excellent book

I am an avid reader of true crime and this is the second book I have read by John Glatt and I thought he knocked this one out of the park. While reading there were times I was moved to tears and times when I would shake my head in disgust. Darren Mack is a despicable petulent child who would stomp his feet and whine when he didn't get his way. He had to win at all costs. But most of all he is a bully. He was happy as long as he was getting his way but once things started to go against him, all of a sudden everyone was out to get him. No one is out to get you Darren, you really are that despicable.
This was a horrible crime and in no way did Charla deserve what happened. She met him while he was divorcing his first wife and saw first hand the horrible things he was doing to her, even going with him to meet "hit man" to get rid of her. Knowing all that, did she really think he would treat her any different?
I was also disgusted by people describing him as a "great father." Really? A "great father" does NOT leave their children to live in a house with no utilities, furniture or food because he has to win. A "great father" does NOT file bankruptcy so he doesn't have to pay child support. But most of all a "great father" does NOT murder the mother of his child while that child is just a few feet away. To everyone who thinks he is, shame on you, I have a feeling they know deep down that he's not.
His girlfriend at the time of the trial should count her blessing that he went to jail she could have been his next victim unless she believed, like Charla did, that he would treat her different. Could she really be that dumb? I am curious.
But most of all shame on the Mack familly. Maybe if they had just once in Darren life made accountable for something he wouldn't have turned out to be a despicable petulent child. The things they did to aid Darren in his quest to win are just as despicable. They have no one to blame but themselves, but sadly they will never see it. I do agree with one thing Darren's brother Landon said after Darren was sentenced, he called it "appalling."
You're right. It's appalling. I'm appalled. Charla's family is appalled. Everyone who had the misfortune of not agreeing, or giving into Darren is appalled. all of the attorneys who represented him that he fired when he didn't get his way are appalled. And so on and so on. The only thing that is not appalling is his sentence. Which, oddly enough, is the only thing that you thought was appalling. I think that says it all. My heart goes out to Charla's daughter. By now she's old enough to know what her "great father" did.
John Glatt's book will evoke all range of emotions in you. He has done an excellent job in making you care about all of the innocent victims in this story and I thank him for that. I will be looking to read more books by this author. Enjoy!

Diabolically Good Read

This book took what seemed like forever to read. It was rich in detail and told the story of Darrell Mack, a Reno millionaire who was involved in a contentious divorce from his wife and thought he was above paying alimony, child support, and reaching a final settlement of community property. Truth be told, his wife's Charla's demand weren't outrageous, but from the start Darrell exhibited a lot of bad behavior. He shut down all forms of credit, stopped paying the bills, and went to far as to play around with his businesses to give the impression that his $44,000 monthly income had mysteriously dwindle to $5,000 a month. While his wife and daughter lived off loans and handouts from family and friends in their crumbling mansion that was going into foreclosure, Darrell continued to live a hedonistic lifestyle going to swinging conventions which was one of his favorite social diversions. Charla was terrified of Darrell and took his endless threats seriously. Things finally reached a head in court and Darrell finally reached the end of his very short rope and took matters in his own hands. He methodically planned to kill Charla as well as the judge who delivered a resolution in his favor. The core of this book looks at the flight of Darrell Mack to Mexico and the legal maneuvers that a million dollars can buy when a very angry man wants to avoid the consequences of his acts.
To say this book was well done is an understatement. Darrell Mack was a control freak whom was like a petulant child. He wanted what he wanted without regard for others and would do whatever he wanted to get his way. He was manipulative and the dichotomy of pure evil. The author John Glatt did a magnificent job detailing Mack's personal history and merging it with the crime and its very extended aftermath. If you like true crime, this is probably for you. It has sex, rage, manipulation, personality disorder, and a belated sense of justice.

This is a true story about a very egotistical man. Such a senseless crime.
This book is so well written you won't be able to put it down. All of John Glatts books are good and you can't go wrong ever purchasing anything he writes. If you love true crime buy this book.
