liked this one even more. Marillier is a master of weaving the story of her characters into the fabric of Celtic lore. There are a couple of twists in the plot that I did not see coming (that's always fun) and her leading man was about as complicated a character as I've seen in a while. I loved Liadon's stubbornness and her political savvy. I hope it works out for her in the third installment. Already chewing my nails as I contemplate everything that could go wrong. I would love to see a great movie director make this series into three wonderful films.

It has a grip on you
By Mandalal Manuela Williams
It has a grip on you. The second book of this triology is just as great as the first one. The daughter of Sorcha and Hugh is telling the story. The author knows how to keep you curious of what comes next and also keeps your breath away to find out how a curtain adventure is turning out. Already bought the third book.
